It's a problem for example i want to backup a fileserver from my

Re: Client for VMS on a Digital Alpha box

2001-09-03 Thread MORGAN TONY

Hi David,

There is an Add-in for TSM/VMS backups, but I believe its a 3rd party
product... I'm sure that someone will respond on that

But... As a VMS System Manager for many years, I would suggest that you
ensure that your backup regime includes regular OpenVMS Image backups,
preferably Standalone Backups (Bare metal recovery since the 1980's!!),
using the VMS backup command set. Or at least a
"Backup/image/ignore=interlock".
Backup on VMS is a superb tool, but if you need more control I can recommend
"Tapesys" from SP32/Inc, which uses hooked native VMS Backup, which can be
restored from the VMS command line... pretty useful.
(Tivoli would do well to look at this product... The will get some ideas
about how a backup product should be - ie. Built in Report Writer)

I hope that this helps..
PS. I am a fan, I have no other interests in Tapesys or OpenVMS.

Rgds.

Re: Cannot delete tape in empty status... media state is incorrect - UPDATE

Dear colleagues,

I didn't think this would resolve this way, but... I just looked at this
tape again, and it IS NOT EMPTY ANYMORE! I never saw it go into the
scratch pool, and it is still in the same storage pool (ARCHLOG_TAPE).
That storage pool is used for Oracle achived redo logs, and we back those
up every hour or two on every system with an Oracle database in archive
mode. Here's a clip from my activity log...

08/31/01 16:16:52 ANR1425W Scratch volume DBR086 is empty but will not
be deleted - volume state is "mountablenotinlib".
  09/01/01 10:32:56 ANR8337I DLT volume DBR086 mounted in drive DRIVE3
(/dev/mt11).
  09/01/01 11:49:57 ANR8325I Dismounting volume DBR086 - 60 minute mount
retention expired.
09/01/01 11:50:18 ANR8336I Verifying label of DLT volume DBR086 in
drive DRIVE3 (/dev/mt11).
  09/01/01 11:51:46 ANR8468I DLT volume DBR086 dismounted from drive
DRIVE3 (/dev/mt11) in library ATL.
  09/02/01 09:18:27 ANR1228I Removable volume DBR086 is required for
storage pool backup.
09/02/01 09:18:27 ANR8324I DLT volume DBR086 is expected to be mounted
(R/W).
  09/02/01 09:20:00 ANR8337I DLT volume DBR086 mounted in drive DRIVE0
(/dev/mt8).

Looks like it was used yesterday morning for a storage pool backup. I'm
wondering now if another admin defined this tape as belonging to that
storage pool... although I would think I should have been able to delete
it. And there's still the media state discrepancy issue.

Oh well, I guess we'll just move forward, and wath to see if it happens
again!

Thanks to all for your suggestions.

we want to use the following procedures:
a) "q drm * wherest=mountable" (to get a report)
b) "move drm * wherest=mountable tostate=notmountable"
c) "move drm * wherest=notmountable tostate=vault"

I understand that during checkout of the concerning drm tapes

can this be bypassed ??? e.g. using remove=bulk option !!!??

Re: examined Vs backed up Vs changed

2001-09-03 Thread Robin Sharpe

Pothula,

There is a table called SUMMARY which stores a record for each session and
process, for 30 days (by default). It has two fileds, EXAMINED and
AFFECTED, which are supposed to supply the information you need. You
summarize it like this:

SELECT SUM(EXAMINED),SUM(AFFECTED) FROM SUMMARY WHERE DATE(START_TIME)
='09/01/2001'

That's the good news. The bad news is that the examined column is not
correct... it is the same as affected :( It was like this at the 3.7.3
level, and I was hoping it would be fixed, but I just upgraded to 4.1.4.1
last week, and it still is broken. I guess it's time to open another PMR.

Re: Cannot delete tape in empty status... media state is incorrect - UPDATE

2001-09-03 Thread Robin Sharpe

Actually, when reuse comes into play, the tape goes PENDING. Like this:
FILLING -> FULL -> EMPTY -> PENDING -> deleted (scratch).
I have reuse set to 0 for our "local" pools, and 2 for copy pools. This
one was in a local pool, so it should have been deleted as soon as it
became EMPTY, but it wasn't.

BTW, I don't think I ever mentioned that we have over 1000 tapes, and
normally have up to 15 tapes a day going back into the scratch pool. I've
never seen a tape hang in the EMPTY status like this one did.

Erm, I'm not sure if this has been said before, but I thought that a tape
in a state of 'empty' would remain that way until the re-use delay period
had passed after which time it would become a vault-retrieve or scratch
volume. That could be why your tape went from 'empty' to being used without
you seeing it.

I'm pretty new to all this though, so it's just me thinking aloud.

dsmadmc command line.

Re: Offsite tapes

2001-09-03 Thread Lindsay Morris

If you're using DRM,
q drm * wherestate=vaultretrieve
makes a list.
Before you can check them in, do
move drm * wherestate=vaultretrieve tostate=onsiteretrieve.

examined Vs backed up Vs changed

2001-09-03 Thread Pothula S Paparao

Hi TSM gurus,
Here is an exercise ...
how do i know how many files examined ,how many files actually backed up
and how many files changed daily in my library(consolidated) using a select
statement.
I have a 3575 setup. i have tremendous data growth. Answer to the above
query really helps me alot for certain stat. analysis.

THanks in advance.
regards
sree.

Missing Link : date / time

2001-09-03 Thread wouter-v

Hello,

When I run the command "q event * incremental_portables beginddate=today-30
enddate=today" | grep -i "completed"

I get (part of the info) :

08/20/01 08:30:00 08/20/01 09:34:50 INCREMENTAL_- PC-EGLS
  Completed
08/21/01 08:30:00 08/21/01 10:29:53 INCREMENTAL_- PC-EGLS
  Completed
08/21/01 08:30:00 08/21/01 13:22:34 INCREMENTAL_- PC-PDNL
  Completed
08/22/01 08:30:00 08/22/01 09:13:02 INCREMENTAL_- PC-EGLS
  Completed
08/23/01 08:30:00 INCREMENTAL_- PC-EGLS
  Completed
08/27/01 08:30:00 08/27/01 12:31:39 INCREMENTAL_- PC-EGLS
  Completed
08/27/01 08:30:00 08/27/01 10:56:56 INCREMENTAL_- PC-JHNS
  Completed
08/28/01 08:30:00 08/28/01 08:44:16 INCREMENTAL_- PC-EGLS

You can see : at the 5th line I'm missing a backupdate and backuptime although
the job is completed. This is very annoying because I use this output as a
basis for my backupreport. In the report I do an awk '{print $6}' of the
above output which does not give the right result if there is an empty "date"
or "time". Can anybody explain me why the date isn't filled in ?? Or tell me
how I can avoid these kind of problems ??

Thank you very much.

Regards,

Wouter V.
