Paul,

why does logmode=normal imply performing full backups every day?
I guess, your statement has to be seen in the context of Kelly's remark
regarding restore times; clearly, having to restore just one full backup
would be advantageous. We also cannot afford to run full backups every day,
so we run daily incrementals. We nevertheless live with logmode=normal,
because, as Lindsay Morris already stated, roll-forward probably gives you
nothing, if the DB is mirrored.

The only situation, where roll-forward seems important to me, is when
the DB is not mirrored. The DB must be big then, because otherwise it
would be better to spend the extra log space needed for roll-forward for
the DB mirror.

Re: SQL2025N An I/O error "-50" occurred on media "ADSM".

2001-06-25 Thread Walter Ridderhof

I've seen this one before, in our case it had to do with insufficient disk pool
storage, by increasing the clients target pool space (the clients policy
settings directed the client data to a disk storage pool) the problem was
solved. It would seem that an SQL2025N would in someway be connected to a TSM
resource problem, be it disk or tape, you should find the answer to your problem
in the server activity log.

Re: Improving NT client throughput

2001-06-25 Thread Walter Ridderhof

Vint,

just to give you an idea that you're not alone, we have similar type servers of
which the largest contains 1.9 million tiff files (avg. 45 kb), your worst case
client scenario. To increment the file system will cost TSM about 2 1/2 hours.
Backuping the data itself will come to an average of 10mb/min, I've seen total
times of 3 hrs 46 mins to backup 25080 files for a total of 1.08gb to a
don't-hold-your-breath 9 hrs 41 mins to backup 92587 files.
The client node hardware consists of single CPU HP 6000 servers with 256kb
controller cache, 12 disks are configured as 1 RAID-5, this is all running on a
dedicated FDDI backbone. (system OS is NT4 SP6a, TSM client is V3.7.2.17).
TSM client tuning consisted of setting sensible max options like the
tcpwindowsize 63, tcpbuffsize 32 and tcpnodelay yes.

For the NT TSM server side, well pure misery after migration from 3.1.2.57 to
4.1.3 the db cache hit has dropped from 98 % to 83 % this impacted the backup
time big time but with some client and server re-tuning we're still within the
available backup window. We hope to get the db cache hit up a few percent with a
dump/ loadformat/load/audit but the audit abends, something that should be fixed
in V4.1.3.2.

In conclusion the things to get right where it concerns hardware, big RAIDS
(RAID5 or 10) at least 6 disks, lots of controller cache, try getting file
spaces on their own RAIDS on a seperate SCSI channel this way you can
efficiently run multiple TSM client nodes on 1 box (admittedly customer has to
comply in advance).
Get on to your own TSM or data network backbone, if running ethernet try to let
the big clients run in a quiet time slot.
On the TSM client and server side, the perfomance settings advized by Tivoli
seem to do the job, well, most of the time. And for sure get that % db cache hit
up to 98.

regards Walter Ridderhof.

We use TSM 3.7.3.8 @MVS with several 3590-tapes shared with OS390.

Our biggest files are 30GB (Exchange) and normally went direct to tape
by setting a sizelimit to the diskstorage pool.

I "THINK" your db backup will still run and clear your log as long as you
have scratch tapes available, but I'm not 100% sure on that. I do know that

Why not go ahead and extend your recovery log anyway just to be sure...?

Inspect your server activity log; there's probably better info,
there --
like a tape mount request that didn't get satisfied within the
"mount wait"
time on the device class of the storage pool your
management-class/copy-group points to. I've seen this happen where
the
max-scratch was set too low, or the TDP node name was trying to use
multiple
mount-points (when the node was registered for less than the
request)...
WAD.

Also, most backup agents (via the API) have gotten smart enough to
send the
estimated "glob" size, which can easily be used to send the data to
the
nextstg pool (usually, tape). We set max-size on most disk pools,
and we
use scratch tapes in the tape library (maxscr=, rather than
pre-defined
volumes which cause mount request time-outs), so any file or "glob"
greater
than max-size goes to the nextstg pool.

Geoff,

Are there any processes or sessions running? They could be holding the log
utilization up.

I've also seen it take a while to commit the log to the database after the
backup ends - you have 4GB of transactions in the log to commit to the
database there, and, depending on your system, that could take a while
(especially if the log and DB volumes are on the same spindle).

