Spectrum Protect Plus deduplication ratios

2020-07-10 Thread Matthew McGeary
It's a new day, so it must be time for more SPP questions. 

For the folks running SPP, what deduplication ratios are you seeing? So far
I'm still in the testing phase, with approximately 10 VMs that I'm running
backup testing on. Two of the VMs have similar database footprints (one is qa
and one is dev, but the data is a close approximation of prod and each other.)
However, even after a full backup of each system plus three incrementals,
overall data deduplication is essentially 0, my ratio is sitting at 1.05. I
would think that, because the databases are so similar (not to mention that
they're the same Windows version) that I'd be seeing much better dedup than
that. Compression is doing quite well, hovering at 2.7, but was hoping to at
least get 1.5 or 2 to 1 dedup.

Thanks and have a good weekend!

Re: Spectrum Protect Plus Backup Performance

2020-07-10 Thread Matthew McGeary
Thanks Steve,

I've been digging into it a bit more with the help of IBM support and I forgot
a very important setting. Currently I have a vsnap combined with vadp proxy,
but I neglected to set the softcap for the vadp. Consequently, backups were
running on all available cores and crowding out the vsnap server. Setting the
softcap based on the blueprints greatly improved overall throughput. Single VM
performance was up and overall throughput was in excess of 400 MBps.

So that goes to show, RTFM. 

Matthew,
Not sure if this is your issue or not, but verify that you are using nbd
transport. Hotadd performs better on initial full backups, but the overhead
involved in setup/teardown makes it a poor choice once you start doing
incrementals consistently.

Subject: [ADSM-L] Spectrum Protect Plus Backup Performance

Hey folks,

Starting a deployment of spectrum protect plus using virtual vsnap/vadp systems
backed by v5030 RDM storage. The vsnap system has been sized based on the
recommendation of the blueprints for a 100TB repo and all of our VMWare
infrastructure is hosted on Cisco UCS with multiple 10G interfaces per blade.
Doing backup testing today and single backup performance is atrocious,
averaging just 22 MB/s.

I've got a large TDP for VMWare deployment and I am familiar with setting
parallelism with that product and we see much better individual VM backup
performance with that product. Is there anything similar I can tweak for the
Plus deployment? I can't find anything in the docs and the current performance
makes me quite nervous as we push this product forward into production in the
next month.

Any assistance or experience with a similar all-virtual deployment would be
helpful.

Thanks
