Restore question TSM for mail Lotus Domino Window V5.4
Here's a breakdown of the problem I'm seeing. Last week, 8/31, we generated enough data for 17 transaction log extent files and were able to successfully execute data restores against those files. Tuesday, 9/4, I generated data for extent files 18 thru 44 and archived those extent files, however, when I do a point in time restore against that data, the Data Protection for Lotus Notes client only applies extent files 2 thru 17. If I do a restore and select 'Apply Logs' on the Activate tab, the client appears to apply transaction logs 2 thru 44 (all of the log files), however, I still am only observing data recovery from the 31st. No data from Tuesday appears to get restored during this operation. So - the question is, how can I get the data from Tuesday restored by applying transaction log extent files generated on that day? Restore Linux system from TSM
I have a VMware virtual Linux server that had its DASD on an iSCSI device. There was a failure of the iSCSI NAS device and the virtual image files were lost. I have started over by creating a very basic out-of-the-box Linux server (i.e. no service pack, no add-ons, etc.) I was just wondering if there are any white papers or other documents to describe the best practices for doing a restore of a Linux server via TSM? Backup command line wildcard Characters?

From looking at examples in the Windows client manual the following should work: tsm sel C:\Firstfolder\0?-Jan2005\Millions of files The above command will backup the first directory under Jan2005 and files then stops. Eliminating copy storage pool
Our Storage Administrator asked if we could do away with our offsite copy storage pool. They would duplex our current onsite backups on a VTS, the backend 9840 tapes would be sent offsite, eliminating the need for TSM's copy--storage-pool processing. Has anyone done this before or have any thoughts on that? The information transmitted is intended only for the person or entity to which it is addressed and may contain CONFIDENTIAL material. Looking for ways to improve daily backups and Disaster Recovery
We're looking at possibly revamping our TSM system. We've got a OS/390 server. Looking at all possibilities (adding disk or tape or bandwidth to our current server OR changing to a different TSM server platform like AIX) what hardware configuration would give us the fastest D/R of a large client? Delete Offsite Copy Storage Pool
I'm running TSM 5.1.7.0 server on ZOS.The clients are Novell, Windows and AIX (around 400 total). Backups are to mainframe DASD. The primary onsite tape pool is an STK VTS. Backups are collocated by filespace, and we keep 3 versions of active files. Our copy storage pool is stored offsite, and filespaces are not collocated. Our disaster administrator asked if we could do away with the offsite copy storage pool. They would duplex the VTS's backend 9840 tapes and send those offsite, eliminating the need for TSM's copy--storage-pool processing. Window's XP machine locks up during backup due to Virus Scan?
I have a user that has noticed that when his TSM backup starts his machine locks up until the backup is complete due to Virus scan Access-scan, which apparently goes whenever files are accessed. Novell restore

OS change, will it cause a full backup?
Tonight we are doing a migration on a Novell server (node nameLOUDAT4) to new OS and new hardware. The migration will be occurring as follows. The current Novell server (LOUDAT4) is SCSI connected to an EMC symmetrix and that is where its disk resides. It is NetWare 4.11. The destination will be new server hardware running NetWare 5.1. This server is fibre connected to the EMC symmetrix. It will be zoned so that it can see the disk that is currently out there, and assume ownership of it. We will be removing NDS from the original server and getting it out of the Tree. We will then install NDS on the new hardware, and this server will assume the same name and internal IPX addresses of the original server. The main differences here is that it will be new hardware and a new OS (NetWare 5.1). We will have a new volume object ID in NDS, but I don't believe that TSM reference this. Aside from that, the server name, volume name, and IPX addresses will remain the same. We plan to bring over the option files from the original box to the new box. It currently has TSM 4.1.3.0 client code installed. My question is, will TSM do a full backup after this type of harware change or will he do a normal incremental?
Can a backup be stopped if not completed by a certain time?
I run a pre and post command to stop and then restart applications on an NT server in order to back it up. The applications have to be brought up by a certain time in the morning. Is there any way I can do a time check during the backups or set a time for the applications be restarted even if the backup has not completed?

[no subject]
We are running TSM 4.2.2.0 on OS390/2.10 and we are in the process of replacing our mod 3 dasd with mod 9's. Currently I have a disk storagepool with a mixture of mod 3 and mod 9 dasd volumes, however when I define my dasd storage pool volumes I sized them as mod 3. I also have my database volumes broken in to mod 3 size volumes if they reside on a mod 9. My question is will I see a performance issue if I resize all of my storage pool volumes and database volumes to a full mod 9 in size?
Exclude question
I have specified an exclude in my dsm.opt file as it appears in the TSM 4.2 manual Excluding System Files and I still receive the following error in my dsmerror.log: GetBackupStreamSize(C:\pagefile.sys): uc_CreateFile(): Win32 RC = 32. TransWin32RC(): Win32 RC 32 from GetBackupStreamSize(): uc_CreateFile Am I doing something wrong or is there no way to eliminate this error message?

