Re: DLT 80 GB only gets 43GB of data on it.
Please put subjects on your questions so we can follow the discussion. OK, Native storage versus compressed numbers are a marketing game. The Magstar K-Tape is a 40GB native (120GB compressed), yet I see data stored as low as 75GB and as high as 240GB. It just depends on how compressable the data is. If the data is already compressed, the size when it is stored to tape can actually increase. DLT is a much poorer compression performer than Magstar so getting these numbers does not surprise me. Are you using client compression? There is a another possibility. You may have compression turned off, though I doubt it. -Original Message- From: Patrick Sheehan [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, February 25, 2002 11:26 AM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Hey TSM'rs I was wondering why I think I should be able to utilize the 80 GIG capabilities of my tapes but it appears I am not. Re: Where would I begin to answer these questions?
Ike, I have done this a little differently. What I do is identify all the cost associated with the backup process, backup servers, additional switch capacity, disk pools, tape drives, and libraries and add that up to a total dollar number. Tapes are figured separately. This infrastructure will support so many GB of disk storage on the clients involved, round numbers. This can be used to calculate a normalized cost/GB on average. You can play with the numbers of tapes and amount stored data per node to adjust a client up or down. Ultimately, the cost relates to the total number of GBs. The tape is adjusted based on the version requirements of the application/customer. If you come to Share in Nashville, I will show you how I do this for a tape library solution. -Original Message- From: Hunley, Ike [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, February 25, 2002 12:08 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Where would I begin to answer these questions? Re: DataBase File Spaces and Selective Backups
I forgot about this option mainly because I logged it away as not very useful until now. This is the way to go. Then we just put an include in the dsm.opt and run incrementals for each directory/drive. I remember dealing with this before. Actually, the documentation is wrong in this area and it is being corrected, but not related to the documentation area for selective that you are referencing. TSM - Image Backup on UNIX - any success stories or gotchas to share ?
We have an application that basically just continues to collect documents in a series of volumes/containers, 1 container at a time, beginning to end, until the container is full. Then it "freezes" that container and moves onto the next. One container could be >150GB (if we don't argue hard enough against it), and could contain 10's (maybe 100's) of millions of extremely small files in a very broad, very deep directory structure. Over 2 TeraBytes of these containers have been spec'd for this application. The overhead of taking a full backup is monumental and is likely to exceed a backup cycle if performed at the OS filesystem level. However, since the "used/full" containers become static and only one container is active at a time, this seems to be an ideal opportunity to utilize TSM Image Backup on a just-frozen container. I'm looking for a few brief success stories on the use of TSM Image Backup - please include time-savings, volume-sizing considerations, and any problems or precautions regarding image backupand image restore (please don't exclude that part of the story!) -thanks Kent Monthei GlaxoSmithKline
Compaq SAN and Bus Numbers beyond 7

I'm thinking it has a limitation of eight buses, 0-7 and can't actually see 9. Anybody have any ideas? Thanks, Kelly J. Lipp Storage Solutions Specialists, Inc. W2K and the System Objects
How do I stop the system objects (specifically the *.EXE's, *.DLL's, etc in the WINNT directory structure...) from being backed up EVERY time I do a backup on a W2K machine? These system objects are over 120MB in size and is taking up bandwidth, disk and tape space unnecessarily as they do not change that frequently. How does client open files for backup?
