Re: SQL SELECT to show what's mounted and why

2009-02-13 Thread Richard Rhodes
I don't know of a simple way to get a overview of tape drive activity from
TSM, especially if you have a library sharing environment and storage
agents. Frustrated, I wrong a script to give an overview. Below is a
sample run of the script.

If you'd like a copy, shoot me an email: rrho...@firstenergycorp.com.

Re: Strange behavior on DB(?) or Log(?)

2009-02-13 Thread Steven Langdale
Fred

I've seen this long delay before between tape mount (the process sitting
there at 0 pages written) and the actual backup. In the couple of cases
I've seen it's also whenthere have been a number of client sessions. After
reducing them the backup starts.

Is it fast once it's writing?

Thanks

Steve,

Thanks to you and the others who took a crack at our problem. After
remounting the LOG with the dio flag, EXPIRATION has dropped from 6-8 days
to 15 hours. But nothing we've tried has had any effect on the lag on DB
backups. Whether FULL or INCR there is still a lengthy delay between tape
mount and first write.

Fred,

Mounting the filesystems containing DB and log with the dio flag can make a
huge performance difference on AIX. It bypasses all the AIX read forward
and write behind stuff. Just don't trust topas afterward as it bypasses
the stats there as well.

We've got two machines which are identical in every way, same hardware,
same AIX, same TSM level, same options set, same storage pools, domains,
everything except one has the DB and Log on local disk. On this box things
run very slowly: expiration may take a week, filespace deletion creeps, and
we see this as the normal behavior

All of the operations you describe above involve database and log
transactions. Since you've eliminated everything else, I would suspect
you've got substandard local disk (or possibly a corrupt database).

Since correcting a possible database issue will take a good deal of time
and effort, have you given thought to trying something easier, such as
putting the dbvols and logvols on SAN- or iSCSI-attached disk?

My guess is that the slow startup is VSS-related.

Try adding this to your options file:

   traceflags service
   tracefile c:\somefilename

(you can name the trace file whatever you want, enclose in double quotes if
 the file name contains blanks)

Then start dsmc and wait for the prompt to appear.

After you get the prompt, quit out of the client.

Then look in the trace... while much of it might not make sense, what you
want to focus on is the time stamps that begin each line of trace output.
Look for a large gap between two trace lines, which would indicate at that
point in the trace, the client attempted to call some function and
 experienced a delay.

Alternatively, it might not be one big time gap, but lots of smaller (but
 not insignificant) gaps in time.

 Andy

Note that, on the same machine, I just installed the SQL Server TDP and
 it
works just fine, connects to the TSM server, backs up, etc. This has got
 to

Is there any chance that the DNS servers are specificed incorrectly

Problem with Open File Support

2009-02-13 Thread Yudi Darmadi

Dear all,

I have a two question here, and i need your advice:

1. On one client, I didn't use the Open File support, so the backup
schedule failed (some files couldn't back up), but if I use the open file
support, the machine stop responding during backup proccess. Is the problem
on the TSM or in the Windows' Volume Shadow Copy Service? (As far as i know,
TSM Open file support uses this windows service).

2. I have a TSM Server and also TSM client on 1 machine. I set a scheduled
backup. But it seems the backup stopped, and if i see in the task manager,
there's no dsmc proccess, and in the TSM, the server's session was idle.

Steve, this is almost certainly a VSS issue non-specific to TSM (except
that TSM uses VSS).

Put the following into a script (say, vsslist.cmd), then run it:

@echo off
echo %date%%time%
vssadmin list writers
echo %date%%time%

How long does vssadmin list writers take to complete?

I have seen issues with my db upgrade but discovered they were there

problems and at this time am trying to go through the upgrade again, but
I suspect I will not see these issues now.

I'm not one to speak for IBM but I would hope based on what others
have seen that there would be a procedure to minimize any db issues
before running the upgrade especially if the upgrade will not find them.

Having been a V6.1 beta tester (now that it has been released I guess
I can speak about it), I can confirm that as of the last update I
 have

not seen anything for zOS other than s390 Linux.

Also, they will not be supporting Linux NON-x64, which causes me
issues since 2 of my RH Linux server are not x64 capable and will
 require replacing/upgrading/merging with another server.

