Migration to new server and LAN-free backup

2007-10-11 Thread Verhelst, Luc
Hi all,

We currently have TSM 5.2 running on a standalone IBM server (7028-6C4/
OS: AIX 5200-02). We need to migrate to a new LPAR on our P590 that
runs on OS: 5300-05-CSP.

We plan to install TSM 5.4 and use LAN free backup instead of LAN
backup. Has anyone of you done this migration in the past and if so is
there procedure available.

The problem is that we have only 1 robot (IBM 3584/ 10 LTO 3 drives)
that is currently used on the old server, so testing will not be that
easy.

Regards,
Luc

Fw: I would like to scratch a copypool volume with no data on it

2007-10-11 Thread Uwe Schreiber
if you are using a TSM server level 5.3.2.0 and higher, you can use the
following command

repair stgvol volname=name of your volume - this is a not
documented command !!!

you will find the ouput of the command within the activity-log ... like
this sample

10/10/07 16:03:51 ANR2017I Administrator X issued command:
REPAIR
  STGVOLS volname=YY (SESSION:
25580)
10/10/07 16:03:51 ANR0984I Process 218 for REPAIR STGVOL started in
the
  BACKGROUND at 16:03:51.
(PROCESS: 218)
10/10/07 16:03:51 ANR4752I REPAIR STGVOL process 218 started for 1
volumes.
  (SESSION: 25580)
10/10/07 16:03:51 ANR4758W REPAIR STGVOL repaired volume YY,
database
  reference errors were found and
corrected. (SESSION:25580)
10/10/07 16:03:51 ANR4754I REPAIR STGVOL process 218 ended,
processed 1 of 1
  total volumes with 1 repaired.
(SESSION: 25580)
10/10/07 16:03:51 ANR0987I Process 218 for REPAIR STGVOL running in
the
  BACKGROUND processed 1 items
with a completion state of
  SUCCESS at 16:03:51. (SESSION:
25580)

---

if you don't want or not able to use this command you have to the
following steps before you can issue
the delete volume command with an DRM managed volume

upd vol name of your volume access=destroyed

after using delete volume you have to re-checkin the tape into your
library as scratch.

Uwe Schreiber

Hello TSM's,

I have a copypool volume with nothing on it, meaning q content - no
data. When I try to #delete volume xxx discarddata=yes - it returns
- volume contains data. When I use move data - it returns - volume
contains no data. DRM says it is in vault status.

I would like to make this volume as scratch and put it back into the
scratch pool. Any suggestions?

If by multiple criteria you mean specifying, for example, multiple MSGNO
parameters, then the answer is no. As an alternative, you can use SELECT
with the ACTLOG table to do that type of query.

Pambos -

If you mean to somehow look at all the storage pool tapes and rebuild
the TSM db contents therefrom, the basic answer is No. In such a
situation, there is only arduous, partial salvage, requiring skill
and knowledge.

Make use of TSM's facilities to assure that you always have backups
from which to recover that database, as the only real means of doing so.

Slow restore of large file to Win2003 client.

2007-10-11 Thread Mcnutt, Larry E.
Environment:
TSM server AIX 5.3 P570
TSM 5.3.3.0
Client Win2003 HP Proliant DL585 64GB
TSM client 5.3.2.2

We restored 178 GB in 7.5 hours. The restore consisted of 1 file that
is 160 GB and 25 files totaling 18 GB. The 160 GB file was on 1 LTO3
tape in a L700 library with a 2 GB fibre connection. The restore
initially started running at over 30 GB per hour and gradually slowed to
less than 20 GB per hour by the time it completed for the large file.
Then the 25 smaller files (18 GB) restored at the faster speed. The
workload was light on the TSM server and the client. Can anyone provide
some insight as to what may cause a large restore to decrease in
throughput?

Exporting the backupsets

2007-10-11 Thread Choudarapu, Ramakrishna (GTI)
Hi All,

We were creating the backupsets using virtual volumes on z/os
environment.
Now, while migrating to z/linux, we are trying to export the backupset
nodes...

The source server reports that:

10/11/2007 05:17:05 ANR0986I Process 5 for EXPORT NODE running in the
BACKGROUND processed 52 items for a total of
492,626,569,659 bytes with a completion state of
SUCCESS
  at 05:17:05.(SESSION: 8532, PROCESS: 5)

Whereas the target server says:

10/11/2007 05:17:05 ANR0988I Process 5 for IMPORT (from Server TSMLNG1)
running in the BACKGROUND processed 38 bytes with
a
completion state of SUCCESS at 05:17:05 AM.
(SESSION:
  25091, PROCESS: 5)

Has anyone exprienced this before? Where did it export the data?
I see no new volumes written to on the target server, nor any
occupancy...

TIA,
Rama

Hi Steve,

As you surmised, the 2 GB limit is not entirely arbitrary. While I cannot
formally announce or commit to anything, upping the limit is currently on

that it could also fall off the radar screen, so take with a grain of
salt.
