Re: 3592 drives no compression

No change at all with a new tape deviceclass. I did set the compression to the
drive too.

When I start the backup and do have some data on the tape, it reports that the
estimated capacity is 921 Gb, but after a while it´s 100% full and it´s only
366Gb of data.

Okay - that helps narrow it down.
You indicate that the client options do not specify that the client
should be doing compression. Do some 'dsmc query options' to assure
 that.
Another thing to check is whether the REGister Node that was used for
these clients specified COMPression=Yes - or check the session summary
report from recent backups, for compression indications.

Beyond that, the cause is obscure. I would pursue by defining a
temporary storage pool and mgmt class (for tape isolation) performing
a backup on a very large, ordinary-content file, look at the backup
statistics, then perform a Select on it in the Backups table to look
for comparable size there, to see if there is any compression in the
path to TSM. Outside of TSM, you might take a drive from TSM, mount a
spare 3592 tape via your OS and have a program write ordinary data to
it until EOT was reached, where it would report its progress, and you
 could then assess compression.

well, that is odd either all of the data on the tapes must be
compressed by the client or be incompressible, like multi-media data.

I can't think of any other logical explanation.

You didn't specify whether these were 3592 generation 1 or 2 drives.
If gen 1, the 3592C you have set is the correct devclass specification.

I would check that your tape device driver is the correct type, and is
a recent vintage, to avoid any vagaries in passing device commands
from TSM to the drives. Defects in drivers are not unknown. Likewise
for tape drive microcode/firmware.

See if you can find a utility to inspect the drive settings, to verify
what they are. In AIX, the lsattr command can be used to verify if
compression is in effect; I don't know what might be used in Windows.

You can change the default from drive to ultrium 4c for forced compression.
This will only help if you data is not already compressed (being compressed

Hi,

Its on you device class definitions.

 Device Class Name: LTO_PRIM
   Device Type: LTO
Format: DRIVE

You can change the default from drive to ultrium 4c for forced compression.
This will only help if you data is not already compressed (being compressed
data by nature like .jpg/zip etc or due to host based compression).

We encountered the same problem - the solution is here:
http://www-01.ibm.com/support/docview.wss?uid=swg21380467

The OR service is a process called tsmreptsvc.exe. The action of running a
report creates another process - tsmrept.exe. We found that if this
process doesn't exist then you can disregard the Working... message - it
will never return any results.

Disabling UAC as per the above technote will enable the process to be
created successfully.

Working. This may take several minutes to complete.

I have let it be there for more than 12 hours and it won´t complete. Nothing in
the activity log, and nothing in the OS log. If I do a report with my own SQL
select statement it works when I press test, but if I try and run the report it
will be stuck for ever and never finish.

Thanks for the additional info on that vaulted volume.
With an Access state of Offsite, the Move Data should operate on local
primary pool volumes containing the same data. Whereas that didn't
happen, it calls into question the state of the online volumes or
whether the TSM database contains entries for any files on that
offsite volume. I'd start by performing a Query CONtent on that
volume, and then add DAmaged=Yes, to see if something strange going on
there: it's not impossible that the volume % utilization suggests data
on the tape but, due to problems, the database has no info for any
files on the tape. For completeness, perform queries on the storage
pools themselves, to assure no odd state. If a repeat of the Move
Data produces the same non-results, attempt on similar volumes to see
if there is a more widespread issue, and see if any further Activity
Log messages are produced to lend clues. Hopefully, the library is
not now returning bizarre indications to the TSM server for volumes in
certain locations in the library. You might want to review the TSM
Activity Log at restart time, when it would have tested the inventory
of the library.

When posting a question like this, you need to include evidence of the

Keep in mind that if a Move Data or the like had been done before on
an Offsite volume, the volume should shift to Pending state.

Change library and server

2009-01-29 Thread Lars-Erik Öhman
Is there a paper somewhere that could tell me the best way to move from one
server and library to a new server and library?

Current configuration:

Windows 2003 x32
TSM 5.5.1.1
Library IBM 3584 with 3592 drives

New configuration:

Windows 2008 x64
Library IBM 3584 with LTO4 drives

We are changing location and want to move it all over the WAN. The speed of the
WAN wont be an issue at all.

This is what I´m thinking how to do it.

Connect the new library to the old server (FC) and backup all the data to the
new library. Install the new server and when all the data is in the new library
copy dbvol, logvol and storagepool volumes to the new server. Then connect the
new library to the new W2K8 server and correct all the devices to match the new
server. Right?

If encryption is involved, this may be the situation described in Technote
1281972.

More likely, I would suspect that the client attempting the restoral is not the
one which performed the backup, and that the backup client was at a higher
level, as summarized in APAR IC53549. The dsmerror.log may contain more
detail. Restoring at lower levels is always iffy, as data structures may have
changed over time.

If encryption is involved, this may be the situation described in
Technote 1281972.

More likely, I would suspect that the client attempting the restoral is
not the one which performed the backup, and that the backup client was
at a higher level, as summarized in APAR IC53549. The dsmerror.log may
contain more detail. Restoring at lower levels is always iffy, as data
structures may have changed over time.

Re: anyone currently using or evaluating TSM FastBack

2008-12-01 Thread Lars-Erik Öhman
Do you use TSM Fastback with Windows 2008 and Exchange 2007? Are you able to
restore public folders with this client?

With TDP for Exchange I'm not able to do it, and we will need it for awhile
before we can leave public folders behind.

Can you restore the data to another server in some way?

Yep, I am running it as a second backup tool next to Tivoli for Demo's
(of Fastback) and to get the data outside every night without having to
be or pass by the office.

