You can try to add in dsm.opt at the beginning (important!) of include/exclude
list:
INCLUDE "*:\...\*" NOT_DEFAULT_CLASS
INCLUDE.SYSTEMSTATE ALL NOT_DEFAULT_CLASS
This will fix your problem for sure.

Subject: [ADSM-L] Backup issue...

Hi,

I have a setup of TSM server and client v5.5.

I have configured two management class. one is default and the other is
non-default.

I performed selective backup in non default management class. It was
successful. Two different storage pools for backup for both management
classes.

But when I try to perform incremental on the default management class,
server is trying to mount from both the storage pools from default and
non-default management class.

This is making lot of IO operations and witting to both management class is
happening.

Please suggest how to resolve the issue.

Kiran.

I think you have run selective backup for specified list of directories (maybe
with subdir=yes).

If you are running incremental backup without parameters, you need:

1) check dsm.opt file for included domains like C:, D:, SYSTEMSTATE, etc;

2) check include/exclude list for specified domains. It should be
include.backup for all domains.

In other case, come files will come to default management class.

Scheduler problem

2010-04-12 Thread Grigori Solonovitch
Hello TSM Admins,

I have faced a little bit strange problem with TSM Scheduler and I need help
very much.

I am sorry for very long message, but all information is required to understand
problem.

Daily schedule does not start automatically with SCHEDMODE PROMPTED in dsm.opt.
On TSM Server I have a lot of messages like:

Date/Time: 04/13/2010 05:50:07 Message: ANR0403I Session 8271 ended for node

They are coming from schedule start time till the end of backup window and, as
a result, backup is missed.

At the same time, in dsmsched.log after starting scheduler everything looks
fine:

Rick:
I believe the intermin storage mentioned the proxy needs is for the snapshot
repository. The data is stored or served up here before the TSM client can send
it to the TSM server.
This data residing at this repository is temporary and dissolved after being
sent to the TSM server, so it's size can be created based on how many and how
large of a full VM backup you will want to run.

I do not believe vmware offers any streaming directly to a tsm server without
the use of this repository.

I am investigating the "proxy" backup for VMware vSphere 4 VMs and the
redbook states that the proxy must have adequate space allocated for
interim storage of the backup data (images, files, etc.). Is there a way
to stream the data directly to the TSM backup server which has EMC SAN
as primary storage? Would prefer to try and eliminate the additional
cost for proxy storage.

Am I off my rocker, or does anyone know if this is possible/supported?
All feedback welcome...

Thanks!

Enable "backdelete" for the node, then use the client GUI to delete

In an internal build that we are working on, we have proven that we can get
the CLI to work with SSL. But this internal build has not been released yet
(and there is not target at this time). We are taking requests for this
feature because as you might have noticed, when SSL is enabled, the web is
"slower" then when SSL is disabled. If we continue to take on requests, we
can definitely add this functionality.

Yes, I agree with the documentation. We will update appropriately.

Thanks

Khanh,

We have discovered that if you have SSL enabled for your ALMS sessions, the CLI
does not work, but rather results in a certificate error. When we called this
into support, they indicated that it was working as designed (even though there
was no documentation to this effect). It'd be nice if a certificate could be
provided to enable this to work with SSL. Or at a minimum, the restriction
should be documented somewhere..

TSM 6.2 OS and Hardware Requirements

2010-04-12 Thread Lesli Jordan
We are preparing to upgrade from TSM 6.1 to version 6.2. I am a little
confused about the requirements.

We are running 2003 standard SP2 as the OS. The documentation says you
need 8G of memory.

and that this OS is supported. However, the OS will not recognize 8G of
memory unless it is 2003 Enterprise.

Do I need to upgrade to Enterprise before I can upgrade TSM?

Thank you!

directly to another server. Most of the exported files are being
written to an HSM disk pool and HSM tape pool, but some to the primary
disk and tape poosl. All the filespaces being exported are dong this.
I see this by running 'q occ ' on the target server. The
same command on the source server does not show any files in an HSM
pool.

