Yes, it does. Moreover, it *does not* expect to have the DB/Log volume
size(s) provided to LOADFORMAT as can be seen on the syntax diagram (can
be found in Appendix A of Administrator's Reference, GC32-0769-00 for ITSM
v5.1.5).
The values 5000 and 3 should be entered as dsmfmt parameters.

Anyone know what errno=2 means below? The /tsm partition exists and has

3599-001, -002, -003 are 3590 J cartridges (10/20/30 GB)

/Prod_App/example/test/.../*

That would traverse the entire directory structure, I suppose you are getting every

Matching node number to node name?

I see these several times during my backup cycle. I'm also seeing problems with
throughput from many of my clients and the backups aren't completing. I'm guessing
that there's a connection and that whatever contention is causing these messages to be
generated is also preventing my backups from running. Unfortunately I don't have a
node named "39" and I don't see a column name to contain a node_number in the

Two TSM Servers with a Storage Agent?

2003-10-23 Thread Rowan O'Donoghue
Hi guys,

I want to be able to configure a server using the LAN-free storage agent to be able to
back up to storage pools on two different TSM servers.

I.e. It will backup direct to tape via the SAN to a backup storage pool defined on one
TSM server, and also backup direct to tape via the SAN to an ARCHIVE storage pool
define on another TSM server.

Can I just define two tsm storageservers on the storage agent??? Anyone know if this
is possible?

Re: TSM Downward Scaleability

2003-10-23 Thread Zlatko Krastev
I would rather disagree.
1. Zero on-site skills: from our experience even a clerical end-user can
sign a Fed-Ex delivery, unplug power and LAN cords from failed system, and
plug them back in the replacement server.
2. Limited on-site skills: Most often available - people with limited
knowledge of Windows, some have done hard-disk replacement (or can easily
be taught how to replace hot-swap disk). With unified hardware you can
send only pre-built disk instead of whole server.

The advanced part can be handed successfully to central site:
- with very inexpesive disks a local diskpool to hold all backups is not a
problem, copypool over WAN;
- enterprise-wide management products are common in big enterprises;
- TSM itself has very good enterprise management features (and I prefer
CLI which is WAN-friendly vs. WebAdmin)
- many of the restores are not BMR ones but for single file/directory;
- restores still can be performed through Web client using browser at
central site;
- TSM server can be rebuilt at central site and sent to satelite site for
replacement;
- BMR restore also can be performed at the central site and
workstation/disk be sent to satelite site.

Thus if I am the IT manager, instead of hiring or outsourcing people for
tens of remote sites, I can manage this with existing staff at central
site or no more than one-two persons in addition to TSM admin.
For me TSM scales down to 0 tape drives. Of course, if total occupied
space on the remote site machines is going to become beyond 100 GB, an
autoloader or library is a must. But for office workstations using TSM
prograssive backup, sub-file backups and having MP3/AVI/DivX/etc.
excluded, the tape-less server is fine. Such offices usually do not
utilize the WAN during the night.

It's not realistic to have server systems of any kind at a site where
there is
no technical administration: someone has to be knowledgeable about the
systems
in order to minimally inspect them visually when there is a problem.
Clerical
people simply can't serve in that capacity. Remote administration is a
feasible
concept, but when hardware stops working, knowledgable eyes and
experienced
hands must be at the site. Such a responsibility might be contracted to
an
outside company, which can feasibly attend to disparate physical sites.
Consider also that while unattended backup, by various means by products
of
different scales, is not difficult, the backups are done because of the
prospect
of the need for a restoral, which can involve a full-down computer, and
that is
beyond the capabilities of clerical people to address: someone has to know
what
to do, particularly where a collection of office computers will seldom be
uniform.

TSM is an enterprise product, intended for larger installations, which is
to say
those where there are concentrated server facilities and network access.
As
Wanda suggests, backup by remote offices over a WAN is the method of
choice
where TSM or like backup/restore product are involved. Again, the backup
is
easy, but restoral can be problematic. Advanced planning is necessary to
cover
all aspects of backup/restoral needs, which in turn is just a part of a
company's larger disaster recovery plan.

Joe - I regret that I haven't the knowledge to advise on getting the nodename
from the number; but you may see nearby messages about a client session
failing as a result, or the like.

You may be able to compensate for this problem by reducing the simultaneity of
sessions and processes, or by increasing server option RESOURCETimeout if
it is rather small (the default in v5 is 60 minutes, boosted from its
introductory value of 10 due to too many customer db contention problems).
But this may be a product problem that you need to refer to TSM Support.

