LOG-rotation

2002-09-18 Thread Rysstad - Tor Arne

Hi everybody!

My TSM log-files are getting larger and larger..

So I am about to write a Kix-script that archives my TSM logs.

Are there any problems related to deleting the .log files for TSM?
Is the client-side log files used for anything server-side?

Thanks alot for any input!

Bare Metal Recovery with Windows 2000 Advanced Server and Interne t Explorer 6

2002-09-18 Thread Kloker Michael

I tested the last days bare metal recoveries of a Windows 2000 Advanced
Server with Internet Explorer 6 installed on it.
I followed the instructions of the basic Windows 2000 BMR procedere with TSM

- installing a windows 2000 basic system
- configuring Servername and IP address
- installing Service Pack to original level
- installing TSM Client
- performing a TSM restore of the System Partition
- performing a TSM restore of the Windows System Objects
- performing a restore of the other partitions

The result looks fine. The most settings are brought back, but the Internet
Explorer 6 is missing. Starting the Internet Explorer, shows you the
startscreen of Internet Explorer 5. If you try to repair the Internet
Explorer 6, you get a message that serveral dlls have not the right version.

My opinion is, that the dlls, which could not be restored, are in use. Is
their a solution, that TSM can restore dlls which are in use?

The best thing to do is to create a second NT instance on the server
(Winnt2) and boot from the second instance. Then restore the winnt and
adsm.sys folders. Then copy the regigstry.

create additional diskpool in adsm3.1 on AIX problem

Hi all,

Until now i've worked with tsm only and in this when you create additional
diskvolumes you create a logical volume and point tsm to the /dev/rLV. It
then formats and uses the space assigned.
Now m,y problem is creating additional diskvolumes within adsm 3.1. I,ve
tried doing this the same way, but it gives error.
I.ve tried then to create a filespace for it, but it didnt quite grasp that
either. I cant really find any usefull documentation on this and its really
important that its done todayplease help and receive my undieing

Re: Volume count and maxscratch

This shows the empty volumes in the pool.

select stgpool_name, count(*), sum(case when status='EMPTY' then 1 else 0
end) from volumes group by stgpool_name

When I added the join it runs forever as below, it is the select you want
but do not want the performance of.

select volumes.stgpool_name, count(*), sum(case when status='EMPTY' then 1
else 0 end), maxscratch from volumes, stgpools where volumes.stgpool_name =
stgpools.stgpool_name group by volumes.stgpool_name, maxscratch

Re: TSM 5.1.1 Win2000 server reboot

2002-09-18 Thread Halvorsen Geirr Gulbrand

Hi Kurt,
I have had a similar problem (maybe the same) with TSM v. 4.2.2 on an IBM
x342, with adaptec 39160 SCSI controller, and LTO library IBM 3584.
In my case it rebooted 1-2 times pr. day. I bugged me alot, but seemingly it
was a problem with the SCSI Controller Driver on w2k.
To fix this I made a database backup of TSM, and installed w2k from scratch,
then installed the correct driver for the adapter-card (found on
ftp://ftp.software.ibm.com/storage/devdrvr/Win2000/adaptec_lun.zip),
reinstalled TSM, and restored the TSM database. I haven't had the problems
after that. Now, I don't think reinstalling OS should be necessary, but I
believe the problem is something related to registry settings for device
adpu160m (the adaptec controller), and when updating this driver, some
settings still are in registry or some files exist that are not replaced
when updating the driver.
Another problem is that because the server goes down unexpectedly, TSM is
likely to have a corrupted database, and when you get the server to run OK,
you should do an AUDITDB on your tsm. (Oh my, this is slow...)
The other option is to drop your database, and just do the full backup all
over again.

Hope this helps...

Hi,

I've just installed TSM 5.1.1 on a Windows 2000 Advanced Server (SP2)

The hardware of the TSM server is:

IBM Netfinity X232 8668 (Pentium 4, 1133 MHz)
512 MB RAM
IBM ServeRAID-4LX Ultra 160 controller (SCSI controller of internal disks)
IBM LTO library connected via an Adaptec SCSI controller.

