TSM and mod-27 devices

2003-07-10 Thread Glass, Peter
We're running a V5 TSM Server on an MVS platform, and considering the use of
mod-27s for its DASD needs.
Are there any known issues regarding the use of mod-27 DASD devices for TSM
db, log, or backup/archive pool volumes?
Thanks, in advance.

extending archive retentions

2003-01-22 Thread Glass, Peter
I have some clients who have archived files with 1-year retentions. Now they
say these files need to be retained for 5 years.
Is there a way we can extend these retentions without having to retrieve and
re-archive these files?
If so, how?
Thanks, in advance.

unix trigger for TSM Server processes?

2002-04-23 Thread Glass, Peter

What is the best way to have unix trigger a TSM backup storagepool process?
We need to start this process immediately upon completion of a client's DB2
backup. We can't very well schedule this, because the completion time of the
backup varies widely, from one backup to the next. We can afford to begin
the tape copy process neither too soon, nor too late.
One idea might be to have a DB2 script invoke unix to start something via
/usr/bin/dsmadmc -id=admin -pass=password, et cetera, but this would mean
hardcoding the password with the -pass= parameter, which would present a
security exposure.
Any suggestions on how we might accomplish this would be greatly appreciated
(both the client and server platforms are AIX 4.3.3; TSM is at V4 R2).
Thanks, in advance.

when to recycle client scheduler service?

2002-02-21 Thread Glass, Peter

Hello, Folks!
We happened to have the TSM Server down during a time when a certain client
would have been polled for a backup that was to take place 12 hours later.
Our polling intervals are 4 hours apart. TSM last polled this clients 4
hours previously, and did not resume any polling of this client until the
next day, when the client scheduler service was recycles. In the meantime,
they missed their backup.

Did polling for this client stop because the TSM Server happened to be down
during the time this client would have been polled? Does missing even 1 poll
suffice to require recycling of the scheduler service for the client?

It seems that we are always needing to have clients recycle their scheduler
services, for reasons often unclear. We often don't know until the client
has missed their backup -- we really need to know beforehand, so we can
better prevent missed schedules. If somebody can produce or point us to a
summary of which conditions require recycling of client scheduler services,
we would be most grateful.
We would also welcome any other tips on how to deal with this situation --
especially if there is a way to automate this into a non-issue.
Thanks, in advance.

Tivoli website/Explorer access problem

2002-01-07 Thread Glass, Peter

Starting about 2 months ago, I've been unable to use Explorer for downloads
from the Tivoli website. I get a pop-up window (with Microsoft-type
graphics) that says: Either the server does not allow anonymous logins, or
the email address was not accepted. The FTP server here is
service.boulder.ibm.com. It does not accept any logins, passwords, or email
addresses that I supply.
I opened a problem ticket with Tivoli about this, but Tivoli was unable to
replicate this problem on their side, so they concluded that this is not a
Tivoli problem, and therefore could not help me.
Fortunately for me, this problem does not occur when I use Netscape (Long
Live Netscape!).
Has anybody else experienced this same situation with Explorer?
Any ideas on how to get around this?
Thanks, in advance.

exclude syntax frustration

2002-01-04 Thread Glass, Peter

TSM seems to ignore our exclude statements, no matter which wildcard syntax
we use. For example, we have filesystems called /db1/oracle, /db2/oracle,
etc. through /db30/oracle that we want to exclude. We've tried:
exclude /db[1-30]/oracle/.../*
and
exclude /db*/oracle/.../*
and
exclude /.../oracle/.../*
without success: in each case, the backups still try to backup the files
under these directories. The backups usually fail to pick up the files,
because the files change during the backup, which is why we want to exclude
them.
Are we misunderstanding how wildcards are supposed to work with exclude
statements? Or is this a product bug?

abrupt change in request number format

2001-11-04 Thread Glass, Peter

We have a script that automates the operator REPLY command requirement for
tape ejects.

The operator request number that the REPLY is issued against has always been
a 3-digit number, with leading zeros (e.g. reply 001), and our script is
written accordingly. However, a few days ago, the request numbers suddenly
converted to a 1-digit number format, for no apparent reason. This causes
the script to fail.

Anybody know what would cause the format of operator request numbers to
suddenly change from a 3-digit number to a 1-digit number?

How can we change the request number format back to the original 3-digit
format?

We are running TSM V3 R2 L1.2 on Solaris 8.
Thanks, in advance.

Re: large client multi-streamed backups

2001-09-11 Thread Glass, Peter

Len,
In many cases, all files are grouped under the same filespace, but are to be
split off into multiple backup sessions beneath that. For example:
 Session 1
/usr/oracle/ad/dev/sys/sys01
/usr/oracle/dev/data/rtdat0t01.db
/usr/oracle/dev/index/rtdat0i01.db
/usr/oracle/dev/data/rtdat0t04.db
/usr/oracle/dev/index/rtdat0i04.db
/usr/oracle/dev/rollbk/rbs01.db
/usr/oracle/dev/data/rtusr0t01.db
Session 2
/usr/oracle/dev/data/rttmp0t01.db
/usr/oracle/ad/dev/log/redo01.db
/usr/oracle/dev/log/redo01a.db
/usr/oracle/ad/dev/log/redo02.db
/usr/oracle/dev/log/redo02a.db
/usr/oracle/ad/dev/log/redo03.db
/usr/oracle/dev/log/redo03a.db
/usr/oracle/ad/dev/controlfile/ctrl01.db
/usr/oracle/dev/sys/ctrl02.db

Both sessions are to each back up files from under the /usr/oracle/ad and
the /usr/oracle/dev directory paths. These directory paths also contain
files of other databases that will be active during the backup, so wildcards
cannot be used, in order to avoid active files.

