the backups schedules without error

Re: Looking for SAN/tape experts assistance

2010-09-22 Thread robert_clark

There is a "by-id" section in the IBM Tape device driver installation and user
guide (for LTO). Looks like it hooks into the RHEL udev stuff.

I would personally try to find the same guide for TS1120 and send you a link,
but I'm fighting an EDL problem at the moment.

Thanks,

I see your "exclude" statements below. I do not see any "include" statements.
Do you include the directories for your SQL data? If you perform a backup
command manually does it work as expected?

policy set

What pain . . . .

I have a node that I need to move to it's own domain with special default
mgt classes. For a base I copied the existing domain that it's in to a new
domain and started changing the inactive policy set - deleting mgt classes I
don't need.

Opps . . . I'm deleting stuff out of the origional domain inactive
policyset.

I caught myself after deleting
several archive mgt classes. I haven't touched the ACTIVE policy set (ie: I
didn't activate the inactive policy set I was editing). Now I need to
recover the deleted archive mgt classes.

I could just reenter the deleted archive mgt classes, but I'm wondering if
the easier thing is to just delete the inactive policy set and copy the
active policy set to the name of the inactive I deleted?

Thanks

Re: Determining devclass FILE values (a.k.a. New Server - Part Deux)

2010-09-22 Thread Zoltan Forray/AC/VCU
Very interesting discussions about FILE devclass and configuration
whoas..lots of guess-work and differing opinions. Sounds like FILE
adds another level of administrations (reclaims?) and not sure if it will
really benefit me.

Now I am not sure if this is the right way to go. Maybe I should just
stick with what I was doing - 200-300GB volumes using DISK devclass.

We don't plan to do de-dup (higher-up decision - they don't see the
value/savings vs overhead due to our mix of servers types/backup types).
The disk is an LZ for backups and then migration to tape when the stgpool
gets close to full. Very little as far as restores go.

Additional opinions?

There is a VERY BIG difference between DISK and FILE. DISK device class
has RANDOM access and reclamation is not required at all. FILE device
class has SEQUENTIAL access. File system is used to keep virtual volumes
very similar to tape volumes. Volume status is moving like this: EMPTY -->
FILLING --> FULL. After expiry data usage of full volumes can be reduced
from 100 up to 0 (up to one small file on volume) and this volume will be
not available for writing (totally unused disk space!). Only reclamation
can move volume from FULL to EMPTY and make it available for writing
again;

My idea was to create volumes large enough to hold all or large portions of
entire files of this size. I haven't been doing this long enough for mass
expirations to take effect yet so I don't know for sure how it's going to turn
out.
I don't use any diskpool buffer. I send data straight to a Datadomain 880.

This is an AIX server with a 7 TB jfs2 filesystem with 1381 files in it.
For now, no downside found.

Why have you changed to bigger FILE volumes?
And do you use a DISK based storage pool as 'buffer'?

I thought it was available because support told me to upgrade a windows 2008

I don't see it on service.boulder.ibm.com

I found the 6.2.1.0 base under "maintenance" and 6.2.1.2 (for Windows)
under "patches" but no 6.2.2

Why do you think it is out/available?

Hello,
the 6.2.2.0 client is not available on the ftp site yet.
The target for the 6.2.2.0 client is December 2010.
Keep in mind that the target is subject to change at IBM's discretion.

Interesting concept Stef...just the opposite of what I did to fix the problem.
I'll give this a try also.
Have you seen any downside to this due to the large number of files in a given

I think this is particularly an issue with TSM volumes implemented within file
systems, where disk block locations are "pot luck". (Formatting multiple disk
pool volumes in parallel, explicitly via dsmfmt or implicitly via Define
Volume, can cause fragmentation, as warned by the TSM Performance Tuning Guide
and Technote 1248324.) Implementing disk pools via raw logical volumes, where
your platform supports that, helps avoid fragmentation issues, particularly
where disk pool caching is turned off.

De performance of a disk based storagepool will be fine at the start but will
degrade over time due to fragmentation, I have seen this happen on large
permanent use diskpools.

I would advise only using DISK based storagepools for temporary storage (soon
to be migrated) or for situations were performance is no issue.
We are seeing good results (disk usage/data stored) with a 10-20GB volume size.

Yes, I had DISK pools before, but I have migrated all of them to FILE to be
able to use TSM Server de-duplication. In my opinion, everybody can use DISK
storage pool as less painful till you do not need de-duplication.
Now about performance:
- I am using JFS2 file systems on FATA disks (RAID5 and RAID6) and I was not
able to see big difference in performance after migrating DISK --> FILE.
Actually IBM stated the same in some documents;
- I think disk performance is a matter of disk interface (number of adapters,
adapter type, number of paths, switches, etc) and total number of disks (RAID
type, number of RAID arrays, number of disks in RAID array).

Also, do you have a (fast) DISK based volume in front of the FILE storage
pool? We do this so we can allow lots of client backups coming in and use the
number of migration processes to control the data streams to the FILE storage
pool.

We also have 2 very very very busy 5.x servers with DISK storage pools. We
are trying to migrate them to FILE based storage pools. We started with 100GB
volumes but this was a disaster. Total storage is 17TB and 32TB.
The server was running reclamation for the FILE based storage pools, backup to
a remote FILE based storage pool and backup to a tape based local storage pool
at the same time. Not good.
When we changed the FILE based storage pool to 5 GB volumes, the result was
much better. There was less reclamation needed because it is less likely that
a volume has a status Filling.
