TSM Linux v5r3 client GUI

Greetings,
We copy our client maintenance from
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/
maintenance/client
I tried installing the Linux86 v530 client and can not invoke DSM. It
doesn't seem to be installed. DSMC works fine.
I went back to v523 and installed that client (and TIVguid and
TIVsm-API.i386) and the GUI runs from that installation.
Has anyone else seen this behavior?
Thanks. John

The only limitation of this kind is with regard to Centera pools. You
cannot migrate data into, or out of, a Centera disk pool (this is
mentioned in the Admin Guide).

I did a simple test of disk - disk migration using my local workstation
disk drives (SATA), and it worked fine.

What do Q STG F=D show and Q PR show at the time migration is running? Did
you examine the activity log for any related messages issued from the time
migration started that might point to a problem?

The storagepool hirarchy should be the following:

 1) Fast small FC Disks (RAID 5) for daily small and medium Files
 next to
 2) ATA Disk (RAID 5) with migdelay = 10 days (daily changed files
should
expire before migration to sequentail pool)
 next to
 3) large ATA squential Pool as last part of the chain and for large,
daily
 Files (TDP full ?)

In my first tests i had trouble with migration from 1 to 2:
mig process were starting, but doing nothing.
The process could not be canceled.
Everything else was ok (1-3, direct -2, 2-3)

I am not sure whether it is possible to do migration from disk to disk.
Anyone had the same experience, TSM bug?

to take effect

Above message appears in dsmshed.log. Is this message and files created
below excpected and all's well ?
Why are these files created and if I were to reboot the Emergency Server
would they disappear. In the past
I have deleted them but I suppose it's the wrong thing to do !

After the restore these files are created on the Domino Server in

I think, all you need to do is to specify the restore command -server
option.
You can try first 'domdsmc q dbb * -server=dominoservername' to verify
that you can see the backups.

Your server Quick Start manual describes the installation of a suite of
sample scripts which are shipped with the TSM server (scripts.smp
file). Numerous examples of good queries can be found in the List
archives. There is also http://www.coderelief.com/depot.htm .
Don't overlook the accounting records as a solid source of data for
periodic reporting. I provide a sample report program at

Using client compression for TDP for Lotus Domino

2005-02-21 Thread Nicolas Savva
Hi to all

I have the following question regarding TDP for Lotus Domino:

I am using client compression when i execute incremental backups via TDP
for Lotus Domino. When my backup is finished i received the statistics on
TSM server's log but there is nothing telling me about the compression.
i.e:

Domino ACD5207 Data Protection for Domino:
Incremental
database backup from server CYMAIL1 complete.
Total
Domino databases backed up: 2502 Total bytes

   transferred: 100256200678 Elapsed processing time:

   12850.34 Secs Throughput rate: 7618.98 Kb/Sec

Where can i see if my backup via TDP for Lotus Domino is compressed as well
as the compression ration?

TDP for Lotus Domino: version 5.1.5
TSM server: version 5.1.5

Thanks

Very nice
Even added the difference in counts. This select is very nice indeed.
I think you over estimated this group about 93 seconds thing..
I tried to combine two selects for over an hour and gave up.

Currently, we have one physical server (RS6k P670, 4 procs, 16GB

or leave it on one physical server (my pref is one physical server). I
would like to hear pros and cons, and what decisions have been made by
other people. Here is a summary of our TSM site:
3 TSM instances
33GB, 48GB, and 40GB Databases
1.25TB backup per night
28TB, 13TB, and 15TB managed (one copy, double for onsite and offsite)
113M, 124M, 140M files managed
Thanks for any info, and if more info is needed from me, let me know.

Using client compression for TDP for Lotus Domino

Where can i see if my backup via TDP for Lotus Domino is compressed as
well
as the compression ration?

TDP for Lotus Domino: version 5.1.5
TSM server: version 5.1.5

Thanks

Restoring Domain controller

2005-02-21 Thread Sandra
Dear All,
I had to restore active directory, and the one which did not have any any other
backup domain controller (This is also our mail server MS Exchange 2000).

What i did was that i installed OS and service packs .. and then simply went
into restoring the server using backups !

