Hi Markus Thank you for information. It is very useful for me. Thanks and Regards Murugan -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] On Behalf Of Markus Engelhard Sent: Tuesday, January 02, 2007 1:17 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: [ADSM-L] Antwort: TAPE DRIVE STATE UNKNOWN Hi Murugan, sorry for the late response. On W2K3 and SAN Drives I rather love the tsmdlst-utility with the flag -all which gives you a good Idea of the library and drive state, including fw-levels . Also check if the Library and drives are managed by the IBM-Tape drivers. Last but not least deactivate the MS Removable Storage Service, as this can cause trouble. To realign misconfigured libraries and drives in a non-shared environments I find it easiest to just delete the configuration and start from scratch, checking in the volumes as scratch (first) and private. Think about scripting the stuff (look at the devconfig file to get a clue how). ?'s about Backup of Cyrus email, LTO3 vs 3592 tapes, and using Copy tapes
Happy New Year to All! @Yale, we will do several conversions soon/later during 2007: email: from U.Washington IMAP servers to Cyrus IMAP servers. tapes: from 3494 w/ 3590 drives to 3584 w/ LTO2-3 and/or 3592's. TSM:from server 5.2.3 to 5.3.4, and then to 5.4? Copies: ?using Copy tapes for all/some/no client Backups? 1. We seek experience/advice from sites using TSM to backup Cyrus servers: Email currently accounts for 1/3 - 1/2 of the 5 TB of backups received nightly across all of our TSM servers. We anticipate that the IMAP-Cyrus conversion will significantly reduce TB's backed up, but significantly increase the number of files backed up and, thus, our TSM database sizes. Has Cyrus - increased TSM database size been a problem at your site? Did you adjust any TSM client/server settings specifically for Cyrus backups? 2. LTO3 vs 3592 Tape Performance: (and TCO?) We also expect to replace aging 3590 tapes and drives with LTO3 and/or 3592 technology. If you have experience to recommend one/another technology, we are interested. We expect either LTO3 or 3592 technology will be satisfactory for large files, but wonder about performance for restoring someone's Cyrus email directories: perhaps several thousands of discrete, small email files scattered variously across several/many large tapes? Do 3592 tapes perform significantly better than LTO3 for many small files? 3. Use Copy Tapes?: (or NOT?) Several years ago, Yale's IT management decided that we could and would afford the loss of backup data if a tape becomes unreadable because the risk of unable to restore is perceived to be very small and manageable: The probability of a client needing to restore data (failed disk/user error) is itself very small. The simultaneous probability that a tape is unable to restore that data is much smaller. If a tape becomes unreadable, whatever backups are lost are either inactive or will be recreated with the next client backup after the damaged tape is discovered and deleted. We backup to Copy tapes all Archives (might be deleted from client) and any Backups that remain 24h on unmirrored disk (BackupPool) space. Otherwise, we do NOT use Copy tapes for most of our TSM services. In actual practice, this (Almost) No Copy Tapes policy has NOT hurt us for several years now, but management is now reconsidering whether/not to apply this policy for backups from some/all of our more important clients, and is also considering the greater potential data loss with much larger capacity tapes. We welcome your experience and considered advice regarding Copy tapes. 4. Attached file: (and replies?) Attached is a txt file detailing topics we think might be of interest. We've included Yale's information and some questions. Please send back to the list if your reply is of general interest. Otherwise, reply directly to me if you are interested to discuss any of this with us. We may want to schedule some time to talk on the phone. If you prefer that, please include phone#(s) and preferred time(s). San volume crashes every time TSM backs it up
I have multiple San volumes that get backed up by TSM. We are running 5.2.3 client and 5.3.4 on Server. The problem is with one large volume ( Over 5 million Objects) , seems to send the Cluster (Novell) Server into safe mode. It offlines the rest of the San volumes ( Which run fine during backups) , as soon as it is backing up v017: Not sure how far along it is getting into V017: , but I believe it is long into it by the object count. But it is not true that all of the DB2 log files must be validated first, this information is already stored in the TSM database. The DB2 log files are archived to the archive copy pool in the management class you are using for the DB2 backup. The database backup itself end up in the backup copy pool of the same management class. It might be more convenient to archive the DB2 log files to a disk storage pool and migrate them only later on to a tape if you can't size a disk storage pool for all of the DB2 log files. The latter case is the best solution since a restore of the DB2 log files will go fast. Of course a backup of the disk storage pool must be taken to a copy storage pool on tape and should be shipped offsite. And the MediaW will disappear when the DB2 log files go to disk. best regards, Kurt Van: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager namens Charles A Hart Verzonden: di 2/01/2007 16:56 Aan: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Onderwerp: [ADSM-L] TSM DB2 API Backup Question One of our TSM environments that is Backing up Unix and DB2 data is a bit overrun at this point (lots of MediaW'). I was talking to our DB2 DBA and he states that the final step to a On-line DB2 backup is to include the transaction logs that occurred since the backup began. The DB2 log files are archived to tape from the TSM DB2 API, so the full backup now requires a tape mount to validate those logs files are complete. unfortunately these DB2 Full backups sit and wait for tape Our question is there anyway to cfg these DB2 On-line Full Backups to just Query TSM to validate the log files recvd? Re: Scheduled Operational Reports will not run
