Re: TSM Error Log path:

2007-06-01 Thread Kevin Kinder
You can clean the logs up with these statements in your dsm.opt file

ERRORLOGRETENTION X
SCHEDLOGRETENTION X

where X is the number of days you wish to retain data. If X=7, on Day 8 the
data from Day 1 is pruned

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 6/1/07 10:46 AM >>>
Hi Muruga,

You can change this by specifing the following stanza in your DSM.OPT
file

ERRORLOGNAMEE:\\dsmerror.log

You can do the same for the dsmsched log by adding the stanza
SCHEDLOGNAME.

Met vriendelijke groet, with kind regards,

Richard van Denzel.

Exchange restore to another server

2007-05-25 Thread Kevin Kinder
Environment
Windows 2000 server
Exchange 2000
Exchange TDP
TSM Server on z/OS

Is there any way to restore a Microsoft Exchange backup (done with the
Exchange TDP) to another server while the production server is active
and the mailbox store is up?

Using the GUI, I try to start a restore, but am told that I have to
dismount the mailbox store to continue. As that would take down
Exchange, it's not an option for me.

My goal is simply to get a copy of my existing system onto another
Exchange server. My retention periods are 30 days, and I need to
preserve the system as it looked 30 days ago.

Thanks

Re: Multiple scheduler??

2007-04-10 Thread Kevin Kinder
I have seen this before on NetWare servers where multiple instances of
the scheduler were started. In the NetWare world, it's quite easy to do
that inadvertently when working from the command line.

If the client is NetWare, flip through all the active sessions from the
console scree to make sure you don't have the scheduler loaded more than
once.

Re: Novell DB files skipped from Tivoli Incremental backups

2007-02-28 Thread Kevin Kinder
Tim,

I am using presched and postshced to do this very thing on several servers. I
am in a class right now, but will email you the details on Friday. Basically, I
set up a separate node for the GW backups, then use a pre and post sched to
stop and start GW. I do this around 2:00 am (for minimal disruption). So far,
works like a charm.

Also, the enableGW switch does not work reliably. I worked with that for a
month before giving up - including calls open with both TSM and GW support.

Mark... Thanks again I am also going to look into the preschedulecmd and
postschedcmd
and see if it's possible to shut down the database while the backup is
active.

Moving Data

2007-01-31 Thread Kevin Kinder
I'm struggling through a bit of a blind spot.

My goal is to move all the data belonging to a node from one active tape
storage pool to another. Over time, with deletions and additions, the firs pool
has become populated with much more data than the second, and as a result
migrations are occuring outside their scheduled times.

My environment:
TSM for MVS 5.3.3.0
Running under z/OS v 1.7

I read the manual, and Quick Facts, where I saw this:

*---
Node, move across storage pools

Use 'MOVe Data', specifying a different storage pool; then reassign the node to
the new stgpool's domain. But if a node shares tapes with other nodes:
reassign it to the new stgpool, then let the data expire off of the old stgpool.
*---

The nodes I want to move do share tapes with other nodes, so I figured that the
second option was the way to go. However, that leaves this question: If the
node has files that have existed for a long time and never changed, they would
never expire off the old pool, so I would always be left with some files in the
old pool, correct? How would I move those files without trying to identify them
one by one?

Here's an example:

Trying to move files from NODE1, which is currently owned by the DOMAIN1 Policy
Domain, from STGPOOL1 to STGPOOL2.

The storage pools belong to separate domains (DOMAIN1 and DOMAIN2), both of
which have identical management class settings:

*
How many different versions of the file should be kept?
This number of versions 30

Number of days to keep inactive versions
This number of days 30

Deleted Files
Number of file versions to keep
This number of versions 30

Amount of time to keep the last file version
This number of days 30
*--

Each node has files that haven't changed in more than 30 days, and probably
will never change gain. Those files will never expire, so how do I move those?
Thanks in advance for your assistance.

