export TSM server 4.1.4.1 fails

2003-07-28 Thread [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Hello TSM experts,

I've got a TSM server 4.1.4.1 running on Windows NT SP6a. In the weekend a full export
is taken with the command:

export server filedata=backupactive devclass=DLTCLASS1 scratch=no
volumenames=000375,000383,09

This has been running fine for quiet a period (a few years), but now the export fails
with following messages in the activity log:

Does anybody have an idea what is going wrong here? What is the mentioned return code
87? Is this a known APAR fixed in a later release of TSM (the client didn't want an
upgrade yet).

Thanks for any hints, guidelines how to solve this problem!

We currently have over 160Gb of Notes mail databases that need to be backed
up nightly. Due to incompatabilities with the Notes TDP, our version of TSM
(v4.2.2.5) and the way compaction runs on our Notes servers, we have to use
the normal Tivoli backup client to backup the mailboxes. It takes about 12

of this time seems to be spend trying and then retrying to send mailboxes to
the TSM server. A typical schedule log looks like this:

Is there anything we can do reduce the window for this backup? Both the TSM
server and our Notes server have dedicated 1Gb links so bandwidth isn't a
problem. The Backup Copy Group for the Management Class the Notes data is
allocated to has Copy Serialization set to 'Shared Static'. Would changing
this to Dynamic be beneficial in reducing the amount of retries that occur
and also setting CHANGERETRIES to a lower option help?

Re: High Utilization on Netware Server

2003-07-28 Thread Jack Magill
Compression will not help in this case, since all compression must be done and undone
by the clients cpu, this will put more load and the novell server and not alieviate it
as you might think. What are the sizes of the files being backed up (in general)?
What is the size of the cpu that is being used on the server? How much ram is
available? and last but not least what are the comm buffer settings on the client?

Separate Domino server for restores

2003-07-28 Thread Bill Boyer
How would I go about creating another Domino server for restores?? I
installed the TDP agent on another Domino server, configured the DSM.OPT
file to use the production server nodename. I can do restores, but when I
try to do an applylogs, I get ACD5769I that says I can't apply the logs.

I was trying to follow the procedures in the TDP user's guide for alternate
server restore, but it wasn't making much sense to us, as non-Domino
literates. What we need is a simple way to get this server configured so
that we can apply the logs during the activate process. They used to do this
on their production Domino server until it crashed due to a resources
shortage during an APPLYLOGS process. Now they're gun-shy and want to use a
separate server, which is what the user's guide recommends.

TIA,

And what you would really have to do is:
- retrieve the archive to a computer system
- backup up that computer system
- generate backupset (it uses active backup versions to create backupset)

hi folks,

Is there any way to move an archive directly to a backupset without
going to the process of "retrieving the archive and generating the
backupset".

Re: Expiration Question on 5.1.6.4

2003-07-28 Thread Mahesh Tailor
Thanks for the responses, Mike and Richard.

As I mentioned DRMDBBACKUPEXPIREDAYS is set to 5-days.

[From my previous email] DRM expiration is set as follows:

DB Backup Series Expiration Days: 5 Day(s)
Recovery Plan File Expiration Days: 14 Day(s)

Which is much less than the 30-day del volhist and should avoid any
conflicts with DR expirations.

Mahesh

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 07/28/03 11:47AM >>>
Hello
You need to use SET DRMDBBACKUPEXPIREDAYS, instead of del volhist
t=dbb.
This is an excert from help del volhist.

  5. For users of DRM, the database backup expiration should be
controlled
with the SET DRMDBBACKUPEXPIREDAYS command instead of this DELETE
VOLHISTORY command. Using the DELETE VOLHISTORY command removes
TSM's
record of the volume. This can cause volumes to be lost that were
managed by the MOVE DRMEDIA command. The recommended way to manage
the
automatic expiration of DRM database backup volumes is by using
the SET
 DRMDBBACKUPEXPIREDAYS command.

DRM expiration is set as follows:

And, when I perform a q volh t=dbb, I get DBB's that are retained from

What am I missing? Can someone explain this?

