NT schedule is pending

2001-05-20 Thread ABDULSALAM ABDULLA

I'm trying to add an NT client for the first time. I have downloaded the
client packages and installed the
client, then changes the dsm.opt files and started the services on NT. The
client is working file, which means if I go to client and start backup from
GUI of from command line it's working OK. But the automatic schedule is not
working, it means I have created policy and schedule and assign it to that
client, the schedule stays in pending mode and it does not execute till it
failes.
I'm getting this error in dsmsched.log. this might not be related to this
problem, but anyway..
05/20/2001 14:36:11 ANS1818E Schedule function not allowed in loop mode.

Add date to Archive description

2001-05-13 Thread ABDULSALAM ABDULLA

Hi all,
How do I add DATE in Archive description. I want my archive to hold brief
description of which archive is and
to display the archived date and time. i.e.
if you go to retrieve you see "POTLINE System on May 13 2001, Time:
17:00:00"
This is possible if I hard code it, i.e.. -DES='POTLINE System on May 13
2001, Time: 17:00:00'
But I want to automate the date and time so everyday the date and time
portion of it to be taken from server or client.

Thanks,
Salam

ADSM Archive issues

2001-05-08 Thread ABDULSALAM ABDULLA

We have two magstar attached to ADSM server. I want to keep one drive for
daily backup and the other drive
for daily archive. So we have two sequential storage pool which are
3570BKPOOL and ArchiveTapePool.
3570BKPOOL is the first Magstar 3570C device with has 2 drive and is used
for primary pool. Magstar 3570C is assigned to ArchiveTapePool which is
2nd Magstar 3570C, which we need to use it for Daily archive. I want to
archive certain client's data everyday and move the tapes off-site, then
insert new tapes for the next day. Is this possible? Can I insert new tapes
in the same slot? The new tape can have same Label or should have
different? If possible how are going to label the new tapes, different
names. Note: daily archive is planned to be kept for 28 days before we can
recycle it again. If new label should be given, how do we
retrieve it for particular day, is it only by "Descriptions"? What other
suggestion you can give me?
For example I have a Archive Pool which is linked to Sequential Pool of 5
tapes, [Tape1BTape5B], say the first day the archive command of several
clients has field all 5 of them, Now we need to move them out and replace
them with 5 other new tapes.

3570 - tape library

2001-05-02 Thread ABDULSALAM ABDULLA

Hi,
Currently we have ADSM which is using magstar 3570C as backup device. This
device has two derives rmt3.smc and rmt4.smc.
Both of those drives are assigned to 3570CLIB automated library. We have
another 3570B magstar with another two drives [rmt1.smc, rmt2.smc] which
are assigned to 3570LIB, and not in use.
Now we are planing to assign the rmt1 and rmt2 to 3570CLIB and get rid of
the other library [3570LIB], and have them all
under one library. What are the steps I should take?

Thanks for your help,
Salam

as sequential pool (3570). I have assigned 4 permanent tapes to this
storage pool. So all the archive can go to those
4 tapes, i.e. TAPE16, TAPE17, TAPE18, TAPE19. I want to checkout these
tapes on daily basis and keep it offsite, while
load 4 new tapes in the same slot and label it same, TAPE16, TAPE17, TAPE18,
TAPE19. Is it possible? How?
If not what will be the alternate solution?

Thanks,
Salam

Richard, which means the version I'm using does not support Backup Set?
Right?
Then, what is the alternative. Can I, somehow archive my entire primary
pool to some tapes or not?
If yes, how? If no, what is the best other practice.

Thanks a lot,
Salam

On one of our implementations we have a storage pool which is getting
refreshed everyday, full backup. and we need
to archive each day of that primary pool and save it for 30 days. The copy
pool will be having same retention as primary, right?
I'm not sure, is there a way to assign different MC to the copy pool?

looking for a right solution

2001-04-22 Thread ABDULSALAM ABDULLA

We have ADSM Server for AIX-RS/6000 - Version 3, Release 1, Level 2.40 using
Magstar 3570 with two drives [total 19 carriages]
Currently we have 60 GB of incremental data, to backup daily. Because of not
having enough space on 3570 we have limited the backup to 7 version only.
Management is asking to automate the whole company's backup process, and
asking me to come up with a right solution.
Now we will be talking of backing up almost 150 GB of daily incremental,
with 30 version. Also we need to assign some libraries for archiving.

