Re: dsm scheduler on windows
Actually, this brings up a good question that I've never properly tested. When running a scheduler service *without* an Acceptor service, then you most definitely need to restart the service for changes to take place. But how about when running an Acceptor service? It makes sense to me that the Acceptor would need to be restarted whenever an option is changed that the acceptor must deal with, eg. tcpserveraddress, schedmode, etc. Some options, however, are only relevant to the scheduler service itself, such as exclude lists, dirmc, domain, etc. Since the scheduler service is started at the appropriate time by the acceptor, does this imply that the acceptor does not need to be restarted for these options? My personal belief is no - it doesn't need to be restarted if the changed option is one that the acceptor doesn't touch. I haven't tested this properly, however. Anyone proved/disproved this? Related Note: When changing items in a Cloptset, is there any requirement to restart a client scheduler? Documentation doesn't make this clear. dual client installation with strange results
Aloha, I have a dual client installation on a Win2000 server, by dual client i mean two schedules with different option files. On the tsm-serversite there two different nodes with the same IP for this propose. I don't know if this is the right solution, but i thought it might work ... which it doesn't. The resultes are .. strange ... the connection to the server dopes 3 time while each backup is processes. The second backup inspects the files, but does not backup them, or only those that have changes during the two processes. This setup is done, cause to the backupplan, which said that we should make a backupset of only a subset of data the normal data. Does this in general work ? Is there a diffrent solution to the quest, of backuping only a subset and making a backupset out of it? with regards Mark Strasheim -- definitiv! business applications GmbH Co. Re: TSM LICENSE: Server is NOT IN COMPLIANCE with license terms
The license number in ITSM is meaningless. The number of license you will have to buy is cpu based. ITSM is still node based. For some reason, IBM hasn't made changes in the code to let the ITSM client tell the ITSM server how many CPU's the client has. Maybe in a next version? Register as many licenses you need to keep getting hit by these error messages. They will never expire. select question: Finding files bound to an archive management class per node ?

I need that because some day those obsolete archive copygroups should be deleted -the archive data is not unlimited by time- if not needed anymore. My other question is: is there a way to make management classes kind of unseen to the client if those archive managementclasses / archive copygroups are not usable anymore and just defined at the server for not to lose the data ? ... or is there something else what can be done ? Re: select question: Finding files bound to an archive management class per node ?
Hi Rainer, What is it you are *really* trying to find out? Depending on the size of your database, mining the ARCHIVES table can be a slow process when maybe you don't quite need that level of detail? You can find out who has any archived data by querying the occupancy table: query occupancy type=archive That will show you which nodes have any archived data, and how many objects they have. If you still want to mine the ARCHIVES table, then perhaps it would be best for you to run one SELECT against the entire table, store the results in a file, then use some other utiity to mine that data: dsmadmc -id=you -pa=xx -comma select * from archives archives.out With that said... If you want to find out how many objects a given node has archived, you can do something like this: select node_name, class_name, count(*) \ from archives \ group by node_name, class_name If you want to know what specific object by node name: select filespace_name || hl_name || ll_name \ as FILE NAME \ from archives \ where node_name='YOURNODE' and class_name='YOURCLASS' Depending on your specific needs, you can create variations of these. For your other question, the BACKRETENTION and ARCHRETENTION settings for the policy domain might be useful. Re: dsm scheduler on windows
If you run backups the old way, by using the scheduler service, when you make changes to dsm.opt you must restart the scheduler service. If you are running your backups with the managedservices option (i.e., the dsmcad/acceptor service), no restart is needed when you change DSM.opt. (Because what dsmcad does is toggle the scheduler on/off, essentially restarting the scheduler each time a backup is run.) If you make changes to a cloptset, no restart of ANYTHING is required. I haven't tested this properly, however. Anyone proved/disproved this? Related Note: When changing items in a Cloptset, is there any requirement to restart a client scheduler? Documentation doesn't make this clear. Again, my belief is no, it doesn't need to be done, however I have not tested this regards, Paul - Original Message - From: Rushforth, Tim [EMAIL PROTECTED] To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Sent: Monday, March 14, 2005 3:54 PM Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] dsm scheduler on windows If you make a change in dsm.opt you have to restart the schedule service for scheduled operations to pick up the change. Re: linux client version question
