IMPORT NODE issues...........

2003-09-25 Thread Adrian Hicks
Hi,
We are currently attempting to import a node that spans over 43 tapes. It has failed
may times due to, the backup over ruling the import priority and grabbing a tape
drive. Thus killing the import node.
We don't wish to turn off logging from "roll forward" Any other ideas so the "import
node" can consume only 2 tape drives and all other processes only take up the other
tape drives ??

Thanks,
Adrian

Re: Backuset processing question

2003-09-25 Thread John Naylor
Richard,

The answer to your question is no.
If you were looking to restore a single file, then you might need to rad through
a lot of tape, but if you are restoring a whole filespace then you shpuld see
data being restored straightaway. I found it a lot easier to deal with
backupsets taken at filespace level, in fact I can't remember now if I ever got
them to work trying them as a complete client.
Netware is finicky for syntax, say you are trying to restore client1 data:
filespace to client2 then the following syntax will work. NB. don't forget that
final backslash

load dsmc rest backupset -repl=n -su=y backupsetname client1\data:
client2\\data:\

Hope this helps.

Yesterday I asked about a long Netware restore.

In playing around, we are tring to perform a restore of the
backupset that we created.

The backup set looks like:
  4 tapes (IBM 3590)
  Size: 240gb
  Files: 938,617
  Backup from: NW5.1 SP3
  Restore to: NW5.1 SP3
  TSM client v5.1

When we start the backupset restore, it looks like the TSM server
is trying to read through all the tapes. It mounted the first tape
and appeared to read it for over an hour. It then mounted the second
tape . . . . and is still doing something with it after 30 min.
The Netware admin doesn't see any activity on the system we are
restoring to. Very weird.

Q) Does a backupset restore read through the entire backupset before
actually sending any data?

Thanks

Rick

Re: Scalar DLC

2003-09-25 Thread Hoang, Michael D CONT (NETS)
We are using this same configuration. In the past, we partitioned a Scalar
10K with the Scalar DLC into 2 virtual libraries. We run TSM in both
environments running on AIX. We have had some problems that was attributed
to the Scalar DLC, but I believe we would have had those same problems
regardless of what backup software and OS we are running. Those problems
seem to have been resolved. We have re-partitioned the library recently via
the Scalar DLC and ran into some issues that multiple reboots of each system
seems to have fixed.

This return code indicates the journal service is unable open the drive

locked by another process (rc 32 is a sharing violation).

The drive is opened for "list access" which is about the lowest level
access that can be requted
so I'm not sure why this would happen.

What level of the journal service are you running ?

Re: Oracle Recovery failed

2003-09-25 Thread Neil Rasmussen
The log from the first backup is a little baffling because Oracle is
claiming that it cannot find the archive log but Data Protection for
Oracle is not complaining. Compare it to the second log where DP for
Oracle is actually giving an error that the archive log requested by
Oracle cannot be found on the TSM Server. The information that you have
given me thus far does not tell me much.

However, in this RAC environment are you backing up your data all from the
same node in the cluster? If not are you duplicating the DP for Oracle
nodename to all DP for Oracle nodes so that all the backups are cataloged
to the TSM Server under the same node? The most common problem seen in RAC
environments are the fact that backups are done from different nodes from
within the environment but each node is using slightly different TSM/TDP
options so that during the restore to a particular node not all of the
backup information can be retrieved.

These are just some thoughts that I have. If none of this helps I highly
suggest that you use our support channels to resolve this problem; they
are knowledgable in this area.

Hey Richard,

From my finite experience of restores from Backupsets and with
Novell/NetWare, (I just did one (500 Gigs worth) in August), I found out
that if you have 7 tapes and the information is on tape 1, it puts the
information out (restores) when it gets to tape 1, but has to read through
the other 6 tapes to finish the restore no matter if all the data is on
tape 1.