How does the Windows NT client (v4.2) open files for backing up? Last night we had a situation that TSM was backing up a file and another application wanted to open that file for read/writing and the second app crashed. I thought TSM open the file so that it allows all other processes to also open the file for either reading or writing. Why else detect that a file has changed if this wasn't the case? Thanks /gjs
Re: DataBase File Spaces and Selective Backups
Active/inactive backup versions are processed the same, whether they came from an incremental or from a selective backup. So yes, if you normally keep only 2 versions, and do: March 1 selective March 2 incremental March 3 selective Assuming the file changed and the March 2 backup DOES send a backup version to the server: after the backup on March 3, you have ONLY the versions from March 2 and March 3. If the file didn't change after the backup on March 2, then you have two identical copies. -Original Message- From: Seay, Paul [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, February 25, 2002 4:27 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: DataBase File Spaces and Selective Backups Actually, the question is, if the include is not there will an incremental backup expire our selective backups that specified what is on the include? Re: Include/Exclude (again)
OK, thanks. It helps to know the context of the question. :-) The EXCLUDE statement (without and . extension) excludes only files, not directories. So include/exclude statements like this: exclude *:\...\* INCLUDE D:\Oracle\backup\dev8i.dmp MCBKUP4 Will back up the one file plus all directories. It should *not* back up other files, though. But it is true that traversing the directories could take a while. Some ideas to get around this: - Create a schedule just for this client (if it isn't already dedicated to the one client) and use the OBJECTS option to indicate the one file you want to process: OBJECTS="D:\Oracle\backup\dev8i.dmp MCBKUP4" - Create a text file, say, C:\BACKUP.LIST, on the client machine that contains just the fully-qualified name of the file you wish to back up. Create a schedule just for this client (if it isn't already dedicated to the one client) and code the OPTIONS setting like this: OPTIONS="-FILELIST=C:\BACKUP.LIST" This will cause the client to process only the file(s) listed in C:\BACKUP.LIST. See Mark Morrison's post for yet another solution. There was a not-too-dissimilar discussion about this last year. You can find a post I made at http://msgs.adsm.org/cgi-bin/get/adsm0108/451.html. Why don't you do a command line call from the tsm scheduler and only have the one file to back up from the command line. I use this and it works fine. Here is "hrarchive.cmd" located on the server. Re: Spontaneous management class rebinding - how to resolve?
Wanda, you're right - setting the original/default Management Class retention settings 1 higher/longer resolved the problem. After changing the settings, the first thing we did was clean up the mess - we emptied all the unwanted TDP_OFFSITE volumes (those with 0.0 percent full) using move data vol# DISKPOOL, then migrated the misplaced data to TAPEPOOL where it belonged in the first place. - thanks ! "Undocumented" means, I think, random results. TSM is not smart enough to prefer the DEFAULT, if the RETONLY settings are the same. Change your DEFAULT class to be 1 day longer than the others, and I bet the problem goes away. -Original Message- From: Kent Monthei [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Friday, February 22, 2002 6:52 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Spontaneous management class rebinding - how to resolve? We're having a problem with Notes transaction logging on a Notes Domino server, so turned off Notes transaction logging and planned to perform full backups directly to a new, collocated off-site tapepool TDP_OFFSITE defined for this purpose and this one problem node. We defined a second management class TDPTAPE in the existing policyset, with a destination of TDP_OFFSITE instead of diskpool. The original Management Class still points to diskpool and is the Default Management Class for the domain/policyset. We then defined a new schedule, associated that 1 client with it and added the TDPTAPE Management Class binding to the 'include' statements in the TDP-Domino 'dsm.opt' file. Everything worked for this client as expected. The full (TDP 'selective') backup went directly to the new TDP_OFFSITE tapepool. However, much to our surprise (& I know you experienced ADSM/TSM'ers out there have heard this before), a whole bunch of other clients also started mounting scratch tapes for the new TDP_OFFSITE tapepool and dumping small amounts of data - probably directory info. Almost 30 tapes were written, most