Re: backup nasnode questions

2007-10-15 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi Markus,

thanks for your reply.

- the full backup will be kept until the next one is performed, but it will
no longer be reported on with the query, so don´t worry if it doesn´t seem
to show up... you can´t prove it is still there apart from performing a
restore: hard to believe, I admit, but it just works that way

So knock on wood if you need a restore and the full backup is still
there ;-)

- the summary table reports processes on volumes but utterly fails to
report on virtual filespacemappings regarding these processes, making it
useless for reporting and analysis

I don't use vfsmappings at the moment.

Finding the right frequency regarding full/differential is a pain, we have
come up with a 4-week rotation using virtual filespace-mappings which works
quite well as only approximately a quarter of the data goes through a full
per weekend.
So we end up with one admin schedule and script for Monday through
Wednesday doing differentials plus four for the four fridays doing partial
fulls.

I wrote a single script that I call with different values for the input
variables, like the following example:

backup node netapp /vol/vol0 mode=$1 mgmt=netapp
backup node netapp /vol/vol1 mode=$2 mgmt=netapp
backup node netapp /vol/vol2 mode=$3 mgmt=netapp
backup node netapp /vol/vol3 mode=$4 mgmt=netapp

On weekdays I call the script with the arguments diff diff diff diff,
on every second Saturday with full diff diff diff or diff full diff
diff and on every second Sunday with diff diff full diff or diff
diff diff full. So I have full backups every two weeks for each volume.

It works, but I think, TSM should come up with a better solution.

backup nasnode questions

2007-10-04 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

I just configured our TSM server (5.4.1.2 on AIX) to backup our two
NetApp filers. I have a few question regarding the NDMP backups:

- How do I have to define the backup copygroup? I want to keep the full
backup and two differentials. Is it correct to set the option
verexists=2? After the third backup I only see the two differentials
with the command q nasbackup. The full backup disappeared because it
seems to have been expired.
- How long will the full backup be kept?
- Is it possible to get some information about the last full backup
after it has been expired?
- Is it possible to automatically create full backups after a given time
(2 weeks for example)? It's not a good idea to create full backups of
the whole filers on the same day, so I want to define a different time
for each filesystem. Is it possible without defining separate schedules
for each filesystem? It would be nice to have an option for a filesystem
that says create a full backup every 14 days.

- I don't see accounting information about the nas backups in the
dsmaccnt.log file. Is it possible to find out how much data has been
backed up from the nas nodes?

Sorry for so many questions but the TSM manuals are a bit rare on this
topic.

Re: backup nasnode questions

2007-10-04 Thread Dirk Kastens

Larry,

thanks for your reply, but:

Per the TSM 5.4 Admin reference: If you backup up at an attached library
you
need to create a copypool with the same NDMP data format...in your case
NETAPPDUMP. In other situations, the format needs to be NATIVE.

I backup directly to the TSM server. There is no library or drive
attached to the filers.

verexists refers to active copies. What is your retain extra set for? The
full may still exist as an inactive file. If you want a full and two
incrementals active you'll have to change your verexists value. Do a query
with inact=yes to see if the full is still available for restore.

The q nasbackup command doesn't have an inactive option. When I set
the verexists=2 option, after the first backup, the full image is the
active version. After the second backup, the full image changes to
inactive and the differential is the active version. After the third
backup, the first differential changes to inactive and the second
differential is active. The full backup has disappeared from the list,
although it must be there because the differential depends on the full
backup. I don't see a command that can list the expired full backup.
On the other hand, I don't want to keep 14 differential backups until I
make the next full backup. I just want to keep (and see) the full backup
and the last two differentials.

Scheduling full backups every two weeks: Use a separate schedule for full
backups with a perunits=weeks period=2

Yes, but I don't want to backup the whole filer once every two weeks. I
want to backup vol1 on Monday, vol2 on Tuesday, and so on, what means,
that I had to define a single schedule for each filesystem. My idea was
to set an options on a filespace that automatically arranges a full
backup after a defined number of days. So I only need one schedule with
the backup node command, TSM looks up the date of the last full backup
of each filesystem and handles the next full backup dependent on the
defined option.

We're just testing a deduplication disk array from DataDomain with TSM.
The compression ratio is much less than promised by the sales people.
During the last 10 days of incremental backups we only achieved a ratio
of 2.6:1. The disk array is very expensive and for the money you can buy
more disks than you need without compression.

You can use the virtualmountpoint option on unix clients.
Place the following option in dsm.sys:

I think, there's a big security issue. I just granted proxy authority to
one of our NFS clients. The backups are made on TSM node nfsserver and
the node nfsclient acts as a proxynode. So I added the following lines
to the dsm.sys on the client node:

nodename nfsclient

But now, when I log on to the NFS client as a normal user, I am able to
restore arbitrary files of other users to my home directory The
other homedirectories are not readable for me, so an ls /home/myboss
doesn't work. But using dsmc I get access to all files of all other users.
With dsmc q ba -subd=y /home/myboss/ I get a list of all files of my
boss. And with dsmc restore I can restore all of his files to my home
directory. IS THIS A BUG OR DOES IT WORK AS DESIGNED?

