Restore question TSM for mail Lotus Domino Window V5.4

2007-09-05 Thread David Browne
Here's a breakdown of the problem I'm seeing.

Last week, 8/31, we generated enough data for 17 transaction log extent
files and were able to successfully execute data restores against those
files.

Tuesday, 9/4, I generated data for extent files 18 thru 44 and archived
those extent files, however, when I do a point in time restore against that
data, the Data Protection for Lotus Notes client only applies extent files
2 thru 17.

If I do a restore and select 'Apply Logs' on the Activate tab, the client
appears to apply transaction logs 2 thru 44 (all of the log files),
however, I still am only observing data recovery from the 31st. No data
from Tuesday appears to get restored during this operation.

So - the question is, how can I get the data from Tuesday restored by
applying transaction log extent files generated on that day?

TSM install on ESX Linux help?

I have very little Linux knowledge. So any suggestions will be appreciated.

but the BA module results in the following:

Restore Linux system from TSM

2007-06-13 Thread David Browne
I have a VMware virtual Linux server that had its DASD on an iSCSI device.
There was a failure of the iSCSI NAS device and the virtual image files
were lost. I have started over by creating a
very basic out-of-the-box Linux server (i.e. no service pack, no add-ons,
etc.)

I was just wondering if there are any white papers or other documents to
describe the best practices for doing
a restore of a Linux server via TSM?

Yep... Also the maxScr does play a role, you may have a diff in max scr
between used and allocated that still might be tooo small as a whole for
the amoutn of data you are trying to migrate. ie 100 Tapes @ 100 GB = 1TB
, but you are trying to mugrate 2 TB...

Archive question

My NetWare support guy has identified about 1 TB of data on one server

Is there an easy way to archive everything that has not been used for 1

Backup command line wildcard Characters?

2006-05-02 Thread David Browne
I have a large Windows client that I want to selectively backup the
directory structure and the files under the directories. For example:

C:\Firstfolder\01-Jan2005\Millions of files
C:\Firstfolder\02-Jan2005\Millions of files
C:\Firstfolder\03-Jan2005\Millions of files
C:\Firstfolder\04-Jan2005\Millions of files
C:\Firstfolder\01-Feb2005\Millions of files
C:\Firstfolder\02-Feb2005\Millions of files
C:\Firstfolder\03-Feb2005\Millions of files

I need to be able to backup just the January folders and files. From
looking at examples in the Windows client manual the following should
work:

 tsm sel C:\Firstfolder\0?-Jan2005\Millions of files

The above command will backup the first directory under Jan2005 and files
then stops.
Any suggestions?

Re: Backup command line wildcard Characters?

- You cannot use wildcards in the directory portion of the file
specification.
- You need to put quotes around the file spec since it contains blank
spaces.

Another alternative is to try something like this:

for /d %a in (c:\Firstfolder\??-Jan2005) do @dsmc s %a\Millions of
files\* -su=y

Additional note 1: Use -su=y (short for -subdir=yes) only if you need
to process subdirectories of the ..\Millions of files directories.

Additional note 2: Of course, if you embed the above into a batch file,
Windows batch file rules dictate that you need to use %%a instead of
%a.

Andy

Problems with Image restore for Windows 2003 server

2005-05-25 Thread David Browne
I have restored my C:, D: and E: fine, but F: is failing with ANS1165E
Destination is smaller than source
The server shows 48.03gb as the volume size and 48.02gb is what TSM shows

So, F: is larger not smaller .
Does anyone have any information on this issue?

Re: Problems with Image restore for Windows 2003 server

We could use more details, such as the restoral command (where
bringing back Inactive files can elevate requirements), and file
system types. But this may be the circumstance outlined in that
helpful client Readme file:

 - Restoring a NTFS filesystem to a FAT32-formatted volume of the
same size
may fail with the error ANS1165E Destination is smaller than
source.
It is recommended that the destination volume be raw (not
formatted) or
formatted with the same type of the filesystem as the original
one.
E.g. to restore a NTFS image the destination volume should not be
   FAT32-formatted.

The server shows 48.03gb as the volume size and 48.02gb is what
 TSM shows
 for the image backup.
So, F: is larger not smaller .
Does anyone have any information on this issue?
 Thanks!

CLEANUP BACKUPGROUPS before upgrading to TSM 5.2

2005-03-01 Thread David Browne
I am in the process of upgrading my TSM servers that run Version 5,
Release 1, Level 7.0 on ZOS Version 1 Release 4.

Do I need to upgrade my TSM 5.1 to a more current Level before I run the
CLEANUP BACKUPGROUPS process?

I'm using region=896m, you might want to check with your performance group
to see if you have enough storage to run this high.

The REGION is set to 512MB within the startup JCL. I didn't know what the
max. is for the region size, so I didn't change that. I will have to look
into increasing that as well. Thanks!

