Hi, what type of tape is it ? Imation, IBM... ?

When did you get them, 2003 or sooner ?

We have to replace all Imation tapes delivered between 2001 and 2002 !! At
about one third of the tape, we get the tape in r/o by TSM because of EOD
missing and write errors.

Subject: Corrupted LTO CM Index

I ran into this problem big time a couple weeks ago and Dave Canan posted an
excellent note about the corrupted index on LTO cartridges. Since then I've
had a couple tapes become corrupted. After the incident, I checked out all
my tapes and checked them in with CHECKLABEL=YES. This identified all the
tapes with existing corrupted index chips with the TAPEALERT messages. I
then MOVE DATA all these tapes and they were reused. Yesterday again I had a
tape that was checked in with CHECKL=YES that did not indicate a problem,
but this morning after being used as a copypool tape when it was dismounted
it for the ANR8950W message about a corrupted index.

What is causing this corruption?? I have updated the drives and library to
the latest firmware. There were no I/O errors or any other indications of a
problem. Is this tape just bad?? Before we were having SCSI errors on the
motherboard of the x345 server. We believe this caused the corruption, now
I'm not so sure.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Re: read errors on tape, files wont expire

2004-10-04 Thread Henrik Wahlstedt
Have anyone seen that a faulty tape can stop TSM from expire data?!?
dont see how that could possible happen but who knows

Is there some situation inciting the question?

A short answer.
A support organisation suggested to delete a faulty tape. The tape conatins
some TDP files that does not expire like I hoped they would do.
We are now working on other ideas than deleting the tape...

Your client is at a 5.1.5 level. Is there any chance you could
post the results of an instrument detail trace to the listserv? The first
thought that comes to mind is possible disk fragmentation on the PST file
on the client side. This is just a guess, however. An intsrument detail
trace would give us a good place to start.

I backup big Outlook .PST Files directly to tape.
When TSM starts to backup big files (300MB) I see on the AIX server
with topas a
throughput of up to 24M (readch/writech).
But in the middle of the file it drops to as low as 3000K.
CPU utilisation drops from 60% to 15%. No Wait at any time.

I'm not very familiar with performance on AIX because our TSM server was

Has anyone seen this before?

Hello

Problem with a TDP backup of a 200gb+ SQL database

SQLserver2000 running on Windows NT
TSM Client 4.2.2.8
TDP 2.2.1

We run a transaction log backup every 4 hours, which works fine
We run a daily DiffFull backup, which also works fine
The weekly FULL backup produces these error messages:

ACO5059W The C:\TSM\Logs\TdpFull.log log file cannot be opened for writing.
There will be no logging of events.

ACO5422E Received the following from the MS SQL server:
Message text not available. HRESULT:0x800455f3

I have researched this on these pages and the feeling is that i have an
authentication error. On the NT server, the same NT Scheduled Service is
used to backup the transaction logs, difffull and full backups. As the
backups for transaction and difffull are ok, i guess it is'nt the account
named in the scheduled service. This account has full admin authorities.

Any thoughts?

disk pool sizing (again)?

2004-10-04 Thread Mike
Currently my TSM box backs up about 160-180GB each night. Recently I
purchased enough disk so the entire night's backup can go to disk,
migrate to the tape library (four tape drives). When the disk was
allocated to disk pools it was divided into multiple sections for
the different categories/policies (exchange, database, other, etc.).
There is a simple job running with some frequency to capture the
amount of these disk resources that are currently in use. The disk
resources do not seem to be used consistently or fully.

My question is should I destroy all the individual devices and lump
the devices into one large pool so that the entire night's backup
is written as quickly as possible (then migrated), or should
things stay the same?

Since TSM manages the files written to disk within these disk
devices, then I feel TSM should have the whole shoe box to slice
and dice as it it sees fit, but I don't know

can server-free do this?

2004-10-04 Thread Mike
We have a shark and are looking at getting a fastT. Currently
one platform uses the shark's ability to 'snap' backups. We're
considering doing the same 'snap'ping of backups with the other
two platforms (aix with the shark and intel with the fastT).
If the platform snaps a backup, is there a way through the SAN
fabric to mount that filesystem (difficult for intel I think)
directly to the tsm server (AIX) so the tsm server reads the
files instead of using a tsm client on the client nodes?

I'm thinking that if I can even mount the intel filesystem (NTFS)
that I must backup the filesystem using blocks rather than files.