When this happens to someone on my team, I always caution patience - "the

Re: TDPS in a cluster

2001-06-25 Thread Glen Churchfield

Del,

I fixed this in the following way:

1. Two services need to be installed on each node of the Cluster with
the batch file; dsmcutil install /machine:%1 /name:"%2 TSM Agent"
/node:"SQL_%2" /password:"SQL_%2" /optfile:%3:\tsm\msSQL\dsm.opt
/clientdir:C:\tsm\BACLIENT /clusternode:yes /clustername:
/autostart:no
a. Install the first service on Node 1 using the parameters

b. Fail all Node 2 resources over to Node 1
c. Install the second service on Node 1 using parameters

d. Fail Node 2 resources back to Node 2
e. Install the first service on Node 2 using the parameters

f. Fail all Node 1 resources over to Node 2
g. Install the second service on Node 2 using parameters

2. The result is that each node is running both of these two services,
both set to manual.
a. TSM Agent
b. TSM Agent
3. Now, when the nodes fail over, the service restarts and any
scheduled event that is still within the window will restart.

I've been unable to find this documented anywhere in the TSM literature, or,
if it's there, it's not clear that both services are required on both nodes.

Glen,

A few suggestions... The steps to run in a cluster are
quite "touchy". If you miss a step or a step does not
complete, or is done out of order, things may not work.
A few things to check:
1.) Make sure you are using CLUSTERNODE YES in the options file
2.) Make sure you are running the same level of TSM API and
TSM scheduler on both sides of the cluster.
(Hopefully, you are running at least 4.1.2)
3.) Make sure the scheduler services are set up
**exactly** identical on both nodes.
4.) Check the Event Log for any message that might help.
Check the dsmerror.log and dsierror.log.

Keep in mind, if the scheduler is failing to start,
TDP for SQL has not even been invoked yet...
...so the problem has to do with the scheduler
service not being able to "start".

If you still cannot get it solved, call IBM support and
**insist** on speaking with TSM level 2.

Thanks,

Del

I have a pair of Win2K servers clustered with MSCS and running MSSQL 7.0.
Backups run fine with TDP 2.2, but if either node fails over to the other
node, the "failed-from" TSM schedule service fails to start on the new box.
When it fails back, the services start and run fine. The setup was
according
to the TDP V2.2 Installation and User's Guide which includes duplicate
options files and config files in the startup directory and replicated
registry keys for the passwords. Has anyone solved this problem? Tivoli
level 1 support was clueless after 2.5 hours on the phone. I'm hopeful that
I've missed something that someone on the list has seen.

Re: BackUp Oracle with min data

2001-06-25 Thread Neil Rasmussen

Wang,

Rman has control of the backup. And this is one of the purposes of Rman.
Rman will only backup the data inside the datafile not the entire datafile.
Does this answer your question?

Re: Backup Sybase on NT

2001-06-25 Thread David Longo

When I checked with BMC several months ago, they did not have SQL-BT backups for
Sybase on NT.

Quick solution would be to setup disk dump device in Sybase and run script to have
Sybase dump to it and then have *SM backup the dump, if you have enough disk space.

ADSM/DATE/SQL

2001-06-25 Thread Sheets, Jerald

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Do any of you out there have links to a SQL reference for ADSM ( I
already have the documentation from the Administrator's guide) or a SQL
92/93 reference? I am interested specifically with doing date calculations
using fields from DB, BACKUPS, and FILESPACES and NODES. Particularly, I
need to be able to add & subtact dates at a whim. THe command line adsm
client allows queries against ACTLOG like so:

q actlog begindate=TODAY-1 begintime=17:00:00 enddate=TODAY
endtime=05:59:59

effectively delivering me a specific date range from the activity log.

Utilizing the same general syntax (which does not work), I think you can
ascertain what I'm trying to get from the following:

Example: (from the shell)

dsmadmc -id=id -pa=pa -outfile=out.file -commadelimited "select
NODE_NAME,PWSET_TIME from NODES where PWSET_TIME>TODAY-100"

I want a listing of all PWSET times older than around 100 days. Thataways I
can harass those folks to change their passwords (Hospital policy prevents
from using PW aging techniques...one person can't get logged in fast enough,
someone has less of a chance of surviving trauma).

So then, to acheive the above desired result, what would my syntax be to
select all the node_name(s) and PW_SET dates older than 100 days?

Thanks!

Backup of clients not finishing within 5 hour window

2001-06-25 Thread Joe Cascanette

I have just upgraded from 3.1 ADSM server to 4.1 TSM server and have a few
backup clients that keep loosing connections (drop from timeouts):

I have uninstalled ADSM 3.1 Client from the servers, removed the ADSM
Services manually, and after a reboot, installed TSM 4.1 Client. I have also
installed the latest patch IP22151_19.exe and when the backup sessions start
the Client opens up 3 session to the server (great), but one by one they
will time out (see logs from the server and client below). These servers do
not have any connectivity problems with other servers except my TSM.

I am waiting for the new TSM Server (v4.2 - i believe) that will hopefully
solve this problem. TSM Server 4.1.3 is available, however a
uninstall/install is required to complete this install (from what I have
read).