with 0.0 percent utilization. The TSM Server's tape library also thrashed all night mounting/unmounting/remounting tapes over 30 times each. I'm certain that this is due to spontaneous Management Class rebinding. I just don't know what caused it. I'm aware of the "longest-retention" issue. However, the verexists/verdeleted/retextra/retonly settings on the new Management Class's copygroups are identical to the default Management Class's copygroups, so it shouldn't be rebinding to the new Management Class for that reason (right??). What gives? One more thing - none of the clients have optionsets ('DIRMC' not set). Doesn't 'DIRMC' default to the Default Management Class, as long as its copygroups' retention settings aren't exceeded by some other Management Class's copygroups' settings? Which retention setting triggers MC rebinding? Does 'DIRMC' need to be set for all those other servers, to ensure that they backup everything to the default Management Class ? -rsvp, thanks (experienced help appreciated) Kent Monthei GlaxoSmithKline

Re: DataBase File Spaces and Selective Backups
Paul, exclude /fsmountpoint/.../* include /fsmountpoint/flatfilepath/flatfile.backup Ah, in NT-ese, exclude f:\...\* include f:\flatfilepath\flatfile.backup This way you'll be doing an incremental of the filesystem, but the only thing you should actually backup are your flat file backups. Would that accomplish your objectives? Alex Paschal Storage Administrator Freightliner, LLC (503) 745-6850 phone/vmail -Original Message- From: Seay, Paul [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, February 24, 2002 7:20 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: DataBase File Spaces and Selective Backups Right now we do a lot of our database backups offline without a TDP. Many of these will stay that way because they are very small databases and setting up the TDP is just too much work and cost. However, we are concerned about what this means from a filespace and backups point of view. First of all, because we never perform an incremental against these filespaces we have no filespace statistics. Second, it is very difficult to monitor selective backups because you have to search the backups table for the entire filespace name and pick the last backup from it to get something similar. We have excepted these restrictions but we started thinking about what does this mean if an incremental accidentally got run so we are considering another approach. We believe we should be doing an incremental on every database filespace no matter what except do an exclude of every file, not directory, but file, ie. do not use the exclude.dir. However, we are concerned that this may expire all the selective backups. Before we tried it we thought we would ask what everyone else is doing. The other option would be to do a selective and then an incremental which would backup nothing because it did not change. There are only 150 files max in these filespaces anyway, so it is no big deal. You may wonder why we want to do it this way. Our plan is to segregate the database storage pools here so we can eliminate the reclamation churn. Basically, everything would expire all at once and the tape would be immediately empty. However, to make that happen, we must backup everything every time. 99% of the data files change anyway so incremental would do nothing. Paul D. It should be a "COMMAND" type schedule. The COMMAND type schedule will call a specific batch file that you have set up that runs the specific TDP for SQL command. It sounds like you just have another BA client type "full" or "incremental" schedule set up instead of the kind required (ACTION=COMMAND) for TDP for SQL. Please read Appendix C in the TDP for SQL User's Guide for exact details on setting this up. Thanks, Del Del Hoobler IBM Corporation [EMAIL PROTECTED] "Celebrate we will. Re: MS SQL TDP help
I think the main thing is that the schedule you have set up for the TDP SQL backup is defined as ACTION : INCREMENTAL as a normal backup. For TDP backups ACTION should be COMMAND and in the OBJECTS parameter shoukld be something like "C:\Progra~1\Tivoli\TSM\TDPSql\sqlfull.cmd" You have an sqlfull.smp files as installed, need to copy this to sqlfull.cmd and make any needed changes. Also make changes to the dsm.opt file in TDPSql dir. Make entries for INCLUDE statements to reflect the management class you want backups to be bound to. The way this all works has changed significantly from TDP SQL 1.1, if you had it. Note also that TDP 2.2 will not work with SQL 6.5 DB's or lower, if you have any. Suggest download the TDP SQL 2.2 PDF manual from www.tivoli.com. You don't need online acount to do this. Bob, when you schedule the backup on the TSM server what action are you scheduling? Re: After Restoring a Volume?
