Netapps for ADSM Server?

2001-07-13 Thread Thomas A. La Porte

Just out of curiosity, has anybody experimented with using a
Network Appliance, or other similar network attached storage
devices, for their ADSM database or logs?

We are using Network Appliance Filers very successfully on our
Oracle servers, so I was curious about the possibility of using
them on our ADSM servers. Just wondering if anybody else has gone
down this path before me, or have even thought about it.

Hmm, we have about a dozen tapes in this state that are empty but not empty.
We have even brought the tapes back on site and tried the 'audit vol...
fix=yes' command on them and they still are not getting cleared up. We have
opened a call with Tivoli but they have yet to be able to fix it. We are on
AIX 4.3.3 at TSM version 4.1.1, so I'm not sure if our problems are related,
but if they find a fix for us, I'll let you know what it is.

Bring the volume back (it's empty, anyway). Check it in, run AUDIT VOL

That usually fixes this problem.

 600206 - unexpected result code (1).
14:00:21 ANR1092W Space reclamation terminated for volume 600206 -

A 'query content 600206' command reports 'No match found using

I've seen all the replies and they are all good, but I don't think
they will solve your problem. I think the most telling problem is that when
you run backups individually, they work great, but when you have multiple
sessions and processes running at the same time, they all seem to bog down.
We are running 2 of our TSM servers on M80s and they just scream.

It sounds like what bit us when we upgraded to AIX 4.3.3. Because of
the way TSM threads it's jobs, if you don't have a certain setting in AIX,
your TSM server will become a single threaded beast and really bog down.
>From the TSM 4.1.1 readme:

* Possible performance degradation due to threading *

On some systems Tivoli Storage Manager for AIX may exhibit significant
performance degradation due to TSM using user threads instead of
kernel threads.

This may be an AIX problem however, to avoid the performance degradation
you should set the following environment variables before you start
the server.

export AIXTHREAD_MNRATIO=1:1
export AIXTHREAD_SCOPE=S
___

Making these changes don't require a reboot, so it's worth a shot to
add these in, make sure they get sourced into your current environment (by
logging out & back in, or just running these 2 lines) and then stop and
start the ADSM service.

2001-07-13 Thread Yury Us

Hi everybody,
Currently we use ADSM for back up only, but there are some other components,
so I am trying to get information about those components too and need a good
advice.

SUTUATION: We have few overseas locations in different countries, where
development is taking place.

So this is a very important task monitoring the software installed on all
PC, servicepacks installed on every single PC, to make the possible
transition from overseas computers here in headquarters.

Another important task is deployment and installation the software to the
clients. Sometimes it is a hundred PC on client site.

Third task is to produce the servisepacks and deploy them to client.

Next very important task is keeping track about what the client has.

QUESTION: Does anybody has experience with Tivoli that covers the listed
above issues?
Documentation claims that all that software exists already. If there are
people who think that using that software is a smart choice I would
appreciate the answer.

David,

I found it a little easier to do setting up a schedule through the
web interface. I didn't use command line on the client side because I do
not have root access to the server that was having this problem. From the
command line you can issue.

dsmc i /dir/subdir/*

This should back up the specified directory, it's subdirectories and
files with disregard to the include exclude list.

I can see how my first post was misleading. I hope this works for
you

Re: missing volumes

2001-07-13 Thread Kai Hintze

Hi Steve,

Yes, the tape is scratchable, but you have to explicitly "update libvol
3575lib1 11824f status=scratch". You might want to "q content 11824f" first
just to make sure there isn't anything on the tape. As you surmised, the
library gets confused sometimes and when it can't find the tape it was
looking for it marks the tape private so that TSM doesn't look for it any
more.

Re: List Archives by description

2001-07-13 Thread Richard Sims

>I tried 'dsmc q archive "/*" -desc="my description' got nothing found

Welcome to the ranks of the frustrated, Jim. The B/A client manual
doesn't describe the real techniques that need to be employed to make
some of the client commands yield expected results.
What we'd like to do is say "look for all my archive files, beginning
at the root of the mounted file systems". But it doesn't want to comply.
What you have to do is restrict the search to a file system.
For example, if your file activity is in /home, you can do:
  dsmc q archive /home/ -subdir=yes -desc="whatever"
That should turn up all your files in that area.
Note the foolishness of these client commands: unless you code a
slash (/) or slash-asterisk (/*) at the end of the directory name,
the commands assume that you are looking for an individual *file*
of that name, and turns up nothing. Aye, carumba!

