Hi

I had the same problem. The solution is to use client 8.1.4.1

Subject: [ADSM-L] Unable to backup SP database after 8.1.5 server/8.1.4 client
update

Hey folks,

I'm in a bit of bind, did a update to 8.1.5 on a pair of remote servers as a
way of easing into this new security stuff and working out the kinks before it
rolls out to the larger servers. Here's what I did:

Server OS: Windows 2012 R2

  1. Update client to 8.1.4 on the SP server machine itself (I back up some
network shares that are mounted on the SP server for backup purposes
  2. Update server to 8.1.5

After the server update to 8.1.5, the SP database backup process fails. I get
an RC=30 in the db2diag and a ANR4588E in the actlog. Support has pointed me
to this technote: http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg22009265 but
the dsmsutil.exe referenced in the note DOES NOT EXIST, so I'm not able to run
the update command to re-set the node password for the DB backup node.

So I'm pretty stuck, and support hasn't been much help over the past four days.
I'm starting to get antsy that these SP servers haven't had DB backups and I'm
going to have to start deleting archive logs to keep them running, which
doesn't make me happy. I've tried uninstalling the client, following the
technote as closely as I could, and using the dsmcutil.exe provided with the
client to try and reset the DB backup node, but nothing has worked so far to
correct this issue.

Anyone else run into this problem?

Re: manually set repltcpserveraddress for clients from server

2017-08-08 Thread Anders Räntilä
You should use the SET FAILOVERHLADDRESS on the target server. Then the
primary server will pick this up and distribute the new address to the clients
(after the first replication I guess).

If you have symmetric replication you set it on both servers, but each server
should specify its own public address.

Great, there is a solution!
Strange thing is that the client still places the old IP in it's

No! Export/import doesn't work with container pools.

You can replicate the data to another server - to any type of pool - and then
replicate it back.

If you can run "dsmc backup vm ..." you have not upgraded the client. You

If you try to run the command on a client version 8.1 (without ISP4VE) you
will get:

we have upgraded to 8.1 and run our vm backups exactly like before. What do
you mean that "dsmc backup vm" is legacy? Will this method of doing VM
backups be discontinued in future versions of the product?

Hi All,

We are planning for a migration of our current TSM environment to Spectrum
Protect 8.1 instances, which are deemed to be running on a Power Linux machine
(Power S824L).
I'm however unable to find the corresponding server software on IBM passport
advantage site ... The latest version available for download for such a
platform is TSM 7.1.1, as well as a maintenance level 7.1.7.
Does anyone have knowledge on if SP 8.1 for Power Linux is available somewhere,
or on its release date if still not existing ?

Thanks a lot for any feedback !

Cheers.

Re: TSM Server on CentOS Linux

2017-01-20 Thread Anders Räntilä
Regarding TSM server on Centos, or other unsupported platforms

For a backup installation you need:

- hardware for a small fortune
- software licenses for a big fortune
- Installation and configuration work - a lot of hours
- Education which costs money

The goal with the project is to be able to get the data back if it is lost.
It is essential that you have support when you can't get the data back because
of technical (or human) problems.

The cost of a RedHat license is a very, very small fraction of the overall
cost of the project. You can perhaps save 1% of the project cost by using a
"free" operating system.
The downside is that you are on your own when "the sh*t hits the fan". I
personally think it is very well spent money to buy a RedHat license for the
TSM server.

If you are doing lab/test/training then Centos works fine, but a production
environment should have a supported platform.

Yes they do! But only the last echo.

The last command is an "echo". I have never seen an echo fail. It will always
return 0. The return code of the script will the return code of the last
command.

Re: 3 Generation (GFS) Backup Schedule setup using TSM

2016-12-06 Thread Anders Räntilä
Hi,

Question: 19 copies of the "same" data. Each copy 500GB. Tape library used a
storage. Would like a cheaper solution.

Let's start:19*500GB is 9½TB.
Disk drives are up to 6TB today.

The data will fit in 2 disk drives - without using dedup and
compression.

Apply dedup and compression and the data will probably fit in a USB
memory stick (1TB).

The obvious answer is: This is 2016 and tape is dead since many years!

If you skip the tape library and use to modern design with container pools you
will save a lot of money. Both on the hardware (tape libs are not cheap) and
most important on the cost of licenses.

David,

We're able to saturate our 1Gbps link to our DR site during stgpool protect
processes.

The trick is to specify a relatively high number of sessions (50 in this case)
to stick-handle around the latency. We've also enabled the sliding TCP window
on both source and target and raised the buffers high enough for the servers to
allocate an 8M window size.