Anyone else have this problem?. I have also search through the web site
(tivoli.com) for solutions, and no luck.

Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

Joe

Re: Recovery log Pct. Utilized

2001-06-25 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.

>Are there any processes or sessions running? They could be holding the log
>utilization up.

This is a tough one to answer Nick. The server kicked me out the first time
I tried to query anything. I was lucky enough to have a console window open
and could see the system wasn't allowing anyone to get in, backups were
either missed or failed. Unfortunately I don't know the exact message that
was scrolling the screen but it was related to the log being full, and
obviously since the log was full it didn't write to it. The last log entry
was about 10:45 PM then it picks up again after I extended the log and
restarted at 5 AM.

I could see during that evening the server was getting lots of log entries
for this "Session open with XXX.XXX.XXX.XXX failed due to connection
refusal". There are quite a few other servers which had the same thing going
on so there are hundreds of these. Unfortunately I don't have acces to these
nodes to stop and start the Scheduler service to make the backup kick in.

I obviously never expected this to happen to me. With as few backups I have
on Saturday night, doing one db backup and one incremental daily I thought
was enough to keep a 4GB log from filling up. I can see that I was mistaken
and have now taken the necessary steps to, hopefully, not see this again.

The burning question still is this: If I have scratch tapes available, a
schedule with 1 full and 1 incremental db backup daily about 12 hours apart,
and the log fills, will the full or incremental db backup be able to run and
clear the log or do I still have to shutdown and make space?

The problem is probably related to your TCP/IP configuration. Attempt to
'ping' your ADSM server as soon as the error occurs.
In addition, use 'query opt' to check the following settings on your
ADSM server:

1. COMMTIMEOUT is on 60 (sec.) by default; increase to 900.

2. IDLETIMEOUT is on 15 (min.) by default.

Parameter COMMTIMEOUT is reset by the following ADSM command:

adsm> setopt COMMTIMEOUT

I use the DAYS function for this kind
of queries.
Here is an example:

select node_name as "Node Name", \
days(current_date)-days(lastacc_time) as "Last access (>10)" \
from nodes \
where (days(lastacc_time) < (days(current_date)-10))

Hope this helps,

A valid SQL syntax for your request is :

TSM and TDP for Domino command file.

2001-06-25 Thread Brian L. Nick

We are running TSM 3.7.4 on OS/390 2.10 and we are attempting to configure
a TDP for domino environment. My issue is this when we attempt to do a
scheduled TDP Incremental client backup of the node we receive a return
code 1 when the command file is executed.

I can execute the TDP incremental backup of the client from the command
line. The only time I have trouble is using the TSM scheduler.

I have 2 dsm.opt files on the node one in the TSM baclient directory and
the other in the TSM domino directory. I have also verified the domdsm.cfg
file and I believe that these are all set up correctly. I am using unique
node names for the TSM client and Domino clients.

I understand that this in not allot of information but if anyone has any
ideas for me I am all ears.

Thanks for your help on this.

 Brian.

Pre schedule command to stop NT service ??

Re: Pre schedule command to stop NT service ??

2001-06-25 Thread Murray, Jim

We have to do the same here for some Pervasive SQL databases I can't seem to
get rid of. We use the AT scheduler to kick off a batch file half an hour
before the scheduled time of back up. The batch file looks like this:

net stop "Btrieve v7.0 for Windows NT (Server Edition)"
net stop "Scalable SQL v4.0 for NT (Server Edition)"

Run another batch file an hour after the backup should end (to allow for the
glitches)

net start "Btrieve v7.0 for Windows NT (Server Edition)"
net start "Scalable SQL v4.0 for NT (Server Edition)"

works fine for us use it on 3 different servers.

Re: Pre schedule command to stop NT service ??

2001-06-25 Thread Doug Thorneycroft

Just create a batch file that contains the line "net stop "
 Where Service_Name is the
service that you want to start.
(I use ADSMSTOP.CMD for the filename.)
in the DSM.OPT file, add the line:
PRESCHEDULECMD "C:\tivoli\tsm\baclient\ADSMSTOP.CMD"

(Adjusting the path to match your system. The batch file doesn't have to
reside in the TSM directory)

You can also add a POSTSCHEDULECMD to restart the service after the backup
completes.

Note: The Scheduler service must be stopped and restarted before the command
will become active,
and the Scheduler must be running under an account that has NT rights to stop
the service.

