Another way to look at it can be Veritas vs TSM at Veritas web site. It
might not be the right approach, only a way to see the differences two
ways...

My guess is that you automatically allocate new db volumes as the db
grows, the biggest volume was created last, and was never filled, there
was never any need foor all of those pages

I also guess all of these volumes were on one disk, as TSM tries to
allocate new pages in an RR fashion, this is a big performance hit.

> Also, is there anyway to see if indeed the database is fragmented?

Fragmentation is not regularly an issue on a database... IN my
experience, fragmentation is just something we'll have to accept and
well, take into account when tuning a system. It cannot be helped and
ehhh, we don't like to go of-line a day/week just to unload+load db

Re: TSM 5.1.6.2 and AIX client 5.1.1.0

2003-03-05 Thread Andrew Raibeck
There is not enough information here to make a thorough diagnosis, but it
is likely that the ANR8216W messages are a result of the ANS1074I
messages, not the cause.

One problem I am aware of at this level of the client (5.1.1.0, if I
understand correctly) is IC34996. For AIX, this is fixed in patch level
5.1.5.11. You might try applying that patch to one or two machines that
consistently see this problem to see if that resolves it.

The server side sees error "ANR8216W Error sending data on socket nnn.
Reason 32." The client gets "ANS1074W ***User Abort***" in the
dsmerror.log. TSM server is running on AIX 5.1 in 64 bit mode. The
problems are happening every night and started with the TSM upgrade.
I've opened a PMR but am still trying to find out if anyone else has
already solved this problem.

Can I revert from TSM 5.1.6.2 back to 5.1.1.6 without doing a data base
restore?

progressive backup vs. full + incremental

2003-03-05 Thread Joni Moyer
Hello everyone!

I was wondering why the full + incremental would result in a longer restore
time than the progressive backup methodology? From several co-workers
point of view they thought that it would be quicker on the full +
incremental because you wouldn't have to go back to the beginning backups
of the file and restore all of the incrementals, you would just go back to
the most recent full backup and apply the incrementals after that point.
When I went to explain the reasoning behind this, I had some problems
understanding the concept myself, so I was hoping someone could explain
both methods and why they differ in restore time and why progressive is
better than the full + incremental. Thank you so much for any help you can

Wagner,

The Domino server has a hold on this database. It is not
allowing Data Protection for Domino to open it.
Try opening it with a Notes Client to see if you get the same error.
If that doesn't help, try rebooting your Domino Server.
If that doesn't clear it, call Lotus support.

Re: progressive backup vs. full + incremental

2003-03-05 Thread Cook, Dwight E
Old style Full+Incr (as it was some 15-20 years ago...)
Say you run weekend full with weekday incrementals.
Say on Friday, your environment goes down
You restore from your weekend full
You restore from your Mon incr (all the data on the tapes)
You restore from your Tue incr (all the data on the tapes)
You restore from your Wed incr (all the data on the tapes)
You restore from your Thu incr (all the data on the tapes)
You restore from your Fri Incr (if it had already run, all the data
on the tapes)
Now, if 75% of the data on the system changes daily, you just restored
475%...
So if the environment has 1 TB of data, you just restored 4.75 TB's
to get it back...

The other method, (TSM's incremental forever) you simply restore the 1 TB
and you are done...
That is, TSM tracks all the data thus there is no need to lay down all those
incrementals that you won't use anyway.

The difference between the old way and the new way is simply the data base
to track all the information.

and remember, you really aren't going back to the very first backup with the
new way...
you are simply going back to ONLY THE DATA YOU NEED!
Tapes hold a LOT of data that can be accessed very fast (as compared to 20
years ago)
Current day tapes, drives, & ATL's can almost be viewed as old dasd when you
look at the capacities & access times.
So in our new way you just keep all the data out there ~somewhere~ and
simply ask for what you need when you need it.

