TSM 6.1 Licensing
Hi, Is TSM 6.1 similar to 5.5 in licensing? I mean, is it based on tsmbasic.lic and other .lic files? Thanks, Mehdi
Re: TS3200 library encryption
Neil, This is from the TS3200 setup and operator guide: The LTO Ultrium 4 Tape Drive supports host Application Managed Encryption (AME), Library Managed Encryption (LME), and System Managed Encryption (SME), using T10 encryption methods, for SAS and Fibre Channel drives only. Data encryption is supported with LTO Ultrium 4 Data Cartridges only. Encryption is also supported with library firmware version 4.0 or higher. Carol Trible wrote: "It seems that long term customers tend to stick to the command line, but new customers who start with the Administration Center like it, so I would reccomend giving it a try." I started administering TSM in 2006, and my first task was to install the Administration Center for the first time at this site. I've used it ever since. I am currently using the 6.1 release to administer two 5.5.3.0 servers and one 5.5.1.0 server. (Incidentally, I had trouble finding the software for the new Admin Center, and so did the first three IBM staff members who tried to help me. Although the installation process tells you it is "Installing... TSM Administration Center", the product name you have to look for now is "Tivoli Storage Manager Reporting and Monitoring".) The 6.1 Admin Center is genuinely better than previous releases, and twice as fast, but it's still agonizingly slow for longer inquiries. Some queries are impossible when using the Admin Center command line interface, because they die before returning results. For the last few months, I've had a Servergraph tool to use as well, and inquiries that take only seconds with Servergraph take ten minutes using the Admin Center. I'd certainly recommend that new TSM administrators try out the Admin Center - it's so useful - but you still need a LOT of patience to use it. - Margaret Clark Systems Programmer, San Diego Data Processing Corporation
TSM Fastback DR Hub Server
Greetings ADSMlings, Thanks for your help! I will be implementing TSM Fastback servers at 2 remote sites. These 2 servers will be protected by a TSM Fastback DR Hub Server back at the HQ. My issue is that the remote sites have T1 WAN capabilities while the sites have ~70GB and ~250GB of data respectively. My question is regarding what the instructor referred to as a "Full Data Shipment" used to get the initial snapshot from the remote locations to the DR Hub server where the DR server would be installed at the remote site, the fist snapshot created from the protected Fastback server and then trucked to the DR site. In this case we will NOT be able to do this since the client will be housing the DR Hub server on an existing server attached to an existing active SAN. Can I use some sort of transportable (maybe USB) drive to create the repository and then hand carry it to HQ and pull it into the DR Hub server? If so, what would be the process to accomplish this? Since you are using IBM LTO drives, you would be using the ibm "lin_tape" drivers instead of the TSM drivers. Check out the manual here: ftp://index.storsys.ibm.com/devdrvr/Doc/ IBM_Tape_Driver_IUG.pdf Under the linux section, it has the device names you should use. Plenty of other information as well. On the Linux box I built I loaded, Redhat5, TSM 6.1.1.1 and the IBM drivers and it looks like that went ok. I can't however figure out the path to these devices the same way AIX gives them to you with the lsdev command. The IBM ce downloaded a dump of data from the tape drive and send that on to the higher level support folks. They asked to update the firmware, which was just release. This help us greatly. Our tape drives are installed in an IBM 3584 (aka TS3500) so the tape drive dump can be gathered either via the CE's laptop tools or via the IBM library web interface. If you are using IBM's drivers, you should be able to download the drive dump via a utility supplied with the driver code. The IBM readme document S1003097 for LTO4 shows a very large number of problems that have had to be corrected, suggestive of more, ongoing. The stuck tape situation may suggest a problem managing the mechanics and/or timing of drive operations. Given the mechanical malfunction which results, I'd have your CE attend to the next event, to examine the conditions logged in the drive's memory, to try to uncover the cause. The inability of an OS command to effect tape dismount indicates a serious problem. If the CE can't be gotten in time during the next event, see if you can have the operator get at the drive to record any error codes on its panel. Make sure the CE pores over the sense bytes you're getting from the drive. Richard Sims --- The information contained in this message may be CONFIDENTIAL and is intended for the addressee only. TS3200 library encryption
I am setting up a small environment for one of our affiliates - P520 SAS attached to a TS3200 with LTO4. Does anyone know if a TS3200 with SAS LTO-4 drives can provide library managed encryption using IBM's EKM? I ran across an IBM web page that said Library managed encryption is supported on FC drives in the TS3200 but can't find the page again. I need external encryption because I am exporting data to these tapes and application managed encryption does not apply to exports. Thank you Neil Strand Storage Engineer - Legg Mason Baltimore, MD. Re: Move data
"delete volume 000139 discarddata=yes" did solve that issue. The tape is back on track. Found 3 more tapes that had this behavior, but did the same on them. Happy again!! /Larsa -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ads...@vm.marist.edu] On Behalf Of Richard Sims Sent: den 20 juli 2009 18:06 To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: [ADSM-L] Move data Thanks for the additional info on that vaulted volume. With an Access state of Offsite, the Move Data should operate on local primary pool volumes containing the same data. Whereas that didn't happen, it calls into question the state of the online volumes or whether the TSM database contains entries for any files on that offsite volume. I'd start by performing a Query CONtent on that volume, and then add DAmaged=Yes, to see if something strange going on there: it's not impossible that the volume % utilization suggests data on the tape but, due to problems, the database has no info for any files on the tape. For completeness, perform queries on the storage pools themselves, to assure no odd state. If a repeat of the Move Data produces the same non-results, attempt on similar volumes to see if there is a more widespread issue, and see if any further Activity Log messages are produced to lend clues. Hopefully, the library is not now returning bizarre indications to the TSM server for volumes in certain locations in the library. You might want to review the TSM Activity Log at restart time, when it would have tested the inventory of the library. Re: TDP Exchange Error
Yudi, Did you see any outstanding error messages from Exchange in the event viewer? Did you get additional information from the logs in the TDPExch directory? "tdpexcc q exchange" showed that circular logging was disabled; so TDP shouldn't be assuming otherwise. You may want to work on this issue with your exchange admin before restarting the exchange server. If non-conclusive, enable tracing, run a manual full then incr or diff backup, provide the trace to IBM for further investigation. Please Yudi, let us know once you find out what caused your issue. Steven - There is no documented option for pruning the CAD log. (CAD is minimalist.) Whereas dsmcad does not keep the log open, you can perform an 'mv' to a backup file name (e.g., dsmwebcl.log.20090722) in a slack time, and it will start a new log file afresh when it next needs to log something.
