TSM Database space usage per backup and archive file

2012-10-01 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone!

I have a TSM 5.5.5.0 server and I was wondering how much space a backup file
and an archive file utilize of a TSM database?

Thanks in advance!

Joni

Hi Joni

I have seen these many times, but there are always some accompanying messages
with these. Try a 'q actlog s=23348' (the process number) from when the process
started. What is that showing?

IIRC there are some NDMP bugs in your TSM server level, apply hot fixes or
upgrade before continuing.

Select statement to find data archived total

2012-03-15 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

I was asked to find how much space would be saved if there were no data
retentions for archived data for more than 3 years. I currently have archive
management classes that go as high as 14 years. Is there a way to figure out
how much space is utilized per client that has data archived either per
management class or by file? When I did a select * from archives where
node_name='TEST' it shows me all of the files and the management class name,
but it doesn't show me the file size which is also what I'd need.

 NODE_NAME: TEST
FILESPACE_NAME: /export/home
  FILESPACE_ID: 22

 OWNER: lidqips
   DESCRIPTION: archive.sh 0202060935

Any thoughts? Thanks!

When formulating your queries, please keep this in mind...

From the Data Protect for Domino User's Guide...

A single database backup is stored as two objects on the
Tivoli Storage Manager server. The objects created are the
relative database name and the relative database name
plus a .DATA extension. For example, a backup of
database mail6\user1.nsf would result in the following two objects:

   1. The relative name of the database:

  mail6\user1.nsf

   2. The relative name of the database plus .DATA:

  mail6\user1.nsf.DATA

You could, if you really want a SQL query, run the following SQL on
a regular basis and dump the output to a file, which will give you a
listing on the day of the tapes for that criteria:

SELECT VOLUME_NAME from contents where object_id in (SELECT
object_id FROM backups WHERE node_name LIKE 'LNBRTZM3%5YR' AND
 ll_name LIKE 'training%.nsf')

If that wildcard is supposed to be just one character replace % with
_ , but I took * in your question to mean 'one or more of any
character'. Pedantic, but please ignore my own spelling and typos.

However, the query will probably take an age to run and you'll need
to keep a close eye on the server in case of log pinning etc. I'd
 advise against it if possible.

Note that, as previously noted, a query like this will only give you
a current snapshot - you seem to be asking which tapes the data was
on between some dates in the past - I don't know how to do that.
You could tell the auditors to advise you what data to collect for
them to query you on at a later date...maybe you need to pull a
complete TSM database backup out of the cycle and pop it on a shelf
on a regular basis to keep them happy.

DISCLAIMER - I've not tested that query, it might have errors I've
 not spotted.

I agree with Thom, the data gets spread everywhere and moved often by

Sorry... I am not a SQL expert. I will let one of the other

 Thanks Del!

If I were looking for lidb88n.nsf files from the server
LNBRTZM315YR, then would the syntax be as follows? I'm trying to
find all backup objects during the time period below? Thanks again!

select * from backups where node_name='LNBRTZM315YR' and backup_date
 between '06/30/2008' and '02/01/2009' and ll_name='/mail/lidb88n.nsf.*'?

Help! Select statement syntax for legal reasons

2012-02-09 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

I have a situation where someone wants to know what tapes particular people's
backup data is on for our TDP for Mail backups for the time period from 7/08 -
1/09. The TSM client names are LNBRTZM3*5YR and the mail filesystem location
is: mailx and the .nsf file names we are looking for are the training*.nsf and
we need to know what tapes the data is on.

LNBRTZM335YR, mail1\training.nsf

LNBRTZM355YR, mail2\training2.nsf

Does anyone know what the syntax of this select statement would be to find this
information? Any help is greatly appreciated as I was told I need this
information by EOD and I'm not quite sure how to gather this from the TSM
server side. My TSM server is on AIX and is at 5.5.5.0.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks in advance!

Joni

TSM files on tape are more or less routinely moved to other volumes
by reclamation processing. As far as I can tell, there are three
possible ways of dealing with this possibility: suppress reclamation
of the volumes involved, send updates to the lawyers when and if
files are move to other volumes, or respond in bad faith by implying
that today's information will remain valid indefinitely.

Does anyone know what I should look at to determine the root cause of this

How to determine what date a file was deleted from a client

2012-01-05 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hello everyone,

I was just wondering how I can determine when a file was deleted off of a
particular client and then becomes eligible for deletion from within TSM? For
example, if I have server ALPHA that has directory /p01/data/cmw and a file was
deleted from within this directory 10 days ago and it will delete from tsm in
80 additional days with the parameter version data deleted 90 within the
management class, is there any place that I can see from either the client or
the tsm server concerning when it will be purged from the TSM server?