April 2002 15:52 An: [EMAIL PROTECTED] Betreff: Re: Device_Mountlimit_VTS I've seen TSM use more than the MOUNTLIMIT when high priority tasks need to be performed. But I question you're use of a VTS for TSM? There was just a long discussion on this a couple weeks back. Applications that use the entire media (DISP=MOD) like TSM and DFSMShsm are not really good candidates for a VTS. Check out the archives to review the thread. (http://www.adsm.org) When TSM wants to add on to an existing storage pool volume, the existing data must be transferred back into cache in the VTS before it can be appended. Then the 'new' volume has to be staged back to real 3590 tape. The original location on real 3590 is now unavailable and needs to be reclaimed. By doing this a lot, you are forcing the VTS to do a lot of reclamation tasks. Plus the mount wait time to stage the data is holding you up. Unles you write to a volume and mark it as read-only so TSM won't try to append to it again. I have three TSM servers running TSM 4.1.4 on OS390/MVS 2.10. Currently I write my onsite backups to dasd and then migrate the information to tape (3490E 36 track) for my onsite backups. My Storage Administer is wanting to move our onsite tape backups to a VSM. Our VSM is an STK Virtual Tape Manager and we are running HSC 4.1. Question on TSM 4.1.3.0 for MVS and OS390
I currently have TSM 3.7.4.0 for MVS installed on OS390/2.10. I am backing up several different platforms on the client server, Novell 4.11, Novell 5.10, a couple different Versions of NT, also the following desktop clients, NT, Windows 95, 98 2000. I have several different Versions of the ADSM/TSM client code installed on the servers and workstations. Does anyone know of any glitches or problems I should be aware of with the TSM 4.1.3.0 for OS/390 code.
Recovering ADSM/TSM for a Disaster recovery test
I have three TSM 3.7.4 servers running on OS390 2.10 in a Parallel Sysplex environment. Has anyone attempted (or does anyone know if it would work) to recover ADSM or TSM on an OS390 mainframe using FDR (Innovation's Fast Dump Restore) or IBM's DFDSS products? In other words do full volume backups on the OS390 then do full volume restores to recover the Database, Recovery logs, etc.
TSM 3.7.2 problem on Novell 4.11
I have an intermittent problem with scheduled backups on my NetWare 4.11 severs running TSM 3.7.2. My scheduled backup session seems to complete successful but the dsmc session does not quit. The next days scheduled backup will not start. My Network people have attempted a ctrl C to get out of the session and it does not break out. Then when they attempt to unload dsmc it hangs the server and they have to reboot. This problem does not happen on a regular basis and does not reoccur on the same server so it makes getting a trace impossible. Anyone seen this before or have a suggestion?

TSM password expiring on AIX client
Additional information. This AIX client is registered to an OS390/2.8 server and has TSM 3.7.4 installed. I submit a batch job monthly to reset the passwords. I have Novell and NT clients also registered to the same OS390 server. I do not have the same password problems with the other clients. - Forwarded by David Browne/Louisville/Humana on 04/11/2001 01:52 PM - David Browne To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] 04/11/2001 cc: 01:16 PM Subject: TSM password expiring on AIX client I have TSM 3.7.2 client code installed on AIX 4.3. DATABASE backup question FULL or INCREMENTAL?
I am doing a nightly database full backup with ADSM/TSM. (TSM 3.7.4 on OS390/2.10) What is most commonly done a Full or Incremental? What are the advantages/disadvantages of a full over an incremental backup of the servers database? The command we enter is as follows: backup db type=full devclass=dboffsite Where dboffsite is the a tape device class.
ADSM concern on Database size.
One of our ADSM databases runs on OS/390 2.10 and is 44GB. Does anybody have a recommendation for how big you should let the database get? Does anyone have one on OS/390 that's much bigger? Is there a limit on the size? I'm concerned about the length of time it would take to recover. Are there other considerations?

Questions on scheduler TSM4.1.1 Windows Client
I installed TSM 4.1.1 on my Windows 95 client. After I installed the code and configured the scheduler with the Configuration Wizard, I received a "Finish" window that really means nothing to my user community. Under previous releases I received a TSM Sched window and when clicked on it showed the next scheduled event. Does anyone know if Tivoli plans to fix this in the future or is it their intent that users can no longer see when their schedules are going to run.
Scheduler for TSM 4.1.1
I just installed TSM 4.1.1 on my Windows 95 Client. After the install I noticed that the Scheduler was not installed. Did I do something wrong or is there a bug in the install?
dsmcsvc.exe - Application Error
I have a client running TSM 3.7.1 on Windows 2000. During the backups he gets the following window to pop up. (Embedded image moved to file: pic31398.pcx) This has been an intermittent problem, however this last time he received the error two days in a row. Has anyone else had this error and what was the cause and the resolution? pic31398.pcx
Tape drive shortage
I am running TSM 3.7.20.0 on MVS OS390 2.8 mainframe. We are short on tape drives and we are receiving the following message: ANR5373I Unable to allocate tape drive with device type TAPE36 for tape 276414. Reply C (cancel), R (retry), or W (wait). My question is; should I reply W to wait and then W to wait to the IEF238D message that will be issued from MVS allocation recovery or Should I respond R (retry) and have our automated operator product wait five minutes before a second retry is issued to prevent looping? What do you suggest for the response?
Error when backing up
I am running TSM 3.7.2 client code and NetWare 5.0. I am able to do a scheduled backup and I can do a restore. When I attempt to do a manual incremental or a manual selective backup I receive the below error messages. I am able to ping and TSA NLM is loaded. Has anyone else had this problem and what did you do to fix it? MAKE SURE THE TSA NLM IS LOADED ON THE SPECIFIED MACHINE. (SMDR-5.0-66) AN INTERNAL ERROR HAS OCCURRED.