Does anybody have almost similar site?
Which tape drive should I recommend?
Do I need to upgrade ADSM?
Any other issues to consider?

If you are aware of any study cases on Internet of a similar case, please
recommend it.

Appreciate your help

Re: Backup Policy

Thanks Steve for help, the problem which I'm facing is that the management
wants 28 copies of the file to be available
don't care it whether its on primary pool or archive. I can't keep them on
primary pool because of not having enough space on tapes. I was thinking to
have for 7 days, and end of 7 days to archive them all and clear the primary
pool again, and let it go for the next 7 days using archiving. The issue is
that I should have 28 version of data, since these files are changing
everyday. Is it possible?

I want to write a backup policy to backup my filesystems for 7 versions. On

28 days. The 8th day will over write the first day, and so on. But again
by the end of the forth week on 28th day, I want this copy to be kept in
save for one year. Also I need to keep one copy of any deleted file for the
period.
How can I do that? What will be the value of the following options? Please
let me know if any other options required setting.

Backup Retention (Grace Period)
Versions Data Exists
Versions Data Deleted
Retain Extra Versions
Retain Only Version

Appreciate your input.

Re: Big file is failing on HP-UX

2001-04-03 Thread ABDULSALAM ABDULLA

It is running as root. I don't think the permissions was causing this
problem. Because next day I run the schedule only for that
file and it did go through.
It was giving [ANS1311E Server out of data storage space] message even
though I had tons of scratch tapes.
What could be the problem, I noticed this happen quite regularly.

Thanks,

Re: Big file is failing on HP-UX

2001-04-03 Thread ABDULSALAM ABDULLA

Where can I find PTF 3.1.2.90? Do I need to apply any previous PTF before
applying this one, or this
will contain all?

Thanks,
Salam

Big file is failing on HP-UX

2001-03-31 Thread ABDULSALAM ABDULLA

Looks like [line6.tar] is failing, it's saying backup is complete but the
file size for every version is Zero. Could it be the size? How can I
resolve this problem?
I'm on 3.1.240 and Client is
# uname -a
HP-UX potline6 B.10.20 A 9000/809 67308342 two-user license

Following files are getting created daily.

# ls -l
total 411472
drwxrwxrwx 5 root sys 11264 Apr 1 07:09 line5
-rw-rw-rw- 1 root sys85084160 Apr 1 07:11 line5.tar
drwxrwxrwx 13 asouth users13312 Apr 1 06:22 line6
-rw-r--r-- 1 root sys125419520 Apr 1 06:24 line6.tar
drwxr-xr-x 2 root root 8192 Jun 10 1996 lost+found

Thanks a lot,
Salam

Policy talk

2001-03-20 Thread ABDULSALAM ABDULLA

Hi All,
It might sound simple for some, but I'm having doubt. To my understanding
the whole policy and management classes are controlled by these 5 options
under Policy Domains and backup Copy Groups
- Backup Retention (Grace Period)
- Versions Data Exists
- Versions Data Deleted
- Retain Extra Versions
- Retain Only Version
Ok, I have some filesystem which I want to backup them for one month with 30
version, (these files are changing everyday)at the end of the month I want
to move the latest copy to a copy pool and keep it off-site for a year.
What will be the value of the above options? Any other concern?

Appreciate your help,
Salam

TSM on OS/400

2001-03-10 Thread ABDULSALAM ABDULLA

Hi,
Can we use AS/400 as TSM server, I heard only ADSM 3.1.2 will support AS/400
and
the new TSM can not be used on AS/400.
Any light.

Thanks,
Salam

Re: Swapping Tape Drive

2001-03-07 Thread ABDULSALAM ABDULLA

Hi Miles,
I did replaced the tape drive without much changes, I changed Recording
Format to 3570C instead of what we had
which was 3570, till I got your e-mail made me wonder, Why it should be set
to 'drive' and not 3570C? we are using
the green tapes. Another question, can we use mixture of red and green
tapes for backup/restore?
Appreciate your input,
Thanks, Salam
