If you want to use onbar for your backup, you have to use Storage Manager
that makes use of XBSA. Onbar is meant to work that way

Hi list,

Can I use the native backup from Informix, OnBar, to perform its own backup
and then use the TSM Backup/Archive Client to copy this data to a tape
storage pool ? Has anybody done that ?

The reason I ask is because we do not have the TDP for Informix to perform
online backup with TSM.

Thanks.

From a sales standpoint, this makes sense when taken in the larger context.

In the old days...

We paid for Extended Library, DRM, etc. Basically paid all this money on
the server side rather than the client side.
In the new days, we pay $625 for the server and then $625 per
processor/client.
For moderately sized sites, say up to 50-75 clients/processors, it works
out
to be about the same.
For small sites, TSM is now much less expensive.

For large sites, TSM is now much more expensive.

What needs to happen, and what those of us who sell TSM are trying to
influence, is a sliding client price scale. Or perhaps the elimination of
the per processor nature of this pricing. Most systems have two processors
now so the real cost is $1250 per client which is probably outrageous.
There is the Server Lite variant of this. This is for small TSM server
environments: 40 slots, 3 drives or less, no DRM. Per processor client
price is much less than $625.
Clearly this needs to shake out a bit. In the meantime, IBM recognizes the
problem (so why don't they fix it?) and will discount when you scream.
I believe they need creative input on this issue rather than the rants they
are getting. They must compete, but they must do so on an even footing.
The way TSM was priced before did not compete well. The cost of entry was
too high. Now the cost is born on the client side where it should have
been all along, but it now needs tweaking. Let's help our friends at IBM
work this out.

I'm probably going to be looking at new NT licenses soon -- and if they
think they're going to get this kind of vigorish from us, they're crazy.
We'll end up running NT Backup to on-board CDR drives -- the drives are
around $100 and you can get 100 disks from OfficeMax for the cost of sales
tax and a stamp if you watch the sales flyers.
I always thought the ADSM 2.x price of $100 per NT *box* was a good fit --
and I haven't seen ANYTHING in TSM 4.x or 5.x that would justify a 500% (or
higher -- would a 4-way box go for $2,112?) price increase.
Somehow I see a "come to glory" meeting with my CIO, my IBM Marketing rep,
my Tivoli marketing rep, and our preferred VAR in my future.
And I *still* want to see a comprehensive, easily understood price list,
readily accessible, WITHOUT registration or a customer number. Discounting
may be customer specific and proprietary, but in this day and age, price is
not and trying to hide it just means you no longer want to sell to ME. I
won't do an NDA on prices and I won't accept an NDA on prices.

Yes, I just purchased a single processor license, it was $528 or so USD.
The ones
I purchased just before year end were about $218USD.
Unless new customers are coming in with huge discounts, I think that TSM is
now
priced out of the market.
As a consultant (in a former life) I would be seriously considering taking
my customers

I love the TSM concept, but economics is what rules. And there is not
enough difference
in the technological differences to make up the economic ones at this

This is turning out to be an interesting thread to watch. Lots of emotion
(it hits us all where it hurts ... in the pocket book). IMHO what we
are seeing is the market responding to a vendor pricing scenario change.
Not good or bad, just different. IBM's changes will change the way
customers react and what they purchase. Then when the results of the
changes are seen, IBM will change it again to again try to force a
change from customers.

To me it looks like IBM's motive is profit (not a bad motive).
Customers motive is to keep costs down of backups (again not a bad thing).

And the market, whether folks use OpenSource, TSM, Legato, NetBackup, or
other products, will be the response the customers have to the market and
vendor pressures and technologies.

... In any case, it is interesting to watch! ... JC

Mario - I shudder to think of this cause, but...

It may be the case that some spud in your shop decided to set up a Windows box
with the same network address as your prevailing AIX system. Or some network
reconfiguration went awry. I would recommend poring over your TSM server
Activity Log for the times and network addresses when these sessions occurred,
to see if this is indeed the case. You may have to get your network people
involved, either to identify the perpetrator or examine their change logs for
any work they did which corresponds to that date. (Whoever was operating the
NT system would seem to know client passwords.)

