MAGSTAR tapes

2003-02-11 Thread Ubhaykar, Nitin
Hi TSMers,

We need to send some tapes (3590E) offsite, outside the country, and there is a good
possibility that the tapes will undergo X-ray checks while en-route. Can anybody
advice whether we can take any precautions to safeguard against accidental damage of
the tapes ?

Any help would be highly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Re: select command

2003-02-11 Thread PAC Brion Arnaud
Hi Mr Chandrasekhar,

You could probably use something like :

Select blah ... where cast((scheduled_start-current_timestamp)hours as
decimal) 24
In this case you can replace hours by minutes or even seconds
or select blah ... where dayname(scheduled_start) ='Tuesday'

Hope it helped !

Re: update default backup copy group

2003-02-11 Thread John Naylor
Joni,
Changing the serialization of the backup copy group will have no impact to
current backup data.
Your backups may go slightly faster if you have had a lot of retries before.
Be aware of two things though.
1) There may still be certain files which cannot be opened for backup.
2) Depends on the data whether dynamic is a suitable serialization.
It is no good presenting the users with a backup if it is not usable on a
restore, so you/they need to test.

Hi Everyone!

I have a request from users to change the management of their data to
backup open closed files, which would be dynamic for the copy
serialization parameter of the backup copy group. I want to change this
parameter for the default backup copy group. I have looked in the book to
see what this will change, but it doesn't really say much. If I change the
copy serialization, will it do anything to current data? From my point of
view, as soon as I make this change all future backups will backup all
files on the server (whether the file is open or not). Is this a correct
assumption? Thank you!!!

Hi
I believe Paul is right, but if you want to check for data in copypool, and
not in primary pool, do a restore stgpool primarypool preview=yes. It
should tell you if there are data in the copypool which are not in

restore of the primary pool (if you want to do it -preview=no).
Just my 2 cents...

I think any aggregates that have deleted files in them are still counted as
whole. So, if reclamation ever runs against the primary and any copy pools
it is highly likely some aggregates in one pool would be reclaimed and in
others they may not. The other possibility is you have more than one
primary pool which has had a backup stgpool command to the copy pool.

Could anybody explain me how it is possible that following query : select

stgpool_name shows me copy-pools occupation bigger than primary pools ? I
first thought it could be related to space reclamation process, but when I

Re: Firmware upgrade question

2003-02-11 Thread Seay, Paul
None of these. Install the latest one (D0IF_295) that fixes some nasty
problems especially if you are using ES-1000s. D0IF_26E regresses a fix
that the previous firware had for ES-1000s. There are also a lot fixes
related to bad tapes. There is a change to improve cleaning cycle needs and
to FINALLY handle the LOCATING error when a tape is damaged on the
beginning, especially new ones. We are putting this on in a few days. It
is the generally available release to a patch level we needed to reintroduce
the fix for ES-1000s.

Many thanks for your precious help and explanations. What I was triying
to achieve was to build a query that would give me an idea of the

subtracting copy_pool occupancy from primary_pool occupancy, but
apparently I can't do it that way :-(

Re: summary-table

2003-02-11 Thread Seay, Paul
This is why it took soo long for them to actually figure out what the
problem was. As it turns out, if the session did not exceed the coded
server timeout the problem did not show up on any release of the client or
the server. It is when it went over. In order to fix the problem, the
client and the server both must be updated if any of your sessions run over
the session timeout.

It's stuff like this that makes my shake my head in disbelief...

The summary table was working fine will ALL my clients, regardless of
version, when the server was 4.1.5. After upgrading ONLY the server
to 5.1.5. the byte counts in the summary table are Zeroes.

When I called support on this they originally told me I had to upgrade my
clients to fix it. Once I got a SQL statement that would show the TSM
version and amount backed up from Paul, I discovered that they had to be
full of it with their suggestion. What I discovered was that not only were
some versions coming back with data, other nodes with the same version were
coming back with zero's. To throw things off even further even other nodes
with the same version did not even show up on the list.

I too did not have a problem till I upgraded my server, at last count that
was ONE computer. So how is it that I now have to upgrade ALL 160+clients,
+1 server to fix it?

X-rays affect film, not magnetic media. The only possible area of

the the Admin Ref manual describes what to do, in the explanation of

Another point to consider...

If they are going by air, they will get very cold. At their destination
they may be subject to high levels of condensation, so ensure that they
acclimatise (at least 4 hours?)in a sealed container if possible and don't
put them into a tape drive until they are at room temperature.

