Restore Linux filesystem, RedHat 7.1

2001-09-13 Thread Yahya Ilyas

I need to restore / filesystem of Linux RedHat 7.1 on a different machine.
I have a new machine with just Linux 7.1 and TSM client on it. I want to
restore / filesystem from a similar machine to this new machine.

I know how to do restore from one node to another, but since it is /
filesystem, restore does not work.
Thanks

Hello everyone !!!

There are any posibilitty for the ADSM doesn't use the tapes that i have

SINGLE DRIVE BACKUP STGPOOL/RECLAIM/TDRM

2001-09-13 Thread Gerardo Zapata

Hello everyone,

We have a TSM Server 4.1.3 running on AIX 4.3.3. We have a 3494 tape library
with only one 3590 tape drive.
We need to perform Storage Pool Backup of a primary TAPEPOOL (3590
devclass).
I know that it is possible to define a device class FILE and a FILE_COPYPOOL
associated to this device class.

The next command would make a copy of the TAPEPOOL using the FILE_COPYPOOL:

tsm> copy stgpool TAPEPOOL FILE_COPYPOOL

My questions having in mind two important considerations:

1) We will use Tivoli Disaster Recovery Manager. How do I manage DRM
volumes?
Copy Pool volumes are first created in disk (FILE devclass). How do I move
data to a TAPE_COPYPOOL (3590 devclass)?
Which volumes are going to be taken for DRMedia use?

2) We are performing SPACE RECLAMATION for primary stgpool TAPEPOOL using a
device class type FILE.

Can we use the same disk space for both reclamation and copy stgpool?

Customer may be able to have up to 60 GB of disk space for this purpose.

Any suggestion or other possible solution for this issue?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Kyle,

I will answer these questions based on TDP for Exchange 2.2.

These settings make changes to the TDPEXC.CFG file
not the DSM.OPT file.
TDPEXC.CFG is for "TDP settings."
DSM.OPT is for "TSM API settings".

> Questions?

In the TDPEXC.CFG file, BUFFERS and BUFFERSIZE are the only two.
You can also change the options in the DSM.OPT file with
regards to TCPIP, for example:
   TCPWindowsize
   TCPBuffSize

Yes. They are sent for all future runs of TDP for Exchange.

With Exchange 2000, you can back up storage groups simultaneously.
Exchange Exchange 5.5, you can back up the IS and the DIR
simultaneously, but that doesn't buy you very much, since the
DIR is typically small.

Recovery log filling

2001-09-13 Thread Thomas Denier

We have a Windows NT system with a large SQL Server database. We use
TDP for Microsoft SQL Server 1.1 to run a full backup once a week, with
no backups on other days. These backups start on Wednesday evenings
and run into Thursday morning. Over the last couple of years the size
of the backups has grown from about 10 gigabytes to about 13 gigabytes.
Most of the data appears to the TSM server as a single enormous file.
This worked consistenly until a few weeks ago, when we started seeing
the recovery log fill up early Thursday mornings. This happened twice
in three weeks with a 252 megabyte recovery log. After the second
failure we enlarged the recovery log to 540 megabytes, in the hope
that more than doubling the size would be enough to cope with a 30%
increase in the size of the database backup. The recovery log filled
up again this morning. Is there any way to figure out how much bigger
the recovery log needs to be?

TDP for Exchange Questions

2001-09-13 Thread Kyle Payne

We are testing TDP for Exchange. From reading the redbook I see only TDP
Buffers and TDP Buffsize as options that can be set to tune the performance.
Further, when setting these using the GUI it appears no entry is made to the
dsm.opt file in the TDP folder. Also, I didn't see a change in the
registry.

Questions?
1) Are these the only things I can set to tweak the performance?

2) When they are set are the set for scheduled backups as well? I am of
course assuming yes but wonder just slightly because I can't find where they
are being set?

3) Is there a way to get multiple backup and restore streams with the TDP
for Exchange?

4) Any other pointers?

TSM and Extended format tapes.

2001-09-13 Thread Tony Sinclair

Need some input on the following:

How does TSM handles extended length cartridges. Our biggest concern is
how does TSM track %full for recycle/reclaim processing?

If we decide to use extended length cartridges on a NSM, It has been
recommend we order them pre-labeled. So we absolutely do not want to mix
extended length with standard length in the mainframe libraries.

Any input or information is greatly appreciated.

Management class and TDP for Oracle with RMAN

2001-09-13 Thread De Blas Bellido, Vicente

Hello All.

I'm trying to configure RMAN and need some help. My scenario is AIX 4.3,
Oracle 8.1.6 and TDP for Oracle 2.2 64 bits.

My question is if it is possible to have differents management classes when
making backups with RMAN. In the TDP manual there's only reference to
TDPO_MGMT_CLASS_2, 3 and 4 but only for the duplex copy option.
I'd like to have one management class for archive log files (sending it to
disk storage pools) and another for database files (sending it to tape
storage pools).

Any suggestions ?

Thanks in advance.

Vicente de Blas.

Re: Scheduled Event Status when Pre or Post command fails

2001-09-13 Thread Doug Thorneycroft

The Scheduled event is the backup, which was successful.
The Pre-Post Schedule calls a script that runs outside the backup.
The only time I have seen a failed TSM event due to failure of a Post schedule
command was when the post schedule command hung due to a problem
unrelated to TSM. The scheduled event was waiting for it's return code to
continued,
and finally reached it's commtimeout, which caused a report of failed.

Re: Restoration of multiple directories through command line?

