which one is more accurate count?

2010-08-10 Thread Avy Wong
Hi tsm experts,
In order to get an accurate count of the storage capacity used by all
the nodes, I thought if I go about using select statement #1, I get the
storage usage of from each storage pool, add them up, will get me an
accurate count or rather simply run # 2 will do the job?

1) select vu.node_name, ao.total_mb, count(distinct vu.volume_name) as
tapes, ao.total_mb/count(distinct vu.volume_name) as "AVG MB/tape" from
volumeusage vu, auditocc ao where vu.stgpool_name='YOUR_POOL_NAME' and
vu.node_name=ao.node_name group by vu.node_name, ao.total_mb order by 4

2) select filespaces.node_name,sum(PCT_UTIL * CAPACITY/100) as
"TOTAL_CAPACITY(MB)" from filespaces group by filespaces.node_name order by
"NODE_NAME""

You need to either pay for licensing at the host or client level. If you
pay at the host level you can ignore the VM's. In most cases it is cheaper
to pay for the host, however if you have hosts with very few VM's it may be
more attractive to pay for each VM as if it was a physical machine. You
will need to decide which is best for your operation.

How would you account for multiple VM running on a single physical machine?
Assuming that each VM has a TSM client installed.

Is there a way to find out the pvu of each client node being backed up on

Just curious Richard, what are the side effects? It is a one time thing and
at the time I was working with and IBM with a PMR number, she did give me a
document to follow it, but also suggests a quick way to do it is put the
nodename to point to the target node on the dsm.opt, of course whatever it
was, make sure changing it back.

simply change the nodename in the dsmopt to point to the target node, then
I see all the backups of the target node. Thanks both for helping.

You can do a delete file space "del fi /adsmorc" on the TSM
server, it will be removed immediately. You can also rename the file
space "ren fi /adsmorc /adsmorc.org" then when he takes his
next backup it will come back under the /adsmorc fs as defined in his
tdpo.opt

Hope this helps, not too sure how the rename file space impacts his
ability to recover using the control files as opposed to a catalog, but
if he doesn't need the backup based on the control file I suppose it's a
moot point.

Take Care,

Charles

I find out the DBA did not use catalog on the Oracle database side,
instead he uses control files for the db backups, but because of this,
we cannot sync the tivoli side backup, and removing data outside the
retention time will have to be done manually. While he is creating a
new database backup using the catalog this time, I need to get rid of
all those unneeded backup data. I either delete it manually, not sure if
this is possible on the TSM Server side,( almost think it is not
possible) or redirect the new backups to a different FSID, then give it
sometime, then I can just delete the obsolete FSID. Not sure if this is
possible at all. Thank you for your help in advance.

Re: Remove exclusions

2009-12-07 Thread Avy Wong
Thank you Howard for your response. I submitted a PMR to IBM to get help. I
found out two things:

>From the 'q inclexcl' out put " Excl Directory C:\adsm.sys Operating System
.." This directory is excluded via the operating system by default. I guess
this is part of the defaults in the newer TSM client. Prior to sending in
the email to ADSM forum for help, I did check the dsm.opt as well as going
through the Baclient GUI under 'preference' to see if I can fix it from
there but nothing and yet it keep pointing to adsm.sys folder. Later to
find out it is not the exclude problem.

The dsmerror.log shows a failed 12 error everytime it hits this.
'C:\adsm.sys\EventLog\Microsoft-Windows-Forwarding/Operational.evt'
I found out the real hold up was the registry key. The solution IBM
support suggestion is to update the following in the registry from

 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog
\Microsoft-Windows-Forwarding/Operational]

  to

 [HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\Eventlog
\Microsoft-Windows-Forwarding-Operational]

Now all is happy,.Not a creature was stirring, not even a
mouse Happy Christmas to all, and to all a good-night

Or, edit the Client Options file associated with this client. Those are

viewing backup verisons on Linux

2009-09-24 Thread Avy Wong
Hi,
I know that you can view all the backup versions using the gui on
windows by selecting " Display active/inactive files" . In
Linux,

[r...@someserver bin]# dsmc q backup
-subdir=yes /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/

.. I only see the most recent backup copy.
Is there a way or command I can see all the backup versions?