Error ANS1357S w/OS390-AIX

2003-03-20 Thread Mario Novelli
I'm having a problem and can't figure out what happened or how to
fix. I've inherited Tivoli V4.2 on OS390. We are currently backing up
several AIX boxes with Oracle DB's on them. This basically consist of a
server backup part and the Oracle DB using the Oracle TDP (not sure it
that's the correct terminology).
Everything was running fine till 3/18. One of the AIX machines starting
getting the ANS1357S error. I did not perform any maint on the 390 server
and none was done on the AIX system, its still running
v4.1.something. When you fire Tivoli up on the AIX system via "dsm" the
X-window displays the above error and displays the same
version/release/maint lvl as on the other AIX systems.
Rummaging around using the web admin client, displaying nodes I noticed
that the "Platform" for the problem nodes on this machine says "WinNT"
instead of "AIX" (for server) or "TDP Oracle AIX" (for Oracle) as it says
for the machine/nodes that it is successfully backing up.
Is this the problem? How did it happen and how can I fix it?

Did I explain the problem OK?

Re: License Pricing

2003-03-20 Thread Ted Byrne
Doesn't the new licensing scheme result in 1) higher prices for =
clients, but 2) lower prices for the server.
...
So if you plan to back up a just a small number of clients, you may =
actually come out cheaper?
Can anyone confirm this (possibly erroneous) opinion?
Tivoli certainly doesn't make it easy to understand.
Wanda,

Your opinion is correct. For a small installation, TSM can actually be
less expensive to purchase than it used to be.
Speaking from the standpoint of someone working for a reseller, this can be
a good thing.
However, in my opinion, the "tipping point" where a TSM solution starts
costing more than it would have before is *way* too low. I have not
done an exacting analysis on where that point actually is, but for some
customers, what was once 40-50K software purchase would now be in the
hundreds of thousands of dollars.
The fact that it licensing is now CPU-based rather than "box-based"
introduces a very ugly multiplier effect at customers where the typical
Wintel server is 2-way or 4-way. What used to be a $217 client (for a
4-way Wintel machine) is now anywhere from $1400 to $2500 list (depending
on the size of the library being used) in quantities of 1. Quantity
discounts are, of course, available...
The figures I quote are from the IBM Tivoli Price Estimator tool. "Prices
are suggested prices only and are subject to change in IBM's sole discretion."
Even if you're not adding clients, the licensing change introduces a very
stiff increase in maintenance costs, as well.
My opinion only...
(But I have shared it with folks from IBM/Tivoli when I've had the chance.)

We've been running prompted mode backups for a few months and have
been
running the AIX TSM Server 5.1.6.2 for about a month and life has been
good. Last night, NONE of our prompted mode backups started. There
were no server side "ANR2561I Schedule prompter contacting VHOST3
(session 23462) to start a scheduled operation." messages that we
normally get at the start of the backup window. Other than backups
not
being started, the server appears to be responding normally and
complete
the daily administrative tasks without error. There are no entries
in
the client dsmsched or dsmerror logs for the clients that did not run.
Our lone polling mode backup did run normally.

Any ideas what might have caused this or things to look for? I've
sent
logs to TSM support and if no one comes up with things to check, we'll
restart the server before tonights backups and hope that clears
things.

Not sure about Exchange but it is probably like SQL Server 7 in that it
really does not like name changes especially if you are in the 5.5 range.
You will probalbly have to install exchange with the production name then
restore. More of a Microsoft thing than a Tivoli thing.

Re: Backup Profiles

2003-03-20 Thread Andrew Raibeck
No problems with EXCLUDE that I am aware of. However, if this is your
actual EXCLUDE syntax:

exclude.dir vol1:...\Windows NT *.* Workstation Profile\Recent\

Then it needs to be fixed. If the file specification contains blank spaces
(as does the one you mentioned), then it must be enclosed in quotes, like
this:

exclude.dir "vol1:...\Windows NT *.* Workstation Profile\Recent\"

Also, what is the exact file pattern you wish to exclude (the above
doesn't look right)? Should it be more like this:

exclude.dir "vol1:...\Windows NT Workstation Profile\Recent\*.lnk"

If the above doesn't help resolve the problem for you, then it would be
helpful if you could provide at last one specific example of a
fully-qualified file name you would like to exclude, and the content of
your current include/exclude list.

Re: TDP for Exchange - 5mb/s throughput?

2003-03-20 Thread Prather, Wanda
Could be anything - a switch somewhere between you and the H50, or even the
PCI bus in the Compaq.

First thing I would suggest is trying an FTP.
You can do that from a DOS window.
Take a fairly large file (at least 100MB, preferably larger) and FTP it to a
temp directory on your H50.
Do it 4-5 times until you get consistent timings.

