Protecting the V6 Reporting and Monitoring Server
Hi All, For anyone who has installed the V6 Reporting and Monitoring server, how are you backing up the DB2 Tivoli Data Warehouse that is on this server? Does this DB2 database need to be stopped, copied over, then restarted, then backed up from the copy? If so, could you direct me to any documentation or a script for doing this? I have installed my V6 Reporting and Monitoring server on a VMWare Windows 2003 guest, then installed the TSM client. Thanks for any help with this! Nancy Brizuela University of Wyoming
TSM V6.1.3.1 and memory requirements on series
Hi All, I'm wondering if anyone is running TSM V6.1.3.1 on an IBM server similar to a p5 p570? I definitely need more memory for V6, since I only have 8GB and the documentation says the minimum memory for all but the tiniest server should be 12 GB, 16 GB if using deduplication. I'm considering installing about 32 - 40 GB total memory. We back up about 5 TB per night and have 207 client nodes, one server instance. I'd like to know about any real-world experiences with similar configurations and how much memory your server(s) have and is it adequate? Also, our p5 p570 has two two-way 1.9 GHz processor cards. Do you have an opinion on whether I should add to or upgrade controller cards while I'm at it? Thanks! Nancy Brizuela, CPA Systems Programmer, Senior University of Wyoming IBM/Unix Systems Group

Yes, been there, done that. My boss is looking to consolidate all our servers on one or two platforms, i.e. all Sun and VMware virtual servers, for a less expensive disaster recovery plan. We currently run our TSM server on a pSeries LPAR. -Original Message- From: ADSM: Dist Stor Manager [mailto:ads...@vm.marist.edu] On Behalf Of Roger Deschner Sent: Monday, March 02, 2009 11:23 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: Servers supported on virtual machines--anything new? . One reason you won't find much about this, is that TSM makes it very easy to run more than one TSM server instance on a single OS image. This will be inherently more efficient than virtualization via VMware, Sun LDOM, IBM z/VM, or IBM pSeries LPAR. Instructions are in the TSM Installation Guide and Administrators Guide. IBM p 520 vs. p 570
Hi All, We are thinking of replacing our IBM p 570 with a p 520. This server would be used exclusively for TSM backups. We back up about 1.5 TB every night. We have two tape libraries, one about 50 miles from here and one locally, where we send all the backup data (about 66 TB total). We have 8 tape drives locally and 5 tape drives at the remote library. Our database and storage pools are on our SAN. What do folks think about the p 570 performance vs. the p 520--better or worse? Has anyone made this same switch or is anyone using a p 520? Managed TSM server with different O/S
Wanda or All, Is it possible to manage a TSM configuration where a Configuration Manager is, say AIX, and the Managed Server is, say Z/OS? Or is it possible to convert a database, used on an AIX server so that it could be used on a Z/OS server? If so, is anyone doing this, especially for a disaster recovery situation? Thanks! Re: Managed TSM server with different O/S
Thank you, Paul. Yes, that would be a nice feature to have. It could save us a lot of money for disaster recovery. We are partners with a remote site that uses TSM on Z/os; we are now using TSM on AIX. It would be nice if we could rent an LPAR on their server for a TSM disaster recovery server. As it is, we'll need to buy a smaller AIX server for this purpose. -Original Message- From: Paul Zarnowski [mailto:[EMAIL PROTECTED] Sent: Tuesday, February 19, 2008 3:25 PM To: ADSM-L@VM.MARIST.EDU Subject: Re: Managed TSM server with different O/S At 03:40 PM 2/19/2008, Nancy R. If you (or others) want to be able to move a TSM database from one platform to another (and point at the same tape media) let IBM know this. I suspect there are more and more sites who could use this (and we are one of them). IBM prioritizes development efforts based on their perception of which new features are in highest demand by their customers (and potential customers). There are two parts to this problem: 1. Moving the database to a new platform 2. Being able to read media created on the old platform from the new platform (at least transitionally, if not long-term) ..paul -- Paul ZarnowskiPh: 607-255-4757 Manager, Storage Services Fx: 607-255-8521 719 Rhodes Hall, Ithaca, NY 14853-3801Em: [EMAIL PROTECTED]
Re: TSM and DS8000 copy to iSCSI
Thanks, Wanda! I really appreciate all your information! Check into the replication capabilities of the DS8000; and you are correct you can also do that with an SVC; the advantage of the SVC is that you can replicate between unlike hardware. There are other ways to do it as well. There is a software product called Double-Take that is an excellent way of replicating data bases major applications; it gives you the ability to back out logical errors, as well as recover from a disk failure or facility disaster. If you want to replicate backups, that's a different issue, and you will always need a TSM server. There are several virtual tape libraries on the market that have replication capabilities. You have TSM write the backups to a VTL, the VTL sends the data to a 2nd VTL via TCP/IP. In case of a disaster, you bring up your TSM server at the alternate site, which is connected to the 2nd VTL, and you can start restoring (to what? in a facility disaster, if you lose the DS8000, you've lost the attached clients as well... ) And do you really want to replicate ALL your backup versions, or just the live data? First make your boss clarify what problem he's trying to solve. If he's just worried about losing the DS8000, there are plenty of mirroring capabilities within the box. If he's trying to create a DR strategy, and you need recovery in 4 hours or less, you should be using replication. And then there are issues of how long it takes to do the replication, which involves how much bandwidth you have and how much you are willing to pay for it. Over short distances, (like to another building) you can replicate data in real time if you have fibre connectivity. Over long distances, first look at a product like Double-Take. You can also replicate long distance with hardware, but it gets complicated and expensive. (Because you have to insure that logical groups of data, like a data base and its journal, are replicated together, in proper order, and that the replication is complete before you need to use that logical construct in a DR situation.) OTOH, if what you are trying to do is just get out of the business of moving tapes physically to your vault, then a replicating VTL is the way to go. That's an oversimplified version, but it should get you pointed in the right direction. On 2/15/08, Nancy R. Sizing an AIX platform and tape libraries
