We may be bringing a TSM Library Manager into our TSM server farm environment,
so the Library Manager would be able to
service all tape requests from the TSM servers that our requested in the

run of the exact same command finished in 1/4 of the first run time and
moved no data. (no changes to the data between runs) This indicates
that there is a time savings for the incremental passes should the
process end before completion.

Has anyone used this method to move TBs of data between TSM servers

Are there any other faster ways to move the data?

FYI
My preference is the p-series for AIX it does more work and very
flexible for TSM,
I would use the p 570 and use LPARS for the TSM Library Manger if I had the
choice of machine to deploy for TSM.
As I am running currently in our TSM server farm of 3 P-series machines (p
630, 6H1, and an older M80) all AIX 5.300-03.
Great TSM servers, but other have decided that it is time to deploy another
venders machine to save on cost.
We are backing up 4.5 to 5 TB each night with about 100 RMAN for Oracle
backups using TDPO.

Allow me to spin the question ever so slightly:

PC Server Hardware (like Dells) --OR-- IBM p-Series Hardware?

We are in the planning phases of a TSM rollout and our consultant is
pushing us towards the p-Series line (somewhere in the neighborhood of a
550). We are deploying in a pretty large environment, so it sounds
justifiable. I suppose I am looking for a second opinion of sorts,
just to make sure we're getting the best bang for our buck.

Wanda,

We've been using DiskXtender for a few months. It works, though it can be
tricky to set up. We did not integrate it with our TSM system. Instead
we redeployed a Pentium-3 server with two full pods of SCSI disks as our
media store.

However, according to the DiskXtender 6.0 Admin Guide dated Jan 2006,

If you already use or plan to use Tivoli Storage Manager Server (TSM)
as a data storage or data backup system, File System Manager allows
you to configure a TSM system as a media service so that you can
migrate files from File System Manager to a TSM server. This method
utilizes the storage devices supported and managed by the TSM
server.

So at least for now, the TSM compatible version is still being marketed.
That could change at any time of course, but that's the latest info I
have.

Justin,

I'm not sure how many clients are doing LAN-based or/and SAN-based backups,
but if you don't have any performance problem now with given config, most
likely you will not get the performance hit using SATA diskpools. The
reason being is that most 'slowness' during backup,if any, is in
client/server processing time, not at device level even with SATA because
host will get the I/O acknowledgement from the cache on the controllers.
Having said that, if you run out of cache, write-miss will happen direct to
SATA drives, which will be a big problem. So, plan ahead with providing
enough caching for all write I/Os; If you're thinking IBM, DS 4300s would
be just fine, but bringing them under SVC sounds even better in terms of
integrating with existing ESS. If EMC, see Tab's comment. I'm running IBM
solution with SVC and it works fine for me.

Balancing the load through LAN (jumbo frame) and LAN free with virtual
tapes (3592) and multiple LAN/SAN cards always will help to cope with
limited backup window for that much data. Also, when possible, combining
flashcopy/volumecopy/snapshot at the storage level and use TSM
-snapshotroot option would be other helpful options. When all LAN and SAN
pipe get full during backup, you may have no chioce, but snapshot of
volumes.

After all, it may not be a quick and simple to introduce SATA in TSM
environment, but it certainly gives viable options for hardworking TSM
admins like you.

Gus

 [EMAIL PROTECTED] 07/12/05 8:13 PM

Justin,

My concerns are that we will slow down the client backups when we have so
many clients running in a small backup window.
If we use SATA or FC ATA drive for the primary disk storage pool.

We use ATA in an EMC Clariion as primary disk storage pools. We keep TSM
caching turned OFF, simply because the disks are so large that caching
doesn't buy us much.

We have found that using EMC five-disk RAID-3 arrays for disk pools yields
a consistent 40-50 MB/s when pushed by our 2-way 6H1. We use EMC
PowerPath to load-balance the data paths to the LUNs.
On the other hand, because the ATA hot spare is in the TSM pod, we also
created a four-disk RAID-5 array. On that array, we're lucky if we peak
at 18 MB/s and sustained performance is usually 12 MB/s or less. All
measurements obtained via topas. EMC Clariion code is optimized for (4 x
n + 1) disk arrays. I don't know about IBM's. So that's a factor in the
performance difference between the two types of arrays.