Whatever throughput you get with FTP, is the best you can expect in that
configuration.
The TSM backup client or TDP can't ever do any FASTER than that, should be
somewhat slower.

If you get the same throughput with FTP, it's either a problem with your
network or your Compaq.

If you get better throughput with FTP, could be a TDP, Exchange, or TSM
server issue. (TSM server is the least likely problem, unless it is really
bogged down with other TSM work.)

Then try the same file just with the regular TSM backup client and see what
throughput you get.
If it's faster than the TDP, then the problem must be either the TDP or
Exchange.

Etc. Divide and conquer. Removing TSM from the equation is a good way to
diagnose throughput problems.

We are running TDP-E on a Compaq 4way Xeon w/4gb mem. We backup 40gb in
around 2.25 hrs, which comes out in the range of 5mb/s. We have run the
backup across the fast ethernet and also the gig-e connection, with no
apparent difference. The box does not show any cpu or memory hit during
the backup period.
Does anyone have experience with TDP MSExchgV2 (shows client version
4.2.2.0) that would suggest where the bottleneck might be? We are
coming into an IBM H50 4-way w/2gb memory, TSM 4.2.1.9, going to an SSA
diskpool.

Re: SELECT STATEMENT NOT WORKING

2003-03-20 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Joni,

Your observations are symptomatic of APARs IC28825 and IC34609. You can
find more detail about these by going to the IBM web site (www.ibm.com)
and doing a search on these APAR numbers.

You need to hard-code a value in your date criterion, although this could
be automated through the help of a script.

As a "sanity" check, try the following:

  SELECT node_name, scheduled_start, schedule_name, status
  FROM events
  WHERE (node_name LIKE 'HMCH%' OR node_name LIKE 'HMPG%')
    AND scheduled_start> '2003-03-18'
  ORDER BY node_name

Also be careful with the '>' sign, as this could be interpreted as
redirection. Note how I put the '>' sign immediately to the right of the
"scheduled_start" part.

Re: Win2000 Restore

2003-03-20 Thread Prather, Wanda
I don't think the Redbook on TSM & Win2K deals with user profiles, as they
assume you are backing up servers and most people don't care about the
desktop profile for server administrators. We back up about 400 Win2K pro
machines, so the profile matters to us.

1) When you reinstall the new windows, you should not join the domain, do
the restore in a "work group".
2) After you restore the system objects and before you reboot, you MAY need
to take extra steps to restore your profile, which is stored in ntuser.dat
and UsrClass.dat

Usually, if you are logged off during the backup, you don't have to make any
special effort to rebuild the profile. If you are logged ON during the
backup so that ntuser.dat and UsrClass.dat don't get backed up, you have to
recover the profile from the registry backup. And you have to do it BEFORE
Win2K creates that new .001 profile, which it will do if it doesn't find the
right ntuser.dat file.

I've done a lot of testing on this part.

My procedures and a document on profiles are posted at www.coderelief.com.
Click to the Scripts & Links depot,
Click the DISCUSS and STORE SCRIPTS link, TSM scripts, Disaster Recovery.
They are under the topic Win2K BARE METAL RESTORE. They aren't scripts,
just documentation. Might help you find all the pieces and parts.

Re: Informix backup

2003-03-20 Thread Niklas Lundstrom
Hello

I'm not an Informix dba either...But it's pretty straigt forward

This is the backupcommand that we run as a preschedulercommand:

onmode -uy shutdown of database
ontape -s -L 0 < E:\server\scripts\enter.txt
When you run ontape you have to press enter, the enter.txt files contain one
enter

onmode -mstarts the database

There are more cmdfiles involved since we are renaming the backupfiles and
moves them to another directory because the backup always goes to the same
file, backup.bup, and to save the backup you have to copy and rename that
file.
The onconfig looks like this:

# System Archive Tape Device

#TAPEDEV\\.\TAPE0 # Tape device path
TAPEDEV L:\Backserv\Backup.bup # Tape device path
TAPEBLK 16 # Tape block size (Kbytes)
TAPESIZE200 # Maximum amount of data to put on
tape (Kbytes)

We used to run onbar but the dba wanted to restore single tables and to do
that you had to shutdown the database and run ontape , don't ask me why it
couldn't be done with onbar..

Niklas

Re: TDP for Exchange - 5mb/s throughput?

2003-03-20 Thread Hart, Charles
We see 10/11Mbs transfer rate over 100mb to Gig-e. Remember even if you have Gig-e
your bottleneck will be your slowest link. (IE 100mb which max transfer rate is 10mbs)
You may also want to verify that none of your LAN links are set to auto negotiate as
that will always screw things up.