During the setup of TSM and the full backup of a number of clients, the
server has rebooted 6 times. There is no Dr. Watson or what so ever. In the
TSM activity log there are also no errors written. You just retrieve the
latest commands before the shutdown and afterwards the normal startup
messages of TSM.

Only in the event log, there is an event stating 'An unexpected system
shutdown has occured'. No other errors or warnings in the event log.

Has anybody else experienced a similar situation and how did you solve it?

Any input is more then welcome. Thanks,

Kurt

!Urgent - SDLT/TSM slow after upgrade from v. 4.2.1.7 to v. 4.2.2 .12

2002-09-18 Thread Halvorsen Geirr Gulbrand

Hi Everyone!
For one of our customers I have recently upgraded their TSM server (and TSM
device-driver) from v. 4.2.1.7 to 4.2.2.12, because of added support for
multiple modules of library Compaq MSL5026DLX.
Configuration is now:
TSM Server (+dev.driver) v. 4.2.2.12
Library Compaq MSL5025DLX (2 modules) with 3 SDLT 220 drives.

After the upgrade, many of the processes takes a very long time to complete.
Expiration used to take 10-15 minutes, takes now 1,5 hours. Database backup
used to take about 20 minutes, takes now 1-2 hours, migration is slow,
space-reclamation is very slow, and when they try to stop spacereclamation,
it takes hours before it stops.

I'm sorry I don't have any numbers (MB/s) for these processes. I might have
more data on this by tomorrow. But I would like to know if anyone else have
seen similar problems after an upgrade.

Any help is highly appreciated!

Re: Restore NT4 on difference machine

2002-09-18 Thread Christian Bagard

Hello,

We use the following process :
1.. Install system NT with Microsoft CDRom on another disk than C: Then
install the service pack.
  2.. Copy boot.ini , which is on C:, in boot.bck .
3.. Install on the same disk TSM client. Customize TSM client with the
same name than the one to restore.
4.. Launch GUI of TSM client and select all C: and restore.
5.. With Edit (wordpad, etc.) open the file boot.ini restored.
6.. Copy at the end of this file the content of boot.bck.
boot.ini contains now two adresses of boot : the one of the restored
system (which doesn't work yet) and the one of the installed system (which
is working).
7.. Then copy two other files from the installed system to the restored
system :
  WINNT/SYSTEM32/HAL.DLL

  WINNT/SYSTEM32/NTOSKRNL

8.. Reboot the server on the restored NT system.
9.. Relaunch GUI of client TSM and ask for a restoration of the registry
base with selecting system object.
10.. Reboot the server on the restored NT system.
11.. Verify that it works fine.
12.. When restore of C: is OK, it's possible to delete NT system on the
other disk. Then modify boot.ini to delete the boot address of the installed
NT system.
13.. Restore the other disks with the GUI TSM client.
I hope it will help !

2002-09-18 Thread Pétur Eyþórsson

Hmm

look at this

ANR7864W (AIX) Unable to write volume file name.

Explanation: The server was attempting to create a file with the indicated
name. The server was able to partially write to the file before running out
of space.

System Action: The server continues processing. The file creation request
fails. The file is still present on the system.

User Response: Specify a new file name where there is sufficient space.

Ok this is what you gotta do.

go to the filesystem /bfaa1dk3 and issue the rm command on the file you
where trying to create.
Then try to reissue the command and try a smaller volume this time just try
like 2 mb size, if it works then you know that the problem is your size, del
the 2mb volume and reissue ther rm command on the 2mb file and try creating
a real vomume next.
be sure you have enugh space for the file on your filesystem.

That should take care of it.

Hope this helps

pete out :-)

Hi Michelle!
Could it be that /bfaa1dk3 is a raw logical volume? If so, don't specify a
filename and specify /dev/rbfaa1dk3.
Just a thought...

