Re: Define vol on Network share problems.

2008-07-16 Thread Shawn Drew
The share needs to be accessible by the user that is running the TSM
service. If it is running under the system account, you have to do some
fancy windows administrator stuff to get it to work. Also, if the file
volume doesn't exist already, you have to use the "f=" option in the
command (Which you used in #3)

By the way, I can't imagine using a random access volume like this on a
network share could have great performance. Hopefully this is just a
lab/test TSM implementation?

Shawn

[ADSM-L] Define vol on Network share problems.

I am running Windows 2003 server on an IBM box. Tivoli Storage Manager
version is 5.5. I created a new Disk Storage Pool. I am trying to define
the volumes of this disk storage pool on a network connected share. I
have
a DFS share setup for the network share. I have tried running the
following
commands
1. DEF VOL diskprim1 \\domain.name.\resources\share Returned info:
ANR2404E Define Volume: Volume \\domain.name.\resources\share is not
available. Return code: 14

2. DEF VOL diskprim1 Drive letter:\share Returned info: ANR2404E Define
Volume: Volume Drive letter\share is not available Retur code: 14

3. DEF VOL diskprim1 \\domain.name.\resources\share\diskprim1_vol1

Looks like the account running the TSM Server service can't see the network
share. You either need to run the TSM Server under a different user
(it's probably SYSTEM), or change the security settings for SYSTEM to see
the network shares.

This is a classic case. SQL backups do an estimate of the size of the
backups, (ref diffestimate) If that size is exceeded, the trnsaction
fails, maybe unless nothing happened in your diskpool since the start of
that transaction (unlikely). The decision to go to the next stgpool is
made before the transaction starts, once it's underway, there is no way
back.

So the transaction fails. Unfortunately, most TDPs don't retry with a
bigger size estimate, so that night's backup just failed.

(same can happen when you have compression on and commpressalways on as
well for normal client backups)

Apparently there was not enough contiguous storage in the storage pool
to fit the large file in this transaction. Fair enough. But this
storage pool is configured to migrate into a tape storage pool, and
indeed migration was running. I thought that in this case TSM would
mount a tape for this session to write to, and not cause it to fail.
Why didn't TSM mount a tape in the next storage pool? We know there
were tape drives available. Here is the description of the storage
pool:

Well... it *is* Windows. ;-)

Less facetiously: If TSM has been configured this way for some time
and the system instability is recent, they need to review system
change records, where a Service Pack or patch installation or local
change may underlie the situation. Such temporal isolation may help
resolution.

Hi Ian,

(what happened on Sunday??)

Nothing of the sort - no traces, full privileges - I should have stated that it
is a W2K3 client.

If you watch a windows log directory after starting the dsmcad, you will see
these files get created and deleted very quickly..

Hello Storage Folk,

I can't seem to find any documentation or anyone else reporting this
files being created in the log directories.

16/07/2008 14:09 3,303 dsmerror.log
16/07/2008 14:1031,912 dsmsched.log

16/07/2008 01:3122 s2kk
15/07/2008 01:4222 s2l0

We've all seen the change in the way the scheduler updates the log files
(seems to write to temp file before appending to the actual dsmsched.log
file itself) but my customer is complaining that this machine is falling
over in the middle of the night, and I need to disprove TSM as being a
cause. I can't figure out why these files are lying around here - having
checked their contents they contain messages like:

Is there a schedlogmax defined, or any trace flag that may be configured

What ID is the client running under, does it have the privileges to

As I frequently advise, do 'dsmc q inclexcl' rather than inspecting
client options files: have TSM report to you what *it* believes your
Include-Exclude list to be, which will also pull in any server-side
specs.

exclude.dir most certainly does work with linux/unix.

But,

what I would do is do a 'dsmc q inclexcl' so you know what is and isn't
picked up by the client. Your rules seem to be fine. What exactly is the
client not doing or doing that is not up to your expectations?

Exclude /var/tmp/*

I want to backup "/" and "/boot"

In the dsm.opt I add this line: domainALL-LOCAL

/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/cciprnt.excl

On the file cciprnt.excl I tried several options as exclude.dir and more ... but always I saw the

list broken

2008-07-16 Thread Remco Post

Hi all,

I've been chasing this for a while, and it seems to be very hard to resolve. I
even got surfnet involved, who relay the adsm-l in the Netherlands and they
have not been able to help (though very willing to do so).

The adsm-l seems to be broken. Mail gets delevered to US mail accounts just
fine (I currently have gmail forward the list to my PLCS account), but I only
get about one post per week in my plcs.nl mailbox directly from the list. I've
been trying to reach the list-owner via the e-mail address that Richard so
kindly pointed out and so has Surfnet (they even know the list owner by name),
but alas, no response.

This is really annoying. I sometimes enjoy reading the list and do get some
useful tips of here, but this is not good. I'd think that the list should
function properly. Is there anyone that can contribute in some way in resolving
this issue? Contacts at marist? Both surfnet and I are very willing to help
resolve this issue, but are getting nowhere soon without cooperation from
marist.

new volumes VA5150-VA5159, and 90 of the 150 tapes in the VA5000-VA5149
 range disappeared!!!
One that disappeared was VA5000, which is one of my storage volumes. I
checked it in (status=private) and it now shows:
Library Name Volume Name Status Owner Last Use

   --- -- -- -
 B243 VA5000 Private GENTOO51
Note "Last Use" is blank (should be Data). I tried to run "AUDIT V

 ANR2017I Administrator issued command: AUDIT
  VOLUME va5000
ANR2410E AUDIT VOLUME: Unable to access volume VA5000 -
access mode is set to "unavailable".

Not good! How do I reconstruct my library volume table?

1- checkin all your lost volumes as data, the last use field will get updated
once they are used.
2- update you volumes to become on-line again (upd vol va5* acc=readw
whereacc=unav)

now, you probably lost some volumes that are scratch as well, so you'll need
some sql select to find those:

select VOLUME_NAME from LIBVOLUMES where VOLUME_NAME not in (select VOLUME_NAME
from VOLUMES) and volume_name not in (select volume_name from volhistory where
not type like 'STG%')

(now, this is untested, so be sure to verify, I'm sure that if you have export
tapes in there or backup sets, you must exclude those as well!)

if you are sure that a tape really is scratch, update that libvol.

You may want to do an audit library after all of this.
