Re: Media error

2003-12-11 Thread Tab Trepagnier
Desale,

Are you sure there isn't a tape stuck in a drive or in the picker? The
last entry from the log shows "Changer failure".

Our 3583 experienced numerous failures, mostly due to the picker not
grabbing the tape properly and leaving it stuck in the drive. At that
point everything is out of sync - the library, TSM, etc. You should take
the library offline, open the door, and look inside. Ensure that what TSM
thinks is happening in the library matches its physical state.

There is an engineering change that adds some small springs to the LTO
drives to improve tape ejection. Also, the latest firmware for the
library tells the picker to extend farther when grabbing a tape to help
prevent "drops".

The 3583 does not have a window through which to examine the inner
workings of the library, so you have to take it offline and open the door
to see what's happened. Because of that we've removed the screws that
hold the top panel on the library. Now, if we have to look inside it, we
just remove that panel and peek in. This is not recommended if you live
in an area prone to earthquakes. We don't.

Re: Media error

2003-12-11 Thread Bob Booth - UIUC
A 'locate' error refers to a tape hardware error, in which a SCSI fast LOCATE
command fails. This is usually due to a corrupt tape table of contents
(however that is defined by the tape drive manufacturer). Appendix 'D' of
the 'Messages' guide is indicated below.

The 3580 LTO hardware guide will also shed some light on what the EN, CC, KEY,
ASC, and ASCQ errors mean for that particular drive.

>From my experience with the DLT drives, the 'locate' error usually occured if
a drive was reset, powered off, or received a SCSI bus reset, before the
cartridge was physcially unloaded. The drive would load the tape table of
contents into its memory, then write the TOC at the front of the tape when
unloaded (either a SCSI command, or front panel unload).

Have you seen any SCSI errors, had power problems, or premature unloads from
your drives? Has this particular tape indicated a problem before?

There is also a way to diagnose the Sense codes in the Ultrium Device Driver
Installation and Users Guide. All available online.

The library error is a little tougher, but may be found in the 3583 Maintenance
guide.

good luck.

If we could just convince TSM development to release the tsm.devices
as opensource it would be quite simple to rebuild the drivers for other
kernel versions (and different linux distributions).

What you should do is this:

DEFINE PATH CAADSTAR LB6.0.0.2 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=LIBRARY

or do:

I tried to set up the library in TSM the same as before the restore. I
deleted the paths then redefined using the same info that's in the devcfg.
I can set it up in TSM to look like it did before but when I try to use it
TSM says that drive is not available. The devcfg is a backup from before
the restore and looks to be correct. If I look at the device in the
management console it already has the LB6.0.0.3 defined.

DEFINE PATH CAADSTAR LB6.0.0.2 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=LIBRARY
DEVICE=lb6.0.0.2 ONLINE=YES
DEFINE PATH CAADSTAR MT4.0.0.2 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=DRIVE
LIBRARY=LB6.0.0.2 DEVICE=mt4.0.0.2 ONLINE=YES
DEFINE PATH CAADSTAR MT5.0.0.2 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=DRIVE
LIBRARY=LB6.0.0.2 DEVICE=mt5.0.0.2 ONLINE=YES

This is the devcfg that is in the current server1 dir. The management
console comes up with a device LB6.0.0.3

Thanks

Re: wrong device name after restore

2003-12-11 Thread Don Flathau
I tried to set up the library in TSM the same as before the restore. I
deleted the paths then redefined using the same info that's in the devcfg.
I can set it up in TSM to look like it did before but when I try to use it
TSM says that drive is not available. The devcfg is a backup from before
the restore and looks to be correct. If I look at the device in the
management console it already has the LB6.0.0.3 defined.

DEFINE PATH CAADSTAR LB6.0.0.2 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=LIBRARY
DEVICE=lb6.0.0.2 ONLINE=YES
DEFINE PATH CAADSTAR MT4.0.0.2 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=DRIVE
LIBRARY=LB6.0.0.2 DEVICE=mt4.0.0.2 ONLINE=YES
DEFINE PATH CAADSTAR MT5.0.0.2 SRCTYPE=SERVER DESTTYPE=DRIVE
LIBRARY=LB6.0.0.2 DEVICE=mt5.0.0.2 ONLINE=YES

This is the devcfg that is in the current server1 dir. The management
console comes up with a device LB6.0.0.3

Thanks
Don

Re: tape drive errors

2003-12-11 Thread Prather, Wanda
Another thing to check:

If you are at TSM 5.x, do : q path * f=d
If you are at TSM 4.x, do: q drive * f=d

Check to make sure the /dev/rmtx numbers in the PATH definitions match what
you see from AIX lsdev.

If there has been any recabling, you can have that problem where AIX
renumbers the tape drives, but the TSM path definitions point to the old
numbers..

I just had this same error on a AIX 5.1 using a 3494 tape lib with 3590E
drives.

we found that the only solution that worked was to delete and redefine the
device description in the AIX environment. you can also try cycling your
server.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 12/11/03 02:47PM >>>
We have a shared 3584 LTO library. We are getting the following errors:

Was logged as a hardware problem but may need to open it up as a TSM
problem. No errors show up with "errpt -a" on the AIX server.