Thanks,

In ADSM QuickFacts I provide a list of known contributors to database
utilization.
Do obvious things such as assure that expirations are running to
completion, that obsolete filespaces are not hanging around, etc.
Rigorous ongoing administration prevents most problems.

I think your problem has no relationship with cash ratio:
" The database utilization is too high. 85.4 > 85 Consider a database space
trigger or increase the size of the database."
Just increase database size to have less than 85.
Cash ratio has to be as high as possible.

The Recommendation you cite is for "database utilization", not for "cache
hit ratio". Your cache hit ratio looks healthy, at 99.1%. I believe that
the warning for database utilization is a warning that your database is
getting full, and that you need to do something before it fills up
completely.

From my experience, the Client OS Level which TSM captures is the
basic level, which identifies the OS generation, rather than deep
details. In Unix, such basic info is obtained via the uname() system
call, and in Windows via the os() call.

Hi Avy,

We've seen this when the node has a duplicate file space name. For
example, if a Windows client had a non-unicode file space that was not
converted to Unicode, but instead created a new Unicode file space might
cause this.

While you could construct a SELECT statement to identify duplicate node
names, I think it would probably run a long time if you have a lot of file
spaces. Easiest thing to try:

   select node_name, filespace_name from filespaces
select distinct node_name, filespace_name from filespaces

Redirect the output of each to a file. Then diff the files.

If that doesn't identify the nodes with duplicate file space names, then a
PMR might be the best way to go.

Best regards,

Andy

licensing question on TSM Extended Edition

2008-06-11 Thread Avy Wong
Hello,
I understand the calculation of PVUs and how to derive the $$ for the
licensing fees for a node (server) be registered and backed up on tivoli.
I have a cluster failover (window os) , one of the server houses two ips
( one is a floater ip) , two nodes using different dsm.opt files, both
registered on tivoli, do I have to pay two license fees even though it is
the same box? I was told that once the node(s) are live wired onto tivoli,
licensing fee will be charged. I am not sure if we have to pay twice
because of using different node names for failover.

Thank you in advance.

Avy

We were all at the bottom of the learning curve once, most of us multiple
times as we move into new areas of our careers, and sometimes we get stuck
and need to ask questions. But your questions usually have quite obvious
answers that are easily answered by reference to the manuals.

Please, think for a moment about the problems that you have, search the
copious documentation that is available and also trawl the internet
resources, the TSM wiki, Richard Sim's quickfacts and a google search. If
you have done that and are still perplexed, by all means ask a question
here, but please try yourself first. You will learn more and understand
more that way.

Respectfully

Steve.

The storage capacity of any medium is fixed: conceptually, it has a
certain number of "byte storage cells" and no more. Compression
allows you to represent the original data in fewer bytes, and in a
virtual sense "get more on a tape".

An LTO2 tape has a fixed "byte storage cell" capacity of 200 GB. You
can't write 201 GB to it, but you can reduce the data by compression
such that it takes up less space. Tape drives provide transparent
compression in hardware to make that possible.

Zoltan,
I guess there is really no way to put a define number to the storage
capacity. It will still be based on data being compressed or not ?

The label info states the NATIVE and COMPRESSED capacity. The compressed
capacity assumes a 2:1 ratio.

However, as with all compression/compaction, YMMV. For instance, I have
some LTO2 tapes that TSM says contain >700GB of data since the data was
highly compressable.

Hi Andrew,
I have uninstalled TSM client 5.5 and reinstalled a lower version
5.4.2 and the DB2 worked wonderfully. I don't want to take a chance to deal
with the Apar issues, especially I don't have time to troubleshoot on a

putting 5.5 on a window 2003 box with DB2 on it. Thanks again.

Hi Avy,

My bigger concern is the APAR I cited... once you have resolved the rc 610
issue, you will run into that APAR, which will not make you happy. Hence
my recommendation to stay with 5.4.2 if possible.

I see you are not too far from my old stomping grounds, Colchester, CT.