Our before-dedup intake is around 15TB a day, which translates to around 1-2TB.
With two protect processes scheduled to run at 1:30 am and pm, they tend to
run to completion in 2-3 hours.

Re: TSM server 7.1.0.100 patch - readme MIA?

2014-08-12 Thread Anders Räntilä
This patch is the first opportunity to test an upgrade using the new
installation manager. I did two upgrades today and the results are:

TSM 7.1 Windows 200R2 was upgraded using the Installation Manager GUI. No
problems.

TSM 7.1 Linux was upgraded using console (text) mode. The installation manager
could not upgrade the instance "tsminst1". It asked me for a password, but did
not accept it. After some debugging I found that installation manager is
trying to do "ssh tsminst1@localhost" and login using the password given by me.
The password was correct, but sshd was configured to refuse logins using
passwords (I only allow login using public/private keys). After I changed
/etc/ssh/sshd_config to allow password logins (PasswordAuthentication yes) the
upgrade went smooth.

What bugs are fixed in this update? I have no clue! Where is the README file?

Re: Client Autodeployment

2011-04-05 Thread Anders Räntilä
I have tried the autodeploy feature and like it. Yes it has been problems,
mostly because IBM failed to keep the ftp-server compatible with the autodeploy
feature (wrong case in a file name and later a corrupt xml-file), but now it
works.

I recommend everyone to try it. It is easy to setup and use from admin center.
You can use it from the cmd-line, but I would start with the admin center. The
wizard will help you to get every detail right the first time. Later you can
"steal" the commands that admin center is using and do it from cmd-line.

Actually it is more or less standard TSM that upgrades TSM. Import node,
Scripts, dmsc retrieve, schedules and reports to actlog. There is nothing
really magic. Just pure TSM.

IBM: When you release a new client or XML-file to the ftp-server, please test
it first! (Or send me an email and I will test it for you).

Re: Tsm v6 migration question

2011-03-23 Thread Anders Räntilä
My experience from the latest upgrades are that the database will

grow by 10% when upgrading from 5.5 to 6.2.2.2.

2 days ago upgraded a 5.5 server to 6.2.2.2 and this happened

with the database size:

**

*** ---> Q DB F=Dfrom TSM 5.5

**

Available Assigned Pct Max.

Space Capacity Util Util

   (MB)

- - -

  120,000 120,00 74.2 74.2

This is 120GB*74.2% = 89GB used

**

*** After the upgrade to 6.2.2.2

**

 Database Name: TSMDB1

Total Size of File System (MB): 737,233

Space Used by Database(MB): 97,216

All the upgrades I've done during the last 6 months show the same pattern.

When TSM 6.1 was released IBM said the DB would grow approx. 3x (300%),

but that doesn't seem to be the case today.

Of course if you start adding features like dedup the DB will grow. I

have one installation that was 40GB in 5.5 and today is around 800GB.

This growth is mostly caused by dedup (add 1TB of DB disk and save 75TB

of stgpool disk....)

Subject: [ADSM-L] DB backup on 6.2.2 server - Error in vendor support code at
line: 377 rc: 610

More fun adventures with DB2

Trying to run the first DB backup on a new 6.2.2.0 server that has been running
fine, so far. This is an offsite psuedo-DR server that stores DBSNAPSHOT
backups from our other production servers.

Considering it only holds 20-objects, I wasn't in any hurry to perform DB
backups. Now, I got some strange message about the DB being >80% full (not
sure why since the filespace for the DB has over 90GB free and the DB is only
using 90GB) and I realized I needed to run DB backups to clear the logs and
such.

No matter what I try, I get:

2/10/2011 11:54:22 AM ANR2968E Database backup terminated. DB2 sqlcode:
-2033. DB2 sqlerrmc: 610 .

Looking through /home/tsminst1/sqllib/db2dump/db2diag.log, I see all kinds of
interesting messages:

Error in vendor support code at line: 377 rc: 610 (I thought this
was interesting considering IBM IS the vendor in both cases)

Media controller -- Generic error (not much help here - I tried the backup to
both a local SAN FILEDEVCLASS and to another TSM server)

SQL2033N An error occurred while accessing TSM during the processing of a
database utility. TSM reason code: "". (when, I guess it got the "610"
reason code from the "vendor error" message)

Your thoughts, suggestions?

The only discussion I found via Google that was close was from Andy and a
Windows server config issue but it didn't seem to relate (these are Linux
servers)

auto deploy 6.2.2 client

2011-01-25 Thread Anders Räntilä
Hi

I 'm having problems with the auto deploy feature in Admin Center 6.2.2.
There seems to be a problem with case sensitive filenames.