12/11/03 13:13:36 ANR8779E Unable to open drive /dev/rmt3, error
number=6.
12/11/03 13:20:41 ANR8779E Unable to open drive /dev/rmt5, error
number=6.

ANR8779E

Explanation - The drive cannot be opened by the server. In AIX, error
number is the value of errno returned by the operating system.

System Action - The transaction needing the drive fails.

User Response - User error number in conjunction with operating system
documentation to narrow the scope of the cause. Inspect the drive. Ensure
the dirve is powered on and ready, the cables are properly connected and
terminated and that the device is properly configured to the operating
system.

The drives have been cleaned, power cycled, etc.

Has anyone seen this or have any ideas?

First thing, run lsdev and make sure AIX sees the drives as AVAILABLE, not
just DEFINED.

If they aren't available to AIX, they won't be available to TSM.
If they show up as DEFINED, run cfgmgr to see if you can get them back
online to AIX.

Re: Windows Scripts

2003-12-11 Thread Prather, Wanda
I'm convinced perl is the best way to go.
At the current level of perl that you can download from ActiveState,
perl doesn't require ANY .dlls to be installed!

That means you can install it on ONE machine, and execute it on another via
a network share.

OR, install it and the TSM admin client on your PC and run it there if you
have to!

Hi All,

Anyone know of a good repository of native win2k cmd scripts for
doing various TSM functions? I am particularly interested in a script
that checks for full copypool volumes that are inside a library, issues
checkout commands (and does the reply), and updates the tapes' access to
offsite.

I have written this script in perl on AIX, but the Windows servers I

looking at for this.

Any code, pointers, tips, reference sites would be greatly appreciated!

Hi good tips is.
IDG have release a extremly good book with name
"The BIG Guide about DOS". Or something like that. I just have the
Swedish version.
But in there you can find many commands who is standard in all DOS
versions (included all Windows NT versions).
I have wrote many scripts for Windows who does everything from
installing softwares on 50 servers at the same time to check customers
TSM Servers and send a email to our support email.

Re: Windows Scripts

2003-12-11 Thread Tab Trepagnier
Steve,

Don't limit yourself to command scripts. Look into VB Script. The
combination of VB Script (VBS) and Windows Script Host (WSH) gives you
access to a much more "precise" scripting environment along with access to
other Windows script interfaces such as ADO (ActiveX Data Objects), CDO
(Collaborative Data Objects), etc., plus the COM components of any
applications installed on your PC such as Internet Explorer or MS Office
apps. All of that is unavailable via the standard Windows batch
interface. I've been a big batch file writer since DOS 3.0, but I've
spent the last year or so learning VBS / WSH, and the combination feels
"liberating."

I suggest you explore it before committing to batch files.

Subject:Windows Scripts

Hi All,

Anyone know of a good repository of native win2k cmd scripts for
doing various TSM functions? I am particularly interested in a script
that checks for full copypool volumes that are inside a library, issues
checkout commands (and does the reply), and updates the tapes' access to
offsite.

I have written this script in perl on AIX, but the Windows servers I
help out with do not have perl installed, so .cmd files is what I am
looking at for this.

Any code, pointers, tips, reference sites would be greatly appreciated!

No, we just stopped fixing tapes Luckily we have had no tape problems so
everything is working fine. I believe that the problem is still there and we
have just been very lucky.

HI Guys

Mark, did you ever get this problem solved, 'cuase I'm now sitting with a
similar problem?

When I attempt to read data of a cartridge with a bad block, the server goes
belly up.

I've upgrade from 5.1.5.0 to 5.1.8.0, along with the device driver. I'm sure
this problem only started after the drive firmware was upgraded to 36U3, as
we had no problem when we were on 35V0, in fact we upgraded to 35V0 to solve
an issue where we had numerous tapes being marked as having 1000's of bad
blocks, but after upgrading the firmware, the tapes were fine, with no
errors up 'til now.

3584 with 3 drives,
library firmware 3480,
drive firmware 36U3,
library driver 5.0.6.5,
Adsmscsi.sys 5.1.8.3,
Windows 2000 SP4

Anyone ever seen or have a solution for this?

Problem: TSM server is "blue screening" every couple of hours after a drive
replacement and firmware, software drivers updated for library and all
drives.

We are currently at IBM 3584 library with 6 drives, Library firmware v.
3300, drive firmware v. 36U3, drive software driver (ibmtape.sys) v.
5.0.5.4, library software driver (ibmchgr.sys) v. 5.0.5.4, Adsmscsi.sys

Management Server for Windows - Version 5, Release 1, Level 6.3

Microsoft Knowledge Base Article - 287582

SYMPTOMS
After you install Tivoli Storage Manager software on a computer that is
running Windows 2000 Server, you may receive the following blue screen error
message when you restart the computer:
STOP: 0x00B8 (0x,0x,0x,0x)
ATTEMPTED_SWITCH_FROM_DPC

CAUSE
This issue can be caused by the Adsmscsi.sys driver in Storage Manager. If
you analyze the dumpfile, you see that the Tivoli Storage Manager driver is
calling KeDelayExecutionThread inside of a deferred procedure call (DPC).

