Re: Admin Center

2005-10-18 Thread John Monahan
I have run Admin Center on 2 different machines with the 64-bit kernel
without any issues. If something is found not to work just because of the
64-bit issue I'll do what I do for the other things that don't work in
Admin Center like DRM setup - use the command line. If it really comes
down to some catastrophe I can switch back to the 32 bit kernel with a
little work.

I find it ludicrous that all TSM software is supported with the 64 bit
kernel except for the admin interface to manage it.

Are you running Admin Center in 64 bit AIX or 32 bit AIX on a 64 bit
machine?

The Admin Center requirements web page,
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21195062, says "AIX (32-bit
operating system on either 32-bit or 64-bit hardware )" while the TSM for
AIX 5.3 Install Guide says "AIX 5.2 on pSeries (64-bit operating system on
either a 32-bit or 64-bit hardware system)". Tivoli Support in PMR 25797
082 000 says the web page is accurate, thus 32-bit AIX is all that is
supported.

Andy, can you speak to this?

Fw: Determining which side of an optical platter a file is on?

2005-10-18 Thread Nicholas Cassimatis
JD,

The "query content" output is in sequential order of how the files are
found on the volume. Since the platters are written as a sequential
volume, first the front, then the back, you can take the "query content"
output, and minimize manipulation of the cartridge itself by requesting the
files in that order. That jumps the answer to your question (I don't think
there's an easy way to get what you want, if there's a way at all), but it
gets you close to the action you're looking for.

Hi Allen. =)

The goal is to move this data (through a conversion process) onto new
hardware, and Content-Addressable-Storage (CAS) technology like
Centera or IBM's DR550. Given the size of the data, this migration
will take months, and the systems simply can't be offline, nor is an
investment in new hardware warranted.

I'm still no closer to finding a good answer to my question about how
to determine which side of a platter I can find specific data. Is
there anyone out there who can shed some light on the subject?

Hey all!

Thanks so much for your help! Our production is up and running!

I just have a question on our Vaulting.

TSM - 5.2.60
RHEL 4
IBM 3583 Tape Library - Only 1 slot i/o door.

We just started vaulting just on Friday. I am checking in and out
tapes pretty well. However, I have a volume 622ANWL2 that I checked out
on Friday. However, the volume appears to be in the library according
to TSMManager. However it says the location is offsite. It has never
requested that this tape to be returned, so, I don't know why it lists
it in the 'q libvol'. In addition, when I check in my tapes after
retrieving them from the vault, I cannot check them in as scratch tapes.
It will only accept them as private. When I try to do an audit on the
library by checking table, and all I get is an I/O error, and I think
this is because it is looking for 622ANWL2. I also received an error
when checking out the volumes the second day of vaulting.

Re: Admin Center

2005-10-18 Thread Richard Rhodes
We run Admin Center on our AIX system with 64bit AIX. It seemed to
work just fine . . . but then, I haven't actually used it since, well, we
installed it.
We use the old GUI and cmd line.

I attended one of the IBM Web meetings on using ISC/AdminCenter. I asked
this
very question about support on 64 bit AIX. The guy basically said they
hadn't tested it on 64 bit AIX and it wasn't on their roadmap. I thought
this was very strange, to say the least - another example of the
disconnect with ISC/AdminCenter.

Re: TDP for Lotus Domino 5.1.5.1 problem

2005-10-18 Thread Del Hoobler
Hi Farren,

A few observations:

1. The script below is doing an "incremental" backup... not a selective.
With "incremental" backups, the .NSF file will not be backed up unless
the DBIID has changed. The archivelog will capture the changes.
The User's Guide discusses this in more detail.

2. I recommend that you upgrade to the latest Data Protection for Domino.
   Site: ftp.software.ibm.com
   Dir:
/storage/tivoli-storage-management/patches/tivoli-data-protection/domino/win32/v5301/
It includes fixes for some GUI crashes.

3. domdsmc does allow wildcards, so you could do something like:
   domdsmc incremental mail2\* /subdir=no
If you don't want some databases backed up, you can EXCLUDE them.
The User's Guide discusses this in more detail.

Thanks,

Del

TDP for Lotus Domino 5.1.5.1 problem

2005-10-18 Thread Farren Minns
Hi all

I have just had a client on the phone with a TDP for Domino problem. I am
not really familiar with this or the Windows 2000 server it's running on
and may well not provide enough information from the off so please let me
know what else is required.

Running TSM Server 5.1.6.2 on Solaris. The problem is with a 5.1.5.1 TDP
Domino Client running on Windows 2000 SP4 (5:00:2195).

Basically, if he does a selective backup (using the script below) it works
fine, but incrementals seem to run OK but don't actually back anything up
(except the transaction logs I think). Any ideas what the problem might be
?

Also, he was originally trying to backup the mail dir but the GUI would
just keep dropping out when he tried to do a manual backup. As such he has
attempted to create a new dir called mail2 with database links pointing to
the necessary databases. When he does this and used the GUI to look in
mail2, it works fine.

I'm sorry if I haven't provided the correct info but I'm not a Windows
admin and have very limited knowledge in this realm.

Many thanks in advance

specified directories.

When I was doing a lot of this, I did an export with no filedata first, moved
the node into its' new home, and then did an additional export to send the
data. As long as you don't replace the definitions, it worked fine.