Hi all,

I am currently at a disaster recovery test and am having a problem
finding my TSM DB tape. The DRM plan is calling for a tape that doesn't
appear to be here. I just upgraded a month ago to tsm 5.1.9 (AIX

Thanks,

Windows NT4 and TSM client

2004-10-04 Thread Tyree, David
We have some older WinNT4 servers still hanging around and I
want to update them to the newest possible TSM client.

All of our newer Win2k and Win2k3 servers are running some
flavor of version 5.2+ currently. If I attempt to install that one on a NT4
box I get an error message about wrong OS version. I looked over the docs
for 5.2.x and found that NT4 was no longer supported.

I've looked around on the Tivoli site and the docs but I can't
find the last version of TSM that will install on a WinNT4 box. I have a
couple running 5.1.5.2.

Is that the last one for WinNT4?

Re: Msgs ACO5059W and ACO5422E

2004-10-04 Thread Del Hoobler
Jeff,

I haven't seen this specific HRESULT code before.
I also don't see this message in SQL Server error codes,
(HRESULT converted 55F3 = 55F0 + 3 = 22000 + 3).
This may be a case where the SQL Server hit an unexpected error
and passed that back to Data Protection for SQL (resulting in
the Message text not available. message.)
If this continues, a Data Protection for SQL trace
will help narrow this one further. You may also want
to look around at the VDI error log and Application Event Log.
Go here for some other ideas for problem determination:

http://publib.boulder.ibm.com/tividd/td/TSMM/SC32-9103-00/en_US/HTML/index.html

Look under the Data Proection for SQL category.
You can also call IBM support to help guide you through
getting a trace and sending it in for diagnosis.

Thanks,

Del

We run a transaction log backup every 4 hours, which works fine
We run a daily DiffFull backup, which also works fine
The weekly FULL backup produces these error messages:

ACO5059W The C:\TSM\Logs\TdpFull.log log file cannot be opened for

There will be no logging of events.

ACO5422E Received the following from the MS SQL server:
 Message text not available. HRESULT:0x800455f3

I have researched this on these pages and the feeling is that i have an
authentication error. On the NT server, the same NT Scheduled Service is
used to backup the transaction logs, difffull and full backups. As the
backups for transaction and difffull are ok, i guess it is'nt the

 Any thoughts?

Eliminating copy storage pool

2004-10-04 Thread David Browne
Our Storage Administrator asked if we could do away with our offsite copy
storage pool. They would duplex our current onsite backups on a VTS,
the backend 9840 tapes would be sent offsite, eliminating the need for
TSM's copy--storage-pool processing.

Has anyone done this before or have any thoughts on that?

Question about four TSM-servers sharing together a 3494-library

2004-10-04 Thread Mike Hagery
Hello,
TSM-servers 5.1.7.3 on AIX 5.2.0.2, 3494-library with 9 drives.
We already have a setup for library-sharing between two servers sharing one
3494-library with 9 drives. Now we are thinking of spliting one tsm-server
in three logical tsm-servers and spread them also over three physical
machines. So besides the already configured library-client, we want to
configure two more library-clients on two different machines.
After I setup server-to-server communications, and want to define a shared
library on the library-client; I get authentication errors.
On the library manager there was one other server defined. Now I defined a
second one. On the library-clients I defined also an other-server
(library-manager), on both library clients the same other-server definition
for the library-manager, with the exception of the password.
Is it necessary to use the same serverpassword in all the other-server
definitions on the library-client and -manager or can I f.i. use the
cross-define option on the library-manager when defining an other-server for
the client to communicate?
Any hints or tips are very welcome.
Thanx,
Mike

Anyway, to clarify the client need, once a particular file is deleted from a
particular network workstation, he merely wants to make it impossible for that
file--which was previously backed up--to be restored back to the original location
from the backup tape. Fortunately, he doesn't care whatever method I use to prevent
the file from being restored. If it's as simple as having the application take a
selected file and scripting dsmc to do an immediate expiration, he will be happy.

Meanwhile, I have to wait for him to have someone forward me the technote you

I'm working on a project where the client wants to have individual files
deleted from backups in TSM 5.2 0.0; his organization does not use
archives. ...

Welcome to the product, and the List, Brian.

From time to time we see postings like this from client customers who
spring for a big, expensive product like TSM and then completely ignore
what it's all about, seeking instead to have it do things which are
contrary to its nature. Very much a Dilbert P.H.B. scenario.