Web client access on a Cluster server

2001-06-25 Thread Tyree, David

We are running a 3.7.2 server on a WinNT 4 sp5 machine talking to a
4.1.2 client on a Win2k sp2 Cluster server.
All the backups and the restores on the cluster server are fine. The
problem is that we can't get the web client piece to work on all the nodes.
The only way I can do restores is from the GUI on the cluster server. It
would be nice to be able to do a restore from a users PC and not have to go
back to the computer room. All of the other web clients work just fine.
I used the following node names, darthvader, darthmaul,
v_darthvader, and v_darthmaul. The darthvader and darthmaul nodes cover the
local drives that contain the OS. The other two cover the shared resources.
I can go to http://darthmaul:1581 and
http://darthvader:1581 and get to the local drives
for restores and backups. If I try to go to http://v_darthvader:1581
  or http://v_darthmaul:1581
I get a "This page cannot be displayed" error.
The dsm.opt files look right to me, at least the normal scheduled
backups are running fine.
I've got a call into support (PMR80135,BRE) but nothing so far.
Any ideas??

Diskpool size for DirMc

For restore purpose, we are interested in setting up a diskpool for DirMc.
We have a DB size of 27 G, about 25 NT clients (mainly Lotus Notes & Lan)

Our nightly backup is about 200 G and we don't use any TDP agents.

I would be interested to get a ballpark figure for the size of disk

Re: What volume is my backup on, at time of restore?

2001-06-25 Thread Alex Paschal

I don't think that information is actually available. If you take a look at
the CONTENTS table, it'll tell you what files live on a volume. However, it
doesn't give you a way to map the file to the correct _version_ of the file
you wish to restore. Can anyone look and see if they might have added the
OBJECT_ID to the CONTENTS table in 4.1? I'm not quite there yet.

What I don't understand is why it takes so darn long for the query to run,
when TSM can find the tape it needs very quickly when you run the actual
restore command. What is really needed is "preview" option like on the
restore volume command. Just my opinion.

Hello,

When I first read this I thought it would simply be easier for TSM to
take
care of the restore. However, IF, you have a screaming fast server where
TSM
runs the massive searches, the script could be pretty handy used in the
right places.

If anyone has one out there I would like to see it also.

Re: Exchange mailbox restores

2001-06-25 Thread BURDEN,Anthony

The steps are as follows,

1. Install the TSM exchange agent software onto a different/new exchange
server.
2. Configure the DSM.OPT file to be the sever that you need to restore.
Eg(the name of the server that has the mail box)
3. Restore the exchange private store to the new exchange server, using the
GUI.
4. Run the constancy checker (can take a while)
5. open the individual mail box that you need and make a PST file.
6. Copy the file to a location that the user can access.
7. Configure the exchange client to open the new PST file.

I think that all, hope it helps

full drives & offsite pool

2001-06-25 Thread chris harris

Hi,
We run ADSM 3.1 on AIX with a StorageTek DLT cabinet
w/6 drives.
We're starting to run into some minor drive
availability issues. I thought of a potential
solution (it should at least help), but don't know how
feasible it is. Here's the situation:

Our backups go to disk.

During the day, we migrate the data from disk to DLT
tape using
   update stgpool backuppool
where "stgpool" is the onsite DLT pool, and
"backuppool" is the disk

Then, we copy the data from the onsite DLT pool to the
offsite DLT pool using
   backup stg dltops dltoffsite
where "dltops" is one of our onsite DLT pools, and
"dltoffsite" is the offsite DLT pool.

So the data trail is:
Disk->OnsiteDLT then OnsiteDLT->OffsiteDLT (which
requires 3 drive mounts in a 24 hour period)

Because we've got a handfull of storage pools to copy
to "dltoffsite", and a few other processes which go
directly to tape, we've been running into drive
availability issues.

My question is this, is there some way to make, both,
onsite and offsite copies straight from disk to tape?

The new data trail would be:
Disk->OnsiteDLT then Disk->OffsiteDLT (which requires
2 drive mounts in a 24 hour period)

Beside using up fewer drives, it seems that the
migration from disk to tape is considerably faster
than the copy from tape to tape, e.g. one of our
migrations is set to run 4 hours. The tape to tape
copy can sometimes take >12.

The one reason I can see that this would not work is
in the case of restoring volumes. Does ADSM build the
relational database between onsite and offsite during
our copy, making the copy process necessary? or can it
build the database purely by matching the data between
onsite and offsite volumes?

Thanks,
ch

Just a little issue I am having and was looking for some help/ideas.

I have a SAN that I am attempting to backup and when I schedule the backup

in the event log for TSM or NT.

TSM Config
TSM Server 4.1.3
TSM Client 4.1.2.12

The font end is a Compaq ML530 running W2k Server attached to a Compaq/Dec

Open AFS?

2001-06-25 Thread Suad Musovich

Is there any way to backup a Open AFS filesystem?

I see AFS support for AIX but I can't tell if it extends to Open AFS.

There is also a reference in the developerworks site that you can
compile in Support via the TSM api but aren't sure whether that is
equivalent to a TDP, or I'm barking up the wrong tree.

Anybody been through this?