POSTSCHEDULECMD failed, but event was successful

2003-09-25 Thread Bill Boyer
TSM Client 5.1.6.7 on Windows2000 SP4
TSM Server 5.1.7.1 on AIX 4.3.3

I have coded a PRE and POSTSCHEDULCMD that stops some Oracle services,
backups up and then restarts the services. My POSTSCHEDULECMD keeps track of
the highest return code and then EXIT %MAXCC%. Testing with this today, my
POSTSCHEDULECMD did and EXIT 2, and you see that in the DSMSCHED.LOG file.
The problem is that the event itself didn't Fail.

Executing Operating System command or script:
   c:\progra~1\tivoli\tsm\scripts\orastart.cmd
09/24/2003 22:17:10 Finished command. Return code is: 2
09/24/2003 22:17:10 ANS1903W The POSTCHEDULECMD command failed.
09/24/2003 22:17:10 Scheduled event '@166' completed successfully.
09/24/2003 22:17:10 Sending results for scheduled event '@166'.
09/24/2003 22:17:10 Results sent to server for scheduled event '@166'.

According to the TSM Client doc:

For Windows NT, 2000, XP systems: If the postschedulecmd command does not
complete with return code 0, the client will report that the scheduled event
completed with return code 8 (unless the scheduled operation encounters a
more severe error yielding a higher return code).

Why didn't my schedule event finish with Fail?? Anyone seen this behavior?

Netware 6 & TSM 5.2 Client

2003-09-25 Thread Rowan O'Donoghue
Hi all!

I have a customer who has just implemented Netware 6.0 and the TSM 5.2
client. Everything seems to be ok apart from the fact that there are SAN
volumes which are assigned to the Netware 6 server (filespace called
DATA01:) which are not recognised by the TSM client. the SYS: volume is
being picked up no problem. Even if I try and perform an INC DATA01:\ it
comes back telling me that the filespace is invalid.

Anyone have the same problem?

All the Netware 5 servers with the TSM 5.1 client are ok - then again, I
dont have any SAN attached volumes on these servers.

Can I create a Node Archive from a full-increment (full backup) in my backup diskpool? <

Has anyone had experience in this with making a node archive from the

TSM 5.1.6.3 W2K server
TSM client 5.1.5.15

We have a remote NT4 server client that we have take a spare W2K TSM
server to physically to make the first backup, as we are not sure its WAN
connection bandwidth is sufficient for this first backup..

I have made its first Backup (which is a full backup) into a diskpool.

I have also configured the client for compression and subfile backup.

My question is:

When we get this spare TSM server back to HQ, can I now make an archive of
the client from the backup in the diskpool?

If so, what steps are needed?

TIA.

Re: SQL Restore Fails

John,

Yes. I know what the problem is.
The answer can be found in the IBM Knowledge Base.Go here:

http://www-3.ibm.com/software/sysmgmt/products/support/IBMTivoliStorageManagerforDatabases.html

and search for "ANS1017E".

It will come up with 1 hit.. reference# 1114216.

In a nutshell... you need to increase the COMMTIMEOUT value
on your TSM Server to allow the SQL Server time to preformat the database.

Thanks,

2003-09-25 Thread Jim Kirkman
Here you go. A search on nss volumes on search.adsm.org will turn this
up rather quickly.

Novell's TID 10065605 and patch NW6SMS1A.EXE are needed. In particular,
you need the following entry in the smsrun.bas file: nlmArray =
Array("SMDR", "TSA600 /cluster=off", "TSAPROXY")in order for TSM to
recognize the clustered volumes.

SV: Can I create a Node Archive from a full-increment (full backup) in my backup diskpool? <

2003-09-25 Thread Pedersen.Michael Benny MIP
Hi Ken,

You can't make an Archive from a diskpool.
Archive are made over the NET. But you can export the Node data from your spare TSM
Server to the TSM Server at your HQ. If you want to save data for "Achive" but don't
want to make it over the NET you can make a backupset.

You can make a "backupset". See generate backupset.

You can only create an archive from a client so you could restore the data
somewhere then archive it.

Hi Bill,

I saw the same behavior on schedules of type=command.
I launched a backup script and even if the script exits with a return code of 8 (exit

The current versions are:

The doc you quoted explains the answer. The event is reported as completed

If you do a QUERY EVENT with FORMAT=DETAILED, I would expect you to see a