1-Restored drive C
2-Restored Drive D
3- Restored System objects

When i restarted the system it didn't comeup instead it remained at the first
white bar of windows loading against black back ground.

I was pretty much confused as to what did i do wrong as i restored everything
and it should have come back.

Anyone any idea on this? I wanted to keep things simple but it sounds like it is
not letting me to be simple .. !

Regards,
Sandra

It appears that the ACD5207I message fails to summarize compression
results.
You are left to sum the Written: values for the included backups and
compare with the Total bytes transferred: value to gauge compression,
then.
Consider filing a problem report to have this information included in
the
backup summary.

Re: Using client compression for TDP for Lotus Domino

2005-02-21 Thread Eduardo Esteban
DP for Domino does not display compression information, but you could
determine the compression ratio by using the dsmadmc command:
query node nodename f=d and use the Bytes Received Last Session
data and compare it to the Total bytes transferred: statistics displayed
by DP for Domino to determine the compression ratio.

Displaying the compression ratio is a known requirement for DP for Domino.

Re: Reclamation problem

2005-02-21 Thread Stapleton, Mark
From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On
Behalf Of Iain Barnetson
Don't know about anyone else but I find the TSM documentation
woefully inadequate, at times misleading, and on at least one
occaission incorrect.

So I hope someone can give the person asking the question a
bit more help the response RTFM

In this particular case, Richard is doing the right thing. There is a
detailed explanation of how to set up tape reclamation when there is
only one tape drive available, and he indicated the correct area of the
administrator's guide. The process is a little complex to be succinctly
described in a mailing-list posting.

TSM documentation is adequate is most instances; granted that there are
a few inaccuracies, but I can't recall any major bloopers in
documentation for the last two or three major releases. The largest
holes in TSM documentation are the same holes that exist in most
application documentation: procedures involving two or more technologies
within an application, and best practices. (Most of these holes are
filled-in with the IBM Redbook series.) Also, the reason RTFM appears
regularly is because many administrators are daunted by the volume of
documentation and don't read the docs. Well, cowboys and cowgirls, you
should be prepared for large amounts of documentation for an application
that is used at the enterprise level.

(If you want to see really poor documentation, take a look at the docs
for some TSM's major competitors.)

Re: Reports in TSM

We can help you better if you tell us what TSM version you are using,
and your server platform.

If you have at least TSM 5.2.2, please look at the documentation for TSM
Operational Reporting, which is in the TSM Administrator's Guide for
your server platform.

There is a very extensive reporting capability already built into the
TSM 5.2.2 server (and above).
You can use it to generate daily reports, mail them, or create HTML
files.

You can also see the SQL queries it issues and modify them to make your
own if needed.

Re: exclude ASR

We are currently implementing a backup your laptop service. One of our
goals is that the user must be able to do everything them selfs and that
we (the admins) have as less work as possible. Another goal is that it
must work over slow connections since most of these users are travelling
and usually on low bandwidth connections.
So we decided to only backup office documents and the like. We enforce
this using client option settings and that all works pretty well. Only
thing is that if a users does a dsmc i it starts backing all these

Re: exclude ASR

2005-02-21 Thread Rushforth, Tim
I think you can just add:
DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL -SYSTEMOBJECT

To your dsm.opt file.

It sounds like you want to exclude the System Object not ASR (it is the
system object that includes all of the system files)

DOMAIN ALL-LOCAL -SYSTEMOBJECT will do the trick. Then when a user does
a dsmc i tsm only backups what is in the domain statement.

Only
thing is that if a users does a dsmc i it starts backing all these
system files because of asr. Which we don't want and is pretty useless

I verified that the define server command used serverpassword= instead of

Re: Select for Tape Storage Pool Report

2005-02-21 Thread Todd Lundstedt
Here's something funny tho...
Sometimes, when I run the script, I get a duplicate (sort of) entry in the
output...

Stg PoolTB PctUtl Logi Run? Recl Max VolUsed Diff
-- --- -- -- - - --- -
..snipped..
L3_PRI_LTO6.70 57.4 99.6 NO 10035 29 6
L3_PRI_LTO6.70 57.4 99.6 NO 10035 134
...chopped..