Andrew,
Yes, I am currently working with IBM Support Erich Schnappauf to try

The return code 610 says that the message catalog (dscenu.txt) cannot be
found. I suspect you have the DSMI_DIR environment variable configured to
point to the old location, so that is why the problem occurs.

HAVING SAID THAT, you should be aware of a new APAR that was just opened,
IC56403 (text below). As the APAR text says, it can theoretically any API
application, but so far we have only seen it with DB2 on Windows.

I strongly recommend using the 5.4.2 API for the time being unless you
must remain at 5.5 for some reason. If you must remain at 5.5, you should
open a PMR with IBM, cite this APAR, and ask for a workaround.

Best regards,

Andy

TSM API 5.5 ENHANCEMENTS CAN RESULT IN STACK OVERFLOW
Due to the introduction of enhancements at the TSM 5.5 client
code level, the stack requirements for the API increased. On
certain platforms, invocation of the API when the available
stack is constrained can result in a stack overflow and prevent
loading of the TSM API. This problem has been observed most
commonly with DB2 in the Windows environment but it may occur on
other platforms and with other software that uses the TSM API.

Re: upgrade TSM 5.5 client causes the content of API folder disappear?

2008-05-02 Thread Avy Wong
Thanks Jerry. I thought I am the only one experiencing the hiccups from the
TSM client 5.5 upgrade issues with DB2.
The following is what IBM said .

DB2 has to be restarted. If it has not it must be. This is because the DB2
logger manager loads the API in its memory when it runs its first log
archive and keeps it in memory thereafter (as opposed to an actual backup
of the databases, which loads the API into memory at the start & unloads it
at the end), You'll need to bounce DB2 to have the DB2 logger manager
reload the new API into its memory.

I have requested for an emergency reboot Monday. We had a similar case on
another box, the dba has to uninstall and reinstall a lower version to get
the DB2 to work again. I will keep you informed.

We have had the same issue with the API Dir and DB2. Support has a work
around, the fix hasn't gone through all the official tests but it's just
the API compiled without a couple of the enhancements made in 5.5
(enhancements that didn't affect the API anyway). Several customers have
used it with success, but like any diagnostic build, it's still at your
discretion to use. You will need to contact TSM support to get the fix.

Hello,
When upgrading TSM client to 5.5.0.4 causes the content of API folder
to disappear. This is a window 2003 standard edition. TDP is DB2.
The upgrade is the typical install, but causes the DB2 have exit error.

The problem we are seeing when we upgrade the TSM 5.5.0.4 client from
5.3.4.4 is that the new API does not work with the DB2 user exit program.
It functions well with the 5.3.4.4 client. Once the upgrade completes we
start seeing the following errors when issuing the commands below:

c:\> db2adutil query full
Initialize environment failed to ADSM return code 610.

c:\> db2 backup database toolsdb use tsm
SQL2062N An error occurred while accessing media
"C:\program files\IBM\sqllib\bin\db2tsm.dll". Reason code "610"

I was told that I do not have to upgrade the TDP piece at the same time.
How do you resolve this problem? I noticed the all the stuff inside the API
folder disappear. All that is left is dsm file. I do not see BIN, DLL,
icc32, INCLUDE, LIB, OBJ, SAMPRUN, SAmPSRC, apienu.dll, descenu.txt,
descenu.txt.bak2, dsierror.log, dsm.opt, dsmerror.log

Any idea?

Hi Avy,

It is not installed by default, so you need to do a custom install,
and select it (that is, assuming 5.5 is not different in this area than
previous versions, as I have not yet done a 5.5 install).

Note that only windows does this. The unix client install it by default.

Re: backed up nodes

2008-03-16 Thread Avy Wong
What started my question to ask this forum's expert is suddenly I was told
that I have to keep track of all the nodes being backed up on tivoli.
I still have to clarify with IBM licensing if this is to do with nodes
currently being backed up on tivoli based on processes? ip, or node names
etc.. We have so many nodes moving on and off tivoli, that if currently
being backed up is the key, then there has to be a way that running a
simple command can help me get an idea. I thought simply 'q occupancy '
just tells you the total storage occupied on each node. The node could
easily occupied storage space but no longer being backed up. Sorry about
the confusion.