Dwight

Re: progressive backup vs. full + incremental

2003-03-05 Thread Gianluca Mariani1
Progressive incremental backs up only new or changed files. during the
initial backup the client backs up all eligible files of course(full
backup). Subsequently, files are backed up again only if they are new or
have changed since the last backup. In TSMs case, a pointer to each version
of every file for every client is kept in the database , so there is no
need for another full backup.
When you need to restore, you can choose the specific version of the file
or point-in-time to restore, and TSM will restore only that particular
file or files. The approach used for full + incremental backups (NetBackup)
requires an initial full backup, followed by regular incremental or
differential backups (usually once a day), with the complete cycle needing
a full backup to be repeated on a regular (usually weekly) basis. This
backup method results in redundant weekly full backups of files that have
not changed, wasting both network and media resources. The multi-step
restore process in this approach requires the software to restore the last
full backup, then to restore incremental or differential backups on top
of that in order to recover the latest version of a file or an entire
system. This methodology not only involves restoring more data, it also
means more tape mounts and tape positioning and consumes more network
bandwidth all of which amounts to having longer restore times.

Thank you so much for any help you can
lend on this matter!

You restore from your Tue incr (all the data on the tapes)
You restore from your Wed incr (all the data on the tapes)

So if the environment has 1 TB of data, you just restored 4.75 TB's

But there are smarter ways of restoring from full/incrementals, like
the way FDR does it in the MVS world.
Restoring a full volume from full/incrementals, it starts with the
LAST incremental and restores the volume table of contents
(equivalent to a directory) and all the files on the incremental.
Then it works backwards with each incremental and then the full. For
each backup, if the file is in the VTOC restored from the latest
backup, and it has not yet been restored, it restores it. If it's
not in the latest VTOC (meaning it was deleted after the backup), or
it's already been restored from a later backup, it doesn't get
restored. So at the end of the process, you have your volume
restored to the condition it was in at the latest incremental backup,
and no files have been restored repetitively or unnecessarily.

I my configuration everything work OK if I use LAN, but for SAN you must

Re: Exchange IS errors

2003-03-05 Thread Del Hoobler
Mal,

RC=425 means there was an Exchange error.
ACN5350E means there was an unknown Exchange API error.
An "unknown Exchange API error" means that the
Exchange server encountered a situation that
it did not expect, and so it failed the API call.
To properly diagnose this problem, a trace will
need to be obtained and examined by the support team.
The trace will contain the specific error code
and API that failed.

You can always try rebooting the machine first, to see if
the problem persists. If it does, then please
call IBM support.

Thanks,

2003-03-05 Thread Ford, Phillip
I have an open problem with TSM on this very subject. Their first incline
is to make sure service pack 4 is installed on exchange. On ours it is/was.
So that is not the fix. I will post if I find out anything. We feel that
it may be size related. We have too such clients. One small and working.
The large one was growing. Suddenly about a week ago it stopped working.

Re: Exchange IS errors

2003-03-05 Thread Ochs, Duane
Is this exchange 5.5 ? And trying a full backup ? If so, the only way I have
found to correct it is to reboot the exchange system. I have not found a
reason yet, but I believe it is a low level inconsistency in the exchange
DB, once rebooted the consistency checker seems to fix it.

Take a look in the event viewer for any ESE97 messages and find the return
codes listed. EVENT 102 and 104, with a return code of (1884). Make a note
of them and place a call with IBM. I have been seeing this for sometime. I
was sent a test backup program from ITSM support but I have not had a
failure since receiving it.

My exchange group claims there is no corruption and the TSM software is at
fault. I have seen the exact same error on Exchange 5.5 sp2 and 3, on NT 4.0
sp 4 through 6a and the same exchange combinations on W2K sp2. Also using
the TDP for exchange 1.1.1.0 and 2.2. Out of the 23 exchange servers, almost
all have had this at least once. And the busiest systems have had multiple
occurrences.

Port 1581 allows a remote web browser to connect to the TSM client; if
you're seeing the console, it's working.

To get the client to talk to the server, port 1500 must be open between
the TSM client and the TSM server.

Re: progressive backup vs. full + incremental

2003-03-05 Thread William Rosette
This progressive incremental confuses me. This is what I thought was going
on:

1. Differential is all changes from last FULL backup.
2. Incremental is all changes from last ANY backup
3. Full is all files not matter change on backup.