Just let me know. Thanks!

It would help if you supplied us with what kind of drives you are using. The
drives should always be visible in the /proc/scsi/scsi file if they are
physically visible to the machine. If they arent configured in linux, there
could be a number of reasons, the most common is a lack of drivers.

Re: Label volumes in a scsi library?

2011-10-13 Thread Moyer, Joni M
 present, barcode value ,
devT=ANY, mediaT=-1, elemT=ANY

slot element range 4096 - 4197

I'm not sure how I'd use the drive mapping utility since they aren't attached
to my TSM server... or is that still possible?

Sorry for all of the questions, but I've never used a scsi library before so
this is all new to me. I'm a little confused as we had more drives added to
this configuration, but it's only showing 5. Maybe I need to recycle the TSM
application to make it recognize the changes?

Thanks again for any suggestions/help!

Joni,
It doesn't look like your drives/paths are defined correctly. The library is
trying to move the volume from a slot 4096 to slot-element 65535.
In my experience, when I see slot element 65535, it usually points to either
the drives, paths to drives not being defined correctly.

A couple of questions:

1) what's the OS?
2)what do your drives / paths to drives look like
3)what does the output of a show slot look like, at least for the drives
4)have you tried the IBM tape diagnostic tool to identify the correct
element numbers for your drives / mt mapping?

Backing up Exchange 2010

2011-08-25 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

We will soon be implementing Exchange 2010 servers and I was wondering if there
are any redbooks or manuals that go through the new backup method for this OS?
I currently use TDP for Mail for my Exchange 2007 servers, but I have been told
that it has changed with Exchange 2010.

Any help is greatly appreciated!

Thanks!

Volumes not managed by DRM, but should be

2011-08-02 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

I have a TSM 5.5.5.0 AIX server and I have found 11 tapes that are copy pool
tapes that should be managed by DRM but do not appear to be.

For example, T02659 is as follows:

   Volume Name: T02659
 Storage Pool Name: COPY_SHAREPOINT
Device Class Name: LTO2_OFFSITE
Estimated Capacity: 276.4 G
   Scaled Capacity Applied:
  Pct Util: 17.8
 Volume Status: Full
Access: Read/Write
Pct. Reclaimable Space: 82.2
   Scratch Volume?: Yes
   In Error State?: No
  Number of Writable Sides: 1
   Number of Times Mounted: 130
 Write Pass Number: 1
Approx. Date Last Written: 01/03/11 04:34:48
Approx. Date Last Read: 09/12/10 02:04:41
   Date Became Pending:
Number of Write Errors: 0
 Number of Read Errors: 0
   Volume Location:
Volume is MVS Lanfree Capable : No
Last Update by (administrator):
 Last Update Date/Time: 09/12/10 02:03:30

When I do a q drm T02659 I get the following results: ANR2034E QUERY DRMEDIA:
No match found using this criteria.

Does anyone know how I can resolve this issue?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Everyone!

I am using the dsmadmc command to do: q drm * against an AIX 5.5.5.0 TSM server

could be causing this to occur? Or what I can look into to determine the root

Just let me know.

Hi Joni,

The TSM Server Administrator's Reference has an appendex on the return
codes, so you check there for the meaning of the 14.

Off-hand I'm not sure what would cause this, can you post complete output
showing the command as well as the messages you are seeing? I would
normally expect at least one other message to go with that ANS8001I, and
that other message probably provides the clue.

Hi Everyone,

I am trying to do an NDMP backup with device c64t0l0 from a TSM 5.5.5.0 server

Any suggestions on what this issue might be? I'm at a loss and have tried

Hi Andy,

Yeah, the device is actually the c64t0l0 and it's been that way for years, so
that part hasn't changed, but thanks so much for the tip!

Do you have the correct rmt path to the drive? If there are 2 drives and the
rmt's are reversed it will give the error you have.

For us we have /dev/rmt43 for AIX and c80t0l0 for the NAS in the path
definitions to 1 drive.

U can restore the files in another directory and compare the permissions.

NAS NDMP TOC will not write

Any suggestions?

Joni, Allen,

A lack of available temporary space in the TSM server database could
account for no TOC being created. But indeed, if the TOC cannot be created
then TSM should issue some kind of message. If nothing in the activity log
hints at the issue, then the only thing I can suggest would be to open a
PMR so it can be further investigated.