We are
coming into an IBM H50 4-way w/2gb memory, TSM 4.2.1.9, going to an SSA
diskpool.

Re: 3466 End of Support

2003-03-20 Thread Jolliff, Dale
Last I heard (from an unofficial source) was that there were around 200
installations left. Second level support told me at one point that the
upgrade to TSM version 5.x would mark the end of 3466 support - at that
point, support would simply be broken up into respective hardware, AIX and
TSM support packages.

That said, I still have not seen an official upgrade to 5.x for the 3466 -
we haven't been really watching anyway, as ours will be decommissioned
shortly anyway.

HTH, YMMV

flie name too long - Windows NT 4.0/SP6a - Client 4.1.3.0

Hello All,
we are currently running a 4.1.3.0-Client to backup an Window NT 4.0-Server.
Now that our path-name-&-file-name-length has grown,

We cannot alway control what all the users are doing (while Windows
is fine with it) - does anyone know how to resolve this (newer client,

Thank you in advance.

Backing up HPUX on Itanium

2003-03-20 Thread Arni Eggertsson
Hey there guys

A customer of mine recently bought two HP Itanium2 Boxes and is running Oracle 9.2 RAC
on them. When he called us and wanted to back these machines up we hit a brick wall.
According to Tivoli we will not see Oracle client for HPUX Itanium2 until late October
or November. What makes this even harder is that the Backup/Archive client has not
been released for HPUX Itanium2 either.

So we decided to do some experiments,
I've managed to install the Backup/Archive client on another machine and copy the
files accross to the Itanium2 machines and the Backup/Archive client seems to work
without problems (due to PA-RISC emulation in the Itanium2) We haven't tried yet to
do the same trick with the Oracle client but we plan to do it.

What I wanted to know is if somebody else has tried any of this and how it worked out?

Best regards,
Arni

Re: overland tape library?

2003-03-20 Thread Cahill, Ricky
I use a rack full of Neo 2000's to do our DR restores through, apart from
working out the initial changes (as I use an STKL180) it's always worked
pretty well.

Only thing I do dislike is the cap size, on the STK you have a nice big 10
slot cap, on the stacked neos you configure up each to have a mail slot with
capacity for 1 tape each, so you have to open a dor on each lib to put in or
take out one tape.

Other than that nice library.

Hi Alexander!

I´ve used some older Overlands together with TSM, with no greater
difficulties than with other brands.
Also I have used a LOT of Cpq/HP MSL-series, both with SDLT and LTO, which
is actually the Overland 2000-series and I really, really like it,
especially equipped with LTO-drives.
The 4000-series is the same machine with a bigger housing, so in my opinion
a great machine!

One concideration though is the availibility of support for the hardware, a
very important issue you´d be wise to check out carefully before deciding.
Sometimes the more expensive license-manufactured brands just makes more
sence in the long run.

Ämne: overland tape library?

Hey,

Does anyone use the Overland Storage Neo 4100 or 4200 LTO-1 tape
library
with TSM 5.1 server?

We are upgrading our tape library and our ADSM server (3.1 -> 5.1),
and
are trying to decide what library to get. We've been looking at the
IBM
3583-L36 Tape Library, which uses 36 LTO-1 tapes, up to 7TB
compressed
capacity, with two LTO drives, which is gonna cost about 36K.

But I recently found out about Overland storage which sells a
product
called NEO4100, with 3 LTO-1 drives, 60 tape slots, up to 12TB
capacity
compressed, which sells for about 30K.

So it seems like for 6K less we can get almost twice the capacity,
with an
extra drive! That extra drive would totally kick butt. But if
Overland
hardware sucks and breaks and doesn't work well with TSM 5.1, then
screw
it.

Any comments?

Thanks in advance!

Re: License Pricing

2003-03-20 Thread Cahill, Ricky
The pricing is probably great for new users as the actual server prices are
down a lot, but as we installed our system 4 years ago we got stung for the
high server pricing and now we're upgrading clients we're getting stung for
that as well.

Was hopeing to get our three main SQL boxes moved to TSM asap, but
presenting the boss with a bill for £5000+ just for licenses for the 3 boxes
is going to stop it dead.

And the market, whether folks use OpenSource, TSM, Legato, NetBackup, or
other products, will be the response the customers have to the market and
vendor pressures and technologies.

... In any case, it is interesting to watch! ... JC