NetWare Restore Problem

2006-10-31 Thread Kevin Kinder
TSM Server 5.3.3.0 running on z/OS 1.7

Trying to restore to a NetWare server
6.5 Service Pack 5

Netware Client is 5.3.4.0

I have two different nodes backing up data from different directories on this
server.

Nodes are: DOP1 and DOP2

I am trying to restore from the DOP2 node. The options file for this node is
dsmdop2.opt

The command I am issuing is:

dsmc restore data:admdop/* -subdir=yes
-optfile=sys:apps\tivoli\tsm\client\ba\dsmdop2.opt

I get the return error:

TSAFS 6.51.4 291 an invalid path was used
ANS4005E Error processing data:/admdop/blah blah file not found
ANS4005E Error Processing '': file not found

This error message repeats for every file in the directory.

Running the same command with the pick option shows that there are indeed files
available to be restored from this node and directory. I also tried to restore
just one file, with the same result. I tried restoring to a different directory
on the same server, again the same result.

I looked through Richard Sims reference and searched the archives, but I can't
find any fixes for this problem. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

This suggestion may seem ridiculous, but from things I've seen in the
past, it's a thing to examine...

Do a SHOW TIME command in the server, and verify that the big and
little hands are where they should be, and on the right calendar
spot. :-)

Less ridiculous: do Query POlicyset' and look in the Default Mgmt
Class Name column to see what's there, to tie to your previous Query
Backup output, which showed the files bound to the Default management
class - whatever that really happens to be.

2006-04-18 Thread Kevin Kinder
I am obviously having a brain cramp, because I can't figure this out.

I have files on a NetWare client (6.5, SP4) that seem to be retained past the
parameters of thier management classes. One example:

File: Testrehab.xls

Four versions of this file are stored by Tivoli:

Active April 17
Inactive March 17
Inactive March 16
Inactive March 2

However, these are the retention settings:

Versions Data Exists 30
Versions Data Deleted 30
Retain Extra Versions 30
Retain Only Version 30

Shouldn't the inactive files that were backed up on 3/2 and 3/16 be expired?

Re: Novell backup performance

2005-09-12 Thread Kevin Kinder
So, to follow up, should RESOURCEUTILIZATION never be set higher than the
number of NetWare volumes being backed up?

And in the case of a server with a single NetWare volume being backed up, is
there a way to establish multiple backup sessions to improve backup times? I've
traversed the (seemingly) appropriate documentation and only succeeded in
confusing myself. I think I know how to do it in Unix/Linux, but that obviously
doesn't help here.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 9/12/05 2:10:06 PM >>>
The only thing in the dsm.opt that jumps out at me is the
MEMORYEFFICIENTBACKUP. That will definitely slow down backups, and should only
be used if the client being backed up really is memory-deficient. The other
thing is, RESOURCEUTILIZATION tends to have dimishing returns. I've found that
setting to anything more than 4or5 can have negative consequences (especially
if the client is memory-deficient). This is especially true since netware
boxes tend to not have more than 2 or 3 filesystems on a server.

Other reasons could be bad network transfer rate to that server, slow disk
subsystem, and/or slow cpu. If possible, I'd make sure the OS is current on
all patches, all the device drivers have been updated to newest versions, and
double/triple check for network speed/duplex mismatches.

I'd check through the dsmsched.log and look at the end-of-backup summaries.
There's usually some info in there that'll point to either network/disks/cpu.

Re: Client OS Level

Thanks all, for the help. Much appreciated. Now I just have to tell a great
number of my clients that they have to upgrade their file servers!

Client OS Level

2005-08-03 Thread Kevin Kinder
Server is TSM 5.1.7.0

Performing a select on the platform_name and client_os_level fields in the
nodes table yields data, but the digits in the client_os_level field do not
match with the actual version of the operating system.

Is there a chart out there that tells what "NetWare 5.7" or " Win 5.01" equates
to in real life?

I would go look at each client individually, except that

a) the number of clients we have makes that time prohibitive, and

b) believe it or not, I don't have the right to access all of the clients
remotely

If I could believe that every "Win 5.01" equates to Windows 2000, for example,
that would obviously help, but I'm not sure of that either.

