Re: TSM for VE 6.4 Questions/Recommendations

2013-01-25 Thread Hans Christian Riksheim
Hi,

good tips.

Any way of excluding backup of those machines that are not
running(guestState: notRunning) with any rule?

Hans Chr.

 Hi Ken,
We have been using TSMVE 6.4 for a couple months, I wouldn't call the
following a set of best practices, but they work well for the restore
 service we provide.

File restore services are still provided with TSM Extended Edition.
Nothing different there. Recovery of the first disk on virtual machines is
provided with TSMVE 6.4. Should disaster strike, the frst disk is restored
by TSMVE, then files and directories are restored with TSM Extended
Edition. We only snapshot the first disk.

Our standard virtual machine is created here with a first disk of 60 GB
and additional disks for data storage. VM admins are encouraged to install
their OS on the first disk. We snapshot the first disk only by adding this
statement to dsm.opt for each data mover; INCLUDE.VMDISK * Hard Disk 1

If the first disk of a virtual machine is greater than 60 GB, that guest
is excluded from snapshots by appending '-NB' to its display name in the
vSphere client. Then, '*-NB' [ star dash NB ] is added to the exclusion
filter in the TSMVE plug-in when a scheduled or run-now backup is created.

We use one data mover per cluster, and put the data mover on the cluster
it backs up for performance reasons. We exclude the data mover from the
backup using the filter, and back it up with TSM/EE. Each cluster is
scheduled for backups once a week, and two versions are kept. Our largest
cluster has 12 hosts and about 420 guests. Our 'vmlimit' options are fairly
conservative, and could change with more experience. Here they are:

 VMMAXPARALLEL 8
 VMLIMITPERHOST 0
 VMLIMITPERDATASTORE 1

 So far, so good.

2013-01-25 Thread Vandeventer, Harold [BS]
I've created a report without too much trouble that satisfies my end user
community.

But, I need to put a calculation for yesterday in the header.

I tried an _add_days(Today(),-1) expression but if fails validation.

Anyone know how to determine yesterday's date?

Thanks.

[BACLIENT] - Exclusions / Inclusions on Windows 2008 R2

2013-01-25 Thread Meunier, Yann
Hello,

I want to make a backup the fullest possible on a Windows 2008R2.
I have a lot of backup errors and I can not find anything on what is saved by
the systemstate.
Does anyone have recommendations or ideas for exclusion / inclusion by default?
Sincerely,
Yann

Tape library possible replacement - push/pull

2013-01-25 Thread Zoltan Forray
We are starting to examine the idea of replacing our aging 3494 (installed
1995) due to difficulty in getting parts and having more frequent outages
due to robot issues.

Since we have 17-TS1130 drives, the natural transition would be to a
TS3500/3584.

If we go down this route, one issue might be the floorspace/placement,
which might require a weekend eject-push-pull-reload.

Never having dealt with any tape library other than the 3494, I am trying
to collect as much info as I can on doing a swap-out.

Is it as simple as defining the new library, moving the drives/paths to it,
changing the devclass to point to the new library, checkin everything
(scratch/private)?? Am I missing anything?

TS3500 libraries are often equipped with a sort of virtualization
facility, called ALMS, that allows setting up one or more logical
libraries within a physical TS3500. If you end up with this facility
installed, you will have to deal with a two-tier checkin process:
getting volumes into the right logical library, and then getting
them recognized by TSM. I think you can configure the library so
that it associates volume number ranges with specific logical
libraries and automatically puts newly inserted volumes into the
appropriate logical libraries.

If you use the tape drive encryption capabilities, you will need
to use the TS3500 management interface to enable encryption. My
experience with TS3500s and encryption involves application
managed encryption. I don't know whether there are any additional
complications if you use library managed encryption or system
managed encryption.

Re: Tape library possible replacement - push/pull

2013-01-25 Thread Prather, Wanda
Yep, pretty much that simple.

Check the tapes out of one library, check them into another.
No more complicated than if you are going to a DR site that has a 3584 rather
than a 3494.
TSM doesn't care.

There are some differences in the library management:

If you are talking to the 3494 library interface via TCP/IP now, that changes.
(Some people use the TCP/IP interface, some use a serial cable.)
TSM talks to the 3584 library via the atape drive over the fibre, it has its
own device number/path.

Thomas already mentioned that the 3584 can be partitioned into logical
libraries.
If you have multiple TSM servers or other apps using the 3494, you keep them
separated now by 3494 category codes, those go away.
You have the logical libraries now instead. Carts get assigned to the logical
libraries based on a volser range filter in the library interface.

This tells you how to find out what is saved by systemstate:

http://www.mail-archive.com/adsm-l@vm.marist.edu/msg93783.html

The best list of exclusion/inclusion for default is the one provided by the
client install itself.
Use the client setup wizard to add them to the existing dsm.opt file.

Start the GUI
From the top menu pull down utilities Setup Wizard
Help me configure the client options file Next Next
Update my options file
Click Next until you get to the page Recommended Include/Exclude list Select
All Next
On the Common File Exclusion List page, normally select nothing at all,
unless you have a specific requirement.
Click Next until you get to the point you can click Finish.

The include/excludes will have been added to your dsm.opt file.
