Re: ANR0670E
Richard, What I found this week was that the error message was correct, but the circumstances murky. When I moved all the files for the client to disk before exporting, the message I got was "insufficient space in storagepool..." in a stgpool not even known to the exporting server, a place holder for when I have to start exporting from server2 next week. What did catch my eye was that it had the highest RETO in the DOMAIN, which lead me to the DIRMC stgpool, which surprisingly, had no volumes assigned to it. Once the hardware guys put some storage on, the export went fine, but only if it goes directly from disk. But that's another story. At 08:13 AM 7/15/2005 -0400, you wrote: ... 07/14/2005 14:06:27 ANR0687E IMPORT (from Server TSM): Transaction failure - could not commit database transaction. (SESSION: 228, PROCESS: 8) ... Fred - Well, I think what you have there is a system with a fear of commitment. Whereas you are exporting to a higher level TSM system, that should be fine. (Export-Import is documented as happy to operate where the importing TSM server is at least the same level as the exporting one; and it should even work across architectural platforms.) One thing I would assure is that neither the sending nor receiving TSM server is doing any significant database work at the time of the export, per the manual advisory: "Because of unpredictable results, do not run expiration, migration, backup, or archive when issuing the EXPORT NODE command." Whenever documentation talks about "unpredictable results", take all cautions. To try to narrow the problem down, what I would do is: Try the export with MERGEfilespaces=No, unless you really need that. If you do need it, I would try exporting the filespaces individually, rather than en mass, and see if there's one in particular which incites the problem. My intuition says that merging is at the heart of this problem, where there may be some kind of policy conflict or name confusion. Merging is highly complex, and lots could go wrong. If the problem persists, you should contact TSM Support. Do not take any database actions on your own: they will advise and guide. In conjunction with this, it would be prudent to scan your historic Activity Log records on the problem system and see if there is any evidence of irregularities, particularly in the database: such info will help the support person in getting a handle on the situation. Let us know the final resolution, for our communal edification. Richard Sims Fred Johanson ITSM Administrator University of Chicago 773-702-8464

Jane, I know of no such limit. I'm running a 1 GB buffer pool on my 4 GB TSM AIX server with no issues. The only thing to watch is that the buffer pool is considered "process" memory by AIX. So the default MaxPerm% of 80% means that AIX allows process to have priority on 1 GB with the other 3 GB given preference for files. Because in my case, process memory is 25% + whatever AIX and TSM themselves use, quite a lot of memory would be paged out to disk. So you have to adjust MaxPerm% down to allow AIX and TSM to have enough process memory to avoid that paging activity. If you understand what's going on that should be a one-time operation. Good luck. Re: TDP's and Encryption and 5.3, Oh My....
Hi Allen, We have done this at the router level with IPSec tunnels between sites where we want to secure the data (not just backup data if you so desire). Makes it completely transparent to the user/application which is very nice. Our users have no idea its in place. The down side? CPU load on the routers, of course. So, obviously it depends on the amount data you are trying to shovel down the wire versus the capacity of the routers. Just my 2 cents! Re: Multiple Schedules for Multiple Partitions on Solaris/Domino/TDP
Thanks for the reply. Looks like I am going to need 13-schedules, 1-OS, 6-incremental, 6-weeklys (incremental and weeklys have different nodenames, dsm.opts, etc). Do you (or someone else) have an example of how to code the /etc/init.d/dsmcad scripts for multiple schedules (I am very new to Solaris) ? I did find a webpage that says I need to code an EXPORT statement to set the DSM_CONFIG variable to point to the proper DSM.OPT files (which are already defined). Do I just create 13-files (domsched1-12 + dsmcad) in /etc/init.d and each has the export statement ? Just point them to the appropriate dsm.opt file. Then, the schedules for all partitions will kick-off. 2) use one scheduler associated with anyone of the TSM nodes. Inside the schedule invoke domdsmc for each partition using the appropiate dsm.opt file (-adsmoptfile=/partition.opt) and the appropriate notes user. Note that for each scheduler only one schedule can run a time. So if you want to run multiple domdsmc instances in parallel from a schedule, you need to run each invocation of domdsmc in the background. We run our servers on Windows with a BUFPOOLSIZE of 524288 (ie 131,072 pages). This allows us to run two TSM instances per Windows box. (It's an MSCS cluster, so we have to cater for the failover scenario where both instances are on the one cluster node.) We've successfully run a single instance with BUFPOOLSIZE set to 1048576. The factor that prevented us increasing BUFPOOLSIZE any further was nothing to do with physical memory, but the non-paged pool exhaustion. This occurs because every extra page of buffer pool requires a certain number of handles. If you monitor the handle count for the DSMSVC.EXE process, you'll see it reaches astronomical proportions with large BUFPOOLSIZEs. This has a knock-on effect on the non-paged pool. The relevant article is here: http://www-1.ibm.com/support/entdocview.wss?uid=swg21112140 Last time I spoke to IBM support about this, they suggested that 64-bit Windows would give a larger nonpaged pool and therefore allow a larger BUFPOOLSIZE.