Re: Netware backups.. ?

Your DSM.OPT line on the NetWare client would read:

DOMAIN SYS: DATA1:

Backing up your GW files isn't as simple. Third party software like St.
Bernard's Open File Manager appears to work, but it isn't cheap.

In the latest version of Netware, the TSAFS NLM, which replaces TSA500 and
TSA600, has a switch that is supposed to allow TSM to backup open GW files.
However, in my tests, it does not back up the user databases, which is
obviously a problem. I am investigating further with Novell - if you wish,
email me privatley and I will contact you when I find something useful.

Need to save permanent copy of all files currently being stored

2004-12-01 Thread Kevin Kinder
*SMers,

I have been ordered to create a permanent copy of one directory (including all
files and subdirectories that I currently have stored on TSM for a particular
client. These files currently have a 30 day retention, and many of them change
daily, so I have 30 copies of a number of these files.

What is the best way (any way) to move everything on the backed up directory
(both active and inactive files and folders) over to an archive that has no
limits on retention? We currently do not utilize archives, only backups, so
this is my first experience in this area. I've read the client and admin
reference, but I don't see anything that helps me achieve this. Thanks for
your help!

Thanks Daniel. I can update the URL value with no problem, and it reflects the
changes when I run the query. However, even after stopping and restarting the TSM
scheduler (whether on Novell or Windows clients), the tcp_address value does not
change. Any other ideas? Do I need to reboot the client machine?

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 10/8/04 11:03:44 AM >>>
Hi Kevin

The URL is a static value, set by the TSM administrator. TSM doesnt change
this value in the case that the IP-adress of the client changes. Only the
tcpadress changes on a client change.

You can change the URL value by selecting "Updating node", and then "URL".

The tcpadress value will change as soon as you restart the TSM scheduler
service. It will then update the entry with the new value.

Reported IP inconsistency

I am running the following simple query. Environment is TSM 5.1.7.0 MVS.

select -
  nodes.node_name as "Node Name",-
  nodes.tcp_address as "IP Address",-
  concat(concat(concat(concat(varchar(nodes.client_version),'.'), -
  concat(varchar(nodes.client_release),'.')), -
  concat(varchar(nodes.client_level),'.')), -
  concat(varchar(nodes.client_sublevel),'')) as "Client Ver", -
  nodes.url as "URL",-
from nodes -
order by nodes.node_name

The nodes.url field returns the values that have been manually entered for
that node. (These are the correct IP addresses.) However, in some
instances, the value returned from nodes.tcp_address are different. For
example:

Node NameIP Address Client Ver URL

BRIMSERVER2 10.200.80.38 5.2.0.0 http://10.200.19.133:1581
FINSERVER2 10.200.13.4 5.2.0.0 http:10.200.71.100:1581

I believe this problem shows up whenever the client node has had its IP
address changed. The IP address is the original address of the server. It
has since been given a new IP address, but for some reason this field
doesn't change or get updated. It does not appear to affect the backup
process, but I'd like to get this corrected. I can't see how to edit this
field - any ideas? Thanks in advance!

It does not appear to affect the backup process, but I'd like to get this corrected.
I can't see how to edit this field - any ideas? Thanks in advance!

Client backup with two different policy domains

2004-07-29 Thread Kevin Kinder
Tivoli Server MVS 5.1.7.0
NetWare Client 5.2.0.0 on NetWare 5.10 server

On this server, I need to back up one directory (called admbrim) and all of its
subdirectories with seven days' retention. The rest of the directories (across two
volumes) need to have 30 days' retention.

I set up two nodes:

BRIMSERVER2MAIL: For the admbrim directory
BRIMSERVER2: for everything else.

I have two BA directories with separate DSM.opt files. (DSMMAIL.OPT and DSM.OPT)
respectively.