Thanks.

I see. So no backup software will state that they will perform an
authorative restore because it's up to us, after performing the restore,
to
execute the NTDSUTIL utility and do it Microsoft's way - the supported
way.

The difference between a non-authorative restore and an authorative
restore
is that after restoring the System Object you run the NTDSUTIL utility to
make the entire AD, or only a part of the tree authoritative. All this
does
in increase the replication ID for those objects by 10,000. When the
server
is then rebooted the objects with the higher ID will be replicated to the
domain.

ALL restores of AD are non-authorative. You make it authoritative by
running
the NTDSUTIL command supplied by Microsoft.

is that after restoring the System Object you run the NTDSUTIL utility to
make the entire AD, or only a part of the tree authoritative. All this does
in increase the replication ID for those objects by 10,000. When the server
is then rebooted the objects with the higher ID will be replicated to the
domain.

ALL restores of AD are non-authorative. You make it authoritative by running
the NTDSUTIL command supplied by Microsoft.

You're meddling with DRM. DRM is a regimen of its own. Let it be.
See Admin Ref manual, doc. of the DELete VOLHistory command, Note 5.

Expiration Question on 5.1.6.4

2003-07-28 Thread Mahesh Tailor
Hello,

TSM: 5.1.6.4 w/DRM enabled
AIX: 4.3.3.10

I having been looking at the completion of my expiration processes for
the last 15 days and I see, for example, the following:

07/27/03 15:15:01 ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command:
EXPIRE
  INVENTORY

07/27/03 15:15:01 ANR0984I Process 709 for EXPIRE INVENTORY
started in the
  BACKGROUND at 15:15:01.

07/27/03 15:15:01 ANR0811I Inventory client file expiration
started as
  process 709.

07/27/03 17:42:42 ANR2369I Database backup volume and recovery
plan file
  expiration starting under process 709.

07/27/03 17:42:42 ANR0812I Inventory file expiration process 709
completed:
  examined 3828936 objects, deleting 420981
backup objects,
0 archive objects, 0 DB backup volumes, and 0
recovery
plan files. 0 errors were encountered.

07/27/03 17:42:42 ANR0987I Process 709 for EXPIRE INVENTORY
running in the
BACKGROUND processed 420981 items with a
completion state
  of SUCCESS at 17:42:42.

The process is completing successfully, but as you can see no DB backup
volumes or recovery plans are expired. I have an admin schedule that
has the following command in it: delete volhistory todate=today-30
type=all, which I do not think would affect the expiration of DB and
recovery plan process since it is set for 30-days.

DRM expiration is set as follows:

DB Backup Series Expiration Days: 5 Day(s)
Recovery Plan File Expiration Days: 14 Day(s)

And, when I perform a q volh t=dbb, I get DBB's that are retained from
13-days ago.

What am I missing? Can someone explain this?

Thanks.

Mahesh

Just wondering what settings need to be changed to allow more then two
drives to be used in a tape stgp reclaimation? I'd like to be able to
reclaim more then one tape at a time per storage pool, such as two tapes
but not sure how to do this. Our LTO device class in TSM is set to MOUNT
LIMIT = DRIVES, should this be changed? There is 4 LTO drives in our
library at present.

Also we have offsite vaulting happening on a 2nd TSM server located at our
DR site. Is there anyway to increase the amount of sessions our main TSM
server uses to reclaim offsite volumes and send backup data to our DR
server as it only every uses one session when reclaiming our OFFSITE
storage pool or send data to it.

Thanks in advance.

Hi Tivoliers,

I have upgraded my office NT4.0 PC to IE6.1 and can longer use the command
line interface on the server web interface. Java V1.4 didn't fix the
problem.

The error I see in Java Console is:

   java.lang.ClassFormatError: WebConsole (Bad magic number)

This is also a problem when I dial in from home (Win98+ and IE6.0) since I
upgraded the server to TSM V5.1.6.3 - no error report available.

Has anyone else had this problem? Any Fixes or APAR's around?
Any suggestions (Can't change OS or Hardware!!!)

Many thanks in advance