Our two RAID-3 arrays are 1188 GB each, and our one RAID-5 array is 891
GB.

We target our file servers to the RAID-3 arrays and have not observed any
performance issues. Our Domino and Oracle databases write straight to
LTO-1 tape. We point small application servers and CAD workstations at
the RAID-5 array, and for those clients, performance is not really an
concern. If a backup takes a few minutes longer, so what?

We have about 160 clients backing up between 8 pm and 6 am. We have no
issues about meeting backup windows since all backups are hot. Our
largest file server has almost two million files, and a typical backup
takes about five hours. Most of that is client directory scanning and we
are considering using journaling when we go to TSM 5.3 in a couple months.
Also, that server is now hosted by VMWare so all I/O has to pass through
the VMWare kernel. We have seen a performance drop using VMWare,
especially when sending to ATA disks.
On last night's backup of that file server, the average network data
transfer rate was just under 10 MB/s. We can live with that. I've
personally seen the 6H1 swallow 70 MB/s through its NIC so I know the TSM
server is not a bottleneck.

Just info.

OK May be I was not clear what we would use the SATA or FC ATA for would
be the primary disk storage pools for nightly backup window
then next morning we would be migrating the backup data to tapes ( FC 3592
jaguar drives ), current primary storage pools are Enterprise class
(shark disks) and our disk storage pool is currently 1.7 TB for nightly
backup that is what we call cache pool, on one TSM Server and another
TSM server we have 1.6 TB of primary storage pool, then we have a small TSM
server that has 1/2 TB of primary storage pool. In all we backup up 513
clients nightly with the 3 TSM servers and data that is backed up runs
between 2.7 TB to 3.2 TB. in a backup window of 6 to 8 hours. We do have
about 100
Oracle RMAN backups included in the backup window running TSM TDPO backups.

Justin,

You may need to tell us more about your configuration and how much data and
how long you need to keep the data before any migration with cache turned
on/off. As you mentioned, you may not need the enterprise class stg for
these particular diskpools unless your SLA requires certain strictness in
performance. Because of the nature of SATA, write I/Os will be troublesome
in any case, so make sure that the controller have enough cache and destage
it later. Some people make mistake buying with single controller config,
but remember that you can't afford to lose it during client backups. Look
for the new SATA II which comes with a lot of fixes and also,

TSM takes pretty much any disks that OS sees as available so consider
giving multiple diskpools. Depending on what tape storage you have, but
writing direct to tape device today is not a bad idea in many cases, so
consider not only diskpool for immediate writes, but also tape devices such
as FC LTO2 or LTO3. For the better pricing, ATA drives with proper RAID
config could be considered.

When configured correctly, SATA drives will be performing as good as other
types of disks. I've been running and happy with them for a while for TSM
and other applications. Hope this helps.

We are looking at SATA for TSM cache pools is why the questions because
we are using enterprise class storage for cache pools on TSM currently at a
high cost.

Looking for cheaper disks for TSM cache pools.

For SPARC, we are currently targetting end of 2Q05 or beginning of 3Q05.
Note that this is not a formal announcement or commitment, and is subject
to change at the discretion of IBM. If you need a more formal answer, you
should consult with your IBM marketing or account representative.

There are no plans for x386 support at this time.

EXPORT question

2005-02-22 Thread Justin Case
What happens to a node's data on a TSM server that has exported from one
TSM server to another TSM server ?

Does any thing happen on the server where the node was exported from ?
Because we want to test some different retention levels on the server where
the node's data
was imported to so is there any risk to the data where it originally
resided ?
Has any one tested any thing like this ?

We are not planning to backup any more data to the node that was exported
on the destination server where
we imported it. but to keep backups running on the original TSM server.
Thanks

This management class with (versions data exists = 3) will keep 3 versions

1 active and 2 inactive version if there is a 4th version of a file it

moved file on Netware ?

