TSM backup command line

2003-01-08 Thread Bernard Rosenbloom
We have an end-user that accesses the TSM backup client command line on
our TSM INTEL clients (4.2.1.30) and runs the dsmc i command to start
maual backups on servers that failed scheduled backups the previous
night. He is the System Administrator on the INTEL boxes so we can't
prevent him from acessing the TSM command line.
We don't want the want the incremental backup to run. Anybody have any
ideas on what TSM measures we can take prevent the backup from running
or kill the session ?

we're running tsm 4.2 on aix 4.3.3. we run a daily move drmedia but in this
case 3 tapes did not get ejected because they were mounted. however, the
move drmedia command made changes to make it look like they are no longer
in
the database. short of actually opening up the library and removing them
(its a BIG library) how can we either "reintroduce" the tapes and then
eject
them or just eject them?

Yes, just check the tapes out and back in - basically. TSM DB
knows what's on the tapes etc. I assume that your Device
classes will stay the same etc? You will need to check this
and make sure that your storage pool heirarchy is pointing

Consider environmentals among the factors. Winter is particularly bad because
so much dirt is tracked into computer rooms on wet shoes. If the room is not
humidity-controlled, drier conditions and heating can make for more dust in
the air. If your library is in a high-traffic area, you have a lot of cause
for contaminants to move around it, and these boxes are far from sealed.

Re: Sub-File Backup - 1 GB Limit

2003-01-08 Thread Jim Smith
Subfilecachesize could be raised; please submit a requirement and let us
know what types of cache sizes you need. The cache size is not bounded by
the 32-bit differencing image limit.

System objects and subfile processing would be very difficult. I would
suggest pushing a requirement for incremental processing of system files,
which are the files that get resent on every system object backup that are
probably causing the majority of your woes. That would probably
alleviate your problem and be a more applicable solution to other problems
in this area.

Hi Jim

postings from development are always welcome.

Beeing curious I (mis)use your readiness and ask
you prior to opening a requirement:

Are you limited with 32-bit addressing
with SubFileCachesize with its maximum of 1 GB as well,
or would it be simple for you to raise this limit significantly higher?

The business case is ability to backup (almost) whole filesystems
on small file servers over leased lines with limited throughput.

And - any would it be troublesome to apply differencing technology for
system objects backup?
The business case is ability to backup enormous system objects from
servers
with microsoft systems over leased lines with limited throughput.

Re: faulty media

2003-01-08 Thread Tab Trepagnier
Peter,

I have a 3583 rather than a 3584, but over the last 1-1/4 years it's been
in service, the only time we've had a tape failure was when we had a
hardware failure - dead picker (four times), jammed drives (twice), etc.
We have 71 data tapes in our library and we've never seen one just fail.

Our system is running on AIX but in this case that shouldn't make any
difference.

Could you have electrical interference or SCSI termination problems? On
my 3583 and DLT libraries I finally cabled them so that drive data does
not flow through the library controllers - the controller is the last
"real" device on the SCSI chain. That made a world of difference in
reliability.

Good luck.

Recently, we have been experiencing a high number of media errors
(generally read errors with some locate errors) on our 3584 LTO library. A
recent query of the volumes table shows that we have 37 tapes (out of 250)
with read errors! We have had IBM out to inspect the library and drives,
and they report that everything is fine. Is it normal to have this many
errors? Could we have that many bad tapes? The tapes are not rewritten
very often (the data being stored is for a long term and is generally very
static). Has anyone else experienced these kind of media issues?

We are running TSM 4.2.2.13 on Win2K, the library is connected via LVD
SCSI, and all the firmware on the drives are up-to-date.

Thanks in advance.

Is it normal to have this many errors? Could we have that many bad tapes? The tapes
are not rewritten very often (the data being stored is for a long term and is
generally very static). Has anyone else experienced these kind of media issues?

We are running TSM 4.2.2.13 on Win2K, the library is connected via LVD SCSI, and all
the firmware on the drives are up-to-date.

Thanks in advance.

APAR IC34630 may describe your problem. This was supposed to be fixed in
5.1.5.4 (I have not tested yet.) - but 5.1.5.4 was pulled so wait for next
patch.

If this is your problem, you can set the Schedule Service to "Restart the
Service" on first failure (Services, your schedule service, recovery) and it
will restart.

Exactly 50. ;) It's got a built-in counter on the tape, and the IBM
libraries will report this via front panel LCD (at least, on the 3584,
it does). I believe it returns an error if you try to use it a 51st time,
from my recollection of the manual, but don't hold me to that.

Re: 32 bit TSM Client for for AIX5.1

2003-01-08 Thread bbullock
You can install the 32-bit version on AIX5.1 and it will work. I had
to do this recently because the 64-bit client would core dump about every
other day. i.e. it would get part way through the incremental and then
core-dump.