I don't think there's a "requirement"; IIRC, when you pass over a file which
is bound to a devclass which does not exist on the target server, the file is
rebound to the default MC.

So, if there are distinctions you wish to maintain, then be sure you've got
parallel management classes with parallel definitions. You may find this
simplest to perform by first exporting the domain; EXPORT POLICY is the way
to start.

2005-10-18 Thread John E. Vincent

I can help with this as well if needed.

Allen, we're you the one who originally submitted the ebuilds to
bugzilla? I submitted an updated ebuild back last year. I'm still
curious about the license restrictions on this. As I posted on bugzilla,
the client is useless without a TSM server. IBM posts these on a public
FTP site. Still my ebuils all have fetch restriction turned on.

In addition to pulling down the publicly available clients, this ebuild makes
some assumptions about where you want things and what you want done. For
example, we stick the password caches in /etc/tivoli and we stick the logs in
/var/log. Take a look at it and make sure you agree with its' opinions.

We make a bunch of symlinks to take care of the libpath stuff.

If you don't know how to add this to your local portage tree and install it,

WORM; OK, my optical installation was rewritable, and I must have missed where
you mentioned this. I thought you said something about taking the data out of
TSM, processing it, and then putting it back in.

I'm confused though; if you're worried about the fragility of the current
system, isn't getting the data off the optical one of the goals of the
operation? Might the 3592 WORM media help you there? If your access to that
data is sufficiently seldom, you might get away with tape mount latency too,
and then you'd save many squares of floorspace. :)

Our use of the 3995 was not 'occasional', we certainly had many many mounts.
I agree entirely with your evaluation of "put it on disk!". At one point I
was using optical volumes in a manner similar to that in which most of us use
disk now: I had only 2 tape mount points, I used the my 4 optical mount points
so I could at least get six clients backing up at once. Shudder. I was glad
to see that silo go on the loading dock.

Re: Slow backup performance

2005-10-18 Thread Troy Frank
It looks like all your tsa/tcp modules are a little out of date. If possible,
I'd get nw65sp4a installed on it. Alternately, you could just run the tsa5up18
& tcp659j updates. Your tsa.cfg file looks pretty standard, and I've never
really had trouble with it unless "Cache Memory Threshold" is set over 20/25%.

The Delayed Acknowledgement parameter can be set a couple different ways.
Either a "set delayed acknowledgement = off/on" at the commandline, or through
the remote manager portal for the server (click "set parameters", then
"communications"). If you do it from the commandline, the setting won't stick
after reboot unless you add it to the autoexec.ncf.

The other thing I noticed is that you've got resourceutilization set to 6 in
dsm.opt. Usually there's not much reason to set it any more than #tape
drives+1. I've experienced problems here trying to set it to anything more
than 4. ymmv, as always.

If the problem is disk-system performance, you will want to verify that you're
running the latest drivers for your raid/scsi adapter. Also be sure to update
the controller's firmware to the latest version. Here's some netware settings
to look at in Remote Manager under "set parameters"/"disk"

Auto scan for devices ON
Auto load of CDM modules ON
Snapshot Allocate Block Count 5000
Sequential Elevator Depth 6000 (the default is way to low at 8)
Enable IO Handicap Attribute OFF
Mirrored Devices Are Out Of Sync Message Frequency 28
Remirror Block Size 1
Concurrent Remirror Requests 32
Ignore Partition Ownership OFF
Ignore Disk Geometry OFF
Multi-path Support OFF
Enable Hardware Write Back ON (Depending on your controller, you might want to
experiment with this OFF)
Enable Disk Read After Write Verify OFF (make sure this is off)
Auto LFVMount ON

Hi Troy,

Thanks for responding. Checked nic/switch both set to 100FD.
Currently the server is at Netware 6.5SP2.

Not sure what tsaup?? we're runing but the following are the
revision numbers for the nlm's mentioned

TSAFS.NLM 6.50.09
SMDR.NLM 6.54.01
TCP.NLM 6.57.03
TCPIP.NLM 6.57.06

The tsa.cfg file is thus, pretty close to the defaults used.

Read Buffer Size:
65536
Read Threads Per Job:
4
Read Thread Allocation:
100
Read Ahead Throttle:
2
Cache Memory Threshold:
10
Disable Cluster:
no

We've currently set ResourceUtilization to 6

Couldn't find where the "TCP Delayed Acknowlegement" setting is
applied? Is it a Novell OS option or a TSM server/client option?

Thanks in advance Cameron

It would also be helpful to know what revision levels your server is at.
Do you have any 6.5 service packs applied? Any of the TSA or TCP updates?
What settings are you using when you load tsafs (look in
sys:\etc\sms\tsa.cfg), and are you using "ResourceUtilization" or any other
performance setttings in your dsm.opt? You might also want to check your
server's tcp settings to make sure that TCP Delayed Ackknowlegement is off.
As has been mentioned already, it's also very possible that there is
something wrong in the nic/switch setup. There is no "always right" answer
as to how they should be configged. Some nic/switch combos work best with
both hardcoded, some with both on auto, and some with one hardcoded/one on
auto. I would also make sure you're running the newest version of the nic
driver.