4.2 has a function called 'convert archive'. this is to replace the need to
access the server from the GUI atleast once before you could query on desc

check in the manual.. if that doesn't work..

Does anyone know how I can get, from a client, alist of archived files that
match description?

I tried 'dsmc q archive "/*" -desc="my description' got nothing found

I can do a 'dsmc q archive "{filespec}"' and it provides the description
for the matching files in the results. I therefore expect that there should
be a way to ask for a list of archived files that have a common description.

2001-07-13 Thread Jim Taylor

Does anyone know how I can get, from a client, alist of archived files that
match description?

I tried 'dsmc q archive "/*" -desc="my description' got nothing found

I can do a 'dsmc q archive "{filespec}"' and it provides the description
for the matching files in the results. I therefore expect that there should
be a way to ask for a list of archived files that have a common description.

ThanX in Advance,

I've found very rarely that the passwords between the client and server get
out of sync. You may want to try resetting the password on the TSM server
and then resetting the password on the client.

Check the dsm.opt file. If the parameter
DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL
is present it will pick up all the drives including mapped drives.
Else you will have to put in the
DOMAIN C:

Re: Schedule DB Backup not executing.

2001-07-13 Thread Nicholas Cassimatis

You have "xx" in as the last updater of the schedule. Not sure if your
TSM Admin ID is really a string of x's or not, but if that ID isn't present
on the system any more, or no longer has the authority to run the BACKUP DB
command, the schedule will fail. Also, since you're going to a scratch
tape, you need to make sure you have scratch tapes available. You should
see some entries in the actlog around 08:00 to tell you why it failed.

Hmm. Given that, and whereas it takes 10x longer for the client to
do backups with compression than without, does your client backup
log show retries with compression? I'm wondering if it's something
like having COMPRESSAlways No in effect and the files already being
compressed such that the expand in client compression and the
transaction has to be repeated? There should be some indication in
your logs as to why this behavior is occurring. If not, consider
activating client tracing for a sample job.

The client machine are very powerfull because they are used as file and print

The solution cannot be to use more powerfull clients.

One machine= (one big db and one TSM server) or (two smaller db and two TSM servers)

2001-07-13 Thread Adam Boyer

Hello,

We will be moving all of our backup clients over to TSM shortly. Currently,
we are in the designing phase, and one of our major questions is this:

One of our future backup clients is quite big, with around 30 million
objects. This is probably not far from the sum of all objects on all of our
other future clients.

We have one backup server, a Sun UE450 with 4 x 300 MHz CPUs and up to two GB
RAM available for our use.

We are wondering if it is advantageous to run two TSM servers on that one
machine. One instance and its databse would be dedicated to the one big
client, and one instance of the TSM server would be for everything else.
This would make one large database into two smaller databases, possibly
improving performance of TSM operations for the majority of machines in our
environment. But, then we'd also have two servers competing for resources,
etc.

So, to sum: how much of a negative impact would doubling our database size,
from 22 GB to 44 GB, have? Could this be allayed by running two TSM servers
on our backup server? Are there other considerations/complications?

Any advice is greatly appreciated.

(I searched the archives, however, so please do not refer me to them in
general, but if you know of a specific message that pertains, that would be
great.)

Look at idlewait (client think time and compression time, comm wait (network
time), and media wait (TSM server time) in the accounting log
(server-dir/dsmaccnt.log - you may need to SET ACCOUNTING ON)

Then you can definitely see where the slowdown is. Compression on a low-end
client will slow things down. Can your netwrok hardware do compression
instead?

2001-07-13 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU

Well, this is a lot closer to what I am looking for.

It almost worked.

Now it gets stuck in a prompt loop:

ANR2963W This SQL query may produce a very large result table ...