I think Avy's question should be rephrased to "Which nodes are currently

In which case the select statement should be against the associations

I have a large system, and it takes about 3 seconds to get results

Often nodes are created and registered on tivoli but not being backed up. I

The standard return code numbers are documented in the client manual.
I add some verbiage in the ANS1512E message description in ADSM
QuickFacts.

Wacky numbers such as the -1073740972 you cite are usually the result
of improperly written customer PRESchedulecmd or POSTSchedulecmd
commands, typically due to the failure to assign an exit value such
that some random number ends up in the return code.

backup of MySQLDB

2008-02-13 Thread Avy Wong
Hello,
Is it still hold truth that there is no TSM special agent to backup
MySQL database. I searched on the Adsm archive, and the comments are
because it is opensource and there is no money in it, IBM do not support

Re: failed 12 error message

2008-01-07 Thread Avy Wong
I understand that neither Microsoft nor IBM will support Window NT related
problem. If you submit a PMR to IBM for support, they would tell you they
do not support it and close the ticket.

There are lots of not the same category errors showing up on your error
log. My guess is not one fix will fix it all. Take a look at each error and
start from there.

For example :
01/06/2008 20:05:20 ANS4987E Error processing '\\hmpg4001\c$\Documents and
Settings\perfmon\Local Settings\Application
Data\Microsoft\Windows\UsrClass.dat.LOG': the object is in use by another
process

You can do some exclusions - check with your window admin if you can first.

01/06/2008 10:24:43 isFileNameValid: Invalid file name global.asa - file
type not allowed.

Check with the server owner and ask what is this *.asa, do they need it
backed up ... if not exclude it

01/06/2008 20:03:23 ANS1327W The snapshot operation for 'C:' failed with
error code: 653.
01/06/2008 20:03:23 ANS1228E Sending of object '\\hmpg4001\c$' failed

My feeling this 'failed 12' error is yelling more of the snapshot error
here.
Go google ANS1327W & ANS1228E and see what other advises out there.

Just debug it one at a time Good luck.

The dsmerror/dsmsched.log files are the first place to go look what exactly
the Failed 12 error is. Sometimes it will say 'snapshot error', sometimes
is 'Microsoft Volume Shadow Copy error', etc., At times you can do ' q
actlog=-24 search=nodename' , to look deeper into where it hangs. (note:
actlog --> fill in how far back you want in hours) .

Does anyone know a link where one can bookmark it? Thanks.

We see these, as well. You need to check the dsmerror/dsmsched.log files

There is no direct way of finding a node's management class bindings, as
it is defined at the client's include-exclude list.
Also, A node's data can be bound to multiple management classes.

Re: scheduling

2007-11-20 Thread Avy Wong
Michael,
I thought the default is 1.

PERiod

Specifies the length of time between startup windows for this
schedule.
This parameter is optional. This parameter is used only with classic
schedules. You can specify an integer from 1 to 999. The default is 1.

Use this parameter with the PERUNITS parameter to specify the period
between startup windows. For example, if you specify PERIOD=5 and
PERUNITS=DAYS (assuming that DAYOFWEEK=ANY), the operation is
scheduled
every five days after the initial start date and start time. The
period
between startup windows must exceed the duration of each window. The
 default is 1 day.

This value is ignored if you specify PERUNITS=ONETIME.

I would make it DURATION=59 DURUNITS=MINUTES. That way if the previous
hourly backup ran longer, it would have an extra 59-minutes
before registered as a miss. Instead of only an extra 15-minutes.

Avy,

Something like the following is what you could do to change it to run
hourly. This assumes that it can complete in less than an
hour, otherwise sometimes you will get a "missed" backup for those times
that run longer than an hour.

Update schedule standard 2100_something duration=15 durunits=minutes
perunits=hours

Hello,

Is there anyway I can set it on the dsm.opt so that the order
of the backup starts with System Services, System State, ASR, c$ then
lastly d$. Currently it starts with d$, and c$, and often the d$ is so
large that at times it hangs and nothing else get backed up. Thank you for

The next time a host connects and is using that nodename, the TSM server
will automatically notice the change and update the IP, etc.