What's your REGION set to on the startup jcl? We're using 768M, but then
we appear to be a smaller implementation than you based on your database

Eliminating copy storage pool

2004-10-04 Thread David Browne
Our Storage Administrator asked if we could do away with our offsite copy
storage pool. They would duplex our current onsite backups on a VTS,
the backend 9840 tapes would be sent offsite, eliminating the need for
TSM's copy--storage-pool processing.

Has anyone done this before or have any thoughts on that?

Looking for ways to improve daily backups and Disaster Recovery

We're looking at possibly revamping our TSM system. We've got a OS/390

to our current server OR changing to a different TSM server platform
like AIX) what hardware configuration would give us the fastest D/R of
a large client?

Replacing our onsite tapepool that is used for migration?

2004-07-09 Thread David Browne
We will be removing our onsite tapepool that is used for migration of our
disk pool, replacing it with a large disk pool.

Below is the size of the current tapepool.

Storage Device Estimated Pct
Pct High Low Next Storage
Pool Name Class Name Capacity UtilMigr Mig

 (MB)
Pct Pct
- --
--- -- -
TAPEPOOLCARTRIDGE 7,563,426.252.2 58.190 70

I was considering just adding DASD to our current diskpool, discontinue the
migration process and letting the files expire through the normal backup
and file expiration process. After time, move the remaining stranded data
to the disk pool.

Is there a recommended procedure to do this task or can someone suggest a
better procedure?

Delete Offsite Copy Storage Pool

2004-06-02 Thread David Browne
I'm running TSM 5.1.7.0 server on ZOS.The clients are Novell, Windows
and AIX (around 400 total).

Backups are to mainframe DASD. The primary onsite tape pool is an STK VTS.
Backups are collocated by filespace, and we keep 3 versions of active
files.
Our copy storage pool is stored offsite, and filespaces are not collocated.

Our disaster administrator asked if we could do away with the offsite copy
storage pool. They would duplex the VTS's backend 9840 tapes and send
those offsite, eliminating the need for TSM's copy--storage-pool
processing.

Has anyone done this before or have any thoughts on that?

Window's XP machine locks up during backup due to Virus Scan?

2004-01-20 Thread David Browne
I have a user that has noticed that when his TSM backup starts his machine
locks up until the backup is complete due to Virus scan Access-scan, which

He has a Window's XP machine with VirusScan Enterprise 7.1. He has TSM

Does anyone know of an issue with TSM 5.1.6 and VirusScan?

Thanks!

Novell restore

2003-02-03 Thread David Browne
I have a Novell server that the file ownership rights/ attributes have
been lost, however the files are still in place.
Is there a way to just restore the files attribute without restoring the
file or the directories?

OS change, will it cause a full backup?

2003-01-31 Thread David Browne
Tonight we are doing a migration on a Novell server (node nameLOUDAT4) to
new OS and new hardware. The migration will be occurring as follows.
The current Novell server (LOUDAT4) is SCSI connected to an EMC symmetrix
and that is where its disk resides. It is NetWare 4.11.
The destination will be new server hardware running NetWare 5.1. This
server is fibre connected to the EMC symmetrix. It will be zoned so that
it can see the disk that is currently out there, and assume ownership of
it.

We will be removing NDS from the original server and getting it out of the
Tree.
We will then install NDS on the new hardware, and this server will assume
the same name and internal IPX addresses of the original server. The main
differences here is that it will be new hardware and a new OS (NetWare
5.1). We will have a new volume object ID in NDS, but I don't believe that
TSM reference this. Aside from that, the server name, volume name, and IPX
addresses will remain the same. We plan to bring over the option files
from the original box to the new box.

It currently has TSM 4.1.3.0 client code installed.

My question is, will TSM do a full backup after this type of harware change
or will he do a normal incremental?

Can a backup be stopped if not completed by a certain time?

2003-01-21 Thread David Browne
I run a pre and post command to stop and then restart applications on an NT
server in order to back it up.
The applications have to be brought up by a certain time in the morning.
Is there any way I can do a time check during the backups or set a time
for the applications be restarted even if the backup has not completed?

Is upgrade DB required?

2003-01-14 Thread David Browne
Is an upgrade DB required to go from TSM 4.2.1.9 on OS390/2.10 to TSM
4.2.3.0?

[no subject]

2003-01-13 Thread David Browne
We are running TSM 4.2.2.0 on OS390/2.10 and we are in the process of
replacing our mod 3 dasd with mod 9's.

Currently I have a disk storagepool with a mixture of mod 3 and mod 9 dasd
volumes, however when I define my dasd storage pool volumes I sized them
as mod 3.
I also have my database volumes broken in to mod 3 size volumes if they
reside on a mod 9.

My question is will I see a performance issue if I resize all of my storage
pool volumes and database volumes to a full mod 9 in size?

