Re: backup nasnode questions
Hi Markus, thanks for your reply. - the full backup will be kept until the next one is performed, but it will no longer be reported on with the query, so don´t worry if it doesn´t seem to show up... you can´t prove it is still there apart from performing a restore: hard to believe, I admit, but it just works that way So knock on wood if you need a restore and the full backup is still there ;-) - the summary table reports processes on volumes but utterly fails to report on virtual filespacemappings regarding these processes, making it useless for reporting and analysis I don't use vfsmappings at the moment. Finding the right frequency regarding full/differential is a pain, we have come up with a 4-week rotation using virtual filespace-mappings which works quite well as only approximately a quarter of the data goes through a full per weekend. So we end up with one admin schedule and script for Monday through Wednesday doing differentials plus four for the four fridays doing partial fulls. I wrote a single script that I call with different values for the input variables, like the following example: backup node netapp /vol/vol0 mode=$1 mgmt=netapp backup node netapp /vol/vol1 mode=$2 mgmt=netapp backup node netapp /vol/vol2 mode=$3 mgmt=netapp backup node netapp /vol/vol3 mode=$4 mgmt=netapp On weekdays I call the script with the arguments diff diff diff diff, on every second Saturday with full diff diff diff or diff full diff diff and on every second Sunday with diff diff full diff or diff diff diff full. So I have full backups every two weeks for each volume. It works, but I think, TSM should come up with a better solution. -- Regards, Dirk Kastens Universitaet Osnabrueck, Rechenzentrum (Computer Center) Albrechtstr. 28, 49069 Osnabrueck, Germany Tel.: +49-541-969-2347, FAX: -2470

backup nasnode questions
Hi, I just configured our TSM server (5.4.1.2 on AIX) to backup our two NetApp filers. I have a few question regarding the NDMP backups: - How do I have to define the backup copygroup? I want to keep the full backup and two differentials. Is it correct to set the option verexists=2? After the third backup I only see the two differentials with the command q nasbackup. The full backup disappeared because it seems to have been expired. - How long will the full backup be kept? - Is it possible to get some information about the last full backup after it has been expired? - Is it possible to automatically create full backups after a given time (2 weeks for example)? It's not a good idea to create full backups of the whole filers on the same day, so I want to define a different time for each filesystem. Is it possible without defining separate schedules for each filesystem? It would be nice to have an option for a filesystem that says create a full backup every 14 days. - I don't see accounting information about the nas backups in the dsmaccnt.log file. Is it possible to find out how much data has been backed up from the nas nodes? Sorry for so many questions but the TSM manuals are a bit rare on this topic. -- Viele Gruesse, Dirk Kastens Universitaet Osnabrueck, Rechenzentrum (Computer Center) Albrechtstr. 28, 49069 Osnabrueck, Germany Tel.: +49-541-969-2347, FAX: -2470
Re: backup nasnode questions
Larry, thanks for your reply, but: Per the TSM 5.4 Admin reference: If you backup up at an attached library you need to create a copypool with the same NDMP data format...in your case NETAPPDUMP. In other situations, the format needs to be NATIVE. I backup directly to the TSM server. There is no library or drive attached to the filers. verexists refers to active copies. What is your retain extra set for? The full may still exist as an inactive file. If you want a full and two incrementals active you'll have to change your verexists value. Do a query with inact=yes to see if the full is still available for restore. The q nasbackup command doesn't have an inactive option. When I set the verexists=2 option, after the first backup, the full image is the active version. After the second backup, the full image changes to inactive and the differential is the active version. After the third backup, the first differential changes to inactive and the second differential is active. The full backup has disappeared from the list, although it must be there because the differential depends on the full backup. I don't see a command that can list the expired full backup. On the other hand, I don't want to keep 14 differential backups until I make the next full backup. I just want to keep (and see) the full backup and the last two differentials. Scheduling full backups every two weeks: Use a separate schedule for full backups with a perunits=weeks period=2 Yes, but I don't want to backup the whole filer once every two weeks. I want to backup vol1 on Monday, vol2 on Tuesday, and so on, what means, that I had to define a single schedule for each filesystem. My idea was to set an options on a filespace that automatically arranges a full backup after a defined number of days. So I only need one schedule with the backup node command, TSM looks up the date of the last full backup of each filesystem and handles the next full backup dependent on the defined option. -- Regards, Dirk Kastens Universitaet Osnabrueck, Rechenzentrum (Computer Center) Albrechtstr. 28, 49069 Osnabrueck, Germany Tel.: +49-541-969-2347, FAX: -2470