Re: how to expire only version?

2003-02-11 Thread Karel Bos
I think that the only version = 60 means the last deleted version = 60.
Active versions will not be expired. Only inactive ones. So make the only
version inactive (exclude it from the back-up / delete it from the client).
Next back-up the version will be marked inactive and it will over time be
expired.

Re: journal errors - return code 121 \\.\pipe\jnl

2003-02-11 Thread Pete Tanenhaus
This error occurs when the journal daemon process attempts to send a
response on a named pipe provided by
a backup client process and the pipe no longer exists or isn't valid.

This can happen if the backup process/session ends or closes the pipe
before the journal daemon
sends or is finished sending the response or in some cases when the journal
daemon is shutting down and
cleaning up resources.

By itself the error is innocuous but I understand it is annoying to see
error messages in the log which can't
be explained.

Hope this helps

Re: ANS1076E *** Directory path not found ***

2003-02-11 Thread Sal Mangiapane
Hi all, I4m having some troubles with tsm in directory name level. I have
two directories to backup in TSM. Both, have a blank space in the middle of
 the name like: c:\Tomcat 4.1\
 I4ve put on Scheduler c:\Tomcat*4.1\ c:\Tomcat?4.1\ quotes like c:\Tomcat
4.1\ and tried c:\Tomcat 4.1\ and some other combinations like %20
alt+255 and others... Anyone here had a similar experience ?
How did you solve it ? It may be in Scheduler not in dsmc or Baclient GUI...

If you're talking about Define Schedule, client type, in the server,
the the Admin Ref manual describes what to do, in the explanation of
the Objects operand: enclose each path spec in double quotes, and the
set of path specs in single quotes.

   Richard Sims, BU

Also, did you restart the scheduler after each change in the include-exclude? I've
seen this make a difference.

Hello advance:
Thanks for your replaied.
If the client node must backup as /tmp directory, but file's name have
changed every seconds. Can't the TSM backup file expire?
could you give me a hand?

Thanks
Tony W

I think that the only version = 60 means the last deleted version = 60.
Active versions will not be expired. Only inactive ones. So make the
only version inactive (exclude it from the back-up / delete it from the
client). Next back-up the version will be marked inactive and it will
 over time be expired.

Re: journal errors - return code 121 \\.\pipe\jnl

2003-02-11 Thread Pete Tanenhaus
Np errors in the backup client errorlog indicate the opposite condition,
that is the backup client
is trying to read a response sent from the journal daemon which isn't
available at the moment
the read is being done.

This error can happen if the journal daemon ends (obviously a problem) or
(I believe) if the
response the backup client is looking for from the journal daemon is still
in progress, meaning
that the journal daemon hasn't finished processing/sending it.

In most cases the response is ready when the backup client goes to read it,
but if it isn't
the backup client will keep trying to read the response until it either
arrives or a timeout occurs
(don't know the exact wait time of the top of my head).

That being said, I think development (myself) needs to look at the np
error logging on both sides
and try to eliminate logging messages which aren't really errors, but in
some situations it's difficult
to determine if an error condition is legitimate and should be logged or if
it is innocuous and can be ignored.

Hope this helps ..

ANR1425W Scratch volume VOL109 is empty but will not be

You may have DRM procedures, or have done a Move Media, to
manage the volume in a special way. Your site procedures should
prescribe the manner in which the volume returns to the library,
and your Activity Log should obviously show how it was put into
its current state.

2003-02-11 Thread PAC Brion Arnaud
Hi Umesh,

Taken from TSM help :

ANR1425W Scratch volume volume name is empty but will not be deleted -
volume state is mountablenotinlib.
Explanation: The named scratch volume is empty but will not be deleted
at
this time because the state of the volume is MOUNTABLENOTINLIB.
System Action: The volume is not deleted.
User Response: When the volume is moved by MOVE MEDIA
WHERESTATE=MOUNTABLENOTINLIB, the scratch empty volume is deleted.

Give a try to move media ! (If in doubt about syntax, issue h move
media in TSM command line)
Hope it helped !

Tony,

Are you talking about Retain Only Version that is in the
copygroup setting?

You can change that by issuing:
update copygroup domain name policy set name class name
RETOnly=# this is days

I think that you can skip this step. I always activate the
policy when I make changes in the policy or copygroup. This
burned me one before.
activate policy set domain name policy set name

Then issue your expire inventory command.

Re: LTO 3583 drive problem.