It might be worth trying a backup with TOC=YES to see if it forces an error
message to be generated (other than the backup fails).

Hi Joni,

I was struggling with the same error message after upgrading our Quantum i2k
tape libraries to i6k and opened a PMR at IBM. After some investigation it
turned out to be a bug, the APAR IC73776 is opened for it but not yet solved.

The easy workaround is just to NOT specify the serial number in the 'define
library' command, the serial number will be picked automatically by TSM. You
can verify this afterwards with the command 'show library LIDZR8V'.

best regards,
Kurt

Out of curiosity, is the file system JFS or JFS2? The former employs the old

2010-10-19 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

How can I verify that a particular management class is being used, in this
case: mcnlv365d, on a particular AIX TSM client at version 5.5.2.0 for
filesystem: /usr/grok/lun08? The full path of the data is:
/usr/grok/lun08/23184/ and they're looking for all files that are: 810452492.*.

Can anyone tell me how to verify that that management class is bound to those
particular files from the AIX TSM client? And is there also a way to verify
this from the TSM server?

Any help is appreciated! Thanks!

Opinion on disk layout for db, log storagepools

2010-09-27 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

I am in the process of acquiring new disk which means that I will be able to
layout the storage for the database, log and storage pools in a more efficient
manner. I was told by IBM that a filesystem should contain no more than 2-3
volumes and there should be a 1 to 1 ratio of physical disk volumes to TSM
volumes.

I was thinking about doing the following but I was wondering if there is a
known limit to the size of a volume that should be used for the database or
storage pools? And should I have more storagepool volumes created per
storagepool?

Any suggestions/opinions are greatly appreciated

3 filesystems that are 50 GB each with 1 physical 50 GB LUN with 2 TSM database
volume per filesystem:

Filesystem VolumeSize (GB)
/tsmdev/db1 dbvol1 25
  dbvol2 25
/tsmdev/db2 dbvol3 25
  dbvol4 25
/tsmdev/db3 dbvol5 25
  dbvol6 25

For my log volumes I'm just going to create 1 filesystem with 1- 15 GB lun and
then create 3- 4 GB log volumes from it:

Filesystem Volume Size (GB)
/tsmdev/logfs logvol1 4
  logvol2 4
  logvol3 4

Storage pools:

Filesystem VolumeSize
(GB)
/tsmdev/stgpool1 vol150
Represents AIX storagepool
Vol2 50
Represents Sharepoint storagepool
/tsmdev/stgpool2 vol3250
   Represents vol1 of Linux storagepool
Vol4 250
   Represents vol2 of Linux storagepool
/tsmdev/stgpool3 vol5250
   Represents vol1 of Oracle storagepool
Vol6 250
   Represents vol2 of Oracle storagepool
/tsmdev/stgpool4 vol7125
   Represents Lotus Notes storagepool
Vol8 125
   Represents Solaris storagepool
/tsmdev/stgpool5 vol9200

Vol11 200

I thought it was available because support told me to upgrade a windows 2008

Why do you think it is out/available?

ANR8485E: No drives available, can't find root cause

2010-06-30 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

I seem to be getting an ANR8485E message sporadically while doing NAS NDMP
backups for 1 particular datamover. It has 3 drives attached to it which are
also shared with another datamover. All 3 drives in question are online and
the paths are online as well. No checkin or label jobs were being done at this
point in time either.

Any other suggestions? I would've thought that if 2 datamovers request a tape
mount and the drive is not yet available that it will wait until a drive
becomes available.

If anyone has any suggestions just let me know. Thanks

Select statement to only list backups with particular event status

Hello everyone,

I am trying to create a select statement that will list all backups for clients

at the current date/time that had a status of: Missed, In Progress, Fail%,
Started.

I tried the below select statement but it is not giving me everything that I am
looking for and it's also reporting future events which I don't want. Can
anyone tell me what I'm doing wrong?

Thanks in advance!

select event as Event,date(actual_start) as Date,time(actual_start) as

Hi Richard,

Is there any other way to do a report that would list missed, failed, in
progress and started backups then on a daily basis running it from the prior
day at 6PM until the current time the script is run at 9AM? I currently run q
event at 9AM which catches the missed failed backups, but nothing that
currently accounts for anything that is in progress or has been started.