Hi, Writing a de-dupe backup product isn't easy. EMC bought Avamar and Symantec bought Data Center Technologies to get their respective products. I don't know of any other de-dupe companies for IBM to acquire, so they'll have to write their own. That may take them a bit longer. We're just testing a deduplication disk array from DataDomain with TSM. The compression ratio is much less than promised by the sales people. During the last 10 days of incremental backups we only achieved a ratio of 2.6:1. The disk array is very expensive and for the money you can buy more disks than you need without compression. -- Regards, Dirk Kastens Universitaet Osnabrueck, Rechenzentrum (Computer Center) Albrechtstr. 28, 49069 Osnabrueck, Germany Tel.: +49-541-969-2347, FAX: -2470

I don't have experience with this, but it would be interesting to hear from any sites which have pursued it. I think, there's a big security issue. I just granted proxy authority to one of our NFS clients. The backups are made on TSM node nfsserver and the node nfsclient acts as a proxynode. So I added the following lines to the dsm.sys on the client node: nodename nfsclient asnodename nfsserver But now, when I log on to the NFS client as a normal user, I am able to restore arbitrary files of other users to my home directory The other homedirectories are not readable for me, so an ls /home/myboss doesn't work. But using dsmc I get access to all files of all other users. With dsmc q ba -subd=y /home/myboss/ I get a list of all files of my boss. So I thought it was a better idea to let the new server do the software upgrade. 1) Do I really need to delete and redefine the drives, libray, paths etc? I didn't have to delete the drives etc. For restoring the db on the new server you only need the library and one drive defined in your new TSM server. After restoration (or before) you can define the other drives. 2) Do I really need to run the 'checkin libv' commands. No. You also do not need to copy the dsmserv.dsk to the new server. Linux GUI and client user id
Hi, when I register a new node on the TSM server (AIX v5.3.2.3), I do not assign owner authority to an admin. There wasn't any problem with that, until I started the java gui on a linux client (v5.3.2.0). When I enter the password, I always get the error message ANS1370E The user ID entered does not have the correct level of authority to access the client machine. linux dsmcad problem
Hi, TSM 5.3.2.3 server TSM 5.3.2.0 client on redhat linux I start the dsmcad process with the rc.d script from the technote. The problem is that the schedule only works once. After the backup is finished the client scheduler stops but never gets called again, although the dsmcad process is still running. Admin Center issues
Hi, first of all, I really like the new TSM Administration Center. It's much more concise than the old webadmin interface, IMHO, of course ;-) I'm using the latest version 5.3.2.0 and ISC 6.0.1 (TSM 5.3.2.3). Two problems occur that I don't find in the APAR list: 1. In the Communications window of the client node properties the node's TCP/IP Address doesn't show up. I only see it using the command line (q node xyz f=d). 2. In the Advanced Options window of the storage pool properties the CRC field is not marked, although the option is enabled (q stgpool diskpool1 f=d shows CRC Data: Yes). -- Regards, Dirk Kastens Universitaet Osnabrueck, Rechenzentrum (Computer Center) Albrechtstr. 28, 49069 Osnabrueck, Germany Tel.: +49-541-969-2347, FAX: -2470