2003-02-11 Thread Jozef Zatko
Hi,
I have exactly the same problem except that I have TSM server on AIX 5.1.
It is very strange, because it happens randomly always during unmounting
the tape.
It is always the same drive - /dev/rmt0.
Tape remains in the drive. I can unload tape using operator panel without
any problem. But if I want to use tapeutil utility I get following error
when I try to open device /dev/rmt0

Operation failed with errno 79: Connection refused

I have to reset SAN Data Gateway and then the drive is again accesible with
tapeutil and also from TSM server.

Does somebody know, what does error message : Operation failed with errno
79: Connection refused
mean? Where I can find information about this error number. I was looking
in Atape driver doc but there is no mention about this message.
In output from errpt there is no error from fibre adapter nor from tape
drive.

Here is copy of Event log from SAN DAta Gateway:

Does somebody know, what does error message : Operation failed with errno
79: Connection refused
mean? Where I can find information about this error number. ...

Know thy operating system. errno is the Unix standard error number, as
enumerated in header file /usr/include/sys/errno.h and described in the
operating system documentation. From my AIX notes:

ECONNREFUSED79 Connection refused.
No connection could be made because the target machine
actively refused it. (That system is up, and its TCP/IP
is operating, but not the service.) This usually results
from trying to connect to a service that is inactive on
the foreign host.

Just try to checkout the volumes out of the library with option force=yes.
Then audit the library and checkin as scratch.

I did this on my Library too.

Re: journal errors - return code 121 \\.\pipe\jnl

2003-02-11 Thread Magura, Curtis
Pete, think you said it all with the statement below! Very confusing in the
current state to decide if there is a problem or not.

That being said, I think development (myself) needs to look at the np
error logging on both sides and try to eliminate logging messages which
aren't really errors, but in some situations it's difficult to determine if
an error condition is legitimate and should be logged or if it is innocuous
and can be ignored.

Hope this helps ..

archive failure

2003-02-11 Thread Gill, Geoffrey L.
Someone here has gone off and created their own cmd file that TSM launches
to do an archive. I can't seem to find anything in the help file on these
variables. Maybe someone more familiar with variables can please tell me if
this will work. From what I can tell looking at the return codes it looks
like it is saying it found nothing to backup and reports a failure.

I'm told if they run this cmd file manually from the server it works. Why
then would TSM have a problem with it when all it's doing is calling the
same file?

2003-02-11 Thread Andrew Raibeck
If you are referring to the ARCHIVE_DIR and ARCHIVE_INCLUDES variables,
you won't find anything in the TSM doc about these. These are arbitrary
environment variables created by your user.

After the environment variables were created, was the scheduler restarted
so that it would pick them up? Also, have you confirmed that these are
indeed system (and not user) variables? If they are user variables, then
unless the scheduler is using the same account, the scheduler's
environment won't have these defined.

If none of the above addresses the issue, then you can modify the script
to include some diagnostics. My suggestion:

   @echo off
   set diagfile=c:\diagfile.txt

   REM *** Confirm environment variables
   echo *** ENVIRONMENT VARIABLES *** %diagfile%
   set %diagfile%

   REM *** Confirm current directory
   echo *** CURRENT DIRECTORY *** %diagfile%
   cd %diagfile%

   cd /d %ARCHIVE_DIR%

   REM *** Confirm current directory
   echo *** TSM DIRECTORY *** %diagfile%
   cd %diagfile%

   REM *** Run the archive
echo *** RUNNING ARCHIVE COMMAND NOW *** %diagfile%
   dsmc archive %ARCHIVE_INCLUDES% -subdir=yes -archmc=month-mgt
%diagfile% 21
   set tsmrc=%errorlevel%
   echo *** ARCHIVE COMPLETE RC = %tsmrc% *** %diagfile%

Let the scheduler run the command, then check c:\diagfile.txt to see what
it shows.

The only dumb question is the one that goes unasked.
The command line is your friend.
Good enough is the enemy of excellence.

Someone here has gone off and created their own cmd file that TSM launches
to do an archive. I can't seem to find anything in the help file on these
variables. Maybe someone more familiar with variables can please tell me
if
this will work. From what I can tell looking at the return codes it looks
like it is saying it found nothing to backup and reports a failure.

I'm told if they run this cmd file manually from the server it works. Why
then would TSM have a problem with it when all it's doing is calling the
same file?

Mark,

Thanks for the reply. I was talking with the DBA for the client in question.
It looks like he requires 130gb and the diskpool's estimated capacity in
MB's is 107668.0
It sounds like we are going to have to buy more disk.