We used to do Differential with Weekend Fulls. During a restore we would
restore Full if file had not changed, and then the last differential for
the other files that changed. We never restored more than necessary. It
depended on the restore. Restore 1 file was the same on Differential as
Incremental (most current or before corruption). The problem comes when
you are restoring directories or a whole system as in DR. In the
Differential Weekend Full world you would restore Full and lay on top the
last Differential and your done. Always 2 restores was all and restores
flew since data was all together.

Now the TSM world has its own database with its own reclamation,
expiration, migration, collocation, and the works. Come restoring 1 file it
is the same as above. Come restoring directories or whole systems it will
depend where all the data is. Our case, if the restore is not far back we
have a quick restore, but the further back we go in date the slower the
restore because of the no-collocation and the data is spread over 100's of
tapes. This seems to be the same as an Incremental that the TSM database
keeps track of every file from every tape.

Thus, the reason we did not use Incrementals before was 1. Restores were
long, 2. No database to keep track of all Incremental tapes, 3.
Differential & Full used less tapes, and 4. money. I am still dealing with
the progressive incremental that progressively eats resources/money. My
suggestion would be for reclamations to reclaim to a collocate status or

Wagner,

The Domino server has a hold on this database. It is not
allowing Data Protection for Domino to open it.
Try opening it with a Notes Client to see if you get the same error.
If that doesn't help, try rebooting your Domino Server.
If that doesn't clear it, call Lotus support.

Re: progressive backup vs. full + incremental

2003-03-05 Thread William SO Ng
All the replies are correct and they are the reasons why incremental
forever is better and need less time to restore. Maybe a real example can
help you. I had more than 8 years in operations and I can say that TSM is
much better. I had the following experience:

Some "great" application developer create files using date as a part of the
file name. Some of these files are vital e.g. price files, but some are
not important, e.g. temp working or log file for trace. The backup job
needs to backup all the files. The disk crash on Friday and we need to
restore the files.

For traditional FULL + INCREMENTAL, I need to restore all these date
specific files which are useless, so it is a waste of time to restore them.
The bad news did not stop here. I found out some of these date specific
files are huge ("smart" developer write everything to log file, so that
they are able to trace if there is problem). The application will delete
these files in a "day-end" job to reclaim the disk space. However, FULL +
INCREMENTAL will restore all these huge temp files. As a result, I ran out
of disk space when I restore the daily incremental. So I had to delete
those temp files, restore the second incremental, delete temp files,
restore the third incremental,... until incremental of Friday morning. The
total time to restore include this manual delete files process that people
often ignore and forget.

For TSM, it will not restore these intrim temp files and only restore the
files I need using point-in-time restore feature. FULL + INCREMENTAL is
not able to do. Therefore, it is much better.

Hope this example can help you to explain and understand why TSM is better.

Thanks & Regards
William

TSM can give very quick restores, but beware fragmentation in uncollocated
tape pools. We had to rebuild a small (350GB) unix server last year that
required upward of 300 tape mounts, and finding a single file in the middle
of each tape. It took days.

Since then I have gotten funding to buy enough tapes for collocation, and

did) and put the include.systemobject CLASSNAME statement in the dsm.opt (so

Anyone some answers to why this is not working?

ANS1030E error msg question

2003-03-05 Thread Spearman, Wayne
Hi All,
We are getting the "ANS1030E System ran out of memory. Process ended" error
on one of our clients. The client admin says this isn't a problem on his
server but it's on the TSM server. I don't think so as I don't see any other
related errors on TSM, other clients backed up ok, and the message details
leads me to believe the problem is on the client. However the message is ANS
which if I understand the naming convention indicates a TSM server error.
Does anyone know for sure where the problem lies? Client or TSM server

ANS1030E System ran out of memory. Process ended.

Explanation: TSM cannot allocate storage for the specified operation.

System Action: TSM cannot complete the requested operation.

