Re: Help me convincing IBM please!!!!

Hi *SM-ers!
Please help me with this and take the time to read this request

We're having serious performance problems with our TSM database. Part of the
discussion with IBM is how expiration should perform.
A technical document on the TSM website stated that one should be able to
expire 3.8 million objects per hour. As soon as I referred to this document
(How to determine when disk tuning is needed) IBM removed it from their
site
Expiration runs at a speed of 140.000 objects per hour in my shop an I know
for sure that some of you are running at 3.8 million or more and I like to
prove this to IBM.

I'm begging for your help with this. I would like to ask you to issue the
following SQL statements on your TSM server(s) and send the output directly
to me: [EMAIL PROTECTED]:

select activity, cast ((end_time) as date) as Date
,(examined/cast((end_time-start_time) seconds as decimal(18,13)) *3600)
Objects Examined Up/Hr from summary where activity='EXPIRATION' and days
(end_time)-days(start_time)=0

select pct_utilized, avail_space_mb from db

The first statement calculates your expiration performance (objects/hour)
and the second one lists your database size and utilization.
Thank you VERY much for sending me your statistics in advance, I REALLY
appreciate it!!!
Kindest regards,
Eric van Loon

There is a beta SMS patch you have to install. Here is the link.

And you need to make sure you are running the 5.2.2 client since that
is the only one IBM supports with Netware 6.5.

which we hope to share between the 2 TSM servers. We would like to
have 2
fibre interfaces per drive in order to eliminate a single point of

My question is, how does TSM know which path it is using to the drive
and
how does it know that one of the paths to an individual drive is
already in
use? Is there software out there to manage this or is it done through
the
hardware configuration? If anyone has any suggestions I would
appreciate
it! Thanks!

I got messages

ANR0984I Process 622 for RESTORE VOLUME (PREVIEW) started in the

ANR1256W Volume 000345 contains files that could not be restored.

I assume that means the files didn't get copied to the backup pool
before the tape got flaky.

At this point, I guess I have to assume those backups are toast. If
they are inactive versions, I can shrug and say I hope they never
want to restore the old versions. But, as far as I can tell, there
is no way to tell whether a backup on a specific tape is active or
inactive. If that's true, I need to assume they might be active and
get new backups of them.

If I just delete the volume, with discarddata=yes, and the backups
are active versions, will that force TSM to realize it no longer has
an active backup of those files, and back them up again the next time
the node is backed up?

Re: 3590 upgrade steps.

2003-01-21 Thread Julian Armendariz
for each type of drives will
allow the user to specify the format for the drive and insure
that 3590/3590E volumes will not be mounted on 3590H drives
and that 3590H volumes will not be mounted on 3590/3590E drives.

Defining a logical library for each type of drives will allow
to define two separate storage pools of scratch volumes.
It is necessary to allow write the label for the volume
in the appropriate format.

Moving a scratch volume from 3590/3590E scratch pool
to 3590H scratch pool:

  - TSM command: CHECKOut LIBVolume libraryname volname REMove=No
  - TSM command: CHECKIn LIBVolume libraryname SEARCH=Yes
Note: In order to move volume from 3590/3590E scratch pool to 3590H
scratch pool issue above commands and RELABEL the volume
after it has been checked in the 3590/3590E library.

IN ORDER TO READ THE VOLUME PREVIOUSLY WRITTEN IN 3590/3590E FORMAT
ON 3590H DRIVE (THE STORAGE POOL THAT OWNS THE VOLUME POINTS
TO A DEVCLASS THAT USES 3590H drive):
- UPDATE ACCESS MODE TO THAT VOLUME TO READONLY
   update volume volumename access=readonly whereaccess=readwrite
- CHECKOUT THE VOLUME FROM THE LOGICAL 3590/3590E LIBRARY
  (THE DEVCLASS' OLD LIBRARY THAT HAD 3590/3590E DRIVES);
- CHECKIN THE VOLUME TO THE LOGICAL 3590H LIBRARY
(THE DEVCLASS' NEW LIBRARY THAT CONTAINS 3590H DRIVES).

Private volumes defined in private categories:

The volumes defined in private category have to be marked READONLY in
order to read data from them on 3590H drives. After data is expired
and volume becomes empty its access type is still READONLY because
this volume was directly defined in the private category. In order
to reuse volumes with expired data on 3590H drives the access type of
these volumes must be updated to READWRITE type. The user may update
all volumes to READWRITE type with the following TSM command:
update volume volumename/ *(all of them) access=readwrite
   whereaccess=readonly wherestatus=empty
There are also SQL scripts that will allow the user to query all volumes
with above mentioned attributes.