Tommy, the following must be true for the situation in question:
 1. the disk storage pool in question has CACHE turned on
 2. COMPRESSION=YES is in effect for the client in question
 3. COMPRESSALWAYS=NO is NOT in effect for the client in question
 4. the file being backed up at the time of the error was growing as a
result
 of compression

The reason it is happening is because the above are all in effect and is
explained by the following partial description of the backup process:
 1. when a file is to be backed up by the client, it provides the server
with
an estimate of the amount of space required to store the file
 2. when, because of compression, a file grows during the backup, the
client
revises its estimate with the server and, when COMPRESSALWAYS=YES (the
default) is in effect, continues sending the file, still compressing it
 3. when CACHE is turned on for the storage pool in question, the server
does not check the CACHEd file space for room based on the revised
estimate (even though it does so at the beginning - in step 1 above)
 4. if the server does not find actual free space (not including cached
file space that COULD be freed to make room to store the file), the server
responds as indicated in your problem situation.

There are lots of ways to solve this problem, including using
COMPRESSALWAYS=NO or turning off COMPRESSION altogether (e.g.,
COMPRESSION=NO), or (just for the file in question) using (if supported by
 the client platform/level) exclude.compression.

You can also turn off caching for the storage pool in question - does it
actually provide you any real benefit, anyway?

 Mark

Re: journal errors - return code 121 \\.\pipe\jnl

2003-02-11 Thread Pete Tanenhaus
I understand the concern, the point I was trying to make was that in some
cases it's difficult to determine
if particular return codes merit something being written to the errorlog.

In the case of a named pipe error (on either the journal daemon or the
backup client) it isn't easy to
determine if the error occurs because the other process has terminated (or
timed out) either normally or abnormally.

All that having been said, the error messages in question really provide
diagnostic information that
probably isn't all that useful to the end user and is really is only useful
to development or support
when attempting to track down problems in the field.

So I agree that the messages should either be more meaningful or shouldn't
be in the errorlog
at all (probably more appropriate for the client tracing facility).

By the way, I tracked down the specific message in this thread ( return
code 121 \\.\pipe\jnl).

There are two types of named pipes used to communicate between the two
processes (journal daemin and b/a client).

One named pipe (\\.\pipe\jnl) name is created by the journal daemon during
startup and is used to receive inbound requests from
the b/a client.

The b/a client determines if the journal daemon is running by attempting to
connect to this pipe.

Return code 121 indicates that the b/a client timed out attempting to
connect to the pipe, which most likely means
that the journal daemon isn't running.

I think a more accurate message in the errorlog would be something like
Connection to Journal Daemon timed out
(and the specific return code could be documented with tracing on).

The other type(s) of named pipes are created by the b/a client and used to
receive responses from the journal daemon.

There is at least one response pipe created by the b/a client for each
backup session (and with multi-threaded backup
possible more since there can be multiple backup sessions).

Any request sent to the journal daemon which requires a response includes
this response pipe name.

When the journal daemon processes the response, it connects to the supplied
response pipe and sends response
data on it as needed.

The b/a client backup session waits for data to arrive on the response pipe
and the reads it.

An example of this would be a request from the b/a client to query all of
the objects in the journal for a particular file system.

The b/a client creates a pipe for the journal daemon to send the list of
matching objects on, and supplies the name of this
pipe to the journal daemon in the query request.

The journal daemon processes the query request, connects to the supplied
pipe, performs the query, and sends the responses
on the pipe..

The b/a client expects to look (peeks) at the request pipe to determine if
there is any response data to read and continues
to read until it is empty.

Usually data will be available on the response pipe as soon as the b/a
client requests it, but in some cases (as with very
long running queries) the journal daemon doesn't post the data on the
response pipe in time and the b/a client must continue
to look (peek) at the pipe until it arrives.

I believe the above condition is the source of the NpPeek: No data
message in the errorlog.

Since the b/a client will eventually timeout the session if the data isn't
received on the response pipe in
a reasonable amount of time, I don't see any use of logging the above
message, so I will remove it in a future release/ptf.

Anyway, I hope this helps .

This will list the volumes that nodename/filespacename is on in storage pool

ITSM For Mail - Domino problems

2003-02-11 Thread Guillaume Gilbert
Hi All

First off :

TSM Server 5.1.5.4 on solaris
TSM Client on Windows 2000 5.1.5.9
ITSM for mail 5.1.5.0

I installed tsm client and Mail client and everything went fine. Registered both the
OS client and the Mail client. When I run domdsmc q adsmserv I get a response from
my tsm server. when I run domdsmc q domino, thew command just hangs there and I get no
response. When I first run the command I get a C++ error (don't have it in front of
me and do not have access to it at the moment). There are no errors in any .log file
and in the event log.