Since I downgraded to the 32-bit version it seems to be more
reliable...(crossing my fingers)

Speaking of problems with the web-admin interface.......

2003-01-08 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU
Recently, we have started to notice lots of problems with client
passwords, after reseting them via the web-admin interface.

This just started when we went to 4.2.3.x (had to install the ".2 patch"
level due to the problems with 4.2.3.0 and node names that contained such
strange, off-the wall characters like "." and "-" ...gee...who would
use such characters ;-) ?

Seems that after reseting the password via web-admin, the user can only
sign in once. Then we get messages about the password being EXPIRED ?

Considering that I don't have any values for the PASSWORD EXPIRATION
PERIOD value, should this be considered a new "bug" or is someone aware of
this problem ?

You don't say what platform - if it's AIX, I can highly recommend 4.2.1.15.
We've been there about 10 months, works great.

I'm not budging from here until there is something more stable available.
My server is running at max capacity with 450 clients, and I can't afford
any of the problems with the later releases.

Hi

This problem is related to a bug in ver 5.1.6 which is to be solved with version 5.1.6.1, which Tivoli support has promised will be out soon.

The problem has todo with a change in the nodes table. Whenever you try to access the nodes table from the Web interface, your server will go down.

So, dont access node information through the web interface...

Burak,

IBM wanted me to upgrade to 5.1.6.0, overlooking this minor fault with the
release. Been bit by this problem 2 too many times so I asked everyone on
the list if they were using it and found this out:

>TSM 5.1.6 selects against the node table or webadmin access to anything
touching the node table will abend dsmserv, dump core with a segmentation
violation.

I'm told there should be a patch out in about a week.

Yes. We had a similar problem when the web admin gui touched the nodes
table (I registered a new node shortly after the upgrade that brought the
server down). Also seemed to happen when a select ran against the nodes
table.

Waiting for fix from Tivoli. Supposedly fixed in 5.1.6.1.

Hi Burak!
You need to send more information. But one idea who pop up in my head was
that. Maybe the logfiles/Databas was out of space?
Do you have a space trigger activeted on the TSM server?

Re: move drmedia but tapes werent ejected

2003-01-08 Thread Seay, Paul
What do you mean, "they are in the inport". The 3494 should put the tapes
away with a category of FF00 and then you just check them in. You should be
able to do a mtlib command to see their status.

I believe you are getting confused with the J on the tape. That is not part
of the serial number. That is the tape type. The serial number should be
the next 6 digits.

i cant quite seem to get this to work

im using a 3494 automated library with the following commands:

checkin libv 3494 j00544 status=private owner=sy00055 devtype=3590.. but
that just waits for it in the inport (messages to insert in actlog)

so i try to search...

checkin libv 3494 search=yes status=private devtype=3590
volrange=j00544,j00544... it returns immediately saying "0 found"

we're running tsm 4.2 on aix 4.3.3. we run a daily move drmedia but in this
case 3 tapes did not get ejected because they were mounted. however, the
move drmedia command made changes to make it look like they are no longer in
the database. short of actually opening up the library and removing them
(its a BIG library) how can we either "reintroduce" the tapes and then eject
them or just eject them?

Thanks for all the responses. Problem has been resolved. As it turns out the
problem was that the drive names in the Tape Paths were inconsistent with
those that
were defined in AIX.

There is an APAR for this Problem:

APAR= IC34020
DEFINE DRIVE AND DEFINE PATH COMMANDS NOT NEEDED WHEN SETTING
UP TSM LIBRARY CLIENT COMMUNICATIONS TO THE TSM LIBRARY MANAGER.

ERROR DESCRIPTION:
When setting up the TSM library client server, TSM Administrator
Guide v5.1 documentation currently states to do the following:
  6. Define the drives in the library.
define drive sangroupdrivea element=1030
define drive sangroupdriveb element=1031
  7. Define the path from the server to each of the drives.

define path astro drivea srctype=server desttype=drive
  library=sangroup device=mt0.1.0.2
define path astro driveb srctype=server desttype=drive
  library=sangroup device=mt0.2.0.2
.
As of TSM 5.1 server, it is no longer required to do the above
steps as part of a TSM library client server install. These
steps can be skipped as part of the TSM library client setup,
and the next step taken (define the device class for the TSM
  library client server).
.
Documentation needs to be updated to reflect the changes in
  TSM library client server setup.

TEMPORARY FIX:
COMMENTS:

2003-01-08 Thread Jolliff, Dale
If this is a Windows node, you might also investigate to see if there is
more than one physical machine using the same node name.

I'm seeing this where a customer had configured three physical machines
(with different versions of windows on each naturally) with the same node
name.

