TDP FOR EXCHANGE 2.2

2002-04-02 Thread Gary Swanton

Hi TSM'rs

Just thought that I would share with you all a recent
TSM incident involving TDP for Exchange v2.2 running on a Windows 2000
Server.

A little over 8 months ago a problem arose where we could not
get the Exchange TDP to install on a Windows 2000 server. After many
attempts to install and reinstall the last resort was to completely blow
away the server and reinstall everything. We even did a disaster
recovery install of Exchange 2000 again just in case anything was wrong
with the Exchange installation; thankfully a full server reinstall was
not required.

Anyway after discussing this problem with the code developers
and Microsoft a solution was finally found. Within an Exchange registry
key an entry exists which details the full path to the MAD.exe file.
What was discovered is that the path to the MAD.exe file was
encapsulated with double quotes i.e. file path. After running some
debug code from the Tivoli developers and with the assistance of
Microsoft this anomaly was highlighted. The double quotes were removed
and replaced with single quotes and behold the Exchange TDP worked as it
should have 8months ago.

So if anybody else is or has experienced this problem don't hesitate to
get the developers involved they did a great job in resolving what was a
very long and frustrating problem.

Happy TSMing

Gary

Re: Is there a way to email notifications in TSM?

2002-03-22 Thread Gary Swanton

Hi Tony,

I would be very interested in your method of
posting TSM information to the intranet. My group IT manager is always
asking for TSM info and to post it our intranet would be a great
service.

Just a thought

I prepare a number of reports from TSM each morning and present these on
our
intranet.
Using the NT resource kit (SETX) I have introduced a 31 day cycle of
these
files.
(email me if you want to know how to do this easily).

The benefits are;

wide audience
Management can see results for themselves
automated reporting
less maintenance

I did look at email, but this is better for me!!

You're right there are some expensive solutions. I believe ServerGraph
has
the e-mail notification capability, but in our environment we were
quoted
$35,000 for the initial installation, plus 15% maintenance. TDS for SMA
does not have e-mail notice capablity.

If you check the ADSM.org archive you will find historical responses to
this query which give details on query the activity logs and generating
your own e-mail notices.

We use a DB2 database loaded every morning after backups, which we query
and generate mail from.

So I recommend home-grown the best, least expensive, solution.

SUBFILE BACKUPS FOR LAPTOPS

2002-03-18 Thread Gary Swanton

Hi TSMers,

I have been asked to investigate whether or not
TSM could be used for our laptop and remote access users. Am new to
TSM but have come across the term SUBFILE BACKUPS, would this method be
suitable for such users.

Appreciate any advice available.

Re: RESTORE VOLUMES

2002-02-15 Thread Gary Swanton

Hi Michel,

Thanx for your assistance. It continually frustrates me
that here is a product that out of the box requires the user (read
admin) to have another skill set ie SQL just so he can do reasonable
job.

An admin without the skill set to create SQL queries and alike
(like me) will find that TSM out of the box is about as efficient as an
ashtray on a motorbike.

Guess I better get myself on a course to learn SQL...

Thanx again..

Gary

Hi Garry
CStringArray is a class in MFC (You shlould use ODBC
to connect TSM tables and a Programming language)

If you DO not use C++ or something like it. You have
to use some script editor (PERL...)
I use Norton Dos.
Little example of script.
SETLOCAL
PUSHD C:\Program Files\Tivoli\TSM
EchoC:\Command.txt select file_name from contents
where volume_name='vol1'
DSMADMC -id=admin -password=admin -noconfirm
c:\Command.txt C:\Results.TXT
POPD
ENDLOCAL

This will just generate a file with the file_name
contents of the tape 'vol1'

This is a basis.
I hope you can continue.
Good luck

Michel

 It's possible
Take a look at the ARCHIVES and essentially CONTENTS
 table

 1) select * from contents where volume_name='vol1'
You will get everything in the volume vol1.
 2) Save the info (file_name) in some CStringArray
 3) Sort your info to restore according to the
 volumes

 Good luck.

Not quite sure how to post a message to this list so I have just hit
reply on a post. Please advise me of the correct method.

A question on performing a restore.

How does one determine what tapes (volumes) are required when a restore
is initiated.

Thanx in advance.

Is it indeed true that there is no bitfile object, as the query

TDP for Domino backups are made up of two
TSM server objects. You found one of them.
We call this the header object.
It contains no bitfile data. It contains
meta data that describes the backup.

The other object is the data object.
It has the same name but it has a .DATA
appended to the LL object name. It contains
the bitfile data for the backup.

So in your example, you would have:

   \MAIL\ 123456.NSF (header)
   \MAIL\ 123456.NSF.DATA (data)

I hope this helps.

Thanx Tony,

If I kick off a restore from a client using the GUI, how
do I append the Preview to see the required volumes? Do I have to kick
off the restore from a command line?

You have answered your own question

append preview=yes to your command (the format is different on
platforms)

this will tell you what you need to know.

volumes I will need when I want to carry out a restore - A Preview if

If you have an onsite tapepool then the tapes should mount
automatically.
Otherwise try 'q req' from the TSM server session.