If the restore had been COMPLETEly successful, ADSM would have gone ahead and deleted the volume (i.e., returned it to scratch) when the RESTORE completed. So there must be some data left on it. First list the contents and see what is there. Then I would try a MOVE DATA one more time, just to see if you can read any of what is left. Then if you are sure you can't get that data back, do the DELETE VOLUME DISCARDDATA=YES, understanding that you no longer have backups of those things in the CONTENTS list. If you got the original error while reading the label, then by all means, relabel it; you will also have to specify OVERWRITE=YES on your label libv command. But if the original error was down in the middle of the tape, relabelling probably won't do anything for you. I would just check it back in as SCRATCH, let TSM write over it again. -Original Message- From: Mark Bertrand [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Monday, February 25, 2002 12:32 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: After Restoring a Volume? We are trying, as earlier email indicated, to run an STK L700 library with TSM 4.1.50 running on AIX 4.3.3. The library originally shipped with Seagate Viper 200 drives. We had the library configured via smitty/TSM Devices and it was listed as available but the Seagate drives were not because in preparation for IBM drives, we had installed Atape. However, we had requested IBM Ultrium drives so the drives were replaced with the IBM's and now, the drives are available to the system, but the library is not. The error message received after running cfgmgr inidcates that the package 'devices.scsi' is not installed. Anybody ever see this? Any help would be appreciated... Thanks so much! Re: IP change on AIX
It's not clear from your message, are you changing just the servers IP or all the Novell clients also? If just the server, then you also have to change the servers IP in any client's dsm.opt that connects to server by IP, unless you havd server name instead of IP. A stop and restart of scheduler on each of the clients that you change will be necessary. If you change the IP of any client then most likley you will reboot that client to set new IP and if scheduler is set to start automatically on reboot, then it should contect the server and the server will get the clients new IP. Re: Spontaneous management class rebinding - how to resolve?
You've almost got it - it probably IS a "longest-retention issue". Andy Raibeck discussed this at length in Oct 2001 (if you want to go back and search www.adsm.org, search on : Raibeck Strange Behaviour Andy said: "If two or more management classes have the largest RETONLY setting, then it is undocumented as to which class will be selected." "Undocumented" means, I think, random results.

Mark, one way to change the AIXs IP is: 1) stop all applications (eg TSM) 2) run sh /etc/tcp.clean and sh /etc/nfs.clean ( from the console cause this stopps AIX networking ) 3) remove Network devices ( eg. rmdev -l en0 -d and rmdev -l ent0 -d ) 4) run cfgmgr to recreate the devices ( the are now *very* clean ) 5) run smitty tcpip-> minimum configuration and startup ( fill in all required information ) - starts the network 6) check /etc/hosts for possible inconsistences ( e.g. doubled hostname ) 7) retsart you applications be carfull to also update your client dsm.sys if you are not using DNS resolution - otherwise keep your DNS info in a consitent state. herfried Mark Hayden <[EMAIL PROTECTED]>@VM.MARIST.EDU> on 25.02.2002 15:51:07 Please respond to "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> Sent by: "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject: IP change on AIX Hello everyone, This is not directly related to TSM, but we are in the process of changing all of our IP addresses. Hello everyone, This is not directly related to TSM, but we are in the process of changing all of our IP addresses. On our TSM server, we are running AIX 4.3.2. Most of our file servers are Novell, so it's much easier to change IP. Is there a simple one time program to run , that will make the changes for me Thanks! Thanks, Mark Hayden Network Administrator E-Mail: [EMAIL PROTECTED]

Re: Restore Database with a 3494 library
It is a software bug that you have to be required to use libtype=manual... tivoli will be fixing this. -Original Message- From: Fred Johanson [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED]] Sent: Sunday, February 24, 2002 10:47 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Fwd: Re: Restore Database with a 3494 library This has come up a number of times recently. To repeat what the Tivoli support person told me when I ran into in real life, I should keep another version of my devconfig file handy in which the 3494 definition is replaced by DEF LIBrary tsmlib libtaype=manual. When a DB restore is necessary in either V3R7 or V4R1, use the special devconfig file, mount the backup tape(s) manually with mtlib etc, and run the restore. After the restore, whcih seems to be completed when the system actually does the commit (I guess that tells it when it's done), switch back to the reguylar devconfig file and bring up the system.