We're running 5.3 clients against a 5.2 server right now and it works just fine. And since I don't plan on upgrading my servers to 5.3 until I HAVE to do it, it will stay that way for a while. John E. Vincent Troy Frank wrote: We currently run TSM server v5.2.2.2 , and will shortly have some linux clients to backup. We would be running SLES9 which doesn't seem to be supported by the 5.2x clients. The 5.3 client does support it, but I wasn't sure of the safety/wisdom of running the 5.3 linux client against a 5.2x server. Anyone have a comforting experience, or horror story to share? Minor gotcha on upgrade to 5.3
Hi there, some of you might remember that I encountered a problem when upgrading TSM from 5.2 to 5.3. The problem was that FILE-volumes reached a premature end-of-volume, causing a 64 MiB volume to only be 1,5 % used but still be full. The cause of this is now known, and it's not a bug but still something to be aware of. In TSM 5.3, the handling of FILE volumes was changed. All writes to such a volume is now done in blocks of 256 KiB minimum, even when the object itself is much smaller. In my case, the storagepool only contained directories. (DIRMC option pointing to a small DISK pool, which migrated to the affected FILE pool) In TSM 5.2 and earlier, this wasn't a problem. In 5.3 (and presumably later), each tiny object now takes up 256 KiB at a minumum, causing a *huge* overhead. The solution was to stop using FILE volumes for this pool, but only DISK volumes. Netware backup with foreign character file names
I have a Netware system (5.2.3.x client) that always complains about a specific file. The TSM server log shows the error as: 03/15/2005 00:00:37 ANE4005E (Session: 114454, Node: CSERV3.VCU.EDU) Error processing 'LUCKY:/PHYS/Pittman/Home/AGolub/BACKUPOLDWHITE/My Documents/ _? __ NO ? ?? ?? ? _.doc': file not found(SESSION: 114454) The owner of the box sent me an email that says: I went to the location of the file that is a bother. From the looks of it, I believe the file is saved in another language, Russian. I was able to copy the name of the titleNO from MS Word Properties into Google. I dont have the slighest idea what is means. Do you think we need to get the user to rename the file to the English language? My question is, what do I need to do to handle these kind of files ?

Re: Netware backup with foreign character file names
It may depend somewhat on what version of netware you're running. The very newest ones (nw6.5sp2/sp3) work with UTF-8 characters much better than the older versions. Freezing a node's data - revisiting 'Need to save permanent cop y of all files currently being stored'
All, I found this thread and it fits a situation I have, where I need to freeze the data that has already been backed up on certain nodes, but new backup data can be allowed to expire normally. The following post from Robin Sharp is exactly what I was considering attempting, except that I want to put the node back into normal backup after loading it in the freezer. Can anyone comment on modifying this procedure by following these steps: 1.Create a domain called Freezer with only one mgmtclass - bu/ar copygroup settings all at nolimit 2.upd node water domain=freezer 3.run an incremental on water to rebind all data to freezer's mgmtclass 4.rename node water ice 5.register water, using original settings 6.run an incremental backup on water, basically a full since it is considered a new node If I understand TSM's mechanisms, I would then have a node named ice that contains all of water's backup data as of a specific point in time, which will never expire. I also have water with a fresh start. One question I have is that with only one mgmtclass in the freezer domain, how much will TSM complain if I don't go in and change all of the client option sets pointing to specific mgmtclasses? Another question - how does this process affect water's data in the DR copypools? Original response by Robin Sharp - Need to save permanent copy of all files currently being stored Is all that really necessary? How about creating a new permanent retention domain, copy all relevant policy sets, management classes, copygroups, etc. to the new domain, but change all retentions to NOLIMIT. Then move the affected client to the new domain. Next incremental should rebind all existing data to the new NOLIMIT management classes.
