to

Re: cannot cancel a session

2001-09-17 Thread Hamilton, Dustin

I actually opened a PMR on this same problem (PMR#45713,519) and they told
me that (this is almost a direct quote) "...that is the way it works." In
asking, of course, they wouldnt put any of that in writing, but here is some
text cut out from the PMR itself...

Action Taken:Explained that Select statements are database intensive
and use up a lot of resources. Depending on complexity of the query it
quite possible for the server to hang. If cancel session doesn't work
then recycling Tsm is the only way out.
Customer wants something in writing confirming this. Directed to the
Admin Guide: Monitoring TSM server subsection entilted Using Sql to
Query the TSM DB, issuing select commands where it states that complicat
ed queries can interfere with normal server operations.

The problem I was having is that a select that worked on one system would
hang on another. According to the Admin Guide, it is perfect acceptable to
cancel that session with another administrator session; however from what I
have seen I wouldnt recommend it - unless you have the time to cycle your
TSM_server process.

Maurice,

Delete the "spacetrigger made volumes" and the data on these database volumes
will be moved to other database volumes. You may have to create some more
database volumes of your own first but since you are only using 43.2 % of your
database now there should be enough space.

Re: Defrag Database

2001-09-17 Thread Alex Paschal

I just had a thought. If you defined new dbvols and deleted the previous
dbvols, that would move the db data over to the new volume. Could that
possibly defrag the db at the same time? I would expect so because the
manual says you can cancel the delete dbvol process, but some of the data
may have moved. It makes sense to me that this implies it moves db objects,
not just vast tracts of raw dbspace. Any thoughts?

(Andy? Are you out there? Any chance on developer feedback on this one?)

You can use the "BackupRegistry Yes" with earlier version of Tivoli however

The script that I use is:

Asunto: Management class and TDP for Oracle with RMAN

hi,

You can use 'include' option to bind with different management class. It
is documented on page 36 of the user manual. But you will have to do a
little bit differently than what is documented.

I assume that you are using different domain for your TDPO backups. Let's
say your default mgmt class's storage pool is pointing to disk pool. So
you don't have to do anything for your database backups. As for the
archive log file, let's say you have the pattern "log_archive_format =
arch%t_%s.dbf" in your init.ora file. In your include definition file, add

include /adsmorc/.../arch* tapemgmt

This will bind the archive logs to 'tapemgmt' class.

If you don't use different domain for your TDPO backups and/or mgmt class
pointing to disk pool is not the default, you can add another line in your
include definition file:

include /adsmorc/.../arch* tapemgmt
include /adsmorc/.../* diskmgmt

Make sure that these statements appear in the exact order.

regards,
Thiha

As an aside, they're also really handy for altinst_rootvg work during

original system to altinst_rootvg, test something else, etc, much more

Solaris, RMAN and TIVOLI

2001-09-17 Thread Thiha Than

hi,

When you run RMAN backup/restore RMAN looks for a library named libobk.so
which got installed when you install TDPO. TDPO uses TSM API to connect
to TSM server to send/receive data.

> Does RMAN write directly to tape when it is doing a backup?

This depends on how you setup your policy for your TDPO node. Think of
RMAN backups as data coming from another TSM node. We recommend using a
different nodename other than the machine name for TDPO operations.

> Does anyone know where the RMAN backup pieces are on tape and the sizes
of the files?
Log on to TSM server through admin client and issue:

tsm: TSMSERV1> select * from backups where node_name='node name in
capitalized letters' AND filespace_name='/yourfs'
example:
tsm: TSMSERV1> select * from backups where node_name='TDPO' AND
filespace_name='/adsmorc'

Another command:
tsm: TSMSERV1> select * from contents where node_name='node name in
capitalized letters' AND filespace_name='/yourfs'

example:
tsm TSMSERV1> select * from contents where node_name='TDPO' AND
filespace_name='/adsmorc'

> Will Tivoli be able to reclaim tape space if the RMAN recovery catalog
is lost?

You should be more worried about reclaiming the tape space than how you
are going to restore/recover your databases if your RMAN catalog is lost.
:}

If you lost your RMAN catalog, you can rebuild another one, and
re-register your target database. Your target control file has backup
piece information. During the database registering process, these backup
piece information will be stored in RMAN catalog again. There are two
ways to reclaim your tape:
1. You can run RMAN delete command to delete the data from TSM server
through TDPO.
2. Sometimes, you end up having more backup piece entries on the TSM
server than RMAN catalog. TDPO 2.2 has a utility called tdposyn to
reclaim tape in this kind of situation.

All the information mentioned above except SQL statements are documented
in the TDPO 2.2 user manual. You can find it at:
http://www.tivoli.com/support/public/Prodman/public_manuals/storage_mgr/admanual.htm#optional

Hello Thiha.