The organization I belong to in IBM was involved in the beta program for
TSM V6. We assisted customers in the installation and training for the new
release. I did the education for the DB Upgrade process, and also assisted
in some of the testing for it. I'd like to pass on several comments here
concerning this post.

1. IBM set a goal for the DB Upgrade process of 5GB/hr, and that is the
expectation we'd like to set. As people have said, YMMV, and we have seen
cases where customers have gotten much better than this. There are a lot of
factors that can influence the upgrade performance, but the expectation or
goal is 5GB/hr.
2. The final code is not finished yet. Remember, announcement was this
week, but GA is not until end of March. There are still a few enhancements
that development is considering to possibly speed this up.
3. I would strongly suggest attending a Storage Technical Exchange being
given 2/26 (8:00 am PST) on an overview of TSM V6. This is NOT a session
that will go into details of the functions of V6. It is more of a session
to explain the considerations that should be thought about before starting
the migration to TSM V6. We're going to talk about things you may want to
consider such as hardware requirements, software requirements. space
requirements, and upgrade techniques to the new database. Lots of
questions are being raised here about what this migration will involve. I
would suggest asking them at this session.

Dear all,

I have a two question here, and i need your advice:

1. On one client, I didn't use the Open File support, so the backup
schedule failed (some files couldn't back up), but if I use the open
file support, the machine stop responding during backup proccess. Is the
problem on the TSM or in the Windows' Volume Shadow Copy Service? (As
far as i know, TSM Open file support uses this windows service).

2. I have a TSM Server and also TSM client on 1 machine. I set a
2scheduled
backup. But it seems the backup stopped, and if i see in the task
manager, there's no dsmc proccess, and in the TSM, the server's
session was idle.

Mmm. I don't know if I'm supposed to still be embargoed, but I guess
that if they're talking about it at conferences I can too..

Data point: my 40G DB;

Extract database: 0:41
Insert database: 7:20

This was part of an exercise where they were having me test with a
slightly optimized version too, and that insert time was 5:06.

Re: TSM Client GUI hanging at initializing

2009-02-13 Thread Steve Stackwick
Andy,

I'm not at the customer anymore, although I might get remote access to the
client at some future date. Believe it or not, I actually ran that command
(duh, never made the connection) yesterday morning and I eventually
cancelled it because it never came back. So I must say your diagnosis seems
spot on. Also, Richard Sims pointed me to dsmerror.log this morning, and it
showed:

02/12/2009 22:25:52 cuGetFSQryResp: Received rc: -50 from sessRecvVerb
02/12/2009 22:25:52 fsCheckAdd: received error from server query response
02/12/2009 22:25:52 ANS5250E An unexpected error was encountered.
   TSM function name : vssInitBackupSpec
TSM function : fsPrepareFilespace() returned '-50'
   TSM return code : -50
   TSM file : vssback.cpp (1577)

So, definitely a bug. I guess it's time to hit the Knowledge Base.

Now, what to do? I''ve told the admin that they may have a problem with

 quotes if
   the file name contains blanks)

Then start dsmc and wait for the prompt to appear.

After you get the prompt, quit out of the client.

Then look in the trace... while much of it might not make sense, what
 you

Look for a large gap between two trace lines, which would indicate at
 that
point in the trace, the client attempted to call some function and

Alternatively, it might not be one big time gap, but lots of smaller
 (but

Well, the Preparing for V6 info says the upgrade process Upgrades the
existing DB to V5.5.x. It also says that if your DB is prior to V5.5.x
and you need to go back, you would have to restore your DB vs if you were
at V5.5 you could just restart your server.

The recommended starting point is V5.5.2no suprise!

Re: Supported multi-version TSM?

2009-02-13 Thread Mikael Lindstrom
To communicate to a 6.1 library manager you don't have to be at 5.5.2
server level

Regarding the upgrade to 6.1, if you don't wanna go to 5.5.2 before the
upgrade I suggest that you take a copy of your DB and make a test upgrade
and play around a little
If you are at 5.3.6.3 the upgrade will take some extra time due to several
changes in the 5.5 code but I guess it will be supported

The future will tell...