Admin Center succeeds with downloading the older clients, but not the 6.2.2
client. The file names Admin Center tries to download are:

ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/client/v6r2/Windows/autodeploy/v622/6.2.2.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX32.exp

ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/client/v6r2/Windows/autodeploy/v622/6.2.2.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WinX64.exp

But the filenames on the ftp server are (WINX / WinX ):

ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/client/v6r2/Windows/autodeploy/v622/6.2.2.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WINX32.exp

ftp://public.dhe.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/client/v6r2/Windows/autodeploy/v622/6.2.2.0-TIV-TSMBAC-WINX64.exp

The older versions of the client packages are named ...WinX... on the ftp
server and downloads without any problems.

Has anyone successfully auto deployed the 6.2.2 client?

(Yes I can download and move/import/auto deploy the packages manually)

Best regards,

Anders Räntilä

SV: [ADSM-L] TSM handling of already compressed files

2010-05-13 Thread Anders Räntilä
I'm not sure I got your question right, but...

> I found out with some experimentation that
>TSM would take twice as long to backup a 60 GB compressed file as
>a 60 GB uncompressed file.

- A LTO2 tape drive can write data at 40Mbyte/s.

- A LTO2 tape drive can do hardware compression. Assume it does 2to1.

If you send a 400Mbyte uncompressible file (already compressed) it will write
the data in 10 seconds.
40MB/s on the fibre/scsi , 40MB/s to the tape and 400Mbyte goes to tape.

If you send a 400Mbyte 2to1-compressible file it will write it in 5 seconds.
80MB/s on the fibre/scsi , 40MB/s to the tape and 200Mbyte goes to tape.

It is normal that a compressed file of the SAME SIZE as an uncompressed file
takes twice as long to backup.

SV: [ADSM-L] define drive without defining a library

In TSM a drive is always in a library. You can however define a manual library
in which you are the robotics

SV: [ADSM-L] What IP address does the Client use to contact the server?

2009-12-23 Thread Anders Räntilä
Hi

> q) Is there some way to get the BA client to list the IP address

> it's trying to use?

It is using tsm4.fenetwork.com. From inside tsm you can't see what ip# it
resolves to, but here are a few other methods:

   Ping tsm4.fenetwork.com

   Nslookup tsm4.fenetwork.com.

Or start a dsmc session (try to start at least) and use

   netstat -an | grep 1800

If you don't trust your name service you can use "tcpserveraddress ip#"
instead.

BUT: "Session rejected" looks like the client talks to the operating system on
the machine that runs the TSM server, but the server isn't answering on the
port (1800). The server may be down, or you have reached the maximum number
of sessions. (hint: q status).

Merry Christmas

Ämne: [ADSM-L] Ms windows cluster and tsm questions

Looking for experiences, dos, don'ts, etc. for using tsm to back up a ms
windows cluster.

I've read the sections in the v6.1 client manual, but know little or nothing
about microsoft clustering.

This is strictly a standard BA client setup, sql or exchange clients not
involved.

I've been asked about how feassable and workable tsm backups are in a cluster
environment.

Any and all help welcome.

Unpack 6.1.1.1 on Linux

2009-06-12 Thread Anders Räntilä
Now TSM 6.1.1.1 is here, but. I can not unpack it. Is this a "Read the
manual !!! " or is the file corrupt?

Linux Centos 5.3

I have downloaded the file twice, but still the same problem. Any clues what

11/30/2047 00:00:00

2009-06-08 Thread Anders Räntilä
I have a test server with TSM 6.1.1.0 (Linux Centos). It did run fine for a
short while, but then suddenly all database backup tapes started to get the
date 11/30/2047 00:00:00. This causes the "delete volhist type=dbb todate=-3"
to fail since 2047 isn't passed (yet).

There is a flash on this problem.

Flash 4 Jun, 2009: Tivoli Storage Manager V6.1.1 fixpack release may
incorrectly record the "Date/Time" field for the volume history file
<http://www.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?rs=1019&context=SSSQWC&context=SSGSG7&dc=D600&uid=swg21388750&loc=en_US&cs=UTF-8&lang=en>

The flash isn't very informative.

My question is how do I remove the database backup tapes. Right now the server
is down because the log went full when all available tapes got stuck with
"2047" status. I guess I can get some extra log at get the server to start,
but it will soon run out of log again if I can't get the db backups going.

Thanks

Anders Räntilä