Lucky for us they were diligent about backing each node up at different
times each day. Can't ever have enough copies of all those system dlls you
know.

Hello,

I had the same problem.

The documentation of library sharing in the Administrator Guide is wrong!

These are the right steps:
- Define the server to server communication
- On the library M A N A G E R define the library with shared=yes, define
the drives and define the pathes from the library C L I E N T to the drives
- On the library C L I E N T you have to define the shared library and the
device class only

I have run "tdpoconf showenv" and all looks good. We have slightly
earlier versions of Oracle and TDPO on other AIX machines and it
runs o.k. Just copied RMAN script to this machine and touched up
for this node. Have checked a few things and all looks o.k.

Any suggestions?
Thanks,

Informix 64 bit : how to delete logs ?

2003-01-08 Thread PAC Brion Arnaud
Hi *SM'ers

An old topic to the ones familiar to this list : does anybody have a nice tip for
deleting Informix logs from TSM server ?
My problem is that we're now using 64 bit version of Informix, and that the version of
Expire.c utility we used before doesn't work anymore. Did anyone succeed in modifying
it to have it working for informix 64 bits, or does anybody know another (new ?) way
for getting a rid of those logs ?
Thanks in advance.

Arnaud

Re: HELP: MVS TSM Server Hanging on Boot

2003-01-08 Thread Christo Heuer
Hi Mark,

I had a problem like this a few months back - waited about an
hour for the server to start up properly - got to exactly the
same place yours came - after I halted it a 2nd time it came up
relatively quickly - about 20 minutes - I think the fact that
you have an 11Gig recovery log volume will contribute quite a
lot to the time it takes.
We have a 6gig rcvry log and once the log gets full it takes
quite long as I've stated.
The next time it happens the best to do is NOT to halt your
server but to keep it going - all client transactions will
fail because the recvry log is full - but that is fine - then
you just start a database backup from the MVS/TSO console and
wait for it to complete. There is an undocumented command
'ckpt force' - which normally clears up the log in critical
situations like this...

Cheers

This morning we noticed our TSM recovery log was ~97-100% full.
The server was still up but we couldn't log in. We halted the server,
increased the recovery log, and are trying to bring the server back up.

The problem is the server is stuck in Recovery log undo pass in progress.

Antwort: Re: 3494 Library Sharing

2003-01-08 Thread Mario Strehlow

Use only the very latest patch-level of the Mac client, anything older is
buggy
Configuration of the client and the scheduler client is as simple as it is
on windows, it is a bit different. Unfortunately, the client scheduler only
works when a user with admin rights is logged in on the system.

Re: Windows 2000 Terminal Server

2003-01-08 Thread Loon, E.J. van - SPLXM
Hi Thomas!
Thank you VERY much!
So I guess a standard scheduled incremental should be enough, since a SYSTEM
STATE backup is done by default at the beginning of an incremental backup.

Subject: AW: Windows 2000 Terminal Server

Hi Eric,

I couldn't find any info in the TSM docu - but the W2K TS licence database
seems to be a part of the SYSTEM STATE - according to Legato's networker
docu ;-)

"Terminal Services Licensing
Terminal Services provides access toWindows 2000 applications running on a
server host. TSL is the client license management service for Terminal
Services
Windows 2000 Server edition. TSL can be installed on a Windows 2000 host to
catalog and enforce license policy for Terminal Services clients.

Backing Up TSL Data
It is recommended that you back up your licensing data regularly, and
especially when you know that the TSL database has changed, such as when a
customer purchases a license or when the database has been moved from its
default installation location.
TSL is a component of the SYSTEM DB save set. To back up TSL, you must
back up the SYSTEM DB save set and the directory in which the license server
is installed. This ensures that data in both the registry and the license
server
database is saved.
To help protect your licensing data from accidental loss in case your
computer
has a hardware or storage failure, you should also back up the SYSTEM STATE
save set so that the registry is backed up. If the TSL database changes and
the
SYSTEM STATE is not backed up before the next SYSTEM STATE and SYSTEM
DB save set recovery, you must edit the Windows 2000 registry to reflect the
TSL changes that were never backed up (as part of the SYSTEM STATE).
It is also best to back up the SYSTEM FILES save set whenever you back up
the
other SYSTEM save sets."

Hope this helps

Kind regards and a happy new year

Betreff: Windows 2000 Terminal Server

Hi *SM-ers!
I'm asked to backup a Windows 2000 Terminal Server. I found that this is
supported by TSM 4.2 and higher, but my customer would like to know whether
TSM can also backup and restore the license database.
I cannot find any information on how to backup a Windows 2000 Terminal
Server database.
Maybe there is somebody out there with experience in this field?
What do I have to do extra to backup and restore this database?
Thanks in advance for any reply!!!

-password=client