I installed 5.3.3.0 clients on Linux.

One point is missing: you should first update the old server to TSM
5.1.10 and run a cleanup backupgroups before you go to version 5.2.x.
Theres a good PowerPoint presentation:
http://www-1.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21214007aid=1
Then you could a) upgrade the old server to 5.2.7 and do the migration,
or b) install TSM 5.1.10 on the new server, do the migration and upgrade
to 5.2.7. That's what I did (I went to 5.3.2). Our new server is much
faster than the old one. So I thought it was a better idea to let the
new server do the software upgrade.

1) Do I really need to delete and redefine the drives, libray, paths etc?

I didn't have to delete the drives etc. For restoring the db on the new
server you only need the library and one drive defined in your new TSM
server. After restoration (or before) you can define the other drives.

2) Do I really need to run the 'checkin libv' commands.

No. You also do not need to copy the dsmserv.dsk to the new server. This
could be confusing if you have different db and log volumes defined on
the new server. You will need the volume history file so that the
dsmserv restore db command will know what tapes to use. You can check
it with dsmserv restore db todate=today preview=yes

Linux GUI and client user id

2006-03-15 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

when I register a new node on the TSM server (AIX v5.3.2.3), I do not
assign owner authority to an admin. There wasn't any problem with that,
until I started the java gui on a linux client (v5.3.2.0). The gui
presents a login window with a field for the user id (which is the same
as the nodename) and for the password. When I enter the password, I
always get the error message ANS1370E The user ID entered does not have
the correct level of authority to access the client machine. No work
can be done with the client gui. When I create an admin on the server
and assign authority for the client node to it, the client gui works.
The command line client works without defining an admin.
Is there a fix for that behavior?

I think, the section Configuring Tivoli Storage Manager client/server

consequences of using dsmcad. I was confused by the statement Method 2:
For the client scheduler in prompted mode, it is unnecessary to open any
ports on the firewall. I was using prompted mode for years with the
dsmc sched running on the client nodes. It doesn't come to my mind
that I now have to use the WEBPORTS option, because I thought this was
related to the web client, that I don't want to use.
The ADSM Quick Facts comes to the point: The WEBports option controls
the scheduler side's port number (oddly enough).
I'm missing a statement like: If you use dsmcad to start the client
scheduler, you have to define the webports option on the client.

Hi,

TSM 5.3.2.3 server

I start the dsmcad process with the rc.d script from the technote. The
problem is that the schedule only works once. After the backup is
finished the client scheduler stops but never gets called again,
although the dsmcad process is still running. During the next backup
period the tsm server says that the session with the client timed out.

The last entry in the dsmsched.log is:

The last entry in the dsmwebcl.log is:
03/07/2006 00:52:32 (dsmcad) Waiting to be contacted by the server.

But nothing happens. When I restart the dsmcad during the backup period,
the backup immediately starts:

03/07/2006 22:52:53 (dsmcad) Dsmcad is working inSchedule mode.
03/07/2006 22:52:53 (dsmcad) Command will be executed
in 1 minute.

and can manage dozens of client sessions while doing expiration and
reclamation at the same time.

That's interesting. I just made some tests on our new server. At first I
defined three big dbvolumes (using raw logical volumes), each on a
separate hdisk (AIX 5.3), and each being mirrored by TSM on another
hdisk. When TSM started up, or when I did an auditdb, only one of the
primary volumes was active at a time, with a read throughput of about
1000 kB/s (measured with topas). Then I defined striped logical volumes
using three hdisks. During startup or an auditdb all three disks were
active at a time, but the read throughput of each disk was degraded to
250 kB/s, what makes 750 kB/s for the whole volume.
That means that the throughput was higher with separated volumes. Or did
I make a mistake?

(fairly) even byte occupancy per volume.

How do you get the occupancy of a database volume? With Q DBVOL I only
see the available space (size of the formatted volume) and the allocated
space (what is assigned to the database). In my case both are the same
for all volumes.
If you were right, I would get a problem on my new server, because I
formatted three big volumes, each on a separate disk. If TSM only uses
the first volume until it is full, then I would not benefit from the
separate disk drives to get a higher performance.