Re: TSM 5.1.1 Win2000 server reboot

2002-09-18 Thread Bill Boyer

Adaptec has an updated driver on their site that works great. The default
driver delivered with Win2k has problems with LTO tape. I haven't seen
reboot problems, but severe throughput issues to where I would only get
1-2GB/hour throughput on the tape drives. Updating to the Adaptec drivers
(even though the Tivoli support pages say to use the IBM drivers) has gotten
me to 1+GB/Minute throughput.

Hi Kurt,
I have had a similar problem (maybe the same) with TSM v.

Thanks,

Kurt

Hmm

look at this

Hi,

I'm trying to backup a directory containing several large files, some of the
files are 5GB. When I run dsmc backup /directname/ I doesn't backup any of
the
files in the directory.

If I then try to backup an individual file of 600mb it backups up
successfully.
But if I try to backup a 5GB file it fails.

Have anybody experienced similar problems using tsm on HPUX 11.00

Thanks
Mike

Re: Help for 2108 failure

2002-09-18 Thread Jason Liang

Thanks for all you prompt responses.

I figured out the problem was the /dev/rmtX and element mapping has been
changed since the 2108 right after I sent out my help message.

I re-defined the drives in TSM, then the problem has been solved.

Thanks you gurus, Dan, David, Suad and Mark. You guys are so helpful!

The other possibility is that since the 2108 was replaced, there may
be a small chance the /dev/rmtX mapping no longer matches what the
previously assigned rmtX-to-element ID mapping was.

Which conceivably could produce this sort of error, if TSM and
the library disagreed about what logical/physical drive matched up?

 What I'd suggest is:

 tsm q drive f=d

Then note each rmtX device name and what element ID it corresponds to.
 (in TSM)

Then do some tracing to figure out which element ID each rmtX device
 actually physically corresponds to.

Then you'll soon see if the TSM setup and the probed devices in AIX
 matches or not.

If they don't match, update the TSM drive entries for rmtX and element ID
 ASAP.

Should normally take only about 5-10 minutes of work to figure out the
mapping from scratch. Keep good notes and issue a whole bunch of commands
to assist in the logical-to-physical tracing.

I just finished fixing all this after no end of fun with the 3584 setup
 and mismatched rmtX/element IDs.

Hi Kurt,
I have had a similar problem (maybe the same) with TSM v.

Configuration is now:

Library Compaq MSL5025DLX (2 modules) with 3 SDLT 220 drives.

After the upgrade, many of the processes takes a very long time to complete.
Expiration used to take 10-15 minutes, takes now 1,5 hours. Database backup
used to take about 20 minutes, takes now 1-2 hours, migration is slow,
space-reclamation is very slow, and when they try to stop spacereclamation,
it takes hours before it stops.

I'm sorry I don't have any numbers (MB/s) for these processes. I might have

differences in between version 4 and 5 in the SQL database

2002-09-18 Thread Pétur Eyþórsson

Hello there friends :-)

This has been buggin me the last week.

There have been some changes in the database since it became version 5

I have a script that shows the total amount of data sent over last night.

the output is like this in version 4.x and 3.x

NODE NAME DOMAIN PLATFORM
MBYTES CONECTIONS
-- -- -
--- ---
BAUG_CDB2 REKSTRAR DB2
12360.93 4
FINGRANDI REKSTRAR WinNT
8789.06 3

ok this is what happens when I run the command in version 5.