2001-09-13 Thread Kelly J. Lipp

I would assume the goal here is to speed the restoration process. The only
way to guarantee that happens is to ensure you don't have tape contention
during the restore. At the directory level that is hard unless you use
multiple management classes and tape storage pools.

This points out the larger problem in fine detail. If you want to do
multiple simultaneous restores you must plan for them during backup. As
manufacturers introduce 72GB drives, we're going to see enormous RAID sets
(we are already seeing enormous sets but this will make them enormouser -
new word my prerogative). You should/must break these large sets into
multiple filespaces and then use collocate=filespace on your storage pools.
I would guess the best restore times you are likely to see will be around
10GB/hour/stream. If you have a 360GB single filespace RAID set you can
expect a restore time ~36 hours. You are being foolish to expect faster.
The tape drive spec types will crawl out the woodwork and tell us that the
drives can restore much more than that per hour. Sure, but unfortunately
we're dealing with reality here and not the spec sheets. There are many
other factors influencing how fast we move data.

I know, I know, breaking the big drive into smaller ones means more
management. As long as you don't ever need to restore it creating a mongo
drive is easiest thing to do. Just remember you did this because you never
were going to restore it. Try to remember that in the middle of the second
day while you're trying to restore it.

Let's bring some rationality back to our business. Bigger isn't always
better.

Nicholas,
I think this method doesn't help.
I came across the same problem some time ago and didn't find a solution,
too.

The problem is:
When using the GUI interface you can select any set of files and folders
to be restored in ONE SESSION.

When using the CL interface you only can select one tree to be restored.
Now think of a situation where the files of your node are spread over 20
tapes. The first restore mounts 15 tapes, the second and third restore
will mount some of those 15 tapes AGAIN for sure, so you loose a lot of
time in comparison to the GUI method.

Best regards,
Michael Bartl

Scheduled Event Status when Pre or Post command fails

2001-09-13 Thread Rushforth, Tim

Does anyone know what the status of a scheduled event should be if the Pre
or Post command fails with a non zero return code?

On tests with the 4.2.0 and 4.12.12 win32 clients, the scheduled event
completes successfully even if the Prescheduled command fails with a return
code of 1.

I'm wondering if this is working as designed or if the client should show
the event as failing if a pre or post command fails.

Thanks,

The client is level 3.7.0.1 on NT, the server is 4.1.2 on AIX.

Re: OS/390 TSM usage of disk volumes

2001-09-13 Thread Christo Heuër

Hi Zoltan,

As Rene has already mentioned - this is done to maximize parallism - so
you have your performance maxed - if it did not work this way you would
have a single stream of data being pulled off a volume - also causing a
bottleneck on this particular HDA.
It is as easy as updating the volume to readonly and then moving data
from them - pretty easy.

Looking at the Admin References for TSM Ver, 3.7 and 4.1,
The available Recording formats for AIT drives are:
AIT(25 GB)
AITC (50 GB)
No format listed for AIT2

If I use one of these formats for an AIT2 drive that is supposed
to get 50GB native and up to 130GB compressed, will I only
get 25 to 50 GB?

yes, it will use the 80 volumes and distributing the IOs is good for the

OS/390 TSM usage of disk volumes

2001-09-13 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU

I have a question about how the OS/390 version of TSM utilizes disk
storage pools and why and possible future impact.

Currently, my disk "landing zone" storage pool has 38-individual DASD
volumes, for a total of 90G+. I noticed that when I do a Q VOL STG=, that
*EVERY* "volume" (i.e. data set) has something in it, rather than fill up
one before going to another (this is a royal pain when trying to
delete/add volumes, but that is a different story.). So, when doing
migration from this pool to tape, it has to perform I/O's to 38 disk
volumes as well as the tapes.

I am getting ready to more than double this pool. Does this mean that TSM
will scatter data across all 80+ volumes ?

This seems like a lot of unnecessary overhead.

Any thoughts on this ?

Re: Restoration of multiple directories through command line?

2001-09-13 Thread Nicholas Cassimatis

When I wanted to do this, I wrote a script to run the restore of each
directory/filesystem, but I had to do it one at a time. The following
would be my script with your filesystems on AIX:

dsmc restore /oracle/stage/ -subdir=yes -inactive -pitd=09/02/01
read NOTHING
dsmc restore /sapmnt/SA2/ -subdir=yes -inactive -pitd=09/02/01
read NOTHING
dsmc restore /oracle/SA2/sapreorg/ -subdir=yes -inactive -pitd=09/02/01
read NOTHING

The "read NOTHING" lines causes the script to pause for input (any
keystroke) so I was able to verify the restore went without problems (on NT
it would be "pause").

How do I do this with TSM for Domino?

2001-09-13 Thread mrkirra2001

I am using TSM for Domino v1.1.1 on NT going to an OS/390 TSM Server v4.1.3.
I would like to backup all our MAIL\ files each Saturday and then on Sunday
backup all the OTHER directories in the Domino data directory. On Sunday I
don't want to back up the MAIL\ directory again.
Anybody got any suggestions?

Here is an example of the directory structure...

E:\NOTES.DTA
-->\GLOBAL
-->\LOCAL
-->\MAIL
-->\MORE1
-->\MORE2
-->\MORE3

-->\MORE30

So, I want to do E:\NOTES.DTA\MAIL on Saturday, and all the other
directories, except \MAIL, on Sunday.
I'd prefer not to hard code each of the directories for the Sunday backup as
this does not allow for expansion, without changing the batch file.
I can't use two different .OPT files, one with the \MAIL directory excluded,
as this will expire all the previous versions of \MAIL files [won't it?].

Over to you guys...