That client may not use Archives, but obviously should for this
expressed need. You can otherwise try to bend the product to make
it do what they want, but I doubt that anyone involved in the effort
will be happy with the result.

Stay away from anything which is not a standard, supported part of
the product, which is to say Delete Object. There are procedural
alternatives: one is found in the IBM site Technote 1166278, How
to remove a single file from a TSM backup tape volume. But not
trivial. Another approach is to employ limited retentions for
Inactive files and then do 'dsmc EXPire'; or do a selective backup
on an empty surrogate file to push the real data out of existence
in the TSM storage pool; or just Exclude the file to incite its
expiration.

Overall, though, I don't get the sense that the client has fully
defined EXACTLY what they want to achieve. A file not in the Backup
storage pool implies that the file is no longer in the originating
file system - which doesn't seem like the situation they'd have (but
which is the inherent, most simple way that files expire out of TSM).

That client obviously does not understand what backup means, or
perhaps care. Archive was created for what they want to do.
Have them define their requirements in detail, and then outline
the aspects of the product which meet their needs. Beyond that,
a whole different methodology - and perhaps product - would be
called for.

retained based on a time interval after the occurrence of a

2004-10-04 Thread Rick Saylor
When I moved my TSM server to another machine I just copied the database,
logs and config files to the new machine. I used NFS but you can use tape,
CD, DVD - whatever is convenient. I'm pretty sure I installed the new TSM
server first and then overwrote the dsmserv.dsm, dsmserv.opt,
Volume_History and Device_Configuration files that the installation process
created with the ones from my old server. The old server will need to be
down when you copy the database and logs. If you made the mount points for
the database and logs the same you can bring TSM up and check it out. Once
you're happy with the new installation then connect up your tape library
and you're good to go.
Another option is to try our you're disaster recovery procedures and try to
restore and rebuild your TSM server on the new machine.
Hope this helps

I have on the old machine SSA Disks and on the new machine I have ESS disks
over SAN! It is impossible to migrate VG from one machine to another! I am
wondering is it possible to ran two servers in the same time to share same
library. I have 3584 library with six LTO 3584 drives!

Thanks

Depends on your disk

-we installed base TSM on a new machine
- brought over the config files
- moved the SSA disk holding the storage pools and DB
- and came up

Hi,

please does anyone have step-by-step procedure for moving TSM from one
machine to another. I am planning to move TSM to faster machine and I
would
be thankful if someone can help me!
Platforms are:
Source machine AIX 5.1 TSM 5.1.8.0
Destination machineAIX 5.2 TSM 5.2.2.0

Re: Deleting backup files/API from Visual Basic

2004-10-04 Thread Steve Harris
Brian,

So we need a managementclass for this file or files only which specifies a copygroup
with the properties

vere whatever
verd 0
rete whatever
reto 0

Update the include-exclude list for this file or files on the workstation so that it
picks up the new managementclass.

After the file is deleted, and the next backup is run to detect that this has
happened, the following expiration will discard all backup copies of the file, as your
user has requested. I daresay that at this point he will ask you to restore it, such
is the nature of users :)

Thanks for your call above the line of duty service. I believe what goes around
comes around with the caveat but not always in the way you expect! in terms of how
it gets back to you, so I try to help and volunteer in other subjects I have more
expertise in to keep the cycle going.

Meanwhile, I have to wait for him to have someone forward me the technote you
suggested since I don't have the IBM number--GR! But at least I can rephrase the
question to How do I prevent a single file from being restorable?

Thanks again,

Subject: Re: Deleting backup files/API from Visual Basic

Beyond that,
a whole different methodology - and perhaps product - would be
called for.

Hi all,

I have Version 5, Release 1, Level 9.4 can somebody explain to me

Storage DeviceEstimated Pct Pct High Low Next
Pool Name Class Name CapacityUtilMigrMig Mig Storage
 (MB)Pct Pct Pool
--- -- -- - - --- ---
DASD-NAS DISK 63 G99.2 0.0 0 0 3494NAS
DASDFSDISK 18 G 0.0 0.0 60 0 3494FS
DASDHSM DISK 19 G13.9 0.2 5030 3494HSM

pct util : is this the cache or the actual disk

pct migr : is this the actual disk or the percentage migrated to tapes

for example DASD-NAS has a pct util of 99.2 so meaning .. it means that it's full but
I dunno what is full
either the disk is full or the cache is full ? somebody please explain to me the
meaning of the table ... above

Thanks
