Re: VMWARE VMDK size limit

2014-11-13 Thread BT İşletim ve Teknik Destek Bölümü
After comminicating with local and remote IBM teams, that's what I learnt:
 - TSMVE doesn't support VMDK disks larger than 2 TB (and therefore cannot
backup them), although VMWARE VMDK file size limit is now 64 TB (and we already
have some larger than 2 TB VMDK files). It have to something with snapshots.
 - There is no info or roadmap about when will this limitation be lifted
 - But if you want IBM to do it (their advise), you can open RFE procedure to
ask for a design change http://www.ibm.com/developerworks/rfe/?BRAND_ID=90

Before doing #3 I want to know what do you think about this.

Subject: VMWARE VMDK size limit

Hi,

If I understand correctly, as of VCenter v5.5 VMWARE VMDK files size limit grow
to 64 TB, but TDP for VMWARE has a 2 TB limit. Do you know when TDP for VMWARE
will support bigger than 2 TB VMDK file size ? Because as of now we have
several. I asked VMWARE admins if they can give less than 2 TB VMDK files and
later concatenate them as a Dynamic disks inside the Windows, they say more
VMDK files will increase hypervisor load, is it true ?

Restriction:

Each individual VMDK involved in a backup operation
cannot exceed 2 TB. If a VMDK exceeds 2 TB, the backup
operation fails. To prevent a failure, you can skip
processing the VMDK by specifying the vmskipmaxvmdks yes
in the Tivoli Storage Manager backup-archive client
options file or during the dsmc invocation.

So the workaround for this would be setting the option VMSKIPMAXVMDKS to YES.

Caution must be used with this option.
With this option set, the client will not fail the backup of any virtual
machine that has disk greater than 2TB, but will continue the backup, skipping
the disk that is over the Tivoli Storage Manager supported maximum size of 2TB.

Hi Tuncel,

Here are a few options for you:

- Use in-guest backups in conjunction with the VMSKIPMAXVMDKS
- Use FCM for VMware exclusively for these large VMDKs
- Allocate 2 TB disks (or less)

As for helping us gauge interest in this...
Instead of creating a new RFE, there are a few of them out there
that you can go out and vote for to increase the priority.

Hi,

once upon a time there was a TSM Support Portal where one could easily navigate
to client downloads and APARS.

I can not seem to find it now. It does not show up in Google. I have given up
finding it through the Support Portal Home page.

Alternatively, could someone point me in the direction of the ftp repository
for BA downloads?

Hans Chr.

corrupted db on test system

2014-11-13 Thread Tyree, David
We are running TSM v6.3.1 on a test box and we had a drive fail
and it has a corrupted database now and won't start.

I did the "dsmserv remove db tsmdb1" to get rid of the old
database and now I'm about to start the actual database restore.
While I was waiting for the offsite database backup tape to be
brought back onsite I issued the "dsmserv restore db" to see what would happen.
It failed like I expected because it couldn't find the tape in the library.
At least it's seeing the library and all the drives.
My question is how do I check in that tape to the library?
I can physically put the tape in the library but until TSM knows that it's
actually checked in I'm stuck.
TSM won't see it until it's checked in but TSM is down.

How would I be able to read that tape once I get it on site?

The restore process gets all its information about tape volumes from the volume
history file and possibly the device configuration file.

One approach recommended by some TSM sites is to use a device configuration
file modified to show a manual library and then use a library
control utility to mount the tape when requested.

If you want to use a device configuration files that shows the actual library
type, the process depends on the type of library.

For a SCSI library you would need to get the tape into the library and add a
volume location record for the volume to the
device configuration file.

For a 3494 I think you would just need to put the volume in the library and use
a library control utility to set the category
appropriately.

Re: corrupted db on test system

2014-11-13 Thread Tyree, David
I manually put the tape in the library and then did some hacking around in the
devconfig file to tell TSM just where the tape was.

Fired off the restore db command again and I saw the library mount the correct
tape.

Now I'm seeing a db restore running so I think I'm in business now.

I understand that a db restore takes about 2 to 3 times as long as a db backup
so it should finish in about 3 hours or so...

Thanks for pointing me in the right direction.

Re: TSM VE Backup Fails for 1 Guest

2014-11-13 Thread Prather, Wanda
115 is just a failure to snap.
Log on to Vcenter and see if you can snap it manually from VCenter.

If it won't snap from Vcenter, TSM can't snap it either, and you will have to
treat it as a VMware problem.

If it will snap manually (and I'm assuming this is a Windows guest), then the
problem was getting it to snap at that particular time. VMware calls MS VSS to
quiesce a Windows machine before a snap. Usually if it won't snap it's because
it won't quiesce, and if it won't quiesce it's usually because there is too
much I/O going on .

Find out what is going on with the guest at that time and if it happens every
night, try scheduling at a different time of day.
As a last resort you can ask the VMware guy to disable the link between VMware
and MS VSS, see if that works. But I'm not sure what all the implications of
that are. I'm sure you can't use the SQL-aware VE function if you disable VSS.

Good luck!

Thank you very much Stefan. I found this site very useful.
At the same time, FTP site is not stable - it is quite difficult to download
big files.
It just gives "download interrupted" and starts from the beginning after
resuming.
What could be a problem?

Hi,

once upon a time there was a TSM Support Portal where one could easily navigate
to client downloads and APARS.

I can not seem to find it now. It does not show up in Google. I have given up
finding it through the Support Portal Home page.

Alternatively, could someone point me in the direction of the ftp repository
for BA downloads?

Regards,

Hans Chr.