Zlatko - I think that in your experiences that you were blessed with some
incidentally knowledgeable people at your outlying sites.
My experience with even local computer room operators is much less rosy,
which is to say disinterested, incapable, and hapless people who don't
know one connector from another. My experience suggests that depending upon
outlying natives may just prolong a business outage, relying too much on the
happenstance skills and knowledge of one or two people who happen to work at
such a location, and whether they are at work on the day of the outage.

Certainly, many computer outages are merely inconveniences which may affect
only a small number of people at an office. But it can, of course, scale to
full-blown site downtimes. Businesses are free to plan for outages as
minimally as they feel they can afford, based upon perceived impacts. I would
only encourage them to fully think through all the possibilities and
ramifications. We've certainly seen panic postings on ADSM-L where customers
have failed to plan their backups and recovery methods to address the kind of
outage they have just encountered - which is, of course, too late.

Re: Cleaning Machine for 3590 cartridges

2003-10-23 Thread Richard Sims
>I take it that you company do not use these model 3599 cleaning machine?

Dave - True, we do not. In the dim past I recall seeing cleaning machines
for open reel tapes, with a supply of special razor blades for
scraping gunk off the oxide surface of the tape as it sped by.
Such external cleaning measures were certainly appropriate in those days,
where operators touched the surface of the media and the tape was very
much more open to the environment.

These days, all removeable media remains at least somewhat exposed to the
atmosphere, but contact through handling is virtually non-existent, and so the
need for such externalized cleaning is dubious. The real value of a device such
as the Bow Industries "3599", in my experience, is in detecting and reporting
anomalies in the tape: wrinkles, creases, ripples, etc., which I have seen in
post mortems of failed cartridges. It is valuable to determine such without
having to unreel the tape into a cardboard box, to be able to return such tapes
to the manufacturer with a report telling them that their manufacturing process
was stinko that day, letting defectively made tapes get out of the factory.

2003-10-23 Thread Tom Kauffman
OK -- next step is to get current on the TSM client and the TDP_r3 client.

Both installers are broken under AIX.

I select this to install (install and update from all available software):

 tivoli.tsm.client.ba.aix51.64bit.common.

Failure occurred during pre_rm.
Failure occurred during rminstal.

Excuse me, I *did* choose which one to install!

So I un-install the TSM 4.2.1.11 client code by hand and re-run the TSM 5.1
install.

Then I install the TDP_R3 code. First of all, this is now a java-based
graphical install. There is a note in the README file on the FTP site
indicating that it can be installed on a serial console -- consult the
TIPHINTS file for the procedure. And to get the TIPHINTS file? Just run the
graphical install . . .

Next, as part of the install, the TDP code suggests a sample directory to
put the executables in:

/oracle/SBX/sapmnt/SBX/SYS/exe/run

Now we've been running SAP since the 3.0D days -- and the executables live
in /sapmnt/SID/exe but are referenced by the path /usr/sap/SID/SYS/exe/run
which symlinks to the /sapmnt/SID/exe directory. So where did this
incredibly bad amalgamation suggestion come from?

Alright - I fix the path, finish the install, indicating that I'm doing an
update and not a new install -- and then can't find backint. It seems that,
since the symlinks are still there from the prior release, they haven't been
replaced (even though I did uninstall TDP_R3 with the 4.2.x client code).

Now, having complained about the install -- at least the product works. I
successfully restored the online backup from yesterday that failed twice
yesterday and once today on the older API and TDP/R3.

However (there's ALWAYS a 'however') -- the new code takes longer!

Restoring the off-line backup with TSM 4.2.1.11 and TDP_R3 3.2.0.8:

And the same restore, with the TSM server less heavily loaded, with the TSM
API 5.1.6.9 and TDP_R3 3.3.2.0:

Re: Matching node number to node name?

2003-10-23 Thread Joe Howell
Thanks - I talked with support and they're going to send me some 'show' commands that
I can run to find out what the problem is. I've not been able to pin down exactly
what the node_name to node_number relationship is using the database (yet!). My
concern is that some sort of global table lock is happening and that's causing
problems for my backups.

Richard Sims <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> wrote:...

TDP for Lotus Domino 5.1.5.1

2003-10-23 Thread Rainer Holzinger
Hi all,

I'm about introducing TDP for Lotus Domino vers. 5.1.5.1 under Lotus Domino
5.0.12 and there are some questions. Maybe one of you have answers.