NODE NAME DOMAIN PLATFORM
MBYTES CONECTIONS
-- -- -
--- ---
URDUR VIDWinNT
1909.65 1
PERLAN VIDWinNT
1446.82 1

there is something wrong with this picture, I have around 40 clients on this
site and they either don't show up
or they show only one connection to the database, when I know that there has
been more connections.

this is the script I am using for this task.

select summary.entity as NODE NAME,
 nodes.domain_name as DOMAIN,
nodes.platform_name as PLATFORM,
 cast((cast(sum(summary.bytes) as float) / 1024 / 1024) as decimal(10,2))
as MBYTES ,
count(*) as CONECTIONS

 from summary ,nodes
where summary.entity=nodes.node_name
and summary.activity='BACKUP'
and start_time current_timestamp - 1 day
group by entity, domain_name, platform_name
order by MBytes desc

here it is again:
select summary.entity as NODE NAME, nodes.domain_name as DOMAIN,
nodes.platform_name as PLATFORM, cast((cast(sum(summary.bytes) as float) /
1024 / 1024) as decimal(10,2)) as MBYTES , count(*) as CONECTIONS from
summary ,nodes where summary.entity=nodes.node_name and
summary.activity='BACKUP' and start_time current_timestamp - 1 day group by
entity, domain_name, platform_name order by MBytes desc

Ok I know there are some great SQL guys out there, like Paul Seay and other

Can someone tell me why I am getting this so wrong?

LAN-free backup goes SAN, LAN, SAN

2002-09-18 Thread Zlatko Krastev/ACIT

Hello all,

If you do not like to read long posts please skip this one - it can be
boring.

I have a very nasty problem at customer site and asking for your help are
we the only having it. If not can we fight it together.
Environment:
Server: v4.2.1.15, Windows 2000 SP2
Client: v4.2.2.1 (was 4.2.1.25), AIX 4.3.3ML09 + patches
Storage Agent: v4.2.1.15, TCP/IP or Shared Memory
SAN: IBM 2108-F16 (Brocade) switch + IBM 3583-L18 (ADIC) LTO with 2 drives
Storage policy: Stgpools use defined volumes and no scratches.
Yes, I know it's very unusual combination (Windows TSM server + AIX
nodes). Even support in the beginning thought it is AIX server w/ Win
client.

The node in question is somewhat mixed - small (50kB) and large (Nx100MB
or 1-4GB) files. So for performance small files are directed to go over
LAN. Large files are bound to direct-to-SAN-tape class and storage agent
should take care of them. DIRMC is pointing diskpool as it ought to.

Now the problem:
1. Client starts backup, sent several directories over LAN, on first file
reported ANS1114I and waits server to mount a volume on behalf of storage
agent (OK)
2. Variable number of files are backed up for less than 1% of the volume
mounted (OK)
3. Client reports another ANS1114I (here is the problem).
Under the covers it seems than client requested this and next several
files to go over LAN instead of LAN-free. So mount is performed by server
for its own use (normal MgSysLAN path).
4. Another bunch of files are backed to second volume. 'Q SES' shows tens
of MBs so files go over LAN.
5. Third ANS1114I is reported and client resumes normal operation
6. Backup completes with no error, everything is backed up but for
enourmous time - test with 3-4 GB went good 20 minutes instead of 5.
The result of this SAN-LAN-SAN sequence is two volumes less than 5%
utilized, 5-minutes backup taking between 20 and 40 minutes and unwanted
data spread. Contents are
VOL1: file set 1, file set 3
VOL2: file set 2
And if accidentally second drive is busy (migration most often) the
process might go to bed in step 3 and wake up one hour later (when drive
becomes available on the end).

Partial workaround:
If DIRMC is set to point the tapes LAN-free works as it ought to and 4.3
GB take 5 minutes including mount time. But backup of 20kB in 5 files is
taking again 5 minutes just because DIRMC required tape mount. This moves
the problem in other area without solving it at all.

Support requested client upgrade from v4.2.1.25 to v4.2.2 with no success.
Upgrade of the storage agent (plus the server and other agents) is
postponed because we want to ensure this problem is resolved before to
introduce new ones in v4.2.2.

As always any hints, advices or similar experience are thankfully welcome.

Hi,

Sorry I couldn't reply any earlier.