I know no way of updating it other than having the node connect for the
first time.

Hello Avy,

rc 106 means that your Error Log is not writable by the current
application...meaning that, if one already exists it was probably created
by root and the Application using the API is a non-root user, or the Error
Log is not created yet but your Application using the API does not have
write permission to the directory where you Error Log is trying to be
created.

We just purchased the Tivoli Storage Manager for Microsoft SharePoint. I
haven't installed it yet, so I can't tell you how well it works... Looks
like there are numerous features. A bit pricey too...

This TDP is a rebranding of "AvePoint DocAve"...

Subject: backups on Microsoft Sharepoint

Hello,
Currently we uses Microsoft Sharepoint as the tool to manage our
projects and we backup the client on tivoli. The files and database
structure of Microsoft sharepoint is complex enough that when it is time to
come to recover or restore files, it is not as simple as the regular
filespace or database restore. I am wondering if anyone has some insight as
to what's best way to back up Microsoft Sharepoint. Can tivoli backup
sufficient enough if not what is the best way or any suggestion as to what
other backup methods, tools are available. I appreciate your suggestions.

import node data

2007-09-24 Thread Avy Wong
hello,
I just want to make sure I am doing this right. Previously I have
exported node WXYZ data to a tape DR5144. Now a new box is built and ready
to bring the the data captured in DR5144 into this new box. I will need to
go to the client side of this new box and run the following command. Is
this correct?

Steps:
1) dsmc
2) IMport Node WXYZ domain=standard FILEData=ALL Preview=yes DEVclass=3584
volumenames=DR5144
3) If it looks good then I run the same command without Preview?

Thanks,

It looks like TSM is scanning the node. The server has sent 1.1G. I do
not remember seeing more than one session until the node starts sending
data.

for the single session?
Thanks.

journals are purged after a successfull incremental backup. So 'dsmc i'
should do it. On very active filesystems, one would expect a larger
journal.

create 2 sessions for backups

2007-08-31 Thread Avy Wong
Hello,
I have increased 'Maximum Mount Points Allowed: 2 ' on the Mail

restarted the TDP scheduler. When the backup schedule kicks off I am not
seeing the extra session shows up. What else I should check?

Include *.* TDPClass

Remove from scratch

2007-08-22 Thread Avy Wong
Hello,
I have 3 volumes that after all the investigations(I did all the
audits, restore, checkout libv) , I see that they have been physically
removed from the library. Currently their status are 'scratch' . Is there
a way to remove the information of 3 volumes from the 'scratch' pool?

thanks,

   backups on Linux

Hello,

  When I do ' df -h' , I see I have / /dev/boot/home. But I do not want
to back these up, rather I want to specify particular backups /var /
srv/etc.
Is there anyway to back these folder up if the partitions did not specify
them? Thanks.

IT01:/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin # df -h
FilesystemSize Used Avail Use% Mounted on
/dev/mapper/system-root
  6.9G 3.4G 3.3G 51% /
udev 253M 96K 252M 1% /dev
/dev/sda1 69M 14M 52M 22% /boot
/dev/mapper/system-home
  2.1G 86M 1.9G 5% /home
IT01:/opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin #

I have tried not to mention the domain in the dsm.sys, which takes the
default (Local -ALL) . Exclude all and include the ones I want but when I
go and run a backup, it still say incremental back up on /home .. then /dev
then boot. ?? What is the correct way to do this?

dsm.sys:

SErvername TSMServer
   nodename IT01
   COMMMethod TCPip
   TCPPort 1500
   TCPServeraddress 10.2.1.121
   passwordaccess generate
   schedlogname /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmsched.log
   errorlogname /opt/tivoli/tsm/client/ba/bin/dsmerror.log
   schedlogretention30
   errorlogretention30
   schedmodeprompted
   TCPCLIENTPort1501
   tcpwindowsize64
   tcpb 32
   txnbytelimit 25600
   tcpnodelay yes
