Windows 2003 client, system object and TSM server 5.1.x.x
Hi, We are running a 5.1.6.2 TSM server and 5.1.6.2 Client. Up to now we have only backed up NT4 and windows 2000 Clients. We have just begun deploying Windows 2003 Active Directory and Windows 2003 servers. I am researching the level of support in TSM 5.1.6.2 for Windows 2003. It would appear that Windows 2003 IS supported. However, I came across the following: Windows 2003 System State and System Services backups require a TSM 5.2.0 or higher server on the client requirements document on the web, and in the Readme. This would indicate limited support for Windows 2003, particularly Domain controller/ Active Directory backup with 5.1 server. Do I need to upgrade to TSM server 5.2? What level of support exists in 5.1? Should I use a 5.2 client with 5.1 server? TIA Pat ** The contents of this e-mail and possible associated attachments are for the addressee only. AW: /usr/tivoli contents disappear ?
Hi, even thought I am on Windows 2000, the +ACI-feature+ACI- I can see here might be caused by similar tsm code: (w2K Server with tsm client 5.2.2:) +ACI-tsm+ACI- directory: ALL user access rights for ALL users get occassionaly lost. (ACL+ALQ-s remain there, but all access rights are set to +ADw-empty+AD4-) If it happens at all then it happens shortly(?) or immediately(?) after the end of either a scheduled backup or after a check for schedule. And no, there is no postschedule.cmd defined. I only saw it on 2 servers and only occasionaly, it remains dubious, I have neither an explanation nor a solutions, only workarounds. While there are differencies to your problem, the common thing is that tsm directory has dubious problems while the rest of the file system has none. ??? regards Juraj salak -Urspr+APw-ngliche Nachricht- Von: Richard Mochnaczewski +AFs-mailto:RichardM+AEA-INVERA.COM+AF0- Gesendet: Montag, 27. I've had this happen before. Here are the notes I jotted down for the next time it happens: Troubleshooting problems. The servers communicate to eachother through an encrypted password. Re: Windows 2003 client, system object and TSM server 5.1.x.x
Pat, You need to be running at least W2K to run ITSM5.2 on your server. For me.. Bad news!! If you run the V5.1.7.0 client, it is compatible with your server @ 5.1.6.2 and has been updated recently to backup the System State and System Services correctly. It works fine for me and saved me a major headache!!! Check your IBM fixes bulletin!!! Re: Empty Virtual volumes
As long as the volumes have an access mode of OFFSITE they will not return to the scratch pool. Update the access mode to readwrite and the volumes will return to the scratch pool. Adding 3592's to a 3494
We have a 3494 with 3 3590 tape drives, TSM 5.2.2 on AIX 5. We will be adding 5 new 3592 tape drives to the 3494, also for use with TSM. To implement those new 3592 tape drives with TSM, is it sufficient to just define new drives device classes pointing to the same TSM library definition? Storport or SCSIport drivers in W2K3?
Hi there I've got to set up a Windows 2003 TSM server to access some SAN-based tape drives. When installing the drivers for the (Emulex) HBAs I have a choice between two different driver models - the Storport drivers and the SCSIport drivers. I've always used SCSIport drivers on Windows 2000, but the Storport drivers for Windows 2003 are supposed to offer better performance. Anybody got any experience with Storport drivers, especially with TSM, who would like to share their opinions? Regards Neil Schofield Yorkshire Water Services Ltd. Re: Server Stanzas
You probably already looked at this, but could it be TCPServerAddress? I've never actually used multiple stanzas for a Windows client before; we always just set up multiple optfiles. But we've never wanted data managed separately that way to back up to the same node, either, so we've never really needed to. Good luck! Kathleen Gill, Geoffrey L. Hi, Two tapes are in vault status but are empty, they cannot be seen in q vol. What is the procedure in changing the status to vault retrieve? Thank you.