I've got some additional info. The server was already at the client since

The server was already rebooting several times a day from the beginning,
I've found this in the event log.

So there is definitely a hardware problem causing the reboots and TSM or the
Adaptec SCSI controller can't be the cause. I'll check the Adaptec driver
version tomorrow.

Subject:LAN-free backup goes SAN, LAN, SAN

Check the mount limit for the device class of the destination your backup is

set it there with

Subject:differences in between version 4 and 5 in the SQL database

Hello there friends :-)

This has been buggin me the last week.

There have been some changes in the database since it became version 5

I have a script that shows the total amount of data sent over last night.

the output is like this in version 4.x and 3.x

NODE NAME DOMAIN PLATFORM
MBYTES CONECTIONS
-- -- -
--- ---
BAUG_CDB2 REKSTRAR DB2
12360.93 4
FINGRANDI REKSTRAR WinNT
8789.06 3

ok this is what happens when I run the command in version 5.

NODE NAME DOMAIN PLATFORM
MBYTES CONECTIONS
-- -- -
--- ---
URDUR VIDWinNT
1909.65 1
PERLAN VIDWinNT
1446.82 1

there is something wrong with this picture, I have around 40 clients on
this
site and they either don't show up
or they show only one connection to the database, when I know that there
has
been more connections.

this is the script I am using for this task.

select summary.entity as NODE NAME,
 nodes.domain_name as DOMAIN,
nodes.platform_name as PLATFORM,
 cast((cast(sum(summary.bytes) as float) / 1024 / 1024) as
decimal(10,2))
as MBYTES ,
count(*) as CONECTIONS

 from summary ,nodes
where summary.entity=nodes.node_name
and summary.activity='BACKUP'
and start_time current_timestamp - 1 day
group by entity, domain_name, platform_name
order by MBytes desc

here it is again:
select summary.entity as NODE NAME, nodes.domain_name as DOMAIN,
nodes.platform_name as PLATFORM, cast((cast(sum(summary.bytes) as float)
/
1024 / 1024) as decimal(10,2)) as MBYTES , count(*) as CONECTIONS from
summary ,nodes where summary.entity=nodes.node_name and
summary.activity='BACKUP' and start_time current_timestamp - 1 day group
by
entity, domain_name, platform_name order by MBytes desc

Ok I know there are some great SQL guys out there, like Paul Seay and
other
SQL gurus.

Can someone tell me why I am getting this so wrong?

The key to finding the code is that PTFs are in the

As an addendum to my prior post on this thread, even though it doesn't say

Subject:LAN-free backup goes SAN, LAN, SAN

Upgrade of the storage agent (plus the server and other agents) is
postponed because we want to ensure this problem is resolved

Re: Backup reporting

2002-09-18 Thread Bill Boyer

There was a problem where the bytes transferred in the summary table as
zero. It has been fixed in later patch levels. I'm not sure what the APAR
number is or the level where it was fixed.

If you need this data, turn on the accounting records. There is an
additional field Amount of backup files, in kilobytes, sent by the client
to the server in addition to the Amount of data, in kilobytes,
communicated between the client node and the server during the session. The
bytes communicated is the total bytes transferred and includes and
re-transmissions/retries. I believe the Amount of backup files, in
kilobytes, sent by the client to the server is just what was sent AND
stored in TSM.

I haven't fully looked into this, but if I'm trying to get a total for the
amount of data backed up I would be using this field as opposed to the bytes
transmitted field. Something for me to add to my Honey-Do list..:-)

You'll find it at:

The key to finding the code is that PTFs are in the
../tivoli-storage-management/maintenance directory structure, and patches
are in the ../tivoli-storage-management/patches directory structure.

As an addendum to my prior post on this thread, even though it doesn't say
so in the README file, IC33316 is also fixed in 4.2.2.8.

I can not say for sure whether this is your problem, but it could be APAR
IC33316. This problem is fixed in patch level 5.1.1.5 (available now), and
will also be available in PTF 4.2.3 (should be available in the
not-too-distant future). Give 5.1.1.5 a shot and see how it goes.