For now, the only way I can see to do this is to set up a separate schedule
for each group, and specify each file individually in the OBJECTS field. But
isn't there a cleaner way to do this?

large client multi-streamed backups

2001-09-10 Thread Glass, Peter

We are converting our Netbackup clients to TSM. Some of these clients are
large DB2 and Oracle clients with tight processing windows. Most of these
clients have chosen not to use TDP or SQL Backtrack. The solution in
Netbackup was to spread their workloads across several backup classes that
ran concurrently.
Can TSM clients be setup to multi-stream their backups in similar fashion?
Unless I'm missing something, I'm not seeing where TSM has the kind of
granularity that allows a client node to be setup to run its backups in
several concurrent sessions, where each session backs up its own
pre-determined set of files.
Any advice on this, or where I might find a solution?
Thanks, in advance.

moving node data using server to server

2001-08-27 Thread Glass, Peter

Is it possible to EXPORT node data from a source server and then IMPORT them
into a target server using the Server to Server feature?

All discussion on Server to Server in the Admin Guide seems to focus on
Virtual Volume storage. This doc does not indicate whether data EXPORTed to
a target server can then be IMPORTed into the same target server -- it only
states that EXPORT data residing on virtual volumes of the target server can
then be IMPORTed to a third server. This seems to imply that it cannot be
IMORTed into the second (target) server. Correct?

If so, then an alternate method I thought of might be to EXPORT the node
data locally to native source server devices, and then issue the IMPORT
command from the target server. If a third server can IMPORT data from the
target (second) server, then it seems logical to assume that the target
server should be able to IMPORT directly from the source server

Except, I'm concerned that the Server to Server feature may apply
exclusively to the use of Virtual Volumes, in which case this alternate
method might not work either, because this data was EXPORTed to local
volumes, rather than Virtual Volumes.
Any insights or advice on how we might accomplish this task would be most
welcome.
Thanks, in advance.

LUN sizes in TSM hardware config

Does TSM have a maximum LUN size that a TSM Server will support?

We are setting up a new SUN/Solaris TSM Server environment, and want to make

Are there any solid recommendations available on this?

EXPORT-IMPORT clients from OS390 Server to Unix Server?

2001-07-27 Thread Glass, Peter

Hi All!
Is it possible to EXPORT client data from an OS390 Server to a Unix Server?
The Tivoli docs all seem to say yes -- provided that the target Server is
running the same or newer Server level code.
However, a hardware vendor pointed out to me that this may not be possible:
If the OS390 Server writes the EXPORT data to MVS tape devices in either
EBCDIC or ASCII format, the target Server may not be able to read the tapes
for the IMPORT. Because the target Server is configured with SCSI-attached
devices, the data on the tapes must also be in SCSI format, otherwise the
target Server will not be able to read them.
Any truth to this theory?
Thanks, in advance.

filesystem sharing between TSM and UDB

Our DBAs are proposing that we move our TSM database and recovery logs into

idea.
Does anybody have any insight as to the feasibility of this idea?

Can TSM directory paths, names be changed?

When the TSM Server software for AIX is installed, it rolls out a directory
path of /usr/tivoli/tsm/...
Is it safe to change this, or must the directory paths and names be kept
intact?
We are about to move TSM onto new disk, and the system administrators have
this idea of moving TSM into a different filesystem other than
/usr/tivoli/tsm.
This idea seems questionable to me, but would like to confirm whether this

Database Recovery Fails

2001-06-08 Thread Glass, Peter

We're attempting a point-in-time recovery of our ADSM Database.
ADSM Release is at Version 3 Release 1 Level 2.50, running on platform OS390
Level 2.10.
The recovery is through batch JCL:

//SERVER EXEC PGM=DSMSERV,DYNAMNBR=300,TIME=NOLIMIT,
//   PARM='/RESTORE DB TOD=05/01/2001 TOT=17:00:00'

However, when we run the recovery batch job, ADSM appears to ignore the
RESTORE DB. Instead, it goes right into the following:
ANR5140I HTTP (IBM) communications is listening for clients on port
ANR5090I TCP/IP driver ready for connection with clients on port
ANR0259E Unable to read complete restart/checkpoint information from any
database or recovery log volume.
...and then the batch job terminates.
We have used this identical recovery job in the past without any problem.
The last time we ran this successfully, it was under OS390 2.8. Now we're
under OS390 2.10.

Any ideas?

Unable to init TCP/IP driver in OS390 2.10

2001-05-07 Thread Glass, Peter

We just upgraded our development MVS to OS390 2.10. Since then, ADSM
generates this error:
ANR5092E Unable to initialized TCP/IP driver - error creating acceptor
socket.

TCP/IP is up and running, and still under the same name that it's always
had.
We are running ADSM Version 3, Release 1, Level 2.50.
Would this be a release incompatibility issue (we're aware that this release
of ADSM is no longer supported), between ADSM and the new OS390?
Any other ideas on what may cause this error?

db2 backups not expiring

All,
Does anybody know why wouldn't db2 backups expire, when, in theory, they

We have an AIX-SP environment, with TSM 4.1, server and clients. DB2 data is

the DB2 backup images have ever expired. We run inventory expiration daily.