Hello All, We will be phasing out our OS/390 mainframe in the next few years. Currently, we have our TSM server installed on the mainframe, so we will need to move it off and on to something else. Based on conversations to this list and the Redbook, IBM Tivoli Storage Manager Implementation Guide, I believe that we definitely need to move to AIX. The above Redbook is not very helpful as far as sizing the AIX machine, saying that it is an inexact art. Here are our current and future requirements: 1) Right now we are backing up about 150 GB/ night, but we need to add Exchange and a new student information system (Banner) to this. We are estimating that we will soon grow to at least 500 -600 GB/night. 2) Workload consists of 95 clients, consisting of from small 20-30gb Unix and Windows systems, to DB (Oracle) and file servers with half to one terabyte of storage. This will grow to 120 or so clients soon. 3) We are currently storing 10.7 TB total data in two libraries, one local tape library and a second copy of everything at a remote tape library (3494 ATLs w/3590 E drives). Looks like this storage could triple, given how much we will be backing up each night (15 TB in each location). 4) Network is Gigabit Ethernet. 5) We would like to use one large server vs. multiple servers. Does anyone have a similar scenario that is on AIX that works well? Please describe, including tape libraries! Does anyone know of any additional guidance available on choosing an AIX platform size and choosing an appropriate tape library? Thanks! Immediate Action Schedule on Managed Domain?
Hello All, We have a managed server with managed policy domains (OS/390, TSM V4.2.1). When I try to define an immediate action schedule on the managed server, it gives me the error message: ANR3200E DEFINE SCHEDULE: Command cannot be executed - domain IT-DESKTOP-TSS is a managed object. I also tried defining an immediate action schedule on the configuration manager and refreshing the configuration. Then the client is contacted, but the managed server does not start the backup. I ended up defining a regular client backup schedule on the configuration manager, refreshing the configuration, then associating the client node with the schedule on the managed server. This worked but is not exactly convenient. Does anyone know of an easier way to kick off an immediate action schedule with a set up such as this or am I SOL? Managing shared tape drives on two servers
Hello All, We want to put two TSM servers on the same machine, within the same operating system (OS/390). These servers will need to share a very limited number of tape drives in two shared automatic tape libraries (one local and one remote). We will need to do all the daily maintenance tasks in approximately the same time slot. In addition, migrations or database backups could kick off at any time on either of the servers. How are other TSMer's handling the scheduling and sharing of tape drives between two servers? I have developed some scripts within TSM that kind-of handle the scheduling and sharing of tape drives in a semi-efficient manner, but this is certainly not an ideal solution. Has anyone written a tape drive manager or know of a packaged solution? Thanks! Nancy Brizuela University of Wyoming IBM Systems Group Ivinson Room 238 (307)766-2958
What happens when a backup is interrupted
Hi All, Could I have someone confirm my understanding of what happens under various circumstances when a backup is interrupted? Do I understand this correctly? Per the manuals, client sessions are cancelled when the server is halted. If an operation, such as a backup or archive process is interrupted when the session is cancelled, the server rolls back the results of the current transaction. The start window does not control whether or not a client backup restarts after an interrupt (caused by the server). It looks to me that this is controlled by two parameters in the client option file, the retry period and the maximum command retries. It looks like a backup would restart where it left off if the interrupt was caused by the server. It also appears that there is no restart provision if the interrupt is caused by the client going down. In that case, the backup must be restarted. However, if the client went down within the start window, I think we could assume that the backup would restart, although it would likely start completely over again. Thanks! Rebinding the management class on one point-in-time version
Hello All, We have a client who did a backup about a week ago of some databases. At the time, they used their normal backup include/exclude list and management classes. Now they would like to save this backup indefinitely. Is there any way to do this, short of restoring these versions someplace then archiving them using an appropriate management class? Is there any way to rebind the management class for just this one backup version? We looked at creating a backup set, but this option apparently only creates a backup set for the active version of files and these are no longer active since they were backed up a week ago. Thanks! Re: Journal Service Return Codes
All, Ok, our Windows people say that most of our RC=32 access errors in the journal service error log were triggered by files\folders on the PROFILE drives. They believe that the errors may be caused by roaming profiles, a special mechanism where every time a user logs in, their profile (files\folders) are copied to the local client. Upon logoff, the profile is written back to server. While this special sync mechanism may be the source of the problem, they have no method for changing the mechanism.