The run before this one showed the VolUsed column at 17 and 13 (still totaling
30). When I do a count of the volumes in that stgpool, it does come out to 30.
The run after this one showed only a single entry for L3_PRI_LTO, with 30 tapes
used.
Odd behavior.. If anyone has a clue why, it would sure help satisfy my
curiosity...
Thx
Todd

on-site copy of the files that TSM cannot access.

Try checking 0FA0CC into the library, give it readonly access, and try

Re: Restoring Domain controller

2005-02-21 Thread TSM_User
Did you restore onto the same hardware or to different hardware. If it is
different hardware is there a difference between the server that was backed up
and the server you restored? Usually boot problems with windows OS restores
are due to one of two things. Either you have different hardware in which case
you have to run through the In-Place upgrade or you didn't have the correct
service pack installed when you first built the server.

Remember that if you want to restore the backup of an OS+SP (ex Windows 2000
SP4) then you must first build the server with that OS+SP prior to performing
the restore. Also if you are on differnt hardware and you want to perform a
dissimilar restore then on the first boot after the restore you must boot form
a Windows installation CD with the OS slipstreamed into it.

2005-02-21 Thread Jones, Eric J
I just went through testing and without the SP that was originally on
the machine I could not get the machine to come up correctly. Once I
did the base install, applied the SP, restored the drives, then restored
the SYSTEM OBJECT it came up without a problem.

Subject: Re: Restoring Domain controller

Did you restore onto the same hardware or to different hardware. If it
is different hardware is there a difference between the server that was
backed up and the server you restored? Usually boot problems with
windows OS restores are due to one of two things. Either you have
different hardware in which case you have to run through the In-Place
upgrade or you didn't have the correct service pack installed when you
first built the server.

Remember that if you want to restore the backup of an OS+SP (ex Windows
2000 SP4) then you must first build the server with that OS+SP prior to
performing the restore. Also if you are on differnt hardware and you
want to perform a dissimilar restore then on the first boot after the
restore you must boot form a Windows installation CD with the OS
slipstreamed into it.

Dear All,
I had to restore active directory, and the one which did not have any
any other backup domain controller (This is also our mail server MS
Exchange 2000).

What i did was that i installed OS and service packs .. and then simply
went into restoring the server using backups !

1-Restored drive C
2-Restored Drive D
3- Restored System objects

When i restarted the system it didn't comeup instead it remained at the
first white bar of windows loading against black back ground.

I was pretty much confused as to what did i do wrong as i restored
everything and it should have come back.

Anyone any idea on this? I wanted to keep things simple but it sounds
like it is not letting me to be simple .. !

? replace aging 3590 tapes/drives w/ LTO ?

2005-02-21 Thread James R Owen
We're looking for experienced advice considering whether to

a)upgrade our 3590 E1A drives to H1A drives and reuse
our aging 3590 tapes for net gain of 50% more tape space
  b)discard 3494 and 3590 technology and replace w/ LTO-2 or
LTO-3 drives and media, expanding our existing 3584 ATL's
currently filled w/ LTO-1 media and mixed LTO-1/2 drives.
If you have considered or done one of these conversions, we would
like to hear from or talk with you. If you don't feel like writing
a reply, please send me a phone# and we'll try to call you.
Yale University started using 3590 tapes 8 years ago in 1996.
We now have two 3494 ATL's, each w/ six 3590 E1A drives,
and about 4000 J tape cartridges, most of them 6-8 years old.
The warranted life of a 3590 cartridge is 10 years, so...
we are wondering what other sites are thinking/doing about
your aging 3590 media and hardware.
To date, our actual 3590 media failures are insignificant:
about 40-50 tapes over the 8 years or 1-2% real failed media.
[But how much longer can we expect them to last: 5-10 yrs?]
That's eliminating all of the false failures where the 3590
drive actually was at fault; if the tape passes an AUDit Volume
and doesn't get errors on another drive, we UPDate the volume
back to ReadWrite status and keep on using it, unless it fails
again! We also re-attach leader blocks, if they get pulled off,
and continue to using the tape if it loads OK. We've only had to
fix 6 of those, but 3 became detached during the past 2 weeks!
We've had a rough two weeks with one of our 3494 ATL's, but
problems seem to occur in fits and spurts. After a few months
w/ no problems, we've called IBM 8 times during the past week to
service 3590 problems in our busiest 3494 (but had no problems
w/ the other one!)
During the busiest hours of each afternoon (migrating small
clients' backups from disk to collocated 3590 tapes) each
of the six 3590 drives mounts (and dismounts) 20 tapes/hr or
120 tapes/hr for the 3494 robot. The library is typically
that busy for 5-7 hours each day, then much less busy for the
rest of the day and night, mostly doing 3590 tape reclamations.
Please advise, if you have experience to share.
Thanks for your help.