2004-05-18 Thread Justin Case
We have a question on an issue that came on a Netware box, that a user
moved some
of directory tree from the original backup tree to another tree. Then we
had a restore request
for the original tree which was moved. So we could not find any files to
restore. We had the
default backup copy group set to version exist 2, version delete 1, retain
extra 30, and retain only 365.
So why was there not any inactive files to restore for the original tree?
Need help in an explanation of what happen.
TSM client code 5.2.2.0
TSM server code 5.2.2.3 OS AIX 5.1.0.5 64bit

So is a move of files on a system from one branch to another not a delete?

A move of files is in effect a delete of the files in original
location.
If you look at dsmsched.log for next backup after a move you
will see those files expiring.

Most likely answer is that they weren't being backed up to start with.
Maybe there was an exclude for this folder?

You do not need a TEC.
You must have a TSM server at least 5.1.8 or 5.2.2
(It may work at earlier levels, but is not supported).

If you have a WIn2K TSM server at 5.2.2 or above, TOR is already installed,
along with the server code.

If you have a lower level Win2K TSM server, or a non-Win2K TSM server, you
can run TOR on some other Win2K, Win2003, or WinXP machine.
TOR is a separate windows application, nicely packaged. Installing it on a
WIn2K or WInXp desktop works nicely.
It has no hooks into TSM code, it just issues queries and formats the
output
into html or email for you.

It is more about doing daily monitoring for errors and problems than
collecting usage data; it won't replace the accounting log, and has nothing
really about tape usage.

To install, first go here:
ftp://service.boulder.ibm.com/storage/tivoli-storage-management/patches/serv

er/NT/5.2.2.2/

Download JUST the TSMCON5222_WIN.exe package to your desktop (assuming you
have WIn2K or WInXP).
Execute it to install on your desktop.

NOW look in the Program Files\tivoli\tsm\console directory, there is a nice
README with a lot of information.

Look in the 5.2.2 (not 5.2.0) TSM for Windows Admin Guide, there is a
chapter on TSM Operational Reporter that tells you how to configure it.
It's very simple to set up, it really takes only a few clicks to start
generating reports.

It's a very nice starter kit for new TSM admins.
You can do a limited amount of customizing, but if your scripts are
complex, TOR probably will not replace them.

My biggest complaint is the lack of information about how tapes are
utilized, and that you can't get to the README until after you do the
install!

My biggest complaint is the lack of information about how tapes are
utilized, and that you can't get to the README until after you do the
install!

Subject: TSM Operational reporting how?

Hi Gurus
I would like to know about the feature of reporting in TSM
I do have complex scripts generating reports using accounting log (too
tedious) . All i would like to know is the details of new feature TSM
operational reporting. I dont have TEC setup at this moment , but would
like to generate meaningful and most detailed reporting to the management
on utilization/analysis
Is anyone implemented the above tool? Please help me out on know, how to
implement to achive the above.

PERL question for dsmaccnt.log queries ?

2004-03-30 Thread Justin Case
Hi all I am not a PERL programmer so I could use some help with a script
that would query the
TSM accounting log (dsmaccnt.log) to pull out the amount of data backed up
in a 24 hour period (last 24 hours).
If someone could share it with me that would be great. Or if someone knows
of a better method
to compute the daily amount of data backed up by TSM server too..

Thanks

Justin

select entity as Node,sum(bytes)/1024/1024 as MB from summary where

Subject:Define Drive mystery in SCSI library

We added three new Super-DLT drives to our existing Quantum ATL P7000
library - upgrading from five drives to eight. The previous five drives
are OK and working, but TSM (5.1.6.5 on AIX 5.2) cannot see the three
new ones.

The existing 5 drives, named drive0-drive4, have Element Numbers
128-132. The problem is when I do

tsm: ADSMdefine drive atllib drive5 element=133
ANR8366E DEFINE DRIVE: Invalid value for ELEMENT parameter.
 ANS8001I Return code 3.

I'm probably missing something simple here. Here's what I've tried
already.

Restarting the server, and rebooting AIX.