Re: NDMP Backups
Good question Joni, Our NetApp admins are very hotheavy to get us to use NDMP for our filer backups, as opposed to the backup the NFS/CIFS mount way we are currently doing it. Because of CIFS slowness, on Windows q-trees the backups take way too long. I totally agree that the NDMP backups and restores will be faster, but that improvement doesn't come without some tradeoffs. Your post highlights one of the reasons I'm reluctant to switch to NDMP. These are the things about NDMP that make me nervous. They may be unfounded or wrong, so anybody feel free to jump in and correct me: - Need for attachment between the NetApp and a tape device. Yes it can be resolved with I-SCSI, facilitation of FC connections or SCSI lines, or purchasing tape drives, but it's an added expense to our current environment. - As far as I can see, there is no way to make the second copy (short of doing a second NDMP dump to a different storage pool/TSM server), so it compromises our DR ability. - With NDMP, we go back to the full/diff/incr backup system, meaning we will have to do periodic full backups which will retain more data in TSM. On some of these large volumes with long retentions, this could be a LOT more data in TSM depending on how often we do a full. - TSM currently only supports NDMP at the volume level. On volumes were we have multiple Q-trees requiring different data retentions, there is no way to separate them. You have to keep the whole volume for longest retention. Our NetApp admins point to other backup solutions (i.e. bakbone) that seem to be ahead of TSM in NDMP support and they want to use those products, but I don't want to support another backup application Like I said, I may be totally off-base here so feel free to chime in and tell me I'm wrong. I don't have an answer for you, but in 3 weeks, we will be doing just that. I'm thinking we will need to define a new devclass, drives, paths then storagepools but I was hoping/thinking that the library device would just remain the same. I'll let you know in about 3 weeks unless you are doing your upgrade before then. If you are upgrading before me, please let me know what you find out. Re: Adding 3592's to a 3494
When we upgraded we needed a new library defined in TSM to use the 3592's with different private/scratch categories, and device class's, drives, etc.. Not a different 'logical' library defined on the 3494 library manager. That may have worked too, but it depends on how particular you want to be as to which drives/slots are available to each host connected to the library. 3592's have been good. So far after 9 months use of 500 tapes and 6 drives. 2 tapes had I/O problems, no serious problem in data lost, TSM's 'restore volume' cleaned it up in minutes. some drives have just needed code upgrades to remove minor problems. One had 'clean me' displayed permanantly, it went way after that. One was replaced, but it was bad from the factory on initial installation. Try to do the code upgrades for the drives from the Host's fiber/scsi. When the IBM SE pushed it via the Library manager it took hours instead of minutes. The web interface on the upgraded library manager is great! No longer do you have to login to the library manager console to find out why 'operator intervention' is required... You can check it from your desk and decide to call in IBM to fix the problem or just unload the tapes that wanted to come out of the I/O slots. My biggest issue is that the server we have connected to those 6 drives can't push data fast enough to them, they can go much faster! Matthew Glanville Eastman Kodak

Hmm... Another new library definition vote. In my case, I will be upgrading 1/2 of the drives to 3592, migrating all the data to the new format and then upgrading the rest of the 3590s. In the end, it will all look the same except I have new drives. Won't I be OK having the 3590 and 3592 drives in the same scratch and private categories? The TSM server is smart enough to know which scratch tapes can go in which drives... No? Is that a wrong assumption on my part? Richard Sims Hi, As Richard said there is no concept of server stanza for windows clients (BTW Servername options go in the dsm.sys file on unix machines). What you can do is create different dsm.opt files, i.e. dsm_adsm.opt and dsm_west.opt and then prior to you invoking the command you can set an environment variable DSM_CONFIG to point at the correct file. Also, there are DSM_DIR and DSM_LOG variables as well for obvious reasons. For more information consult the Admin Guide. I hope that helps. -- Regards, Mark D. INACCESSIBLE_BOOT_DEVICE and Windows File Protection
A Win2k system of ours had to be rebuilt because of a bad stripe entry in the bad stripe table. We did a base install of win2k (however looking back realized we didnt install any sp's on our base installation of windows, and the one that was being restored had SP3). We restored the files first, and then the system objects. Upon a reboot after restoring the system objects we received inaccessible_boot_device. We repeated this process trying the base install with the same version raid driver that was in backup. Before the reboot once the system object restore finished, I checked the event log and noticed (among other entries) that windows file protection was not allowing ipsraidn.sys to be overwritten with version 4.5.000 from backup, but was keeping the 3.0 driver that was there. 4.5 I know is what we needed. After going to a recovery console and replacing this driver with one from backup, our system finally booted. Why wasn't the file overwritten? (obviously because WFP replaced it, but tsm has to take this into account I would imagine, so what did I do wrong?) Thanks, Adam - Web mail provided by NuNet, Inc. Re: More tapes required than space in library
My advice would be to not collocate your copy storage pools. This way, you use far less tapes for your copies. I am using collocation and there will be atleast 15 tapes required for normal operations at any one night. I have a total space of 23 volumes in library. How do I cope with the situation when I would need to backup the primary storage pool and dbbackups for DRM, i.e. I would need atleast 31 tapes at a time in library for DRM purposes. Please discuss !!! Sandra
Re: More tapes required than space in library
And if you have 15 clients and are collocating your primary tape pool, you still don't need to use 15 tapes. If you set maxscratch to 8, TSm will stack your clients 2 per tape. You get most of the benefits of collocation, but can support more clients than you have slots in the library. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Curtis Stewart Sent: Thursday, September 30, 2004 4:45 PM To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Subject: Re: More tapes required than space in library My advice would be to not collocate your copy storage pools. ? appropriate Throughput Thresholds w/ 10-100Mb TSM clients?
Recently, the AIX 5.1 host for our busiest TSM 5.2.3.0 service, has been running at 100% CPU for most of the night, some mornings and even into some afternoons. We have discovered a few of our clients (using inappropriate network settings, typically Auto-Dectect instead of matching the network switch...) have poor performing, very long running backup sessions that are exhausting the CPU. TSM provides two server options: ThroughputTimeThreshold = MMM [seconds] ThroughputDataThreshold = NNN [KB/sec] to be set causing the TSM service to cancel any client session that does not perform better than NNN KB/sec after MMM seconds. Has anyone determined appropriately conservative settings for these options with TSM client network connections varying from 10Mb,Half-Duplex up to 100Mb,Full-Duplex? We're aiming to kill the network mis-matched clients and don't want to suffer with them for too long, but we don't want to kill a client that might be legitimately slowly progressing through a huge directory. Please respond if you've already solved this problem satisfactorily at your site. Thanks for your help. -- [EMAIL PROTECTED] (203.432.6693)
Re: Storport or SCSIport drivers in W2K3?
Actually there is 3 types of drivers, SCSCI Port Miniport, Storport, and FC Port . We have always used the FC Port drivers. I blieve the difference is that with FC Port you can set up persistant binding. At least that is what the description by the LP1 drivers show (see below): So far I believe Storport has really been taken advantage of in the disk world although it is supposed to work with tape. To see an MS demo on the Storeport go to http://www.microsoft.com/seminar/shared/asp/view.asp?url=/seminar/en/20020624WinHecD8a/manifest.xml SCSIport Miniport Driver - Provides SCSI functionality over Fibre Channel arbitrated loop, point-to-point and fabric topologies. 32-bit and 64-bit Storport Miniport Drivers - Provides SCSI/FCP functionality over Fibre Channel arbitrated loop, point-to-point and fabric topologies. 32-bit and 64-bit FC Port Drivers - Provides SCSI-only or concurrent SCSI and IP functionality within a single HBA or several HBAs. Designed for specialized applications where host based LUN mapping and persistent binding of SCSI device IDs are required. Anybody got any experience with Storport drivers, especially with TSM, who would like to share their opinions? Regards Neil Schofield Yorkshire Water Services Ltd. Thanks for the replies. Hunny Kershaw wrote: Currently, the TSM device driver does not support Storport drivers. If I can't use TSMSCSI.SYS with Storport drivers, it will definitely be SCSIport drivers for me. Anybody know if and when Storport support might be introduced for the TSM device driver? I blieve the difference is that with FC Port you can set up persistant binding. We are using persistent bindings with the SCSIPort drivers. It's not done natively in the Emulex driver (LPXNDS.SYS). You have to use the Emulex 'adjunct' or 'value-add' driver LPXFTR.SYS to provide this functionality. I believe the same is true with the Emulex Storport driver too. I will definitely have some accessing disk, some accessing tape and possibly some accessing both. Ideally they would all use the same model - either SCSIport or Storport - but perhaps that's asking too much. Thanks again for responding.