While testing I noticed, that there will be written a pair of ANE4991I
messages for each backed up Domino data base to TSM servers activity log.
One is indicating starting the backup operation while the other one
displays completion of backup. If there are a lot of data bases being
backed up, e.g. on selective backup once a week, there are thousands of
these messages being logged to TSM servers actlog. Is there a method to
avoid that? I haven't found a parameter within TDPD (domdsmc set ...)?

Also we are planning to enable Domino archive TxL into production servers.
It has already been tested in a test environment. Now the question arised
what would happen with the TSM server schedule used to archive those Domino
archive logs, while a 'long running backup' is being performed (e.g.
selective backup once a week) also initated by a TSM server schedule.
Wouldn't there be a risk that all Domino log extends could fill up
completely before that logs have been archived. How do you handle or avoid
that risk?

TIA,
Rainer

Choosing volumes for DR restores

2003-10-23 Thread Thomas Denier
We are in the process of reorganizing some of our storage pools. We
are using 'move nodedata' to move primary storage pool contents to
new storage pools. We are running 'backup stgpool' commands to create
new offsite copies in corresponding new copy storage pools. We are using
'delete volume' and 'backup stgpool' to clean up the copies left behind
in pre-existing copy storage pools. It is not clear that we will be able
to finish the copy storage pool cleanup before our next disaster recovery
test. If we don't finish by then our reconstructed server will have
access to two copies of some client backup files. How does TSM decide
which copy to use in this situation?

As for the TSA, from the messages, I guess 269 and the OS should be V6.

Has anyone tried TDP for Domino 5.2.1 to backup Domino 6.x on W2K to TSM

Thanks in advance

Re: Two TSM Servers with a Storage Agent?

2003-10-23 Thread Deon George
You could achieve this quite easily with "double everything" on the node
in question. IE: Two TSM Clients, Two storage agents.

Each client would talk to its own storage agent, that would talk to the
two TSM servers in question. You'll need to play with ports - so that each
client uses its own web interface port (if you want that), and each
storage agent listens on its own port.

Having two network interfaces, will help separate traffic, as would two
HBA's.

Is the directory information you referring about related to Windows
systems? You should use the DIRMC client option to store all your
directory information in a DISK based storage pool (DISK or FILE), so that
it remains on faster quicker access media for restore purposes. (Dont let
that stuff go to tape for the reasons you have outlined below.)

The DIRMC client option is not really required for Unix based systems, as
the database has enough space to store that information.

Dat,

Q VOL will only show SCRATCH tapes that have data on them, or DEFINED
tapes (when you use the define vol command), or sometimes (as you've
captured below), you will also see SCRATCH tapes that are EMPTY - this
will be because:

* They recently became empty and TSM hasnt yet deleted them (returning
them to the "scratch pool") - very rare,
* They are empty and offsite (as your example is below),

(Offsite SCRATCH volumes that are empty, remain in Q VOL so that you can
bring them back onsite - as soon as you mark them as onsite, they will be
deleted from Q VOL).

Now, if your tapes are empty and in your library and you CANT see them
with q VOL, then you will be able to see the with Q LIBV.

If you do a HELP UPDATE VOL - it'll tell you when TSM will delete SCRATCH
volumes from Q VOL.

To answer your question, do you need to relabel them - no. (You would only
need to relabel tapes if they were used by something outside of TSM -
which overwrote the TSM label.)

Deon,

Sorry if i was a bit vague, the question i am asking is does relable destroy
existing known tsm tapes or does tsm smart enough to know and prevent you
from doing it.
Secondly the tape was already define to tsm previous, why now does it give
me this error (we havent use it elsewhere)

I've also tried q libvol , but the tape isnt there either.

Re: tape status

2003-10-23 Thread Deon George
Dat,

No, TSM will NEVER let you (re)label a tape, if the tape is already known
to the current TSM server (ie: it is defined in Q VOLHIST or Q VOL).
If you try, in your activity log you'll see a label libv failure and the
reason why (and the existing label)...

If the tape was previously defined (you saw it in Q VOL), and now you cant
see it in Q VOL, then it is one of two things:

* It was a SCRATCH volume, that became empty and TSM deleted it.
* It was not a scratch volume, but a defined volume (DEF VOL command) and
somebody deleted it.

(You will know if volumes are scratch when you do a Q VOL F=D and look at
the "Scratch:" line.