Thanks for your help.
I'm still stuck with this issue. I have followed your instructions but it
doesn't work. Whenever I start a script to backup the archivelog files, it
keeps going to the default mgmt class.
These are my configuration files:

TDPO.CONF
  DSMI_ORC_CONFIG /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/dsm.opt
  DSMI_LOG/usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/dsierror.log
  TDPO_NODE dsiaja02_ora
  TDPO_PSWDPATH /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle

DSM.OPT
  SErvernamedsiaja04

DSM.SYS
  SErvername dsiaja04
  nodename dsiaja02_ora
COMMmethod TCPip
TCPPort1500
TCPServeraddress dsiaja04a

passwordaccess prompt
inclexcl /usr/tivoli/tsm/client/oracle/bin64/inclexcl

INCLEXCL
  include /adsmorc/.../*.arc rman_archive_log

The script that I use is:
  run{
 allocate channel 'tsm0' type 'sbt_tape';
 sql "alter system archive log current" ;
 backup archivelog all format '%d_arch_%U' delete input;
  }

Is there anything wrong?

Thank you for your cooperation !!

Make sure that these statements appear in the exact order.

regards,
Thiha

Bare Metal Restore sizing.

2001-09-17 Thread Eduardo Martinez

Hi All.

Has anyone of you ever sized an BMR solution?
I have several doubts about it.

A) Space requirements for BMR software installation

TKG says the following:

"The BMR server requires 4 megabytes of disk space plus approximately 1
KB of disk space for every 2 clients. Each Boot image on the Boot
Server will require 100 to 800 KB of disk space."

How much space am I going to need for each boot image?
Is a boot image created for each of my clients? if so, am BMR is going
to backup a boot image each time the client is backed up? in this case
I have to calculate the space on disk according the backup policies for
each one of my clients.
or
am I going to create ONLY one boot image per platform I 'm going to
backup (one image for SUN, another for NT, another for AIX)? This way
I'm going to use much less space than the above scenario.
How often are the boot images refreshed? How BMR is going to realize
that a client has upgraded its OS, when others have not?

B) Shared Root Tree

For the SRT TKG states: "Each Shared Root Tree (SRT) on the File server
will require 200 to 400 MB of disk space".

The same questions as above. Is a SRT created each time a client is
backed up?

I've calculated the space Im going to need considering I have 6 clients
(2 sun, 2 aix and 2 NTs), also that I only need one boot image per
platform (3 in this case), and also one SRT per platform too.
This makes a total of 606 MB.
Are this calculations right?

BMR Server
BMR Server 1 4MB
BMR Client 6 3.0Kb

Boot Server
Boot image 3 2MB

File Server
Shared Root Tree (SRT) 3 600 MB

  Total 606MB

Thanks in advance.

Re: Defrag Database

2001-09-17 Thread Richard L. Rhodes

The question is "what is a reorg?"

I would think moving the db to a new volume would just move the db
blocks - not changing their contents. It would collapse the unused
db blocks, but I think this would be different result than a
unload/load, which would recreate all db objects.

Kind of like the difference between moving a logical volume to a
different disk and defraging a filesystem. On a move logical volume
the physical partitions are moved, but their contents are left alone.
To defrag the filesystem requires tinkering with the contents of the
physical partition.

Just a guess . . . .

DNS Domain change effect on TSM

2001-09-17 Thread Richard L. Rhodes

Our current internal network has a bunch of dns domains resulting
from poor planning, mergers, etc. A decision has been made to
re-domain(?) our network. We are going to move all our network under
one new domain. IP numbers are NOT changing, just the domain.

The plan is to put all hosts in the the new domain, and keep the old
domain around for a while. This should allow for a quick conversion,
but eliminate a big-bang conversion.

I'm interested in issues/thoughts/comments on problems with TSM that
might come up in relation with this domain change.

Thanks

Rick

I've found that a "show archive " of a node that
was renamed will kill the tsm server every time !

seems to work OK on straight nodes... only on a node that I renamed does it
kill the tsm server process.

Not worth calling into tivoli since "show archive" is an unsupported,
undocumented, debug command.

Just throught I'd pass along advance notice !

I would be very surprised if ADSM V 3.1 supports the drives in question.
That is a very old release. Also, if the library is new, it is unlikely
that support for it will be there as well.

So the question is - why it shows data from ANOTHER fileset which resides
on ANOTHER node?

Well, in the following environment

Session established with server TSMSRV10: Solaris 2.6
  Server Version 4, Release 1, Level 4.0
  Server date/time: 09/17/01 14:27:09 Last access: 09/17/01 14:25:39

I've found that a "show archive " of a node that
was renamed will kill the tsm server every time !

seems to work OK on straight nodes... only on a node that I renamed does it
kill the tsm server process.

Not worth calling into tivoli since "show archive" is an unsupported,
undocumented, debug command.

Just throught I'd pass along advance notice !

"Kids, don't try this at home!" ;-)

Or to restore that particular file on W2k node and move it over the LAN
afterwards.

(Why are you backing up a Windows backup file? Why not just use TSM to
backup your original files?)

A thought here...

NT has a file size limit of (I think) somewhere in the 190 GB range.
You might be butting head awfully close to that wall.

The only cure I know of is to move to Win2K.