We've done it last year. If you use the same drives so that you can

If I remember correctly, that was all we have done. No data were lost.

disk layout for db and log

hdisk2: db1 (65 GB) + log1 (4 GB)
hdisk3: db2 (65 GB) + log2 (4 GB)
hdisk4: db3 (65 GB) + log3 (4 GB)
Or should the recovery log be located on a separate disk (what will be a
waste of space)? Shall we create on big db volume on every disk or
several small volumes? Maybe
hdisk2: db1 + db2 + db3 (20 GB) + log1 (10 GB)
hdisk3: db4 + db5 + db6 (20 GB)
hdisk4: db7 + db8 + db9 (20 GB)

Jim,

Are you going to mirror at the hardware, OS, or application level?

I'm going to mirror at the application (TSM) level.

Spread the logical volumes across multiple disks at least two. The
database, logs, and storage pool volume need to run on their own disks.

The stgpool volumes are located in our SAN. If the database and log
volumes go on separate disks, I would only have two disks for the db and
one for the small recovery log (which are mirrored to the other three
disks).
I think it could be possible to have on disk with db AND log volumes on
it and the other two disks with only db volumes. Or will this layout
degrade performance too much?

At the moment our database is 48 GB in size and is 65% utilized. What,

start with 3 or 4 rlv of size 20 GB, each on a separate disk and let

My other question was about allocationg db and log volumes on the same

hdisk2: db1 (20GB) + log1 (4GB) - mirror on hdisk5
hdisk3: db2 (20GB) + log2 (4GB) - mirror on hdisk6
hdisk4: db3 (20GB) + log3 (4GB) - mirror on hdisk7

We use the AIX error notification object class to get informed

Create a file called en.add (for example) with the following
content:

errnotify:
en_name = tapemail
en_persistenceflg = 1
en_class = H
en_type = PERM
en_rclass = tape
en_method = errpt -a -l $1 | /bin/mail -s 'TSM Tape Error'
[EMAIL PROTECTED]

Then add this object to your ODM database with:

# odmadd en.add

Control the success with the command:

# odmget -qen_name=tapemail errnotify

You can change the error class and type to cover your needs. The above
example sends a mail to [EMAIL PROTECTED] whenever a
permanent hardware tape error occurs.

Library upgrade question

2004-10-13 Thread Dirk Kastens
Hi,

we are going to exchange our Adic Scalar 100 for
a Scalar 1000, soon.
Would it be possible to simply move the DLT tapes
from the old library to the new one, if we keep
the names of the library and the drives in TSM
(doing an audit library afterwards)?
Or do we have to connect both libraries to migrate
the data to the new one (what will take some time
for 5 TB)?
What's the best way to keep the old data?

Thanks in advance,

Re: Converting I/O station into regular slots

2003-02-25 Thread Dirk Kastens
Camilo,

I have a question, I am running out of physical space on my
3583 library, and I was wondering if there is a way of making
the 12 slots on the I/O station (Bulk), part of the regular
 tape slots.

Yes, I've done this with our 3583. I can't tell you from the
top of my head what exactly I did, but you have to configure
the library using the front panel.

Re: Stability of TSM

2003-01-09 Thread Dirk Kastens
Hi,

thank you all for taking time to answer my question. I was
leaning towards 4.2.x as well, there seems to be too many
 issues with 5.x. -kane

We are running 5.1 on AIX 5.1 for more than half a year now
without any problems. We recently upgraded to 5.1.5.4.

Re: Deleted filespace

2002-08-02 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

Is there any way to recover a deleted filespace ?

I have set my tape pool to reclaim=100 to prevent reclamation.

Seems that you have to restore your database to a time
before the deletion. When the information about the
filespace is removed from the database, you won't
be able to recover the files.

Re: Windows XP - User Backup Restore

2002-07-29 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

In the laboratory, I have been able to install the
central scheduling service and can backup/restore all
files as an administrator. When I'm logged in as a
power user, it's a different story - I am only able to
backup/restore such System Objects as thr Registry,
COM+ DB, Event Log, Registry, System Files and WMI.

Same on our W2k workstations. Users can only backup
their files after creating shares for the local
drives, like drive_c$. Then these shares appear in
the client GUI and can be backed up. The solution
with the registry keys didn't work for us.

Re: Slow restore of entire server volume

2002-07-16 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

We lost a server volume over the weekend - Netware 5.1 server
 - 20 GB or so
 to restore from tape. The process is going extremely slowly;
 it seems that
most of the time is being spent retrieving tapes, and we have
 only 3.5 GB
restored so far (started late yesterday afternoon).

Do you have a separate management class for directories (see
the option DIRMC)? During a restore, TSM first recovers the
directory structure and then the files. If you don't have
a directory mangement class, TSM has to search through your
tapes twice.

Re: Incremental failure - NFS?

2002-07-15 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

 3) Mount file system soft or hard soft
NEVER mount an NFS filesystem 'hard'... if the NFS client EVER
looses contact with the NFS server, it will hang and it WILL take a
 reboot to recover.
By mounting 'soft', if the NFS clinet looses contact
 with the NFS
server, the mount can be dealt with, ie. unmounted, with a
 little work.