Exclude question

2002-09-18 Thread David Browne

I have specified an exclude in my dsm.opt file as it appears in the TSM 4.2

dsmerror.log:

GetBackupStreamSize(C:\pagefile.sys): uc_CreateFile(): Win32 RC = 32.
TransWin32RC(): Win32 RC 32 from GetBackupStreamSize(): uc_CreateFile

Am I doing something wrong or is there no way to eliminate this error
message?

We are getting an error ANE4025E (filename) file exceeds user or

1. Is this a TSM restriction or a Netware restriction?

Betreff: Re: Device_Mountlimit_VTS

I've seen TSM use more than the MOUNTLIMIT when high priority tasks need to
be performed. But I question you're use of a VTS for TSM? There was just a
long discussion on this a couple weeks back. Applications that use the
entire media (DISP=MOD) like TSM and DFSMShsm are not really good
candidates
for a VTS. Check out the archives to review the thread.
(http://www.adsm.org) When TSM wants to add on to an existing storage pool
volume, the existing data must be transferred back into cache in the VTS
before it can be appended. Then the 'new' volume has to be staged back to
real 3590 tape. The original location on real 3590 is now unavailable and
needs to be reclaimed. By doing this a lot, you are forcing the VTS to do a
lot of reclamation tasks. Plus the mount wait time to stage the data is
holding you up. Unles you write to a volume and mark it as read-only so TSM
won't try to append to it again.

Dear *SM Gurus

Our VTS has 64 logical drives, the mountlimit in this deviceclass is set to
38 in the TSM Server. Last Week i saw in the Mainvew Monitor an usage off
50
logical drives by TSM ! Is it possible to user more mountpoints, as they
are
defined by teh mountlimit?

Env: TSM Server 4.2.1.9 OS/390

Thanks in advance

Piping output to a file

2001-12-28 Thread David Browne.

I know there is a command to pipe information out to a file, but what I
need to be able to do is append information on.
For example can someone tell me how I could append a manual backups
information into my schedule log without overwriting the scheduled backup
information?

I am attempting to schedule a restore from one Novell server to another. I

My problem is after the restore completes the session is left open.
Is there a way to suppress the prompt, like the -noprompt option on the
delete command. Below is an example of what is displayed on the server
after the restore completes:

2001-11-29 Thread David Browne.

I have three TSM servers running TSM 4.1.4 on OS390/MVS 2.10. Currently
I write my onsite backups to dasd and then migrate the information to
tape (3490E 36 track) for my onsite backups.
My Storage Administer is wanting to move our onsite tape backups to a
VSM. Our VSM is an STK Virtual Tape Manager and we are running HSC 4.1.

We use SMS to control what datasets are selected to go to the VSM.
Currently my TSM tapes are 3490E and the VSM is configured to look like
a 3490 tape drive and 3490E tapes.

Can I just let SMS send the mounts to the VSM?

Has anyone done this?

Recovery log space spikes

2001-10-04 Thread David Browne.

The maximum size of the recovery log is 5.5GB, my recovery log is 4.5 GB
now and I have just recently increased it 1GB from 3.5GB. It filled up
again last night. My database is 59.5 GB. Could I have a problem that is
causing my recovery log to fill up or is this normal for this size of
database?
I am running TSM 3.7.4 on OS390 R 2.10.
I have been testing TSM 4.1.4 and am planning to go to the new release in
the next few weeks, could this help the situation?

Below shows the past three days monitoring.

TSM 3.7.2 problem on Novell 4.11

2001-07-11 Thread David Browne.

I have an intermittent problem with scheduled backups on my NetWare 4.11
severs running TSM 3.7.2. My scheduled backup session seems to complete
successful but the dsmc session does not quit. The next days scheduled
backup will not start. My Network people have attempted a ctrl C to get out
of the session and it does not break out. Then when they attempt to unload
dsmc it hangs the server and they have to reboot. This problem does not
happen on a regular basis and does not reoccur on the same server so it
makes getting a trace impossible. Anyone seen this before or have a
suggestion?

DATABASE backup question FULL or INCREMENTAL?

2001-04-09 Thread David Browne.

I am doing a nightly database full backup with ADSM/TSM. (TSM 3.7.4 on

What is most commonly done a Full or Incremental?
What are the advantages/disadvantages of a full over an incremental backup

The command we enter is as follows:
  backup db type=full devclass=dboffsite
Where dboffsite is the a tape device class.

Does anybody have a recommendation for how big you should let the database
get?
Does anyone have one on OS/390 that's much bigger?
Is there a limit on the size?
I'm concerned about the length of time it would take to recover.
 Are there other considerations?

showed the next scheduled event. Does anyone know if Tivoli plans to fix
this in the future or is it their intent that users can no longer see when
their schedules are going to run.

My question is; should I reply W to wait and then W to wait to the

  or

Should I respond R (retry) and have our automated operator product wait
five minutes before a second retry is issued to prevent looping?

What do you suggest for the response?