The EVENTS table has been an oddball in TSM, as I note in ADSM QuickFacts,
because of the way it was engineered. Using relative timestamp references
traditionally doesn't work, so you need to employ an absolute timestamp, as in
 select * from events WHERE SCHEDULED_START = '2010-06-28'

Note also that there is no actual_time column in instances of the EVENTS table
that I know of. Use the following to verify column names:
select * from syscat.columns where tabname='EVENTS'
I haven't seen 'In Progress' as one of the possible status values; but things
change over numerous releases.

The only way to see status=Started jobs is if you perform a query while
they are under way: if you really wanted that, a cron job capture would
take care of it. Running a query after all scheduled backups have
finished will report final status of Completed (or Missed or Failed),
which is probably what you get at 09:00. And, of course, the Events
table does not contain information for backups which are independently
performed on the client.

Such event information is superficial, of course... The client
administrator should be reviewing backup logs (and the dsmerror.log!)
for anomalies which may be delaying backups (e.g., retries) or be
causing individual files or whole file systems to not get backed up (as
in a Domain omission or forgotten, old Exclude).

Syntax to add an option to a client schedule

2010-02-11 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

I was wondering if it is possible to add another option to this archive
schedule? The customer would like to have -snapshotproviderfs=NONE added.
Would the below need to be added as:

'-deletefiles -snapshotproviderfs=NONE'

And is this even possible? I looked up the command and it says the following,
so is this even possible from a TSM server client schedule?

Reclamation for offsite storage pools

2010-01-27 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hello everyone,

For several years I had not been able to run reclamation on one of my tsm
servers due to the lack of physical tape drives to accomplish the task. I am
in the process of trying to get caught up, but it seems that I just never do.
Most of my issue is with the copy storage pool volumes which are very
under-utilized. It seems like reclamation, even if I start multiple
reclamation threads, is taking quite a long time.

Is there some other way for me to get the data onto new media without doing
reclamation? Can I do a move data from 1 copy storage pool volume to the
another volume within the same copy storage pool? I know that this would mean
bringing the tapes back from the vault, but it is just not progressing as I
would like with the reclamation processes.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated as I would like to get this back under
control.

Thank you in advance!

Re: Reclamation for offsite storage pools

2010-01-27 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi George,

I am using collocation for my onsite primary storage pools, but not my offsite
copy storage pools. I think this is just a build up of not being able to run
reclamation for about 2 years and I just never seem to be able to get caught up
so in turn I'm using a lot of tapes offsite and it's just not necessary.

I was hoping running reclamation with more processes per offsite storage pool
as well as running it more frequently would help, but so far it is not.

Thanks!

Hi George,

Doesn't reclamation for offsite copy storage pool volumes write the data to new
copy storage pool volumes from the primary copy? I guess I'm trying to come up
with a more efficient method of getting caught up as reclamation just isn't
accomplishing what I hope it would.

Thanks again!

This is not true,Can I do a move data from 1 copy storage pool volume
to the another volume within the same copy storage pool?
That is what reclamation does for you without you specifying individual
volumes. You use a reclamation threshold in a command or a storage pool
threshold and TSM picks the volumes. With a MOVE DATA on a copy pool
volume, TSM just grabs the data from the primary pool.

You can let reclamations/move data/move nodedata run through
housekeeping if needed. Ordinarily it isn't the best thing to do, but
it shouldn't break anything.

This will reclaim 4 volumes and TSM seems to pick the four at or above the 50%

No. That reclaim process would process a maximum of tapes (if there are that

You would have to repeat the command to do the next four.

Move data from copystgpool volumes to a new copystgpool

2010-01-14 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hello everyone,

I will be changing from LTO2 media to LTO4 media in the near future and I would
like to get the already existing LTO2 offsite copy storage pool volumes moved
to new LTO4 media. How would I go about doing this? Thanks in advance!

Encryption

2010-01-12 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hello everyone,

I am beginning the process of deciding upon a method of encryption. I was just
wondering if anyone utilizes TSM to encrypt data? It seems to be quite a
cumbersome method of encryption...

I was also wondering if anyone was using hardware encryption in their
environments? And what type of set up do you have?

Thanks in advance

Admin privileges just to update tape paths

2009-10-13 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

I've been looking at the privilege classes for administrators and I cannot
figure out which one would handle the ability to update tape paths? I am
looking for something that gives them the least power on TSM, but will still
allow them to update the drive paths.

Any suggestions? Analyst? Operator?

Thanks in advance!

Calculate total data backed up on tape

2009-09-18 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

Would anyone know how to calculate the total amount of data that is stored on
physical tape? All of my physical tapes begin with a T* so I'm thinking this
would be easy, but I have not found the correct syntax that works yet. Any
ideas? Thanks in advance!

disablenqr option

2009-08-13 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi everyone,

I found the following statement in an options file and was wondering if it was
even valid any longer. It was in a Windows 2003 client that has a TSM 5.5.0.0
client.

