Antwort: [ADSM-L] Linux as a TSM server

2005-08-09 Thread Dierk Harbort
Hi, Bill !

We are running our TSM server (5.2.) on SUSE Linux SLES 8, without any
problems. The only thing is, that you have to take care
for the user rights: Only users with a root-like logon will be able to do
anything on the TSM Server. So we created a special root user for
TSM with root the Linux ID - that works fine.

Is anyone experiencing a lot of problems running their TSM server on Linux?
I have not really noticed a lot of problems brought up about this, but it
could because I wasn't looking.

Thanks,

Re: Linux as a TSM server

2005-08-09 Thread Braulio Junior

I have 6 TSM's customers running linux and backing up filesystems and
databases, including db2 (aix and linux), oracle (sun), informix (linux
and windows) and sql-server. No problems... Stable and fast...

I'm configuring another TSM Server for a 90Gb Informix, running again
under Linux. Since now, no problems too.

Everyone running SuSE Linux (SLES 8 and 9). My personal TSM runs using a
SuSE Linux Professional 9.2.

You can find the most up-to-date information at the TSM support web site

W2K3 IA-64 server experiences

Hello,
Has anyone had experience running TSM server 5.3.n.n on
a Windows Server 2003 Datacenter Edition (IA-64) SP1 system?
The Installation Guide indicates this server should be installable on
64-bit W2K3 systems, but is not specific regarding which 64-bit
architecture.

I don't have alot of options for advance experimentation, which is why
I'm
interested to hear how this worked for you (or not).

Thanks very much!

Re: Linux as a TSM server

2005-08-09 Thread Mueller, Ken
We've been running TSM on Intel/Red Hat for over 2 years. For reference,
we're using TSM server 5.2.4.2 on RHEL 3.0 Update 1 on an IBM x335. FC
attached 3583 and disk pools (separate hba's, of course!) - Database is
about 20G - Backup types include DP for Oracle and Exchange, a few Windows
machines, and Linux servers (including several w/15 million+ files - we use
image+incremental there).

The only problems we've had were due to buggy firmware on our 3583's Gen 1
LTO drives causing I/O errors - wasn't the penguin's fault! Are you running
into 'a lot of problems'?

I concur. The

This seems to fit the situation, all right.
I'm going to try disabling the system state/services in the domain statement

2005-08-09 Thread Bos, Karel
Hi,

I would suspect "out of mem" conditions on this type of back-ups.
However, very strange that no logs exists.

Probably helps to look closely at the sched.log. In their you should be
able to see when en where the scheduled back-up stops, and maybe even
why. Of course, quiet etc should be in the opt.

Subject: strange incremental behavior on Windows 5.2.2.0

TSM server 5.2.2.0 on AIX, client 5.2.2.0 on Win 2003 Std

About 2 weeks ago we noticed that the daily scheduled incremental
backups on our 2 big fileservers were behaving oddly.

When the scheduled incrementals run, or if I use an immediate action, or
command line from the machines themselves, the backups look like they
complete normally, but they only show that they have examined < 10k
files.
There is no error message in the sched log or the activity log, nothing
in dsmerror or dsierror, no dump, nothing. the schedule reports
completed successfully.

If I termserv to the machines and backup through the client gui, it
behaves normally and backs up tons of files.

These file servers each have 2 volumes of 1.7TB and 1.3TB with over 5mil
files on each. These volumes have been increased every few weeks due to
running out of space.

I havent found any apar that seems to fit this odd behavior, and we
havent touched the tsm client on these machines for at least 6 months.
we are not using journaling on them.

anyone seen anything that would shed light?

Hi Andy,

thanks for your reply.
So I can stop with my multisession restore tests as TSM itself decides
wether it
uses one or more drives for ist "multi session" restore ;-)

Microsoft retired their mainstream support for NT 4.0 a couple of years
ago, and extended support was retired at the end of 2004. Meanwhile, the
TSM client for NT 4.0 is still supported during the lifecycle of TSM 5.2,
albeit at the 5.1 code level.

Re: No Multi-session restore after multi session backup

2005-08-09 Thread Andrew Raibeck
Hi Thomas,

How multisession restore decides to use multiple sessions is somewhat
dependent on timing and other unpredictable run-time factors. There is no
guarantee two files will be restored with separate sessions (in parallel)
just because they happen to reside on two separate tapes.

Andy

Re: No Multi-session restore after multi session backup

2005-08-09 Thread Mark D. Rodriguez

Thomas,

My guess is that you are not doing a "No Query Restore" (NQR). The only
way TSM will do a multisession restore is if you are doing a NQR. And
the trick with this is that it mus be an unrestricted wild card
specification on the restore command. If you look in the client
reference guide it describes what a NQR is and is not. Below is a part
of the reference guide:

When you enter an unrestricted wildcard source file specification on the
restore command and do not specify any of the options: inactive, latest,
pick, fromdate, or todate, the client uses a different method for
restoring files and directories from the server. This method is called
no query restore because instead of querying the server for each object
to be restored, a single restore request is sent to the server. In this
case, the server returns the files and directories to the client without
further action by the client. The client merely accepts the data coming
from the server and restores it to the destination named on the restore
command.

An example of an unrestricted wildcard file specification would be:

/home/mydocs/2004/*

An example of a restricted wildcard file specification would be:

/home/mydocs/2004/sales.*

I backup a Directory with 2 Files each 5GB in size in parallel to two

When I do a restore via GUI one session starts and restores file 1. When
the file
is restored and the tape drive goes idle a second session is started and
retrieves
file 2 from the other tape.
I've followed technote 1109935 regarding "multi-session restore".
Shouldn't TSM start both restore sessions at once?

I checked the setting of the RESOURCEUTILIZATION (10), the MAXNUMMP (2),
that the files are on separate tapes and don't span tapes.

I would greatly appreciate any hints so make me understand why TSM

Don't be enamored of the Estimate button, as it's a fleeting client
provision. As the TSM 5.3 Unix client manual says: "The [TSM 5.3+]
Java GUI does not have an Estimate button."

When we speak of performing data acquisition via the client CLI, we
mean using 'dsmc Query ...' to perform lookups on stored data

centralized control point you would want, but that's what there is.

AW: Select for archive size

2005-08-09 Thread Stefan Holzwarth
Richard,

as you mention you have to take care of the expiration that archivecontents
will have during their lifecycle. Therefore you have to query every
accountiong period for the actual size of the archives. I do not see any
possibility with perl since the commandline does not show estimate retrieve
size (as the gui does).

Kind regards

Stefan -

There is no inherent capability for listing stored file sizes from
TSM server queries: what it shows, in the Contents table FILE_SIZE is
the Aggregate size; and that equals the file size only if the file is
as large as or larger than an Aggregate. You'll need to acquire sizes
via client-side queries, as for example performed through a Perl script.

The TSM accounting records could be used to charge for Archive and
Retrieve, in that they record username; but there is no like
accounting of deletion/expiration, to balance the books from that
viewpoint.

On a go-forward basis, it may be feasible in your environment to have
all archiving occur through an interface script which would charge
per observed file sizes involved in Archive, Retrieve, and Delete.