That's not a good advice, IMO. Only use the soft mount, if the
filesystem is mounted read-only. Otherwise this could lead to
data corruption. For read-write mounted filesystems, use the
intr option.
Here's an excerpt of the AIX Performance Management Guide:

One of the choices you make when configuring NFS-mounted directories
is whether the mounts will be hard (-o hard) or soft (-o soft). When,
after a successful mount, an access to a soft-mounted directory
encounters an error (typically, a timeout), the error is immediately
reported to the program that requested the remote access. When an
access to a hard-mounted directory encounters an error, NFS retries
the operation.

A persistent error accessing a hard-mounted directory can escalate
into a perceived performance problem because the default number of
retries (1000) and the default timeout value (0.7 second), combined
with an algorithm that increases the timeout value for successive
retries, mean that NFS continues to try to complete the operation.

It is technically possible to reduce the number of retries, or
increase the timeout value, or both, using options of the mount
command. Unfortunately, changing these values sufficiently to
remove the perceived performance problem might lead to unnecessary
reported hard errors. Instead, use the intr option to mount the
hard-mounted directories, which allows the user to interrupt from
the keyboard a process that is in a retry loop.

Although soft-mounting the directories causes the error to be
detected sooner, it runs a serious risk of data corruption.
In general, read/write directories should be hard-mounted.

Re: restore asking for offsite copy instead of primary

2002-07-11 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

I had a user trying to restore a database and found data
 unavailable to
server. The restore was asking for a volume that was offsite.
 Why wouldn't
it ask for the primary copy and how do I know what primary
 volume the data
 is on?

You can use an SQL statement, like

select distinct volume_name,stgpool_name from volumeusage -
where node_name='YOUR_CLIENT_NODE_NAME' -
order by volume_name

Maybe the volume has been disabled or changed to readonly due
to a write or read error.

 node_name is not recognized.

ANR2940E The reference 'NODE' is an unknown SQL column name.

 .V.
_name from volumeusage where node-name=ABC order by
 volume_name

Seems, that you typed node-name instead of node_name.

Re: optimising tcpwindowsize and tcpbuffsizes

2002-07-11 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

here is an excerpt of the knowledge base article
Description of Windows 2000 TCP Features (Q224829).
As I understand, the maximum value IS 64 UNLESS the
RFC1323 option is used. I'm not a network expert, but
why should I set the TCPWINDOWSIZE option to 63?

The receive window size is determined in the following manner:
1. The first connection request sent to a remote host advertises
a receive window size of 16K (16,384 bytes).
2. When the connection is established, the receive window size is
rounded up to an even increment of the MSS.
3. The window size is adjusted to 4 times the MSS, to a maximum
size of 64K, unless the window scaling option (RFC 1323) is used.

2002-07-10 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

I'm came across an issue yesteday, does anyone know a way around
deleting a large number of files without getting the 'parameter too
 long'
message. i.e. I was trying to delete all the file that began with
 program*.

What about

find ./ -xdev -type f -name program* -exec rm {} \;

or

for file in `echo program*`; do rm $file; done

Re: optimising tcpwindowsize and tcpbuffsizes

2002-07-10 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

TCPWINDOWSIZE should be set to 63 on Win2k.

No, that's the recommendation for WinNT4. The maximum
value for Win2k is 64 (see the MS knowledge base article
Q224829).
After we set the values for TCPWINDOWSIZE to 64 and the
TCPBUFFSIZE to 512 the throughput of our Win2k clients
has been increased dramatically from 200 kB/s to 4-5 MB/s.

2002-06-27 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

I just upgraded our server to 5.1. I'm still missing
quotas for client backup and archive space.
And I'm still looking for a possibility to allow
clients to restore their data but not to do backups.
We backup our /home filesystem at night, but we want
to allow our users to restore the files in their
homedirectories themselves without doing backups or
creating archives. Networker always had different client
programs for backup and restore.

Re: include/exclude question

2002-06-25 Thread Dirk Kastens

Hi,

 exclude.dir a:\
 exclude.dir b:\
 exclude.dir c:\
 exclude.dir d:\
 exclude.dir f:\
 include c:\abc\abc.txt mgtname

 with above nothing works .

Just read the Windows client manual, page 16, Excluding
directories:

TSM evaluates all exclude.dir statements first (regardless
od their position within the include-exclude list)...
The exclude.dir statement overrides all include statements
that match the pattern.

So you have to explicitly exclude all the directories of
drive c: except the one that you want to backup.

Dirk

Re: include/exclude question

2002-06-25 Thread Dirk Kastens

That will be a diffícult solution... just use:

 exclude c:\...\*
 include c:\abc\abc.txt mgtname

 that will work

Yes, but this only excludes the files. The complete
directory structure of drive c: will be backed up.

Dirk