It's a nice product, it does what it say's it does, the interface could
use some tuning, some icons are really small and the tiniest differences
inside of these icons can indicate certain error states or activities
that are currently runninga little fiddly but that all.

It's really simple to get going and configure, within minutes it's all
done, the client is just a dream to configure, all you do is point it to
the server and that's it! :)

All configuration is done on the server but even that is very limited,
you can't exclude data, you either backup the partition/disk or you
don't, the policies are extremely simplistic but are all you need for
what the product does.

It just works, makes me wonder why all software can't be this simple and
just work.

Exchange single item restore support runs thru Outlook, that's a little
odd at first but it works nicely and IBM has made that interface better
it seems going from 5.5.0.0 to 5.5.1.0.

I am pleased with the product except for one issue...we need Windows
2008 support and we need it fast! :)

Any questions about fastback, just post it here, I will try to answer
them as good as I can.

 Stefan

There's no evaluation provided. List is USD1030.90 for 10 PVU of the
basic product with exchange brick-level and bare-metal. It's the former
FilesX product.
We're torn between implementing it and waiting for the native
brick-level exchange restores in TSM 6.
Every Thursday this month at 15:30 UTC there's a demo. I understand
this to be publically-available information, so I'll drop the

causes a big flood and they have to limit participants, I imagine they
might archive a demo and/or put on more of them.

Hello all,

Is anyone currently using or evaluating TSM FastBack? Was this an
in-house (IBM) software or was it bought and adapted for TSM use -
kind of like the AvePoint software for MS SharePoint? I hadn't heard of
it before, but figured someone out there may have gotten their fingers
into it.

Adding users with client access rights

TSM 5.4.1.1

I´m trying to add users so they can do restores and only restores using the web
client, but I can´t find where to give the users the Client access rights
with the new and nice web GUI. If I logon with the good old web GUI I can give
them the authority level Client access.

Just thinking for the future when I´m not able to use the old web GUI anymore.

For newer tape technologies, the information is on the chip in each
tape. If only TSM would retrieve that info.

(Sounds like an opportunity for an inventive code writer.)

This was done by one of our List members about a year ago, as a tapeutil mod,
made available for download at http://www.mesa.nl .

Tape TTL

2006-10-18 Thread Lars-Erik Öhman

Have been looking for any recommendations about how long I could use a tape
before it´s necessary to change them to new ones. I know that it´s up to how
much a tape have been used, mounted, read, written and whatever. Or is it ok to
use a tape until it failures?

Below is details about 2 of my tapes, where 51 is more typical of the most
of my tapes, and 07 is very rare in my library. How come that the most of
my tapes are only mounted between 5 and 20 times since 1,5 years back? I do
backup between 450 and 600 Gb a night.

Thanks for any recommendations or thoughts around this matter.

Hi Larsa,

Another way to update the session timeout setting is to manually update the
value in the server.xml file. Search for invalidationTimeout and set it to
invalidationTimeout=-1. A value of -1 means to never time out.

The server.xml file is found here:

wont change. Running SupportUtil.bat, logging in, pressing 5 and try to
change the time to 600 minutes at least, so it will be logged on during

This tape was made when we upgraded last time, about a year ago if I remember it
right. So it was only made for that purpose!

Hi

According to the information you have supplied, it looks like this is the only
database backup that you have. Is this correct?

There can be multiple reasons to why you cannot delete a database backup volume from
the volume history:

1. The database is the last database backup that you have(including
incrementals)

2. The database is the last database within the specific device class. TSM will not
allow you to delete the last database backup, despite the fact that you might have
other database backups bound to other device classes.

3580 drive unknown

2002-11-08 Thread Lars-Erik Öhman
I have a newly installed TSM v5.1.1.6 on W2K and library IBM 3583 where 2 of
the drives are in state unknown. I´m not sure if it has been like this from
the beginning, but does anybody know how I can get them working again? The 2
drives are on a separate Adaptec 29160, and the library and working drive on
another Adaptec 29160. An update won´t do it, and W2K think that the drives
works okey! I have deleted them and defined them again. I have changed SCSI
cables to!!

How is the 3583 connected to the host? Through SCSI or FC?

Have you considered upgrading to version 5.0.2.4?

Is Removable Media Manager loaded on the W2K host? According to the device
list, you are not using the TSM device driver. Normally, the TSM device
driver is more stable than using the Windows driver (\\tapeX shows that
Windows is controlling the drives).

Strange that nothing happens. Is there anything in the event log? It
doesn't necessarely have to do with TSM...

How does the library device look? Anything like lbX.X.X.X?

Hi

Which version of Atape are you using?

Have you any write/read errors on your tapes, and if so, is it the same
tapes that has these errors?

Also, a good idea would to look at the activity log to see what happens
before the errors begin. If the same thing happens every wednesday at 12,
it's easier to solve your problem.

LB6 LB6DR1 LTO Unavailable

This is what I get in the eventlogg on the server:

The driver detected a controller error on \Device\Tape1.

After I have restarted the server everything works alright for one week
until the next wednesday at 12:00. I don´t have any schedules starting at
this time in TSM or on the server. It´s not the same drive that gets
unavailable every time. Any one who has a clue whats wrong?

Thanks in advance.

Re: Loosing drive in IBM3583

The driver is LTO 3580 with windows driver version 5.0.1.11. There are no
errors on my tapes. Nothing happens in the activity log before this. A
backup job starts at 11.00 and it copies a tape from a pool to a copypool.
All schedules are the same every day.

Best Regards
