Ugprade TSM from 5.2 to 5.5

2008-11-12 Thread Martin Panggabean

Hi All,

I'm planning to ugrade my TSM to version 5.5. Currently, I'm using TSM
Server & Client ver 5.2 and TDP for SAP version 3.3.2. My question is,
what version of TDP that is run well with TSM 5.5 and what is the best
practice to do this upgrade? Can I just upgrade it from the current
version to v.5.5 or I have through upgrade to certain version of TSM
higher than the current to do this?

Re: Ugprade TSM from 5.2 to 5.5

2008-11-12 Thread Howard Coles
Martin, I did exactly what you're planning (only I also moved to new
hardware).

Here's the very high level order:
1. upgrade the clients to a 5.3 level as its kind of middle ground. It
will work with both 5.2 and 5.5 real well.
2. upgrade the server to 5.5 (doing the upgradedb command).
3. upgrade the clients to a 5.5 level.

Step one should really be optional, but I had so many of my clients at
5.3 that it just made sense to get them all to the same level. I have
clients that I cannot upgrade so you should be fine.

See Ya'
Howard

Take a look at the Administrator's Reference at the enhanced client

I would like to schedule backups of some of our desktops for Monday
through thursdays.
Dayofweek=weekday will include fridays, and by the time our backup
window starts, most people have left for the weekend and shut down their
machines.
Clients are mostly windows, ranging from 5.2 to 5.5. Server is solaris
2.8 running tsm 5.2.10.

Aside from needing to upgrade your TSM server to a supported level, your
only choice is four separate schedules, one for each day.

backup stgpool issue

2008-11-12 Thread Tyree, David
I've got something strange going on here. If I run a backup
storage pool command from my primary pool to one of my offsite copy pool
everything is fine. It will finish whenever it is done. Same when I do a
backup to my onsite copy pool. As long as let them finish everything is
ok.

However, if for some reason I do a cancel on the process
things get interesting. I do the cancel on the process and wait for it
to finish. I do some q proc's to check to see if it's finished yet. Once
it finishes I then go back and start another backup stgpool. I get an
error saying that a backup is already in progress.

The q proc is coming back with nothing and I do a q mount just for the
heck of it and it comes back with nothing mounted. It's like a hidden
process that I have no control over and can't monitor.

I end up having to halt and restart TSM to get control again.

I'm running TSM 5.4.1 on a Windows 2003 box.

Any ideas?

Re: backup stgpool issue

2008-11-12 Thread Mark Stapleton
I suspect that some sort of timeout is involved. Storage pool backups
use a lot of CPU, and a lot of db reads to generate a list of files that
need to be backed up. I suspect that it may take some time to ditch that
queued list of files before you can start another stg backup session
involving the same pair of storage pools (primary and copy).

Re: Scheduling client backups

2008-11-12 Thread Thorneycroft, Doug
You can set up an admin schedule, or a bat file to run on Mondays that
issues the following command:
"update schedule domain-name schedule-name Dayofweek=weekday"

Then on Thursday, run
"update schedule domain-name schedule-name Dayofweek=thu"

Richard,

The following command will reclaim tapes when they are 70% empty/30% full and
run for 5 hours. It will not alter stgp settings.
As other have suggested, I run this in an admin schedule.

Reclaim stgp 'tapepoolname' th=70 du=300

Okay... but either way, how does one then execute a manual reclamation process

Percent utilized is not the same as percent reclaimable. They're apples

Jim's command alters the storage pool settings for reclamation (for the
threshold and number of reclamation processes to run).

I'd guess that your "reclaim stgpool" command isn't working because none of the
volumes in that pool have 99% reclaimable space. Your 86 tapes that are 99%
utilized may not have any reclaimable space, or may have some amount less than
99% reclaimable space. In other words, percent utilized is not the same as
percent reclaimable.

You don't indicate how you consider a tape to be reclaimable.