Do you wish to proceed? (Yes/No)
Do you wish to proceed? (Yes/No)
Do you wish to proceed? (Yes/No)
..

Is there a way to turn off the prompts ?

I guess I didn't make my self clear. I am running ADSM in batch, not

The only reason the "+" works is because it is TSO in BATCH ! Here is

//SYSPRINT DD   SYSOUT=*

 select volume_name,stgpool_name,pct_utilized from volumes where

I have tried "-", "+" and even "/" as was suggested by a co-worker ! Still
nothing. I get:

Hi Zoltan,

Why don't you run the tso batch interface - seeing that your current way
does not work as you've indicated.
The sample JCL I sent you uses IKJEFT01 utility which gives you a
batch interface into TSO - which in turn gives you an interface into the
admin client - as far as I can make out this is what you want to achieve.
Seeing that the + works in batch why not go for it - you have nothing to
loose.

Cheers

Is there anything in the actlog indicating it started and failed? Maybe,
because there aren't enough drives and the db backup doesn't have a high
enough priority to override the stg pool backup?

When you query admin events, does it even show up as a future event?

We use the following schedule to do a daily full backup of the database.
This is TSM 3.7 running on AIX 4.3.3. The past week I have noticed that
this schedule does not appear to be executing at all. The only other
process that is consistently running at this time is a storage pool backup.
I can start the db backup manually with no problems using the same command
listed in the schedule. This schedule has worked for a long time and I can
not recall any changes we have made in the past month that could be a cause.
Any ideas on this problem.

David - You can use two incl/excl lists...but in your current case,
TSM sees them as applying to the same filespace, so you
have the dilemma you encountered. What can do is make TSM believe that the
single filespace is two different filespaces. Recall that files are unique per
the combination of nodename, filespace name, and filename. If you institute
an alternate nodename in your client, you can have an alternate image of your
filespace on the server (in total). You can achieve this via an alternate
server stanza in your dsm.sys file which specifies a nodename of convenience for
your purposes. Whether you want to commit that much redundant server space is
a decision factor.

using compression on netware tsm clients

2001-07-13 Thread Juergen Heinrich

Hi,

We are using compression on tsm netware clients (netware version 5.0 and 5.1).
The Netware Server are dual pentium systems with 256 and 512 MByte RAM
The TSM Client Version is 4.1.2.13
The client option file:
(See attached file: Dsm.opt)

The backup speed of the incremental backup is very slow.
We do need compression, because we are using WAN connections (max speed
256 KBit/s) to the TSM server.

We have tested the uncompressed and compressed backup in a LAN (100 MBit/s
ethernet)
environment.
It seems to be that the speed of uncompressed backups is up to 10 time higher!

Did anybody know a solution for this problem?

Why do you not want to run your batch sql using the ikjeft01 batch program and
calling a macro ?
That way you can build up a library of your all commonly used sql.
See below some rexx for invoking the dsmc tso interface in the batch jcl uusing

  ADSM_OK = 1 /* to indicate ADSM is active  */
  LEAVE ctr
end
End

If ADSM_OK then NOP
  else/* ADSM not up,so can't continue */
do
Say 'DSMC TSO client interface is not available as ADSM is not'
  Say 'running on this system.'
  Exit
end

Hi all TSMers,

I am trying to build an include/exclude list for a
HPUX box. I want to backup something sometimes and not
to backup this same thing others, the problem is that
if I put it on an exclude statement, I will never be
able to backup it unless I include it again. I have
this:

/opt/tivoli
/opt/OMImag
/opt/netscape
/opt/MC1
/opt/MC2
.
.
/opt/MC6
/opt/data
/opt/development
.
.
.
/opt/lotsofdirs

I want to backup the whole /opt filesystem but the MC1
and MC2...MC6 in the night and to backup only this MC*
at in the day.

I have already tryied to use two incl/excl lists but
when I use the second one and some file that was
included is now excluded it is automaticly deleted by
an expiration process.

I tryied to do the backup with a dsmc command but it
becomes an never-ending line (too long).

Hope you can give some advice.

David.