Next time the empty volume is mounted on 3590H drive for writing,
it will be AUTOMATICALLY relabeled using 3590H format. This volume
can be used neither for reading nor for writing on 3590/3590E drives.

Scratch volumes:

Next time the empty volume is mounted on 3590H drive for writing,
it will be AUTOMATICALLY relabeled using 3590H format. This volume
can be used neither for reading nor for writing on 3590/3590E drives.

Easy way to tell is to

show versions {node name} SYSTEM OBJECT

and look for excessive amounts of records that have **EXPIRE IMMEDIATELY**

Bruce,

I don't think so.

To tell, look at the occupancy object count for your sys-objects. I would
think that = 20,000 for an average system is not unreasonable, but the
figure varies with the copygroup settings, whether active-directory is in
use, etc.

We have had counts 1.1 _million_ for some sys-objects!

Check with your support. We are still getting e-fixes for various aspects
of system object expiration and also cleanup backupgroups.

Hi,

We want upgrade the drives in our 3494-library from E-models to H-models

in the next weeks.
After the upgrade we have only H-models in the library with J and K
tapes.
We will change the access to READONLY for all filling, full tapes.

My question concerns the scratch volumes.

In my opinion it isn't necessary to relabel the scratch tapes with
384-tracks. The VCR will do that with the first mount on the
H-drive automatically.

I'm right or ???

My problem was that I used Install and Update from LATEST Available

Re: return export volume to scratch

2002-03-08 Thread Julian Armendariz

You will need to check QUERY LIBVOLUME and make sure the volume is there and the
status is PRIVATE. Then you can issue the command UPDATE LIBVOLUME 0ACFB3
STATUS=SCRATCH then I think you will need to issue the comand CHECKOUT LIBVOLUME
3575LIB 0ACFB3 REMOVE=NO and then you can try the CHECKIN command again.

Good Morning All,

I have a tape volume that was used to export a node. I would like
to check that volume back in as scratch. I'm having trouble finding the
answer.

Here is an excerpt from the actlog showing what I have tried.

ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: CHECKIN libvolume 3575lib
0ACFB3 status=scratch checklabel=yes
ANR8443E CHECKIN LIBVOLUME: Volume 0ACFB3 in library 3575LIB cannot be
assigned a status of SCRATCH.

ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: LABEL libvolume 3575lib
search=yes labelsource=barcode checkin=scratch
ANR8816E LABEL LIBVOLUME: Volume 0ACFB3 in library 3575LIB cannot be
labelled because it is currently defined in a storage pool or in the
volume history file.

ANR2017I Administrator ADMIN issued command: DELETE VOLUME 0ACFB3
discarddata=yes
ANR2401E DELETE VOLUME: Volume 0ACFB3 is not defined in a storage pool.

Any tips?

Thanks,
Jon Martin

Re: how to identify ofsite tapes for specific node

2002-03-07 Thread Julian Armendariz

My knowledge of select statements is fairly limited but you will probably have to use
the information in the BACKUPS table but I am unsure how to figure out which tape the
file is stored on. My guess is to use the OBJECT_ID field and there must be another
table that stores what tape that OBJECT_ID is on.

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 03/07/02 02:53AM
Julian,

I have been having a look at using your select statement below and with
slight modifications I am getting the number of tapes that are needed for
each filespace for the particular node. I believe that the results brought
back by this select command are effectively any tape which has a file from
the particular filespace, whether it be an active copy or an inactive copy.

I tested this by running the statement against a filespace on a node and it
came back with a list of 7 tapes that would be needed. I then performed a
selective backup of that filespace and allowed the overnight processing to
do its stuff (updating all the offsite pools). Checking the results this
morning instead of just having one tape returned, 8 tapes were listed.

My question to you or anyone out there who knows more about select
statements than me (a lot of people I reckon) is:

Is there a select statement that would bring back a list of tapes that would
be needed to restore a particular filespace for a node that only takes into
account the active files needed?

Thanks in advance

Steve Copper

File Expiration Problems

2002-02-28 Thread Julian Armendariz

I have a node running version 42121 on Solaris 7 I had a disk slice on that box
that was called /Backup_Storage about 1 year ago our UNIX administrator created a new
disk slice called /Backup_Storage2 and then he deleted the other disk slice When I
run the Backup/Archive client and click on Restore I still see the directory
/Backup_Storage and the last backup of the files under that directory which were
backed up on 11/29/00

I understand that I can just delete the filespace from the TSM server and it will go
away but I was wondering why the files and directory are still there And if this is
happening then maybe other files that have been removed from the client haven't been
deleted from the TSM server

Here is a copy of our copy group:
