Re: Who is still keeping Y2K backups and how long to you intend t o keep them?

2001-05-23 Thread Jim Taylor

At my previous place of employment we did many special backups of Y2K
related data. We did not use long retention periods for this data. We
figured that if we were going to need the data we would find out soon
enough.

RULE of THUMB: don't keep backups for the sake of keeping backups. Instead,
consider your restore requirements. Your restore requirements should
dictate your backups and backup retention.

For what it's worth.

It appears to me that there is a large amount of Y2K backup data being
stored, not only in the TSM environment but for just about everything.

My guess is prior to Y2K, the powers that be set a long retention policy
based on the risk of post Y2K litigation.

Gifted with hind-sight, the apocalypse never occurred and as far as I am
aware litigation has not eventuated therefore the long retention of the
backups possibly is not justified.

I am interested in opinions and policy on the retention of this data.

For the record, I would like to get rid of them now.

NAS system support: Official stance please...

2001-05-23 Thread Kelly J. Lipp

Anyone willing to stick their neck out or point me to someone who is...

What is Tivoli's official party line regarding the backup of NAS boxes? I'm
thinking probably, "if it works fine, if it doesn't it isn't our problem."
I need for someone to say that if it's true.

I understand that many of the products out there are working on native TSM
clients to do this work. I also understand that a client of the NAS box
should be able to backup shared filespaces and in many cases this probably
works just fine (naturally, it isn't working in my case!).

Re: Windows 2000 server backups

2001-05-23 Thread Rushforth, Tim

I have a (closed) PMR with Tivoli (20987) and open APAR IC29545.

I get DR. WATSON ERROR:

DrWatson Event ID 4097
The application, , generated an application error The error occurred on
01/30/2001 @ 14:01:42.140 The exception generated was c005 at
address 780128F0 (strncmp)

dsmerror log shows:
01/30/2001 14:00:31 NTRestoreRsmDB(): error importing the RSM database
files. Win32 RC=4312.

I am running W2K SP1 and have tried with 4.1.2.0 and 4.1.2.12 clients (3.7.3
server).

If I exclude the RSM from the system object restore then the restore works
properly (and since I am not using RSM I assume this isn't a big deal.)

In my case I was restoring a Domain Controller - if I restored the System
Object in Directory Services restore mode it worked ok, but never worked
following the Redbook W2K Recovery steps. (Install new server, same name
etc, restore all files, don't reboot, restore entire System Object.)

For Domain Controllers, if you have the Active Directory Log and Database on
different drives then the 4.1.2.0 client does not work for restore but the
4.1.2.12 client does.

I may have another problem, still trying to verify, when a backup is done
with the administrator logged in (and hence the ntuser.dat is not backed
up). In this case I have not been successful in doing bare metal restore.
Still working on this one.

Besides the above, I have sucessfully done Bare Metal restores of W2K Domain
controllers many times (15+).

reboot. Tivoli recommends that you do not reboot, instead you should restore
the system objects which is what we have tried. When the restore of the
system objects is complete it does not give you a detailed report and exits
back to the desktop. If you go into event viewer it reports a dr. watson

Residency Announcement: ST-1200 Using IBM LTO Tape with Open Systems

Benefits to Resident: The resident will gain hands-on experience in the
ITSO's SAN Lab with our Ultrium 3583 Tape Library and a range of servers.
It is also planned to use tape subsystems in other locations as time
permits.

This San Jose residency begins 06 Aug 2001, ends 07 Sep 2001 (5 weeks), and
requires 3 residents. Please submit nominations by 29 Jun 2001.

Description: This project will produce a new IBM Redbook that will cover
the implementation details of attaching IBM Ultrium tape subsystems to
servers running AIX, Solaris and HP-UX. It will describe how the attachment
support is provided, what connection methods are supported and will
illustrate the text with practical examples. There will be a companion
residency for Windows NT, Windows 2000 and Linux in project ST-1201 which
is planned for later in 2001.

Objectives: Topics to be covered include:
1. Attachment methods (SCSI LVD, HVD; SAN, and FC-AL) and when to choose
each of these
2. Software fundamentals (device drivers, addressing, UNIX tools)
3. Specific examples for AIX
4. Specific examples for Solaris
5. Specific examples for HP-UX
6. TSM examples
7. ArcServe examples for LTO
8. Veritas NetBackup examples for LTO

This residency is suitable for Customers, Business Partners, and IBMers.

A basic requirement for all residents is the ability to read and clearly
express concepts and procedures in common English.

Resident Prerequisites: The successful resident need not have all the
skills requested. However, he or she should have strong skills in at least
one of the main areas and a desire to learn new skills.

Skill levels below are from 5 to 1, where 5 = expert skill and 1 = no
skill.

You personally do not have to have all of these skills to be considered a
good candidate for this residency. The project leader will match your
skills with that of the other nominations to put together the best team
possible.

Skills Needed:

|Documentation Skill Area |Skill|
| |Level|
|--+-|
|Freelance | 3 |

These documentation skills are desirable, but not critical, for acceptance
into this residency. The only definite requirement is a readiness to learn
and to handle your own data entry needs.

Nominees must have the approval of their managers before submitting a

Stan,

I went through that several times in disaster recovery testing... finally
got it working. What you need to do is edit your devconfig.lst file (if
you make several copies in different locations, make sure you edit the one
in the TSM server "bin" directory), and look for a line like this:

/* LIBRARYINVENTORY SCSI ATL DBR189 272 101*/

But, yours should have your library name and the serial number of your DB
Backup tape.
Update the number following the volser (272 in my example) to be the
element number of the slot in your library where the tape is loaded.
This should allow your restore command to find the tape.

You can get the element number from your library docs. If in doubt, try to
figure out which slot corresponds to the lowest element and load the tape
there. I know this all sounds pretty "hokey", but its actually documented
in the Admin Guide in the section about recovering the server with DRM, I
think. And, I can testify that it works.

Good Luck,

Along with the permission issues discussed already, if you're on an older

I didn't have too much of a problem installing TDP 3.1 for SAP R/3 but we've
definitely discovered its performance problems. We are hoping 3.2 due out
the end of June fixes everything.

Have you had it fail utterly yet? This past long weekend (for Canada) it
received "ANS1017E (RC-50) Session rejected: TCP/IP connection failure"
during an offline backup. I've defaulted EXITONERROR to NO and coded
RETRY=75 and TCPWAIT=60 so that if *SM was down a backup could survive a *SM
service outage, but the backup never did restart the database. I only
received one connection failure message so I'm not sure whether a lower
RETRY value would have helped return the database to service.

We don't run the Admin Assistant, mainly because we have no NT boxes behind
our firewall.

Have you checked out known problems per release yet?

D: drive not backed up
This normally is a permissions problem. Check the scheduler service via
control panel / services. See what account the service logs in as. If
it is the SYSTEM account, make sure that the drive has permissions for
the SYSTEM account. A lot of NT Administrators remove EVERYONE from the
permissions, which also prevents the SYSTEM account from being able to
do backups.
Another reason could be that disks involved are part of the Microsoft
clustering environment. Have you included CLUSTERnode Yes in the
cluster.opt file for each logical node on the cluster?