Here are the pertinent differences in the .OPT Files:

DSMMAIL.OPT
—--
*  Setting Nodename
*  ---

   NODENAME brimserver2mail

*  Includes/Excludes
*  -

INCLUDE brim_server2\data:admbrim/*
INCLUDE brim_Server2\data:admbrim
EXCLUDE brim_server2\data:*

DSM.OPT

*  Setting Nodename
*  ---

   NODENAME brimserver2

*  Includes/Excludes
*  -

EXCLUDE brim_server2\*:/.../vol$log.err
EXCLUDE brim_server2*:/.../tts$log.err
EXCLUDE brim_server2*:/.../sys$log.err
EXCLUDE brim_server2*:/.../events.log
EXCLUDE brim_server2*:/.../secaudit.log
EXCLUDE brim_server2*:/.../system.log
EXCLUDE brim_server2\sys:system/cmaster.dba
EXCLUDE brim_server2\sys:system/btrieve.trn
EXCLUDE brim_server2\sys:system/tsa/tsa$temp.*
EXCLUDE brim_server2\sys:_SWAP_.MEM
EXCLUDE.dir brim_server2\sys:\queues
EXCLUDE.DIR brim_server2\data:admbrim

Both nodes are using the same schedule, but with a different policy domain. I used the
-optfile parameter to point each schedule to its correct .OPT file.

This a.m., only one scheduler, for the BRIMSERVER2 node, was running. However, info
in the schedlog for that node appeared to include both nodes. For example:

Re: GroupWise backup

2004-04-01 Thread Kevin Kinder
You don't have to shut down GroupWise to back it up. We back up about 15 GroupWise
servers, and you don't have to do anything to back up user databases, POs. Domains, or
anything.

>>> [EMAIL PROTECTED] 4/1/04 11:20:51 AM >>>

Hi Everybody,

I have a potential customer with Novell GroupWise.

Is there TDP for GroupWise (I guess there isn't; I couldn't find it)
Only solution that I can think of is by using Presched and Postsched commands to stop
and start GroupWise agents.

Is there any other way to backup GroupWise (hot-online backup); I don't like the idea
of shutting down e-mail system in the middle of the night, and than pray that after
postsched command it will wake up again.

Query shows inconsistent results

2003-12-09 Thread Kevin Kinder
Environment: Tivolis Storage Management Server for MVS Version 5.1.7.0

Running the following queries:

QUERY EVENT * * BEGIND=TODAY-1 BEGINT=17:00 -
ENDDATE=TODAY ENDTIME=NOW -
EXCEPTIONSONLY=NO

QUERY SESSION

The query event shows all the nodes that were accessed during the specified timeframe.
The majority were successful backups, but a couple of the nodes show as still in
progress, such as:

Scheduled StartActual StartSchedule Name Node Name
Status

12/08/2003 19:00:00 12/09/2003 02:57:29 NORMAL_DAILY EDARTS1 In Progress

However, query session does not show this node as currently accessing the server. The
only things that query session shows is my administrator access the client via a web
browser:

Sess Comm. SessWait Bytes Bytes Sess PlatformClient Name

-- -- -- -- --- --- -

I'm sure I'm missing something simple, but can't figure out what. TIA!

Guiseppe,

This is the syntax we use on our NetWare clients. We are running TSM 4.1. Remember
that the exclude statements are processed from the bottom up. These statements
exclude most of the system files and logs that don't need to be backed up.I hope
this helps!

I've problem to understand which is the correct sintax to use for exclude directory or
files in Novell platform version 4 or 5 with TSM 4.1 .

