Re: Expiration problem with TSM 5.1.1.1 on AIX 4.3.3
Same here on 5.1.1.1 - looks like the stall (error message is that a resource waiter has been aborted) happens whenever database change-intensive processes run at the same time when expiration runs. I had this happen when move nodedata ran concurrent with expiration and also when migration ran concurrent with expiration. Good news is that if you wait one hour, the resource waiter is aborted. In the case of move nodedata, the process was aborted. In the case of migration, I cancelled the processes and after an hour expiration picked up and completed successfully. During my stalls, some backups and restores also stalled, also a q content of a volume stalled. Backups and restores continued after the hour wait. I also have the problem fixed in 5.1.1.2 where delete filespace will not delete W2K system objects - has anyone installed 5.1.1.2 in a production environment yet? For the expiration I get ANR0819I Cancel in progress. For the last migration process the cancel was accepted, but there was no effect. Everything else (Backup sessions, admin commands) seems to work.Colleagues from a neighbour university have this problem as well. Re: Licensing problems on TSM for Windows 5.1.1.0
I have upgraded from 5.1.0.2 to 5.1.1.0. The code is in the maintenance - not the patches - directory on the ftp server, eg. for the windows server it's at ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/maintenance/server/v5r1/WIN/LATEST/ Mark, you are absolutely correct, the mgsyslan.lic, oracle.lic registrations with number=n works fine. Thanks for the tip. All nnwhatever.lic files are still in the product directory. I suspect it's because I have upgraded as opposed to doing a fresh install. Dava Canan, you can close the PMR. Re: tsm 5.1
Not sure which Web Gui you are referring to - the Web client Gui is now various shades of light blue - most appropriate with the renaming of TSM to IBM TSM. The Web admin Gui has minor restructuring in that the Storage Agent stuff and the NAS and Server free enhancements have moved to the "Server Storage" link under object view. Re: TSM Database Tables
Even better is to install the sample scripts. Shut down your server, then do a dsmserv runfile /usr/tivoli/tsm/server/webimages/scripts.smp if your server is on AIX (on other platforms the file is in the appropriate directory/data set/minidisk - if you cannot find it, I'll be glad to send it to you). Then restart your server and all you need to do is run Q_TABLES to get a nicely formatted list of tables. My second favourite script is to "run Q_COLUMNS " to get the columns in a table. Many thanks to the developer in TSM who provided this sample set. There are many other useful examples in this set of sample scripts that have helped me with SQL SELECT statements. Re: Your response to my LTO tape questions.
Jim, I have seen this before, even on TSM 4.2 and I don't know under what circumstances this < 100% statistic arises. I believe it to be an error. I have not experienced the SCSI error referred to by Steve Bennett in his posting on LTO tapes (reclamation processing of these large tapes worked fine). The APAR that covers his problems specifically refers to 8mm Mammoth 2 tapes where more than 268GB is written. Perhaps someone from development can comment further if the APAR applies to other device types. Re: I don't think she can hold much more Captain! She's gonna blow! (IBM LTO Tape)
I have seen exactly the same type of results. One of my customers routinely gets 250+GB per tape; and in one other instance my customer got 400+GB, similar to what you are experiencing. Compression results are a function of the type of data. If you are using collocation, the compressability becomes more obvious for the type of data because a given node is clustered on a cartridge. For example if your clients compress their data, you will find tape capacities much closer to 100GB. In my case, the 400+ GB client was an API database client that sent very compressable data. Remember that the total amount of data written to the tape only shows up when the tape is marked "full". When it is "filling", TSM will keep on writing to the tape and you will see the Estimated Capacity increase. My real issue is with the Status. It says that the tape is still filling, yet its Pct Util is only at 95%. I don't get this. I thought that a tape get to 100% full and the Est Cap keeps increasing until EOT is met. Marc, see my previous append - you CAN restore an individual file using the CLI (NOT the GUI nor the Web Client). Yes, a slot is used when you check in a cleaning cartridge. Make sure you have the correct bar code on it (CLNInn - as described in the 3583 book). I to have set drives to ASNEEDED. Anyone familiar with the 3583 LTO drive? I just installed the L36 model (36 tapes) yesterday. There is an extra slot at the top of each column of 18 tapes that seems to be the perfect spot for a cleaning tape. But i cannot find documentation to support this. Can this drive hold a cleaning tape internally (as the 3570 does) or must i give up one of the 36 tape slots for a cleaning tape. Also the options for cleaning in the docs are manual, or "host based" meaning the software decides when to clean it. I'm guessing i set it to "host based" and set the drives to ASNEEDED. Is this a correct setup for automatic cleaning? Re: MagStar Tape Library #3575 vs. LTO