Re: Database restore and mirrored volume question
Hi, volumes. If so, I think you have to do the restore prior to setting up the mirrored copies, since the syntax for 'dsmserv format' has no provision for specifying mirrored volumes. I recently had to restore our database. It has mirrored volumes, but the restore was written to the first copy. Hi, Tab Trepagnier schrieb: The bottom line is that I/O Wait time was cut in half. While expiration still takes approximately the same time as on the old setup, the reduction in I/O Wait time means the server has more cycles for other work. So even with a heavy workload, the server still provides very fast response time and can manage dozens of client sessions while doing expiration and reclamation at the same time. That's interesting. I just made some tests on our new server. At first I defined three big dbvolumes (using raw logical volumes), each on a separate hdisk (AIX 5.3), and each being mirrored by TSM on another hdisk. When TSM started up, or when I did an auditdb, only one of the primary volumes was active at a time, with a read throughput of about 1000 kB/s (measured with topas). Then I defined striped logical volumes using three hdisks. During startup or an auditdb all three disks were active at a time, but the read throughput of each disk was degraded to 250 kB/s, what makes 750 kB/s for the whole volume. That means that the throughput was higher with separated volumes. Or did I make a mistake? Regards, Dirk Kastens

With Q DBVOL I only see the available space (size of the formatted volume) and the allocated space (what is assigned to the database). In my case both are the same for all volumes. Re: disk layout for db and log
Jim, Are you going to mirror at the hardware, OS, or application level? I'm going to mirror at the application (TSM) level. Spread the logical volumes across multiple disks at least two. The database, logs, and storage pool volume need to run on their own disks. The stgpool volumes are located in our SAN. If the database and log volumes go on separate disks, I would only have two disks for the db and one for the small recovery log (which are mirrored to the other three disks). I think it could be possible to have on disk with db AND log volumes on it and the other two disks with only db volumes. Re: Incremental failure - NFS?
Hi, 3) Mount file system soft or hard soft NEVER mount an NFS filesystem 'hard'... if the NFS client EVER looses contact with the NFS server, it will hang and it WILL take a reboot to recover. By mounting 'soft', if the NFS clinet looses contact with the NFS server, the mount can be dealt with, ie. unmounted, with a little work. That's not a good advice, IMO. Only use the soft mount, if the filesystem is mounted read-only. Otherwise this could lead to data corruption. For read-write mounted filesystems, use the intr option. Here's an excerpt of the AIX Performance Management Guide: One of the choices you make when configuring NFS-mounted directories is whether the mounts will be hard (-o hard) or soft (-o soft). When, after a successful mount, an access to a soft-mounted directory encounters an error (typically, a timeout), the error is immediately reported to the program that requested the remote access. When an access to a hard-mounted directory encounters an error, NFS retries the operation. A persistent error accessing a hard-mounted directory can escalate into a perceived performance problem because the default number of retries (1000) and the default timeout value (0.7 second), combined with an algorithm that increases the timeout value for successive retries, mean that NFS continues to try to complete the operation. It is technically possible to reduce the number of retries, or increase the timeout value, or both, using options of the mount command. Unfortunately, changing these values sufficiently to remove the perceived performance problem might lead to unnecessary reported hard errors. Instead, use the intr option to mount the hard-mounted directories, which allows the user to interrupt from the keyboard a process that is in a retry loop. Although soft-mounting the directories causes the error to be detected sooner, it runs a serious risk of data corruption. In general, read/write directories should be hard-mounted. Dirk

Re: optimising tcpwindowsize and tcpbuffsizes
Hi, here is an excerpt of the knowledge base article Description of Windows 2000 TCP Features (Q224829). As I understand, the maximum value IS 64 UNLESS the RFC1323 option is used. I'm not a network expert, but why should I set the TCPWINDOWSIZE option to 63? The receive window size is determined in the following manner: 1. The first connection request sent to a remote host advertises a receive window size of 16K (16,384 bytes). 2. When the connection is established, the receive window size is rounded up to an even increment of the MSS. 3. The window size is adjusted to 4 times the MSS, to a maximum size of 64K, unless the window scaling option (RFC 1323) is used. Dirk

Just read the Windows client manual, page 16, Excluding directories: TSM evaluates all exclude.dir statements first (regardless od their position within the include-exclude list)...