Subject: backup performance with db on the Shark ESS

I posted a message a month ago about performance degradation after
 moving
the db and the log to the Shark ESS. The problem has been resolved with
help from Paul Seay. Here is a recap:

Moved 32G db and 10G log from attached SCSI non-RAID disks to IBM Shark
 ESS.
Kept 2 copies of db and log. I wasn't ready to drop the security
 blanket.
Backup db increased from 40 minutes to 90 minutes.
Reformat the AIX volume group that the db was on from 2 LUNs to 8 LUNs.
Backup db still ran for 90 minutes. The additional LUNs didn't help at
 all.
Dropped the second copy of the db and log.
Backup db now runs for 24 minutes.

Paul told me that there is a fix in 4.2.2.8 for performance of backing
 up
2 copies of the db. I will try setting up a second copy of the db after
 I
upgrade to 5.1 in a few months and see if it makes a difference.
Meanwhile, I am keeping only 1 copy of the db and 2 copies of the log
and depending solely on RAID-5 of the ESS for the integrity of my db.

SSH is a much better way to talk remotely with a unix based machine.
Everything (including your login id and password) is encrypted. Plus the SSH

Re: Backup reporting: SUMMARY TABLE ISSUE IS FOUND

2002-09-18 Thread Seay, Paul

The problem is the summary table is broken right now. I just got off the
phone with Level 2. We think we have identified the cause of the problem.
As it turns out the SUMMARY table records are written by the control
session, not the actual backup sessions. What is happening is the control
sessions are timing out and a new control session is being formed to send
the statistics information. If you look at the start and end timestamps
with the following select and then look at the activity log you will see
what I am talking about. This select lists all sessions that have a byte
count of zero. You will notice the start and end timestamps are usually the
same or only a few seconds apart. The reason is the wrong numbers are being
recorded.

select entity, number, start_time, end_time from summary where bytes=0 and
start_time current_timestamp-5 days and activity = 'BACKUP' order by 1,3

The issue is I can envision this is going to be very difficult to fix in the
current design.

It will be interesting.

Paul and all,

When I attempt to use any of the following select statements my Total MB
returned is always 0. I get my list of nodes but there is never any numbers
for size.

Since this is my first attempt at select statements, I am sure I doing
something wrong. I have tried from command line and through macro's.

I am trying this on a W2K TSM v4.2.2 server.

Thanks,

Re: Backup reporting

2002-09-18 Thread Mr. Lindsay Morris

In developing Servergraph/TSM, we've tried various techniques to see bytes
transferred.
The summary table has been unreliable;
The ANE49xx messages from the client that appear in the activity log have
been unreliable;
but the accounting log HAS been reliable.

One gotcha is that the total bytes field apparently includes overhead.
That is to say, there are six bytes-trasmitted fields in the accounting log
record:
KB backed-up
KB restored
KB archived
KB retrieved
KB HSM-migrated
KB HSM-recalled
and then there's a seventh field, total KB transferred.

The seventh total-bytes field is always MORE than the sum of the first six.
What's the difference?

I'd ask Andy, but we think it's
TSM server sending the metadata down to the client before backup starts,
and/or
files being retransmitted because the client detected that they changed
during backup.

Our current graphs show this quantity over time, averaged across all nodes.
It typically runs 10-40% over time.
Does this really mean that there's 10-40% wasted network traffic?
And could this go down (making a site more efficient) if the site used
Journal-based backup?

There was a problem where the bytes transferred in the summary table as
zero. It has been fixed in later patch levels. I'm not sure what the APAR
number is or the level where it was fixed.

If you need this data, turn on the accounting records. There is an
additional field Amount of backup files, in kilobytes, sent by the client
to the server in addition to the Amount of data, in kilobytes,
communicated between the client node and the server during the
 session. The
bytes communicated is the total bytes transferred and includes and
re-transmissions/retries. I believe the Amount of backup files, in
kilobytes, sent by the client to the server is just what was sent AND
 stored in TSM.