The new drives were visible to AIX as soon as I ran cfgmgr, at the SCSI
addresses expected. I used smit to define them as Tivoli Storage
Manager Devices. Everything went according to expectations, except that
TSM won't recognize the Element Numbers of the new drives. I tried all
possible element numbers in the range, in case the ATL guy miswired
something. Nothing worked in TSM even though AIX seemed very happy about
these new drives. I even tried undefining and redefining one of the
existing drives (and its Path, of course) and that worked OK.

I can't even get far enough to do a define path until I get it to accept
the new element numbers. What obvious, simple thing am I overlooking?

When running dsmfmt on the volumes on Shark disk, the system runs at very
high wait cpu %. at times it will jump over 90% and the system will become
unresponsive for several seconds. When the dsmfmt completes, topas will
still show 5-8mb/sec on the Shark paths for almost another minute. Nothing
is running.

When I do the same formats within TSM (formatsize=x) on the def vol command
the system doesn't seem to push the Shark paths as high and we never see
the
unresponsive times, but still the system sits at 45-50% wait cpu time.

Anyone had strange performance issues using Shark and TSM on pServers?

Almost the same environment that we have currently and the biggest issues
are that when you need to fetch file back to disk
it will use all of the tape drives that are available.
Another issue is that we were on a daily conference call for out system
with DiskXtender2000 running
and when DiskXtender2000 was fetching files we had issues with the CIFS
share becoming unavailable
daily and some days many time having this issue. Not pretty for the user

Our standard policy to retain backups for 30 days. We do that by
setting both VersionsExist and VersionDeleted to NoLimit and DaysExist
and DaysDeleted to 30.

Versions unlimited means we don't take the performance hit of
versioning during the client backup window.

Very easily! The problem is not that you are only backing up 12,222 files,
but unless you are using the Journaling service, TSM has to look at each
one of those 4,000,000+ files to see if it needs to back it up or not. The
10 hours is being spent doing this. We have many clients in this
situation, when we implement the Journaling service, we take this 10 - 12
hour back ups and make them 5 - 10 minutes! I would be concerned with
losing connection though, it could just be that the client is taking so
long to process at its end that it will not talk to the TSM server often
enough. I would try out Journaling and see how that helps.

Does anyone think a computer that has this many files on it, that only
backed up 12,222 files, should take over 10 hours to complete? I'm having a

HSM products - Makes sense to have 40-60% of data already on tape
and not have to restore in a disaster. Currently we are trying
to implement DX2000(I know Legato owns it, politics have pushed
this solution), but backup and overall performance of the box has
crawled while drivers and services are enabled.

I'll address this last item:

HSM works well in the following environment: 1) the client is a large file
server with a high percentage of static, unaccessed files; 2) the tape
library has a fast mount and seek time (the IBM 3575 comes to mind); and 3)
the client has a large *fast* processor.

Disk Xtender 2000 is pretty hard on the processor during the windows you
set
for its activity. I would *never* run it during the production day, and I
would not run it during backup times. I wish that OTG had developed a
TSM-compliant HSM client for Windows, instead of an HSM server.

I wish wish wish that Tivoli would create an HSM client for Windows. I know
it will never happen, because of the robust server functionalities that
Microsoft's server OSs have never had. But one can hope...

You have set it up correctly. TDPO doesn't actually use TSM
versioning to delete old backups. That is done with RMAN scripts
on the client where Oracle resides. Look at your RMAN documentation.
There should be a sample script installed also. Basically you set up
the script to delete data older than x number of days. Deletes this
data from RMAN catalog and TSM server.

! (well, sort of, maybe, depends on which one you want)
If a file changes daily, you only keep 7 versions, so you will have at
most 7 copies...
on day 30 you only have days 23, 24, 25, 26, 27, 28, 29 to restore
from...
days 1-22 have expired due to versions data exists AND say the person
totally deleted the file on day 27, then on day 30 you only have the copies
from day 28 29 to restore from (on day 30).

I've attached my retention.xls spread sheet... now I did my tests long
ago
but things still function this way.

Oh, I just noticed I don't have any reference to my management class

YIKES, that spread sheet was based on my old favorite B7.3_R35.95_A35