User Response: Stop TSM, restart TSM, and retry the operation. If
unsuccessful, close all unneeded applications and retry the operation. For
UNIX systems that support resource limits, you can check if the memory
resource limit is too low by entering the following command: ulimit -a Based
on the resulting data, you can ask the UNIX system root user to increase
resource limits so that it will override the current default. The UNIX
system root user has the authority to increase resource limits.

Thanks,
Wayne Spearman

ANR is server; ANS is client.

Did that client admin take any action as recommended in the message, or did

Hello everyone!

I was wondering why the full + incremental would result in a longer
restore
time than the progressive backup methodology? From several co-workers
point of view they thought that it would be quicker on the full +
incremental because you wouldn't have to go back to the beginning backups
of the file and restore all of the incrementals, you would just go back to
the most recent full backup and apply the incrementals after that point.
When I went to explain the reasoning behind this, I had some problems
understanding the concept myself, so I was hoping someone could explain
both methods and why they differ in restore time and why progressive is
better than the full + incremental. Thank you so much for any help you

We have, as far as I can tell, solved our problem. We had to increase

pending for longer than the missing interrupt time, OS/390 will decide
that the operation failed.

Hi, we found that this RC=425 is related to an NT memory problem, see

Till now, we had to reboot the server !

Thanks,

Re: Errors on 3590 K tapes

2003-03-05 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU
Thats true.

When we installed our first 3590's, we had to greatly increate the MIH
values. Something crazy like 25-minutes is the recommendation.

I would still check into the microcode level, though !

We have, as far as I can tell, solved our problem. We had to increase
the missing interrupt time for the 3590 drives. If an I/O operation is
pending for longer than the missing interrupt time, OS/390 will decide
that the operation failed.

Re: Netware Memory question running the scheduler

2003-03-05 Thread Jim Kirkman
Do it!

Run managedservices webclient schedule. I'd advise upgrading to the 5.1.5.6
client to avoid an potential problem with the client trying to grap an
invalid port, I believe it was an nwipcport error.

Other than that it's been good, helped with the memory release issue a lot.

Netware 6.0 and HSM for TSM

2003-03-05 Thread David le Blanc
Hi TSMers,

What is the best way to approach HSM on Novell Netware 6 (using 4.2 client)

It seems that Tivoli does not supply or support HSM on netware, however
I have seen products on the web for HSM on TSM.

Any recommendations? What is the suitability of Netware's built in
HSM tools?

Cheers.

multiple buses to 3575-L18 on W2K using TotalStorage driver?

2003-03-05 Thread Ken Long
Hello all...

I'm researching moving my TSM server from AIX to W2K. My tape library is a
Magstar 3757-L18, six drives, each pair on its own SCSI bus.

In the Installation and User's Guide for the IBM TotalStorage Tape Device
Drivers, chapter 36 - W2K Device Driver Management, the last sentence in
the Installation Overview states:

"All drives accessible from a medium changer must be on the same physical
SCSI bus as the changer."

Am I misunderstanding this, or is it wrong? Is this saying I must put all
six drives on one SCSI bus?

Any advice would be appreciated.

Thanks... Ken

Re: BACKUP STGPOOL

2003-03-05 Thread James Taylor
Is there still no way to enter a command in that will cancel a process
immediately. For years we have had to put up with this problem. There are
cases where we have seen reclamations, backups, or archives where the
process is obviously stalled and we can't kill the process until the current
item that the process is working on completes. Or we must have a drive to
perform an emergency task, but the drives ate tied up transferring a huge
file from one tape to another.
Is there something with more authority than 'can proc #'?

Is it possible to see how many gigabytes have beend moved (like in Q

If I cancel the PROCESS does TSM finish the copy of the current file or
does

reset the transaction?

Renaming a W2K node

2003-03-05 Thread Todd Lundstedt
AIX 4.3.3 running TSM Server 4.2.1.7.