FYI: I found that when using standalone Operational Reporting, to update the password for the administrator account used when sending inquiries to a server, using the account button on the Computer Information tab page was ineffective. It was necessary to remove the server definition and re-create it. This in turn meant that accumulated reports for that server in the tsmreptweb directory were deleted; restored from backup, the old reports are picked up by default.htm in the next run. I never did find out what was 8/8 full as reported by TraceReportSvc.txt. - Margaret Clark San Diego Data Processing Corporation

re: Daylight Savings Times. This is off topic, but I know there are folks on this list in Australia that might have been through this already. The US Govt is changing the times that we will change to Daylight Savings Times from April to March. Most all OS's will require a patch, an update or a change to compensate for this change. We have been working on all our US sites to get this accomplished before March 11th 2007, but we are wondering about our other world-wide sites. They (Italy, Singapore, Japan, etc) are not changing DST for their countries, but when we change ours, and our computers transfer data between each other, might there be some confusion over the time stamps of the data if the foreign-site hosts have a different understanding of when DST for our zone (MST) is? Any help, opinions or links would be appreciated. Thanks, Ben
Resetting Passwords on Clients
It seems that the biggest reason that I get reports of nodes missing their schedules is because the scheduling services have stopped due to passwords no longer syncing up. To remedy this I usually have to reset the password, and this corrects this issue. Is there any rhyme or reason as to why this occurs. This happens on both UNIX and Windows clients. Re: Resetting Passwords on Clients
Some things that can cause the encrypted password to break: - Switching between CLUSTERNODE NO and CLUSTERNODE YES (password encryption based on host or cluster name, depending on CLUSTERNODE value). - If the host or cluster name changes (password encryption based on host or cluster name, depending on CLUSTERNODE value). - If the password is changed by means external to PASSWORDACCESS GENERATE functionality. For example, if you use UPDATE NODE to change the password, or you connect with that node name from a different machine, and subsequently change the password. - Using the same node name to connecting to two different TSM servers that have the same TSM server name but different node passwords. There are other trivial cases, too, such as changing NODENAME in dsm.opt file to a node whose password has not already been encrypted. Hi Andy, And what if the password gets expired by passexp parm? This during the scheduled back-up caused many of my scheduler services to stop on both windows and Unix and failing the running back-up. We're adding a regional recovery site to our metro recovery scenario. In the metro scenario I back up my volhist and devcnfg files to a drive that is on the SAN in the other building. Re: Resetting Passwords on Clients
Hi Karel, Are you saying that the password expires DURING a scheduled operation, and the operation subsequently fails? If so, and assuming that you are running a supported TSM configuration, you should open a ticket with IBM support, as this does not seem right to me (be sure to provide detailed recreate scenario in order to facilitate a complete understanding of the problem). Just to add a bit: Whereas this problem is said to manifest itself on Unix, it would be trivial to construct a small monitor to examine the TSM password file attributes every second or so during TSM operations and then log and alarm when there is any change to that file. The timestamp on the event could then be correlated with a position in the scheduler log, and possibly dsmerror.log; and I would also look at the Unix process accounting records to see if any rogue action was afoot at that time. Re: Off-topic post related to DST changes.
Daylight saving in Australia is a dog's breakfast (ie a disgusting mess) It is controlled by the various states, and so each lot of regional politicians has its own barrow to push. The easternmost states are all stacked north/south, Tasmania starts a month early but finishes with the rest, NSW and Victoria go first Sunday in October to last Sunday in March and Queensland doesn't do DST at all. South Australia and Northern Territory are also stacked north/south in the middle of the country normally 30 minutes behind NSW, SA does DST, on the same timetable as NSW, but NT doesn't. Western Australia takes up the whole of the western third of the continent, and despite there having been three referendums, all soundly defeated, some local idiot recently pushed through legislation that started daylight saving this year on 3 December, with about 6 week's notice of the change. So at the moment it is 12:23 in Tas, NSW and Vic, 11:53 in SA, 11:23 in Qld, 10:53 in NT and 10:23 in WA. Are we all clear on that? Fortunately I live in Queensland and am therefore above it all :) Its not as bad as Arizona though... I saw this on a site a couple of weeks back, but haven't been able to find it again to cite it. US has DST, Arizona does not have DST, Navaho Nation (entirely within Arizona) does use DST, Hopi nation (entirely within Navaho area) does not. Regards Steve Chronically confused in Brisbane Ben Bullock wrote: re: Daylight Savings Times. Thanks, Ben
RoadMap?
Is there a TSM roadmap posted someplace? Having trouble finding it.. i.e. whats the next version, when is it coming out, what features will it have? Thanks!