RESOLUTION (gotta love this?)
To work around this issue, start the computer in Safe mode, which prevents
the driver from loading, and then disable the following Tivoli services:
*   TSM Scheduler
*   TSM Server1
*   ADSM Server
After you stop these services, restart the computer.

To resolve this issue, visit the following Tivoli Web site to obtain an
updated Windows 2000-compatible version of Storage Manager software:

Any help is appreciated.

TSM on Linux for large sites? Was: TSM on AIX now, platform changecoming?

2003-12-11 Thread Werner Baur
Deon George schrieb:
Have you consider TSM on Linux on Intel?

I just assisted a university change from AIX with 3590 to Linux (cant
remember the IBM model of server) with 4560 (2 x 4560/LTO1 with 4 drives).
This Uni is probably smaller than you guys - but non the less they are
quite happy with the change...

Interesting! Right now we have installed 4 TSM Servers on 2 linux boxes
(XEON 2,8 GHz DP) and 8 x LTO II FC tape drives. While our main
production servers (10 x TSM 5.1) are still running on AIX 4.2 (2 x S7A
with lots of 3590 drives), the new system is gaining ground and it
behaves itself very properly.
Next year we are going to replace all TSM Servers on AIX, libraries and
tape drives included.
We are considering very seriously to switch completely to linux. The
idea is to use roughly a dozen of machines for about two dozens of TSM
servers. The machines will share the storage resources (tape and disk)
in a storage area network.
One of the major problems we see with linux as tsm server platform is
that you forced to use a well-defined but very restricted range of linux
flavors which is supported by IBM. For example, we would like to use
Suse9 which is our standard system for all our linux serves but are
pinned to SLES 8 if we want to get support from IBM any longer.
Does anybody else consider Linux for large TSM environments or has
already experiences with it?

TSM Operational Reporter

2003-12-11 Thread Greyling Leigh
HI Guys

I'm struggling with the Operational Reporter again.

Why, oh why, if the fact that the summary table data is known to be
unreliable, do so many scripts in the Operational Reporter query the summary
table?

I'm now sitting with management jumping up and down because their report
states that several servers were not backed up, when in fact they were.

If I query the summary table for one of the nodes, the last entry is as
follows:

I just did two upgrades like this. One was from AIX 5.1/TSM 5.1.7.0 to
AIX 5.2/TSM 5.2.1, and the second was AIX 4.3.3/TSM 5.1.7.0 to
AIX 5.2/TSM 5.2.1. Note, however, that the upgrade of TSM from 4.2 to 5.2
might take a long time (for DB conversion and cleanup). This would be a
good reason to upgrade TSM to 5.1.7, and run the cleanup prior to
upgrading to 5.2 (TSM).

The TSM Technical Guide redbook is your full guide to ODBC and

Multiple TSM Servers/Informix restore

2003-12-11 Thread Willem Roos
Hi list,

May i pick your collective brain?

We have multiple TSM Servers (called TSM_SERVER, SAPPROD and SAPQAS).
TSM_SERVER owns the 3584, SAPPROD and SAPQAS are library clients.

When we wish to restore an Informix database backed up on SAPPROD to
SAPQAS, our local friendly TSM support company has advised us to

1) backup tsm db on SAPPROD,
2) restore SAPPROD's tsm db to SAPQAS
3) copy ixbar file
4) and restore

However, i have this strange feeling that TSM_SERVER is now getting
terribly confused between SAPPROD (on sapprod) and SAPPROD (on sapqas)
and starts messing up tape [dis]mount requests etc.

What do you think?

Many thanks in advance,

Re: ODBC driver

2003-12-11 Thread Pole, Stephen
Hi Peter,

Try this. NOTE it is for V5R1

The installation package is available from the FTP server
  ftp.software.ibm.com.

Directory:

/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/client/v5r1/Windows/WinNT/v51
6

Files:

  IP22660_ODBC.EXE ODBC driver install image
  IP22660_ODBC_README.TXTODBC driver README file
  IP22660_ODBC_README.FTPThis README file

When downloading the files, be sure to download the *.EXE file in BINARY
  mode.

Before installing the TSM ODBC driver, it is highly recommended that you
read the ODBC driver README file, which includes install instructions and
  other important information.

After downloading the files, see section "Installing the ODBC Driver" in
the
README file for instructions on how to install the driver.

Hope this has helped you. BTW it works a treat!

Cheers

Stephen Pole

Re: TSM 4.2 on AIX 5.2?

2003-12-11 Thread Richard van Denzel
I don't want to install an ancient version. Cust. has got it running now
on AIX 4.3.3 and we want to upgrade to AIX 5.2 before upgrading TSM to
5.2.2.