I have a few client nodes that are W2K servers. Oddly, they are named
after our NT servers (NT-ServerA, NT-ServerB, etc..). The dsm.opt file
contains the NT machine name as the NodeName. I would like to change the
NodeName to W2K-ServerA, but not rename the machine name.
... I stopped the scheduler service on the client node.
... I modified the name in dsm.opt, and saved the file
... I renamed the node on the TSM Server ("rename node nt-servera
w2k-servera", or whatever the command is... I actually used the web admin
GUI to do it).
... I entered "dsmc query session" at the command line of the client node.
... ... it indicated it was node W2K-ServerA, requested the user ID, and
password.. I entered (defaulted) the ID, and keyed in the password for that
node. The information was returned as expected.
... I entered "dsmc query session" at the command line of the client node,
again.
... ... The information was returned as expected, without ID and password
being required (by the way, the opt file does have passwordaccess
generate), still indicating it was the new nodename, W2K-ServerA.
... I started the service up... it started and quietly failed (no GUI
messages on the screen). I checked the dsmsched.log file, and it appeared
that it attempted to connect using NT-ServerA instead of W2K-ServerA.

Baffled.. so
... I checked to properties on the service.. I didn't see anything that
indicated NT-ServerA.
... I started the Backup/Archive GUI (vers 5.1.x) and checked the
preferences there. Everything was as I would have expected it to be based
on the values in the dsm.opt file, including the node name being
W2K-ServerA

After much searching of documentation and scratching of head, I punted and
changed everything (dsm.opt, nodename on TSM server, etc.) back to
NT-ServerA and the service started up and stayed up.

What am I missing to change the node name? Something is still using the
old node name when it attempts to contact the TSM server, and of course,
that nodename no longer exists on the TSM server. I did do some looking
around in that quickFaQ that Richard links to all the time... didn't find
anything in there that jumped out at me. Same with the last 3 months of
ADSM.org archives, and IBM's horridly slow and completely non-user-friendly
support pages.

I am lost...

Thanks in advance
Todd

2003-03-05 Thread Rick W
I feel silly asking this question but I know the answer would be known to
you all. My company does mainly full/selective backups and does not use
incrementals. I recently wished to change this policy to take advantage
of TSM's ability to handle incrementals (besides our tsm DB is getting
large). We do incremental backups of a flat file database to disk and
those expire after a period of one day. This is a "just in case" backup.
I wish to do incremental backups but to a different disk pool. I just
read about an option that can be put in the dsm.sys file DIRMC. Would
this be the option I need for placing my incrementals into a different
management class (ie .. different disk pool)? I say yes but I would like
confirmation. The other question that I have is that in planning for a DR
do I just follow the old rule of incrementals daily and a weekly
selective and if you have a disaster get the weekly and the incremental
and restore. I know none of you know what are retention or backup
policy's are but I want to know if this jives with the "normal" TSM
procedure or if there is a better way that I am not aware of. The classes
dont cover policy's very well and what is the best method so im relying on
everyone's experience here.

Thanks for the assistance all,

Web site migration conference call

2003-03-05 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Hello all,

It has come to my attention that the Tivoli Support Technical Exchange is
hosting some conference calls to reach more customers and help them
understand the move of the old Tivoli web site to the ibm.com site. These
calls will cover the basic functions of the web site, registration
questions, and navigation to the most requested content on our site.

Customers will have to go to the Support technical exchange site and
register for the call. There are two calls scheduled for March (one of
them is tomorrow, the other is on the 13th). More calls are planned for
April, with those dates to be determined.

Interested customers should go to
http://www-3.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/supp_tech_exch.html and
register for the session of their choice.

If you have any problems registering, please contact Luis Nevarez at

2003-03-05 Thread Natarajan, Suresh (MED, TCS)
Hi Rick,

The incremental backup in TSM is the best solution to optimise the database
size, instead of doing daily selective.
When you want to do the incremental backup in an seperate diskpool create a
new management class will the appropriate backup attributes and specify the
storage destionation to you new diskpool.
Specify the list of files to backup in the dsm.sys file using the inclexcl
option.

The option DIRMC is used to specify to which management class does the
directories should be backuped, not the files. If you donot specify this
option(DIRMC)directories will be automaically
backuped by TSM to the Management class which has the higher retention in
the activated policy set.

Hope you understand

this is true, if you want to use removeable storage manager (RSM)
with tsm it should be no problem using different scsi buses.

I hope this helps.