I haven't fully looked into this, but if I'm trying to get a total for the
amount of data backed up I would be using this field as opposed
 to the bytes
transmitted field. Something for me to add to my Honey-Do list..:-)

Client install on Unix (Also running TDP for Oracle)

2002-09-18 Thread Mark Hayden

Question, we just finished installing just the client on a Unix machine running
Solaris 8. We upgraded the client to TSM 5.1 When we did the PKGRM for just the Tivoli
client software, (did not remove the TDP for Oracle) we noticed that we could not
bring the Oracle DB back up. It was looking for a file called libApiDS.so which is
located in the API/BIN directory of the client. So when we removed the TSM software,
we started to get the error. My question, does anyone know why and what this file is
used for Below is the actual error.

Re: Backup reporting

2002-09-18 Thread Rushforth, Tim

The Amount of backup files, in kilobytes, sent by the client to the server
does include client retries (at least at 4.2.0 level). We've just
experienced this when a node that retries a huge file shows sending 19 GB
instead of the normal 8 GB.

Field 17 from the accounting record below shows this (19,350,787).

4,0,ADSM,09/12/2002,01:46:22,COWSVP08,,WinNT,1,Tcp/Ip,1,0,0,0,0,2569,

3584 tape questions

2002-09-18 Thread Dan Foster

I've finally got the new 3584 library up and worked through all hardware
and TSM issues, and just finished with the first round of successful tests.
Looks sharp! Currently tuning the setup (disk, memory, network, TSM, etc).

Environment: AIX 4.3.3 ML10, pSeries 660-6H1, TSM 4.2 (5.1 next week)
to 4.2.2.12, SCSI attachment to host, 3584-L32 and 3584-D32 frames.

Two questions about 3584 tapes --

1. Is it normal for it to take 45 seconds to read/verify the
label on the tape? The tape load itself is pretty quick, but
takes forever-and-an-half to read/verify the label.

2. There's two label sources -- one is the barcode scanner, which
works great and *very* quick, and it seems the other label
source is on the tape somewhere.

Where exactly on the tape is the label preserved, other than the
volser bar code label? Is it in the LTO-CM area of the tape? Or
is it on the first part of the tape, or something?

I'm curious about this because the implications is that if I
do destructive read-write tests with tapes involving overwrite,
I might potentially overwrite the label, and have to relabel it?

The documentation suggests that 'LABEL LIBVOL' for a 3584 would
update label in the LTO-CM area of the tape cartridge, but it
isn't real definite or clear on that point.

More information needed, guy. Why don't you feed us a little more of that
activity log, say about five minutes more of it?

Page 362 of the version 5.1 AIX Administrator's Guide has the answer as to
why it happened in the first place.

Sun UFS Snapshots.

2002-09-18 Thread Steve Harris

Hi All,

I've had a new system dropped on me which has its config driven by the vendor rather
than from the IT end. As such I'm supposed make a backup recommendation.
The product backs up by using UFS functionality available in Solaris 8. This allows
one to issue an fssnap command, which creates a new unix device which you can then
mount and backup.

This example is to backup a snapshot using tar

# mkdir /backups/home.bkup
# mount -F UFS -o ro /dev/fssnap/1 /backups/home.bkup
# cd /backups/home.bkup
# tar cvf /dev/rmt/0 .

This one is to back up the raw device using ufsdump

# ufsdump 0ucf /dev/rmt/0 /dev/rfssnap/1

OK, it looks like we can run a TSM incremental on the block device or an image backup
on the raw device. The filesystem in question will contain an Oracle database so most
things will chage daily anyway.

Has anyone had experiance with this Snap backup functionality? any gotchas? Do you
use the normal incremental backups successfully? what about images?

Thanks