Any help would be appreciated

Thanks

Re: ITSM For Mail - Domino problems

2003-02-11 Thread Greg Redell
I had this same problem it turned out to be McAfee Groupshield keeping TDP
from connecting to Domino.

We are using Groupshield 5.2 and we had to add DOMDSMC and DOMDSM to the
application exclusion list in the server settings database for Groupshield

q stg shows pct util 100%

2003-02-11 Thread vivek jain
Hi All,

Problem is like this,I dont know whether it is a
problem or a bug, specially when TSM installed on
solaris machine,library is 3583.
Problem 1)
I have one node register in one tsm server and its
data is in two volume, T00032 and T00044.
but, when I did q vol, it shows est. capacity(MB) 0.0
and pct util 0.0 and volume status as filling.

When I do q content T00032, output show there is a
data in the volume.

Problem 2)
when I do q stg, it shows (Tapepool)est.
capacity(MB) 0.0 and pct util 100

q devc 3583 f=d
shows:
Est/Max Max Capacity(MB): (Blank)

So, my problem is to know the total stgpool
capacity, and pct util in the volume.

Backup is going well, client schedule is completed
daily, that means backup is there in the two volume.

Can anyone give solution.

Thanks,
Viv

Missing files

2003-02-11 Thread Fred Johanson
I have a client with a missing files problem.

Around midnight Jan 25/26, TSM did an incremental on a WinNT box. All three
file systems show as completed in q fi f=d. Some time thereafter, but
before 1/28, the harddrive went south. On 1/29 directories from c$ were
restored on a new machine. Thousands of ifles are missing.

Where did they go? Select on ll_name for the appropriate hl_name and
node_name from backups finds nothing. Select on hl_name for the appropriate
ll_name and node_name from backups finds nothing. Combine these queries with
the completed backup from 1/26 and what can we believe but that the files were
not there to backup. Moreover, the sysadmin says there were file-shares on
another machine(s), which have yet to be identified.

However, the owner says the missing files were on his harddrive before and
after the last sucessful backup. As he is adamant that the missing files
cannot be on a share somewhere, I have suggested that his hardware problem
crept up on him, making the directory gradually and increasingly unreliable
during backup. I know this is clutching at straws, but in almost a decade,
this is the first instance of missing files.

Can anyone suggest a better explanation, or ste of possible explanations, than
I have offered?

Re: LTO 3583 drive problem.

2003-02-11 Thread David Longo
I have seen some messages here recently about 3583 drive errors.
I have a 3584 with (8) Fibre drives going through McData switches.
with TSM Server 4.2.2.10 on AIX 4.3.3 ML 10 and Atape sdriver
7.1.1.0. 3584 library code 2460 and drive code 25D4.
Have had 3584 about a year. Have had intermittant
errors maybe 2-3 times a month, but noticed that were only
happening on DRIVE1 which has control path. Moved Control
path to DRIVE5 and sure enough the errors were then happening
on that drive.

Working with our IBM CE on this for several months, IBM Tucson
initially was saying that the errors we were getting were media errors.
But I could reuse tha same tape and it would have no more problems.
On some instances, the tape would not be dismounted from drive
but have to have drive reset for eject.

Finally in late December my IBM CE called and said that IBM Tucson
had seen this problem all over and it was happeing on the Fibre Drives, the drive that
the Control Path was on and going through either IBM
2109 or McData switches. These were the common factors. IBM is
working on a code fix (I assume for drives and/or library).

I suspect problem could be happening on 3583 also.

Hi,
I have exactly the same problem except that I have TSM server on AIX 5.1.

Hi,

I have installed TSM 5.1.6 Server on W2k, and after configuring the
library and the drives and after checking in some tapes succesfully,
Submitting an audit library command I keep getting this error:

api and backupset

2003-02-11 Thread Meng Zhang
hello everyone!

I'm using TSM API to write a program, but after I make a
backupset(the files in TSM was archived by using APIs and
the backupset was generated by using TSM server command
gene backupset), I found it can not be restored by TSM
Client.

And I found TSM client help '57' said:
Note: There is no support in the API for the backup set format. Therefore, backup
set data that was backed up via the API cannot be restored or used.

Is it means that I CAN NOT USE BACKUPSET function in my application?

Can anyone enlight me?