versifying question in TSM land

2005-02-21 Thread Justin Case
FYI

We are running TSM server 5.2.2.3 on Aix 5.1 ML_05 64bit. code and 64bit
kernel

Platform: SUN SOLARIS
  Client OS Level: 5.9
Client Version: Version 5, Release 2, Level 0.4

I need verification of the scenario list below.
because we have a Cyrus mail server that needs to keep it deleted file for
30 days
and only keep the smallest amount of data..

Thanks

Listed below is my sample config and explanation
Please correct me if I am in error.

3.
This management class with (versions data exists = 3) will keep 3 versions
of a file
1 active and 2 inactive version if there is a 4th version of a file it
would be kept
until 30 days then the version of the file keep would roll off, and the
management
class would keep only the 1 active file and the 2 inactive file.

Then the (versions data deleted = 1) this means that any file that has been
deleted
that the system the (retain only version = 30) would keep the deleted file
for 30 days.

? how to protect LTO media shipped offsite to Iron Mountain ?

2005-02-21 Thread James R Owen
How do you protect LTO media shipped offsite to Iron Mountain?
We currently ship all backupsets offsite to Iron Mountain
on 3590 J cartridges w/ no noticeable problems; we just pack
as many tapes as will fit tightly into one of Iron Mountain's
metal shipping cases.
We've been told that LTO cartridges are much more susceptible
to damage and have never ejected or shipped any of them offsite.
I'm thinking any ejected LTO tapes should at least be put back
into their original plastic cases before being packed (how?)
into a Iron Mountain shipping case, but what do you do?
Have you had any problems shipping LTO tapes offsite?
Thanks for sharing your experience and advice.

Re: ? how to protect LTO media shipped offsite to Iron Mountain ?

2005-02-21 Thread Miles Purdy
We also use Iron Mountain, without any complaints. We put the LTO tapes in
their clear white cases and then in a soft pizza bag to be shipped off site.
I have had problems with the leader pins falling out of the cartridges - I
don't know if this is related to them being shipped offsite though.

Slow Netwre 6 backups

2005-02-21 Thread Cameron Ambrose
Guys,

Is anyone out there experiencing extremely slow backup issue's with
netware 6.x servers? Some of the larger servers are taking days to complete
a backup. During this time the servers are running at 100% utilization.

Environment:
Tsm server is 5.2.0 on a solaris Platform
Tsm Client is 5.3.0. Using latest Tsa's, TSAFS.NLM (6.50.14) and
SMDR.NLM (6.54.01)
  Client Platform Netware 6, SP3.

I also get the following errors in the client's error log. I can't
seem to find too much info about the sessRecVerb error? Though the Session
initializing messages are fairly self explanitory.

02/08/2005 00:10:14 sessRecvVerb: Error -50 from call to 'readRtn'.
02/08/2005 00:10:14 ANS1809W Session is lost; initializing session
reopen procedure.
02/08/2005 00:10:15 ANS1809W Session is lost; initializing session
reopen procedure.

Any help on this would be greatly appreciated

thanks in advance Cameron

2005-02-21 Thread Werner Nussbaumer
Hi

I'm searching for the installation and user's guide for the IBM Tivoli Storage
Manager Client for z/OS Unix System Services version = 5.1 (in PDF format). I
found documents about SUN Solaris, Windows and other clients, but could not
find it for z/OS USS.

Thanks for any help,
