Tape Recovery Questions

2004-12-28 Thread PEEK, CHRISTOPHER
We had an UPS failure in the data center. When the UPS failed, it
immediately disconnected power to all devices in the data center. At
the time of the failure, there were 3 tapes being written to in our 3583
library. After the UPS was repaired, I brought everything back online.
TSM marked the three tapes as having an I/O error (no shock here) and
wrote the following type message to the log for each tape:

12/17/04 05:07:29 ANR8355E I/O error reading label for volume 223AHV
in dri
   ve DRIVE2 (/dev/rmt2). (SESSION: 383, PROCESS:
18)
12/17/04 05:08:01 ANR8778W Scratch volume 223AHV changed to Private
Status
   to prevent re-access. (SESSION: 383, PROCESS: 18)

Now, my question is how to recover from this. I have tried to identify
what was on the tapes so that I may recover it from other tape pools, or
maybe discard it if not necessary to rebuild it. However, the tapes are
not assigned to any storage pools so the "query volume" and "query
content" commands are not working.

Any suggestions on what to do next to identify what is on the tapes?

HI,

in such case (scratch tape updated in private by TSm), we just do a checkout
remove=no, then a label overwrite=yes or checkin as scratch.

Christopher - Review your Activity Log. It would seem that the involved
tapes had been mounted from the Scratch pool, and that the
client-server transaction involved at the time of session interruption
had not completed; and so no data was committed to the tapes.
The crux of the matter is that if the volumes are not in a storage pool,
then TSM believes there is no data on them, and nothing you can do will
make available any partial data which had been in progress at the time.

Re: Tape Recovery Questions

2004-12-28 Thread Prather, Wanda
If they aren't assigned to a storage pool, there is no valid data on
them, so no recovery is necessary.

When TSM has a problem completing a mount, it doesn't know whether the
problem is with the tape or the drive.
So it marks the tape private to prevent a repetitive failure on the next
mount, in case the problem is indeed the tape itself.

Since you know the problem was with the drive (i.e., it had no power!)
and not the tape, all you need to do is mark it as Scratch again:

update libv yourlibname 223AHV status=scratch

missed backup files because of virus scanner

2004-12-28 Thread Timothy Hughes
Hello,

We just found out that one of our Novell clients has a
Virus Scanner that is interfering with the nightly TSM
incremental backup of a volume NTOVL1 is causing
many files to be skipped because it's scans files during
the backup and TSM thinks the files are open.

Anyone else ever experienced this problem or something
similar.

LAN free on Solaris to AIX Server using 3494/3590

Hi All,

Is anyone doing LAN Free backups on Solaris to an AIX Server? I have
the Storage Agent connecting fine to the server, but IBMtape on solaris is
not configuring the tape devices. The tapes are properly zones, as cfgadm
reports them. I am using TSM 5.2.1.0 of both ther server and storage
agent, and IBMtape 4.1.0.7.

But after I load IBMtape, it does not find these devices, and therefore, I
get no devices in /dev/rmt which I could then use in my define path
statements on the server.

Any ideas on what I am missing?

Re: Domino TDP command expired 3 of 4 inactive backup versions

2004-12-28 Thread Eduardo Esteban
The incremental commmand inactivates any active database
backups on the TSM server that are excluded from backup.
The dsmtest.opt file inactivates all databases in the
mail directory. Domino databases are stored by their
relative names in the TSM server so relative names
must be used on the include/exclude statements. The
leading '\' should be removed.

The domdsmc archivelog command backups all the logs that
have not yet been archived regardless of the their date.
The Domino server keeps track of which logs have been
archived and passes that information to DP for Domino.

Re: Tape Recovery Questions

2004-12-28 Thread Sandra
dear All,
I am glad to see this question and replies.

Please find the question in the end: I am sorry but need to give you basic idea
of what had happened.

Yesterday i got news from one of my friends using tivoli with in more or less
the same environment as mine.

Tivoli (5.2.3) on windows and 3582 on SAN.

There was a problem on one of the tape drives in library and storage guys turned
it off and on and switched its interfaces to troubleshoot the two tape drives...
it all went on while the TSM server was running.

I asked him to mark that faulty tape drive as offline and continue operation, as
one of you suggested earlier. I should have worked but it didn't and the mesage
said that media mount no possible.

Now as he inserted tapes using Media labeling wizard, the checked in tapes as
scratch do not even show up in "select * from libvolume where status='Scratch'.
Infact these tapes are no where but in library and not in TSM database.

Question:
Can I run "Device configuration wizard" to reconfigure devices, without loosing
anything on tapes that had already been backedup?

Once that faulty tape drive is back again, I can run this wizard again to start
normal operations with 2 tape drives.

Safe or should i try something else? I think logically it shouldn't matter to
TSM.

Kindly enlighten me !

Sandra

Scheduler problem

2004-12-28 Thread Thomas Denier
We are in the progress of migrating our TSM clients to a new 5.2.2.0
server running under mainframe Linux. We just migrated an Intel Linux
client system with 5.2.3.0 client software. The client is not responding
to a request to start an incremental backup. The scheduler log on the
client seems to indicate that the client is fully aware of the pending
request but does not see fit to act on the request. The relevant portion
of the client log appears below:

The client has been running successful backups on our old TSM server,
and a number of other clients have been running successful backups on
our new TSM server. The client that is not responding to the central
scheduler is mildly unusual for our site in that it uses polling rather
than prompted scheduling. A 'query node' command with 'f=d' reveals
one oddity which may be related to the problem: the 'Last Communication
Method Used' field is blank.

Re: Scheduler problem

2004-12-28 Thread Prather, Wanda
Your "queryschedperiod" value appears to be 3 hours.

1) How big is the schedule window? (i.e., duration)
2) What is your randomization %?

(If they are large, this could be correct behavior..)

Hi all,
We have to migrate TSM 5.2 from OS390 to AIX 5.2.Total data is around 20 TB

What will be the best strategy to do this? server to server export import or

Re: Tape Scratch list

2004-12-28 Thread Norita binti Hassan
What I want is a daily scratch list which expire daily, not in a libvol. So
that I can reuse tapes which has been checkout and I don't have to check in
new tapes when my storage pool is out if scratch tapes.

For example by:
"select * from libvolumes where STATUS = 'Scratch'" for a list of all
scratch-volumes
or
"select library_name,count(*) scratch from libvolumes where STATUS =
'Scratch' group by library_name,STATUS" for the number of scratch-volumes
grouped per library