The node being exported is running Windows 5.0.2 and TSM version
5.5.2.6. It is not running HSM, to my knowledge. The source TSM
server is at Linux version 5.5.2.1. The target TSM server is at Linux
version 5.5.4.1.

What circumstances could be causing this? I am baffled. The primary
disk pool is not hitting HighMig, and it wouldn't migrate to
SPACEMGPOOL if it were.

Does this CLI only work in Windows or does in work in AIX also?

First, the TS3500 CLI team would like to thank you for your feedback. It is
greatly appreciated as we have all intentions to continue to make the tool
better.

After taking your feedback to the team, we discussed options and concluded
that a -v or --verbose (default is the quiet mode) would be the best
solution. In other words, you will no longer get the "human attention
information lines".

We have posted a new version on the website. Please try it at your
convenience.

2010-04-12 Thread Rick Adamson
I am investigating the "proxy" backup for VMware vSphere 4 VMs and the
redbook states that the proxy must have adequate space allocated for
interim storage of the backup data (images, files, etc.). Is there a way
to stream the data directly to the TSM backup server which has EMC SAN
as primary storage? Would prefer to try and eliminate the additional
cost for proxy storage.

Am I off my rocker, or does anyone know if this is possible/supported?
All feedback welcome...

Thanks!

Hi All,

We have a Client who has a ESX host (OS: VMWare ESX vSphere 4) running

Client to back it the physical machine kernal up if so anything special
we need to know especially as for as dsm.opt include/exclude statements?

2.6.18-128.ESX

If anyone can point to some specific documentation or link regarding
this feel free to add.

Thanks in advance!

Well, it's _in_ the docs. :) I seem to recall I read it, but did not
learn it, and then hard-knocked myself.

Re: V5.5.4.1 recovery log issues

2010-04-12 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU
Considering the official page for what 5.5.4.1 fixes is a single apar
"encryption issue", I saw the need for that since we are going to
implement encryption as soon as our TS1130 arrives to "upgrade" the last
non-encrypt capable 3592.

As for 5.5.4.2 (which I plan to implement), I have had numerous problems
with server-to-server exports either hanging or crashing and leaving an
export session hung/non-cancelable. Also includes other fixes to address
encryption. Another apar in 5.5.4.2 talks about mount requests failing
due to a timing issue, which I have also experienced!

If you have had any long time experience with IBM
patches/maintenance/apars/ptf (for MF folks), which I am sure you have,
you know as well as I do that often the apar description is not 100% your
symptom but close enough and often fixes your problems.

Zoltan -

Your postings on your upgrade have not said why you went beyond the
standard, fully tested maintenance level (5.5.4.0) to take your chances
with a patch level (5.5.4.1). A patch level is intended to address a
specific set of circumstances, as experienced by one or a few customers.
One should not go there without specific need for the patch, and being
accepting of possible side effects in order to restore functionality as
addressed by the patch. This is not to say that this patch level itself
is known to be responsible for the log pinning issue, but you are taking a
chance with a patch.

V5.5.4.1 recovery log issues

2010-04-12 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU
Well, this is becoming a very annoying and crazy problem.

Since upgrading my Linux TSM server from 5.5.3.0 to 5.5.4.1, I am having
constant problems with the log filling and pinning. The latest set of
tools and diagnostics being used to monitor the log say little to nothing.

I implemented the suggested cron job to monitor the log%used. For the
past few nights, it has been hitting 95%+. It usually seems to back down
on its own and then spike again.

However, the "show logpinned" doesn't show any session/process that is
pinning the log. The most common message from "show logpinned" at
5-minute intervals is:

The recovery log is pinned by a dirty page in the data base buffer pool.
Check the buffer pool statistics. If the associated transaction is still
active then more information will be displayed about that transaction.

I am going to alter the script to include the other 10-commands suggested
in the PERL script from IBM.

Any thoughts on what is going on?

As I said, I never had these problems before 5.5.4.1. I have held off
upgrading my other 5.5 servers until I get a handle on what is going on.
Looks/smells like a defect to me.

Nothing in my workload has changed within the past 2-months.