Since a working operating system is a pre-req to using ADSM/TSM,
there's
not much value in using ADSM/TSM for the bare metal phase of system

I had this probelm as well.

You need to specify the filesystem this way --
/export/nim/mksysb/sysbkp/selective/*

Try that to see if it works.

logical volume backup or image backup

Does anyone know how to do an image backup or a logical volume backup ? I
was told this is quicker to backup and restore because tsm looks at it like
it's one file. Please let me know. Thanks

2001-07-13 Thread Arnaud Brion

Hi Pothula,

Concerning message ANS1804E, I have no answer for you, but the most astonishing thing
is your first message "No files matching search criteria were found" : if you're sure
there were data in this directory, you should not have this message.
According to my own experience, you should have a look at your "exclude" statements in
this client node option file : if you excluded this directory, even if you explicitely
start a selective backup of it, nothing will be backed up !
Hope this helps ;-))

Since a working operating system is a pre-req to using ADSM/TSM, there's
not much value in using ADSM/TSM for the bare metal phase of system
recovery. The Kernel Group is a principal provider of bare metal restore
capabilities. See www.tkg.com/products.html .

TSM SQL capabilities are subset, as described in the Admin Guide and Admin
Reference manuals. See also the ADSMv3 Technical Guide redbook.
There is also: "Using the ADSM SQL Interface",

(a PostScript file, to print or see with a utility like the free Ghostscript or

When you run the dsm session. There is an option to change you
login/connection from the menu bar ( FILE / LOGON ). On the server you
want
to restore to login to dsm as the server you want to restore from. From
there on it is the same as usual.

The fourth field from Query LIBVolume, Last Use, may be blank if the volume was
last used for a DUMPDB operation or, more commonly, the volume is empty and
Defined to a storage pool. Query Volume should tell you more.

This is where your Activity Log comes into play. Customers should have entries
going back as far as any volume is likely to have a single use, which may be a
year or more. That is, you want to be able to determine what happened to
volumes in their last transition (from Scratch to Private, for example).
Perform a Query ACtlog search on those volumes to determine what has been
happening to them.

hi yahya
try out this option from aix prompt of any node where u wanna restore this
directory or files.

dsmc restore -virtualnodname=nodename

See that you have owenship permissions for accessing the above node or else
u can use 'admin' id to restore.

Re: LTO 3583 terrible reclamation performance

Hi Don and Tomáš

The correct link for the firmware is
http://ssddom01.storage.ibm.com/techsup/swtechsup.nsf/support/ultrium3583fmr

The other link points to an older version of the firmware last time I
checked.

Also, before powering of the library to re-initialise the tape drives after
a firmware upgrade, open the door and let the robotics move to the bottom
under its own control. If you don't a cable may come loose when the robotics
hit the bottom

Search the archives for "LTO Performance", for full history... the essential

For 3580, 3581, and 3583 mach types (Customer Setup), the customer can
download 0CE1 from:
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/358x
Choose 0CE1.fmr
Instructions for verifying the current LTO drive microcode release and how
to install the new release can be found in the IBM Ultrium Device
Drivers Installation and Users Guide available from:
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/devdrvr/
For 3584s, have the customer request his CE update the LTO drive microcode.

Hi all,

one of our customer has terrible reclamation, move data and audit volume
performance on 3583 LTO library - about 40 MB/hour of reclaimed data
wvhole reclamation of one volume take "week", although backup and
restore operations goes at normal speed (seconds for megabytes). Any ideas?

TSM 4.1.3.0 on AIX 4.3.3, LTO 3583 (one drive) with last firmware 2.50.0025,
20GB reclaimpool on disk.

Auto clean of 3590 drive

2001-07-13 Thread Ganu Sachin, IBM

Hi

I have RS/6000 SP2 with AIX 4.3.3 and Tivoli Stoarge Manager 3.7.0. I have
3590 E11 & 3590 B11 connected to it. I use these drive for TSM use only. For
both the drives, I have set Clean option to ASNEEDED at TSM level. However
Autoclean is happening only for B11 and not E11 drive. Any guess ?

The Atape version is 5.0.2.0