Great idea, Miles. Some of my installations use older technology, e.g DLT or 8mm Mammoth for offsite DR and use LTO for on-site normal backup. This way the investment in old technology is redeployed. With DLT and 8mm you don't have the slow-as-molasses reclamation processing if these technologies are used for DR. Offsite reclamation only produces output tapes and hence can even be used with small single-drive DLT libraries since the input for offsite reclamation comes from the LTO library. Let the tape boys so the drive drivers, but let you TSM guys do the library. Leaving it to Microsoft is a real bad idea! While we're on this topic: I'm having trouble getting tapes to label properly in a 3584. The barcodes on the tapes (provided with the IBM tapes) have eight characters. label libvol appears to label them correctly, but when attempts are made to use the tapes we're getting an I/O error reading the labels. Are we limited to six characters? If so, why do the LTO specified labels have eight characters (six useful ones with the last two being L1)? Any ideas how to work around this short of using a magic marker to wipe out the L1? TSM recognizes that there are some short comings with RSM and will be providing the ability to define 3581, 3583 and 3584 libraries as type SCSI in the near future. This will be accomplished with updates to ADSMSCSI to control the medium-changer in the 3581, 3583 and 3584 libraries. This work is currently in test and will be released as a PTF when it completes the test process. The README will document how to migrate from an RSM environment to a SCSI environment. TSM will continue to support the definition of the library as type RSM for those customers who wish to utilize RSM. With the introduction of the SSD LTO technology, TSM has changed how it supports SSD tape devices and uses the SSD device driver to control the LTO drives on the NT platforms. Now SSD LTO customers can easily download microcode updates and perform other serviceability functions. Whether RSM or ADSMSCSI controls the medium-changer in the library, the SSD device driver will control the LTO drives. Kelly J. I have experienced the same thing. A number of files seem to have been forgotten in the 4.1.0.0/4.1.1.0 NT server packages. All these file are useful, but the most valuable ones for me have been scripts.smp and ibmtsm.mac (the latter can easily be adapted to other external event receivers). The others are ibmadsm.baroc, ibmtsm.baroc, ibmtsm.rls, mib2adsm.tbl, userexitsample.c, userexitsample.h, userexitsample.rc, and adsmserv.mib. If anyone has not saved these files from their 3.7.3 environment, please send me a note and I'll send them to you. ADSM-L does not allow me to attach them here. Joerg Pohlmann

Re: Configuring dsm.sys and dsm.opt for multiple clients on one host
Herb, why don't you use client option sets - that way you don't put anything into any of the TSM client directories and furthermore, any change can be done at the TSM server via Web Admin as opposed to having to go to the client and editing dsm.sys/opt files. Joerg Pohlmann "Herb Girard/CanWest/IBM" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> on 2000-11-07 11:26:53 AM Please respond to "ADSM: Dist Stor Manager" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> To: [EMAIL PROTECTED] cc: Subject: Configuring dsm.sys and dsm.opt for multiple clients on one host Our environment includes an AIX/HACMP cluster. Some disks are shared, non-concurrently, by the active and standby hosts. We have configured three TSM client nodes, one permanently on each host to back up its non-shared disks, and a third that runs on whichever host is accessing the shared disks. In order to do this, we need separate include/exclude lists for the nodes, which requires separate dsm.sys files. The TSM 3.7 "Installing the clients" manual (p.34) says "Do not put any user created files into /usr/tivoli/tsm/clients/ba/bin, the directory into which the TSM product is installed Include-exclude files, dsm.opt and dsm.sys files should not reside in this directory". Later on (p.48) the same manual says that the DSM_DIR environmnet variable must "point to the executable file dsmtca, the resource files, and the dsm.sys file. ... If DSM_DIR is not set, the executables are expected in the default installation directory." Sounded to me like you can;t get there from here. Our solution was to make a copy of /usr/tivoli/tsm/clients/ba/bin, put the second client's dsm.sys and dsm.opt files in there and point to it with DSM_DIR and DSM_CONFIG. This works but seems kind of clumsy. Has anyone else encountered this problem and found a more elegant solution? Re: ANS1312E Server media mount not possible
If you are on TSM 3.7/4.1 and have migrated from ADSM 3.1, please make sure that the mount point limit for the node is > 0 if you are directing data to tape (check your copygroups). In upgrading the data base, the default mount limit for existing nodes is zero, for newly-defined nodes it is two. You can change the limit using upd node * maxnummp=2 or whatever number of drives you'd like the client to use. Apparently, the server immediately knew that it could not satisfy the request: there was no timeout as indicated in the ANS1312E message description, and MOUNTWait could not be the issue since its unit of measurement is minutes, and the rejection here was in seconds. You didn't say, but I'll assume that you are set up to back up directly to tape. I'll also assume the common collocation choice of "by node". In that case the server would want to append the new data to the end of the tape that it was last filling for that node. Perhaps that volume is in a peculiar state - not bad enough to cause the server to go use a new scratch or, if no scratches left, the end of any other tape. See if you can determine what that tape was, from the prior successful backup for that node reflected in the Activity Log or queries, and then do a Query Volume F=D to see what it's state is; and also check that it is still in the library. If you are backing up to an intermediate disk storage pool, check its status and capacity. Beyond that, see if there is any dsmerror log with further indications. Richard Sims, BU
