Re: LAN-free backup in a logical partition
Hi, this link can be useful. http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=0uid=swg21239546 In many cases people are using VIO server, if this is your case you will need to add hbas dedicates only for LPAR lanfree Backup. With NPIV the HBA presents multiple unique WWNs to the OS, this is a solution to share the Hba among Lpars. Then LPars can be TSM Servers or LanFree Clients. In my opinion, if you need high performance backup you will need to add a number of hbas depending on the performance you needed. It is possible to share disc a tape traffic in the same hba. The problem is you don't get the ,more optimal performance, for not production environment it is cheaper. Can this partition use TSM LAN-free backup in any way? (tape, GPFS, SANergy,...) How about if the client uses NPIV? If yes, is NPIV virtualization completely transparent to TSM/SAN equipments? Regards, Mehdi
Re: LAN-free backup in a logical partition
With VIOS v2, VIO servers can virtualize HBAs. So it is possible to run LAN-free via a virtualized HBA. I haven't done it yet, so can't speak to performance. David Remco Post r.p...@plcs.nl 8/19/2010 5:32 PM VIO servers can't route tape
Re: LAN-free backup in a logical partition
NPIV works well with both disk and tape, but make sure you take in account the fact that the virtualized hba you get on your client lpar is not the same kind you get on the VIO. The output of lsdev -Cc adapter is ; Fcs0 Available C2-T1 Virtual Firbre Channel Client Adapter Fcs1 Available C2-T1 Virtual Firbre Channel Client Adapter Backing this is the only NPIV supported HBA op POWER, the dual port 8Gb Qlogic (FC5735) This might be usefull to know driver or other dependancy wise, also realise that your fc switches need to support NPIV and you will need soft zoning on your switches for the NPIV zoning. -Oorspronkelijk bericht- Van: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ads...@vm.marist.edu] Namens David E Ehresman Verzonden: vrijdag 20 augustus 2010 14:19 Aan: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Onderwerp: Re: [ADSM-L] LAN-free backup in a logical partition With VIOS v2, VIO servers can virtualize HBAs. Windows excludes
I noticed that the recommended default excludes for windows does not have c:\windows\temp or c:\documents and settings\user\local settings\temp Any particular reason why these shouldn't be excluded. Netdrive
Anyone have experience backing up Windows machines that are using NetDrive (http://www.netdrive.net) to map drives on other machines? Gotchas? TSM sees/reports the filesystem as NDFS? So far the backups seem to be running OK. The owner has been performing manual backups, so far. I am guessing these drive-letters wont be seen as local and need to be manually INCLUDEd for scheduled backups? problems with STK SL500 library and drives constantly going offline
We have an STK SL500 tape library with 4 LTO4 drives in it and it seems to randomly take all of the drives offline. STK/Sun has replaced the robot and controller card (more than once) and nothing seems to help. This has been going on for several months now and I'm at a loss to figure out what is causing it. The SL500 and it's drives are all attached to a Brocade DS-4900 switch. Nothing has changed on the switch in over a year as putting maintenance on them is a real chore since we have so many devices attached to it. The only message I see in the act log is: ANR8848W Drive WRLTO4-1 of library WRSL500 is inaccessible; server has begun polling drive. (PROCESS: 832) As best I can tell, it is a hardware problem as even rebooting the robot or power cycling the whole box doesn't fix it. The robot stays parked at the top and never seems to go through the audit it usually does when it is rebooted. If it is indeed a hardware problem, I realize there isn't much that can be done but they have replaced almost all the parts in the box and it keeps happening. Anyone else ever have similar problems? John