Is there anybody that can explain me how to do it?

thank you very much in advance

Re: Include/Exclude

2001-05-22 Thread Kevin Kinder

Mahesh,

I'm not sure if this will help, but we had some problems getting TSM to recognize and
execute out incl/excl statements correctly in the NetWare enivronment. Tivoli tech
suppor recommended that we use full paths in our incl/excl statements. Here's a
sample of the statements we are using on NW 5.x servers:

EXCLUDE servername\*:/.../vol$log.err
EXCLUDE servername*:/.../tts$log.err
EXCLUDE servername*:/.../sys$log.err
EXCLUDE servername*:/.../events.log
EXCLUDE servername*:/.../secaudit.log
EXCLUDE servername*:/.../system.log
EXCLUDE servername*:/.../net$obj.sys
EXCLUDE servername*:/.../net$prop.sys
EXCLUDE servername*:/.../net$val.sys
EXCLUDE servername\sys:system/cmaster.dba
EXCLUDE servername\sys:system/btrieve.trn
EXCLUDE servername\sys:system/tsa/tsa$temp.*
EXCLUDE servername\sys:system/tsa/err$log.*
EXCLUDE servername\sys:system/tsa/skip$log.*
EXCLUDE servername\sys:system/tsa/err$hst.*
EXCLUDE servername\sys:_SWAP_.MEM
exclude.dir servername\sys:\queues

Note the exclude.dir statement - as noted in another reply, this should specifically
remove scanning of the specified dirs and all other dirs.

When we used this format, the odd behavior of these statements in NetWare ceased - at
least from our perspective. Hope that helps.

I had posted this a few days ago, but I am not sure if anyone got it (my
Internet email gateway has not been behaving) . . .

Hello, all!

I have a clarification question about include/exclude statements. One of
our Netware guru's pointed this out to me. Here's what I have (NetWare 5)
in my dsm.opt file:

EXCLUDE *:\...\*.*
INCLUDE DATA:\USERS\...\*.*

When I perform an incremental backup of the node, the system backs up
everything on the system. If on the other had I do the following:

INCLUDE DATA:\USERS\...\*.*
EXCLUDE *:\...\*.*

The system does not backup anything except the files in the
data:\users\...\*.* directories.

It seems the system is doing just the opposite of what it's supposed to
since these statements are supposed to the processed from the bottom
statement up. [See excerpt from Tivoli Storage Manager for NetWare Using
the Backup-Archive Client manual.]

Excerpt:
These options are checked from the bottom of the include-exclude list up,
until a match is found. If a match is found, the processing stops and
checks whether the option is include or exclude. If the option is include,
the file is backed up. If the option is exclude, the file is not backed
up.

Has something changed? Can someone explain this?

TIA

Mahesh

NetWare Client Web Access

2001-05-22 Thread Kevin Kinder

I am trying to get the Web Client to work on a NetWare 5.1 file server.

I have added these statements to my DSM.OPT file:
NWPWFILE YES
passwordaccess generate

I then issued these commands from the command line on the NetWare Client:

dsmc q session
dsmc q tsa
dsmc q tsa nds

After each of these, I supplied the required id and password information, and received
a response that the authentication was valid. Three separate .pwd files were
generated in the same directory as the DSM.OPT file.

When I try to load the dsmcad NLM, I get this notice: Module DSMCAD is not loaded.
Check the TSM error log for more information. The TSM error log contains this one
line:

Error 137 from signon authentication.

I can't find this error documented anywhere, but that's probably because I'm not
looking in the correct place.

I have tried deleting the password files and recreating them, to no avail. The user
ids and passwords I am using are correct, because I am able to do a selective backup
with them. Any ideas? Thanks for any help!

Data on destroyed tapes backed up automatically?

2001-05-16 Thread Kevin Kinder

We are using TSM 4.1.0.

We have several tapes in our sequential access storage pool that have been
accidentally overwritten with data from other applications. If we mark those tapes as
"Destroyed" will the next incremental job backup the files that were on those tapes?

Our guess is that it would, because the database would know what data was on those
tapes.

Thanks for any help anyone can provide.

Re: 5 GB limit on Recovery Log

I am in a TSM class this week, and our instructor says the limit in 4.1 is 5.4 GB.

<<< "Prather, Wanda" <[EMAIL PROTECTED]> 5/16 4:40p >>>
I've lost track - has the 5 GB limit on the size of the recovery log been
lifted in the V4.1 server?

The 5 GB limit is killing me here - it would be a good reason for me to
upgrade