TESTFLAG DISABLENQR

I know that for the current Windows TSM 5.5 client it appears that you would
have to have disablenqr no, which is the default anyway in the options file, so
with the above syntax would it just not implement anything?

Just let me know. Thanks!

Proper way to backup Windows 2008 System State

2009-07-30 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

I'm trying to get a good idea of the proper way to backup a Windows 2008
server's system state with the TSM client. The TSM client is version 5.5.1.0.
What statements need to be put into the dsm.opt file? Or is this supposed to
be a separate process from the regular differential backups of all drives on
the server?

Any examples or help is appreciated! Thanks!

Del volh

2009-07-20 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

I would like to clean up the volume history, but I do not want to cause issues
with tapes that are managed by DRM. In looking at the command what it can
accomplish I would probably like to get rid of all old volume information for
new, reused deleted volumes from years ago.

del volhist todate=01/01/2007 type=stgnew,stgreuse,stgdelete

Would running this del volhist command have any negative impact on volumes
managed by DRM that are still in storage groups and have a long retention
period?

How often do most of you run this command and what do you typically purge from
the volume history?

Thanks in advance!

Hi Shawn,

You are probably right about the syntax. I didn't see anything indicating you
could place commas between the types. Do you use DRM in your environment?

Thanks again!

Thanks Shawn!

I cleaned up the volume history. I think I was just a little hesitant because
of the warning it gives you in the explanation of delete volhist when you use
DRM, but what you said makes sense! Thanks again!

Yes, we use DRM, however we have since moved to using a remote VTL for the
DB Backups.
Ever since then, we've also added del volh todate=-7 t=dbb since we
don't manage those volumes with DRM.

If you are worried about losing track of tapes that become scratch or
Vault Retreive while they are offsite, that won't be a problem. TSM
doesn't actually remove them from the Copy storage pool until they are
returned and you run the move drm tostat=onsiteret

TDP FOR DOMINO ISSUE: ACD5130E Could not initialize the connection to Lotus Domino properly. error=259

2009-05-08 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

Has anyone seen this type of error before? I can't figure out what error=259
is telling me. The environment is as follows:

TSM SERVER - AIX 5.5 - TSM 5.5.1.1

TDP for Domino - z/Linux - TSM 5.3.2.0 ( we're down level because we are
shutting down Lotus Notes)

It appears to be a communication issue to the Lotus Domino piece on this host,
but is there anything I can do to resolve this? I am not familiar with the
Lotus Notes application therefore I'm at a loss as to how to resolve.

Any suggestions are greatly appreciated

Help with select statement

2009-05-06 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hey Everyone,

I've been trying to get the proper output of archived data for a particular
node, but I keep getting hung up on the archive_date parameter and was
wondering if anyone could help out?

I am trying to get information on all archived data for the following:

node_name=fjsu101
owner=appb2b
filespace_id=11
Between the dates of 05/01/2009 05/02/2009

I was trying: select * from archives where node_name='FJSU101' and
owner='appb2b' and filespace_id=11 and date(archive_date)  04/31/2009 as a
starting point, but I'm still having no luck. Any suggestions are greatly
appreciated

How to produce a usable script?

2009-02-25 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

I have a script that I have created that provides me with a particular listing
of backup tapes:

select volume_name from volumes where stgpool_name like 'TAPE_NDMP%_OFFSITE'
order by volume_name

I would then like to take the results of this script and create another script
that could be run if needed so that it looks like the following:

upd vol xx acc=readonly

Does anyone know how I could do this?

Thanks in advance

Re: How to produce a usable script?

2009-02-25 Thread Moyer, Joni M
Hi Everyone,

I ran this script and it's not outputing it as I would like. It's actually
putting everything in columns as you see below:

Unnamed[1] VOLUME_NAMEUnnamed[3]
-- -- --
upd volN00028 acc=readonly
upd volN00098 acc=readonly

Is there any way to have everything output without this type of output and
just have the commands?

Thanks again!

Don't forget the spaces.. you need an ending space on UPD VOL and a
beginning for ACC=READONLY or it will all be lumped together.

select 'upd vol ', volume_name, ' acc=readonly' from volumes where
stgpool_name like 'TAPE_NDMP%_OFFSITE'

You also might need to run SET SQLDISPLAYMODE WIDE or the column will wrap
on the display.
